Supreme Chancellor S. W. Green Visits Grand Loage.
Among the many noted guests who are in Fort Worth this week Supreme Chancellor S. W. Green stands foremost. At the head of the Supreme Grand Lodge of North America, South American, European, Asian and African, he is a powerful influence for good in the affairs of the race. Under his direction the Supreme Grand Lodge has erected and is maintaining in Hot Springs, Arkansas one of the finest sanctuaries and both honors to be found in the nation anywhere. In the next future he will be the plan of the Supreme Lodge to erect probably in the city of Chicago a Pyhian Temple the like of which does not belong to any Negro Protestant anywhere.

Pythian Progress For the Past Seven Years Reads Like Fairy Tale.
Had the, marvelous, changes that have taken place in the condition of the Knights of Pythias happened in the old days, some such tale as those found in the Arabian Knights would have happened in the old days, some in these days when men have learned that the touching of the processus of men to protect the progresses of men to protect the lines and according to rule we call it the response of an institution, policeholders and in addition protects their homes and makes them under the leadership of Grand Chancellor W. S. Willis and his assistants in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. There is the story of the development of the order of the Knights of Pythias, which under the leadership of Grand Chancellor W. S. Willis and his assistants. There are some concerns that enjoy what we are pleased to call "mumlahum" growth, a condition will for a time it can to grow and spread but the cause it can cause the return of the project to its former condition. Such has not been the case with this Order has grown. And it has grown only because it, under his direction, put into operation a system that cannot be gainned. Interest in the Order was answered by the brought in applicants by the thousands. A rigid system of medical examination allowed the Orders to those who were good risks. And out of the many called during the period chosen and added to the rolls.
The moneyys of the Order always inefficiently handled were so conspicuous that this same seven year period the increased from $129,471.17 to the huge and magnificent sum of $149,471.17 to took the Order thirty-three years to become worth $127,437.17 and to ship W. S. William it has accumulated in net assets $413,691.30. But though there are those who might attempt to argue that there is nothing norvious in this growth, the fact remains that in the other major social societies in Texas this feast has not yet been equalled. The Pyttian induction of Texas in 1817 was the whole of these United States, it has grown to the point that it is all other jurisdictions in the Negro Pyttian world. And for this fact too much credit cannot be given. It gives dignified and remunerative employment to many men and women in its offices and on its grounds. It is the whole fraternal world by its progressive policies it is the first in Texas to become so rich in employment that it is stood ready to help in a financial way for its members in a baked taken for the inability to pay off the last notes of indebtedness. No other Order so far has been so successful.
of the interests of its members.
The past seven year period in Pythalmus has been one of the most successful periods in the breths of all Pythians a kind of pride that comes from the successful performance of a large number of leaders made its war. Nothing done accidently or by trust to "back." Its plans have been in accordance with the laws and its system of accounting has been the most efficient. It is for these reasons that its growth has been rapid.

LEARNING TO LIVE WITH ONE'S NEIGHBOR
THE MAGIC OF THE
BIG FOOT
THE MAGIC OF THE
BIG FOOT
Dr. Sutton E. Giggs in speaking to the graduating class of the Washington High School declared that one of the traits necessary to becoming a real American was to learn that it is good to learn how to live with one's neighbor. He had reference particularly to the Negro and his neighbors. He said that no one need of the race who intended to live in the South to have it said that they were not on a good terms as possible with the people with whom they lived. And in this statement he made it clear that the conditions under which we live are far from satisfactory but if they were to be continually lived under the aid of all of the better disclosures in order that as great as good as was possible might result.

he has never hosted the white
feather, neither has it been disgraced
by the yellow streak. It is not affiliated with the flamell
mouth. It is in a plain, every day
sensitive, conservative supporter
of the Constitution, and the pacing breast; it lies on
double flag. It prosecutes a patriotism as brand as our
country's. Its love of team-humd
justice covers all the territory
occupied by the human rose. This is pretty high ground,
but it is not a place of pride. Dares of the great goose up and stand with us. This ground is holy.
Such discussion as this must necessarily fall on many deaf ears. There will of course be many who will not agree that the things said here are true. But they are. It does not mean that we will lose one lota of the ability of self-determination that is now ours. It does not mean that we will be any the less self-respecting. It does not mean that we will be any the less self-respecting. It does not mean that many of our most blatant advisers argue against. It only means that we will seek in every way to improve the opportunities that are now ours to receive the help that we so much need in the progress that we hope to make in our struggle toward freer, fuller participation in the affairs of the country in which we live. It will pay us to learn to live as well as possible with our deaf friends. We will be well aware that there are more than we now think who are willing and ready to lend a helping hand if they only could see the things for which we are honestly and earnestly striving.
This Issue
A rich cattailman died a few days age and, when the story of his benefactions was told it was found that he was a constant benefactor of humanity without regard for race or color. The story as told by the Dallas News listed the Colored Orphanage at Glimer among the many institutions that were accustomed to contribute one thousand dollars a year.
In this issue of THE EXPRESS "difinitive in service" there more information for the general public than has ever before seen in any journal of the race in Texas. There are gathered information about the condition of the various Orders of the State than have ever appeared at one time in the whole of the history of Secret Orders in Texas and the sums listed in their total are搽紧. More than two million dollars in assets are the elements appear in this paper and when it is realised that not all of them are owned themselves of the opportunity of telling the public of their progress through these columns some idea of the treemark of the race in Texas is obtained.
It was not common knowledge that this man had any regard for the concerns of Negroes. It is probable that he was listed by the people of our group as one who, as many others are considered, knew little and pared less about the concerns of the race. Only his death revealed the fact that he was interested in the lives of many who live in a sphere apart from us and yet whose interests and sympathies in our behalf are often quickened to the extent that they make themselves felt in constructive work and giving to us. And in the consider-able case of the Negroes, there should come a greater realization of the fact that not all of them are the consistent haters of us that we think. It is unfortunately true that the majority of those with whom we come in contact are of the Negro-hating type and it is only natural that there is a sort of tendency to consider all alike in the thinking of them. But that is not true. And it is only just that we give them due credit.
but the most remarkable thing about the whole issue is that never before in the history of Tinaa have our leaders been able to see as they now do in that order to grow to large and prosper concerns they must keep consistently before those who must understand in that growth the facts that most vital concern the facts.
Another unfortunate circumstance which militates against the ready acceptance of this form of thought is the fact that many of those who are disposed to be friendly to us and to speak out in the defense of justice and fairness have their vows hushed by the fear that they will be considered our friends to the exclusion of the likes of their less fortunate neighbors. We have the love of justice to be willing to suffer the disdain of their fellows. Naturally they are silent.
It also shows the progress of the Negro press in being able to fill the needs of these concerns in this report. This issue contains a number of issues that will be addressed to every part of the United States and to some parts of Canada and Africa. The message of the progress of the race concerns of Texas will become common knowledge of Texas will grow space.
But the constant desire of ours to keep in touch with those who are friendly and to continue to make known to those who as yet do not know our real hope for fuller contribution to the welfare of the section in which we live, will increase the feeling of mutual good will to the extent, we hope, that some of the unfortunate things which are our portion now will be rendered impossible of occurrence by reason of the fact that the majority of our neighbors will be in need of a brotherhood indeed and in truth is the natural outcome of a real belief in the Fatherhood of God.
It is only so be hoped that the general Negro public will come to understand the service that its press performs for it. No other medium in the country has the ability to the nation the accomplishments, duties and ability of the race as yet, the recognition accorded it is not held as pot to allow for its own success, that it can perform for the race as great a service as does the press.
Negro Commission Bill Favorably Reported
The Express Jeans Texas. This fame is only an evidence of what it can do when the right sort of business is "deterministic" but not to the extent that its management "makes it to be. It will plunge for a greater price." The public of the wonderful service that it can render to the race in the States is giving to its concern the promise that will guarantee their growth.

As it now appears to us, the commission for the space of its first few years will be nothing more than a place to which many of our self-styled "leader" will strive by fair and foul means to attain. A place that will cause them to forget everything other than that they are in the seats of the mighty.
If it becomes a reality, it would be a fine thing to have it known that its members would be chosen from any mans rather than from the directly appointed with politics. If it becomes a possible guarantee that those who will fill its seats will think a little of how to serve the purpose for which they were chosen rather than political expediency as is now so often the case.
His philosophy was not wrong in any way. In fact he produced a sort of reasoning that should form a much greater part of our thinking than it now does. In spite of what others may say there must come a time in which the points of contact between the groups are increased to such a great extent that the better adjudication of the unfortunate circumstances that arise from time to time in the living of the people may make more and more difficult than they then are. And too, there must be some way in which the things most needed to be known about us, our needs and our desires can come to those who are most likely to sympathize with them in a more direct way.
Heretofore it has happened very often that the type of those who have taken upon themselves the task of carrying our messages to those of our neighbors who were willing to listen have been of the kind that hindered rather than helped them. In the case of the type of our people have not had the confidence that was necessary. But the time and the circumstances produced no better and the way in which the race followed leadership was not so as to make the changing of that condition possible. But now it is possible. The race has produced men of character, education and a sense of values that allows for the trusting of them in ways that formerly we did nothing of. The need now is for a following of that leadership to the extent that they may be able to do for us the things that they have done, and to make the points of contact and make the race felt in the upbuilding of the community.
They of course cannot do this as long as there is the ever present fear of the sort of criticism that has always hampered such men. Heretofore it has been that whenever a man with the right sort of vision and the proper sense of values attempts to stand in the breach and do for him what he wants, he himself bernated for a traitor to the race and branded from one corner of the land to another as one unfit for being trusted with the leadership of the group.
That time must pass. These ideas must pass. Some men of recognized worth and ability for leadership must be given the task of seeing to it that the points of contact with the people of the purpose of increasing the helpful relationships of the two.
The following of the well recognized earnest, honest man that the race is producing will bring this to pass. It is worthless.
Unknown Friends. How Many More Are There?
In the meantime we all may justly be glad that this man has lived and prospered to the extent that he did. His actions proved him worthy of the name of the philanthropist that he was. And it is our belief that his enjoyment of the new life to which he has gone will be more complete than many who were not the Friends to mankind that he was.
What amounts to national recognition of the problem of the welfare of the Negro is seen in the favorable reporting of the Negro Commission Bill to the House of Representatives by the House Judiciary Committee. The appropriation for the first year according to the report is $250,000. The salaries of the commissioners are fixed at $6,000 annually. That of the chairman is $7,000. The proposed commissioner will be paid in white and three Colored. It will look after the educational, labor and social welfare of the race. If finally the commission will be located in Washington D. C., and will

MALARIA
DR. J. G. HARDIN
Malaria fever is an infectious disease due to the presence in the blood of a germ or vegetable oil by a man named Dr. J. G. Hardin in 1881. The parasite enters the blood by the bite of a mosquito. The disease affects all ages. The disease is endemic in certain areas of India and in stagnant ponds and in water in old canna, water karnil, cisterna rice. The disease is characterized by chills and fever. The clinical forms of malaria are many and type of the disease is named from the Latin word malaria. It will help you get rid of the disease.

whose beauty
told in this
terrasing song
If you have ever seen Eder Bigeon in one of her inimitable performances on the vaudeville stage you have coined her long, slightly wavy, beautiful hair. You have also enlisted her clear, light, vibrantly healthy skin and her wonderful color. Naturally you would like to know how Eder Bigeon won her beauty.
Her answer is simple. "I use and recommend HiJa Beauty Preparations" she says. To get her long straight hair she used HiJa Quinine Hair Dressing and HiJa Cocoanut Quinine Shampoo. For her clear, light skin she used HiJa Shu Shu Whitener Ointment and HiJa Medicated Soap.
These products which have brought beauty to Eder Bigeon will also bring beauty to you. Describe right now that you too will be beautiful and everywhere admired. Begin the use of HiJa products today. If your dragonfly cannot supply you direct to us.

THE MAN WHO PILOTED
TABOR OVER THE STORMY SEAS
Sir J. 8, Adair was born in Union Springs, Ala, 1877. His
father died when he was quite young, but he had a yearning and
‘high ideal for Baucation and woilled his sway*into Selma Univer-
sity, Selma, Ala, where he finished the High Grammar courses,
He then came to ‘Texas, 1898, and engaged in Public School work
for 16 years. He saw a need of thorough preparation and forced
his way to Bishop College where he spent 4 years, From that time
hhe has been engaged in pastorial work. In 1912 he was appoint
ed C. G. 0. of the Knights and Danghters of Tabor in which ea-
pacity he served successfully 4 years. He was then elected C. G.
©. of Knights and Daughters of Tabor, where he served 4 years.
In 1918 he was elected V. G. M. of Knights and Daughters of Ta-
tor, which office he held with eredit until the death of the Jament-

Consecration prayer was prayed by Sir Jackson, Editor of
the Taborian Banner. At his first board meeting, which was the
Srd day of June the membership of Tabor was less than ten thou
sand, no Tents at all comparativel? peaking. There was no
money at all which could be accounted for. Over Sixty Thousand
Dollars in death claims was owed besides unpaid obligations on
property. In the same board meeting, Sir Adair made arrange-
‘ments to borrow Fifteen Thousand Dollars, to. keep the - Order
‘from going into sorrow, yet the Ten Thousand membership we had
‘were badly discouraged and almost lost hope. Sir Adair, however,
being a bold, fearless and courageous leader who knew no faiture
dipped hia pen in the Star of Confidence, with’the task to over-
ride every opposition and put Tabor in the front ranks where it
rightly belongs, He began to ride night and day in the sleet and
snow to put the Knights and Daiighters of Tabor through. As to
whether or not he succeeded you shall be the Judge, He paid
back the $6,500 to make the second loan of the Dallas property,

Whatever success the Knights and Daughters of Tabor have
‘enjoyed in Texas is the result of much hard work and the greatest
perseverance in the face of the mostunkind criticisms and ma-
licious handicaps. It has not just happened so.
But the price of continued success is eternal vigilance. We
do not deceive ourselves with the idea that we can rest on past or
present laurels. We realize the importance of tireless energy in
our service to our present membership and to those who will even-
tually connect themselves with Tabor. We realize that we have
just planted the seed and that we cannot hope to pluck the fruit
without constant and careful cultivation.
‘And it is for this reason that we are continually striving to
give you ever-broadening service—always absolute protection and

The surest way of guaranteeing this safety of. your loved.

No? Alright, * i ‘
And it’s possible that no fire engine will ever stop at your

Did a hearse ever stop at your house? ‘
No—and I guess you thank God for that,
But you do know that a hearse will stop at your house some

THE EXPRESS believes that much of the splendid success which has come to the Fraternities of Texas, has come because of the fact that they have told the public "well and often" about the benefits which they offer and the advantages which they bring. And too, this paper takes a great deal of PRIDE in the thought that it has helped to bring this to pass because it is the medium in Texas best fitted to tell the world about the PROGRESS of the institution of our State.
THE 20,000 COPIES IN THIS SPECIAL ISSUE will go to every corner of America and to some foreign countries. No other journal of the Race in the South does this.

The Culmination of a Life Dream and the Result of Many Years of Hard Work
Together with peace we have prosperity. We have a reputation of having a reserve fund equal to that of the biggest and best organizations of our kind in America. Our every pledge is securely protected and we religiously carry them out. Our business methods of operation are in keeping with sound business policy, eliminating every defect designed to lessen confidence. We take great pride in our mammoth reserve only because it supplies the means whereby our pledge to us is maintained, and the principles of the Order effectively carried out. In this light it is a worthy motive of thanksgiving.
The above cuts are evidence enough of the speed with which the Odd Fellows of Texas are going on with the work of constructing the magnificent Temple at Houston. The Grand Master and his son are shown near the center with workmen squaring up the side where the steam shovel could not reach. Just to the west is shown the Model Laundry and to the Northwest is shown the modern three-story building recently leased for the Colored Y. M. C. A.
Though there has been much opposition on the part of the white citizens of Houston to the project, the location is so close to the real business district of Houston, by reason of the fact and skill of the Grand Master and his Cabinet, all of this has been overcome and the construction is well under way.
Any man or woman thinking of increasing his fraternal insurance should first think of the skills required to protect him, to prevent him from not altogether solving, having a large reserve of funds in proportion to his membership.
According to a statement made recently to an Express reporter by Grand Master Goree the excavation is about finished and the foundation will soon be laid. The original plans for a roof garden have been abandoned due to the high cost of the materials which are being used. The building as it will appear when finished will be far more beautiful than as at first planned. It will stand five stories in height including the basement and will be beautifully finished with artistic coringing. Re-enforced concrete will take the place of the steel frame that was at first planned.
The Odd Fellows of Texas in so far as these things are concerned concern the careful inspection of every Texan who is in need of more fraternal insurance. Below is found our financial statement as of January 1st. Read it. Think about it. Let the full weight of the amounts of money there listed come home to you and then decide that it is the fraternity that you need to protect you.
These figures represent the work through a number of years of men who have been trained in the handling of large sums of money and in the laying of plans that look toward the safe and sane investment of the surplus funds of the thousands of members of the Order.
This Temple when finished will be a credit to the financial skill and executive ability of the Grand Master Goree and his Cabinet and a monument to the cooperative ability of the Odd Fellowes. The Temple will be a place of worship and reflection for those they are doing and Texas, by reason of the erection of this building will take a longer place in the thinking of the nation when the ability of its Negro Odd Fellows is thought of.
Here is indicated the wealth of the Odd Fellows of Texas. It is in excess of half a million of dollars. Real money for any concern and an amount that is scarcely ever heard of by the organizations of our people as they have existed for the past fifty years. Certainly that huge sum of money is the amount of the governing heads of that Order that guaranteed to you safety, security and competent service.
In addition to its sentimental value to the ability of the Fraternity which is erecting it, it will mean hundreds of thousands of dollars in real estate to the Order. It will represent an asset that time will not cause to depreciate. Located as it is in the heart of Houston, it can only grow in value as time goes on.
Here is an organization that has a reputation for solvency that dates back for nearly as many years as it is old. Its officers are of the highest type. Its holdings in cash and real estate make its promises to pay as good as that of the highest rated fraternity to be found anywhere. What more can a prospective policyholder want in addition?
The Grand Master spoke truly when in speaking of this building a few weeks ago he declared that:
The Odd Fellows and Ruths of Texas have general and special reasons to be proud. We know peace and enjoy the tranquility naturally associated with Friendship, Love and Truth; Peace, Happiness and Prosperity. In the cabinet of the Order there is harmony and coordination of effort, thereby assuring the Order the highest degree of efficiency from those chosen to serve. In the ranks there is also peace and mutual confidence in the ultimate triumph of all the principles under which we operate.
It is now in the midst of a drive for new members and the cost of connecting with it is less now than it will be later.
If you are going to be an Odd Fellow some day, why not now? Read all of the facts about the Order that are contained in this page. Think them over well. See if the things as told here do not fill the whole bill of needs in a fraternal Order. Then see any Odd Fellow for information as to how to join.

THE ORPHANAGE AND ITS WORK
It would be a wonderful thing if every member of the race in Texas could have the opportunity of visiting the Dickson Orphanage and of seeing the character of the plant, the care that is given to the many children there, and the real estate that is included in its campus. It would open many eyes that now are shut to the tremendous amount of money that is needed each year to sustain the place. But some idea of the scope of the work of the institution and of the size of the institution can be had when it is realized that the Dickson Colored Orphanage was organized in 1897 by its present president, Rev. W. L. Dickson and Dr. R. C. Dickson, since its organization it has cared for children who had no parents to care for them.
In order that its work might not be hampered and in order that it might minister to the needs of all children in Texas, it was chartered as a non-profit institution embracing all denominations.
It gives to each child that comes under its care a full high school diploma, a college diploma or a triennial training. All of the children are taught Domestic Science, Domestic Art, truck gardening, farm animal training in all of its forms.
In order that this training may be given in accordance with the discipline of the twenty persons are kept regularly employed on the grounds as teachers, gardeners, and farm and garden land of the Orphanage compound of the city of Dallas. The productive soil. On the land there are forgi'two buildings which house the students, and the school. The total valuation of the land and buildings together with the equipment is computed by the accountant of the institute 84,39.1. The total indebtedness of the institution includes 85,400 on bank leaves at banks leaving the net assets at 87,54.39.1.
There are 288 incarnations to be fed and clothed and the twenty teachers to be paid.
Here is a statement that will give some idea of the size and scope of the institution. The ophthalm of Texas by this institution.
SECRET ORDERS AND THE ORPHANS HOME
The origin of secret Orders is to be found in the desire to help and aid the less fortunate who are in their distress. The orders are to be found that do not contain in some form the words "certain" or "benenevolence." It is to be expected then that they will always be required to provide aid and from the worthy institutions of the state.
It is true that to a great extent they have fulfilled the duties for which they were appointed, and orphans of their deceased members have always found them a place of refuge and orphans of their deceased promised. But they have a larger and more inclusive duty. When ever a child is in distress, the charity and benevolence to include the less fortunate who perchance do not belong directly to their fraternity.
The Dickson Colored Orphan's Home is performing a service to the orphaned Negro children of Texas and to the orphaned children of the history of our institutions. It is picking up, caring for and educating the orphaned children orphaned by the death of the parents who otherwise would be found to live of crime.
The record of the children who have passed through this institution is one of the most important work that is being done. So far none of the thousands that have been taken to the records and without exception they are good and reliable citizens. The race needs just such citizens at all times. And any institution that produces such citizens is in danger of port of which all racial institutions are capable. It is said to the credit of several of the secret orders of the state that they have, for several years, trained the Orphan House at Gilmore. The Knights of Pythia have been training the Orphan House for years and the Odd Fellows for three
THE PLEA OF THE UNFORTUNATE
Have you a heart? Do you feel at all that you are your brothers keeper? If no hear the plan of two hundred and thirty-eight children who have no father or mother and creation of those of their own race as you are, dear reader, and the kindly dismembered members of the other race, must grow up without proper care and education.
In the Dickson Colored Orphanage at Gliner all of these children have been gathered. There they are being fed and clothed and educated in the city of Hewlett Dickson and the twenty persons who help him.
Think of the expense of feeding this large number of growing children compare it with the monthly food expense of your own house and then realizes how many dollars are needed for food alone in this institution. Do the same with the items of clothes and the other necessities of the children and add to them the cost of twenty persons who are helping in the direction of these children and decide that it is your duty to help that institution to care for them.
In its program of giving to these orphans the kind of training that will fit them for the greatest service to themselves and the state of the country, and which will be used for the planting of crops and the training of the boys in the art of agriculture. On this land the institution owes $25,200 in money which must be met as they fall due. If these notes are not paid the children will be homebound and the opportunity of receiving the needed training.
The orphanage is asking this year
for $125,000 in order that the in-
debtedness may be cleared up and
improvements made for the care of
the ever increasing number of child-
ren who are coming to it every year.
It is a worthy institution with an

six years that it has been in existence. In the face of handicaps that cannot be fully appreciated by the young, it has given experience with them. It has done its part in the development and training of youths of the race who otherwise would have been the care community in which they lived.
This appeal for aid is directed to you. It asks that you give, only what you are able to give. It comes to test the love of humanity that you have in your bosom and the strength of your desire to see all of the children of your race have a fair chance in the game of life.
What will you do about these motherless children? You will give them your help of course. Don't delay. Do it today.

The Pythian Temple, One of Dallas' Show Places
The show place of Dallas at least as far as Negroes are concerned in the Pythian Temple no voice is allowed to come to the city and leave without a visit to this place. It represents the race at its best. And it is a monument to Pythian procrinensis that will stand for years to come and point to their drift and prudence.
In 1816 the Grand Lodge after

W. S. WILLIS, GRAND CHANCELLOR
It is probable that there is no Pythian jurisdiction in the world that is more blest in the person of its grand Chancellor than Texas, W. S. Willis, through sheer effort of progress has brought this free State of near bankruptcy to the highest point that Nero Pythianism has ever seen in American and in the short space of five years. Some men, it is claimed, have thrust upon them and some achieve greatness. truly he belongs in the latter class for he has taken a juridiction that stood in the lowest class as com- and under its general fraternity and respected whatever Pythianism are known. In his brain were born the progressive movements that have increased the membership by thousands in his brain was ever inaugurated the membership by thousands, in his brain was

conceived the most forward step ever inaugurated by a fraternity of making its surplus funds help to save and secure the homes of members of the Order who were in danger of losing them. He is a Texas leader by virtue of sheer ability and not luck or chance.
He was born April 9 at Waco on the Branx River and was educated in Bishop College from which he graduated in 1897. Early in his life, white scarcely knew the English language, the Knights of Pythias and worked faithfully in the local lodges of the cities in which he lived. His constant attendance at grand lodges and the seal for the promotion of the Order which he showed finally brought him to the attention of the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of the Grand Lodge as assistant Secretary of the Endowment Department, a position which he held for six years. This service was performed under the late and inaugurated Sir A. J. Moore who was born in 1868. he succeeded the late A. J. Moore as Secretary and continued in the capacity until June of

In addition to being the Grand Chancellor of the state of Texas he is also the Secretary of the Endowment Department of the Supreme Grand Lodge and a member of the Supreme Pythian Temple Commission. As Endowment Member he has charge of all the Temple Lodge he has charge of all of the Endowment affairs of that body and as member of the Temple Commission will figure largely in the preparation for the erection of the Supreme Home now under contemplation.
The Grand Chancellor was married in June 1906 and one child has given happiness and comfort to his home. this is the U. B. of F. and S. M. T. way of serving you.
1-This is a Negro Fraternity, pure and simple for our people, of our people and by our people.
2-In addition to the above stated facts, we submit the following for your thoughtful and critical consideration.
We have made the following investments in Houston:

3RD WARD ..... 7,000.00
2ND WARD ..... 3,000.00
4TH WARD ..... 4,000.00
Total Houston Investment ..... $408,500.00
On these the Grand Lodge receives some eight (8 Per Cent.) to ten (10 Per Cent) interest. All but three thousand ($3,000.00) dollars of these loans have been made to Negroes, Business Firms, Church, Homes and Schools.
The U. B. F. and S. M. T. is a BIG BUSINESS concern made by Negroes from the ground up, with no taint of Jim Crowism or color prejudice.
The cash in the Banks is not included in these statements. Our Liabilities are practically nothing. We know you are thoughtful
