Garvey is so foolish that he belongs. The delegates of Marcus Garvey are in Liberia, but the president of Liberia on their visit here—nor has there any official assistance given to them—is not in Liberia. Liberia is in reality a home for free Negroes—but having already two million of them in Liberia, there is no cry to the American Negroes to here build a country in financial assistance and missions to extend their operations to Liberia in such a way as the president of Liberia has united people already in Liberia. Ferdinand Morton is a Negro and a Democrat and he makes no apologies for his political allegiance. Says Mr. Morton in the course of his letter which is too long to be reproduced in its entirety: "If the republican party, should nominate a man whose candidacy held out some substantial hope to us, I should deem it my duty, to my race and my country, to do my humble part toward bringing about his election. There is, however, a reason even stronger why I shall, within the State of New York, support the democratic nominee for president, in the event of the nomination of President Coolidge. Tammany Hall will support the democratic nominee, and will expect our aid. Tammany Hall richly deserves any aid which we can give. That organization, under the leadership of the late Charles F. Murphy, has accorded to the Negro in this state complete political and civic equality. By so doing Tammany Hall has demonstrated that the Negro question, so-called, is, in the main, only a moral question—whether the nation shall do the right by the Colored citizens. The nation is strong enough to do so if only it will to do so. The elevation of the Negro in New York to a plane of political and civic equality was made possible chiefly through the moral courage of Charles F. Murphy. In that lies a valuable object lesson for us. We must put our faith in men, and not in parties. We shall never make effective use of our suffrage until we learn that, so far as our constitutional rights are concerned, parties mean nothing. Nationally we owe allegiance to neither party. Which ever party controls, the national government, we are lynched, disfranchised, jim-crowd, put in pennage, and the fruits of our honest toll filched from us. The national democratic party is openly contemptuous of our rights; and the republican party, with a hypocrisy as vile as that of Uriah Heep, pretends friendship for us, so that our vote may keep it—the party which now disgraces the memory of Abraham Lincoln—in corrupt control of the national government. While it is true that nationally we owe allegiance to neither party, we should, of course, be in a much better position if our vote were divided between them. I think it the duty of the younger voters of our race, for the sole purpose of dividing our vote, to give their suffrage to the democratic party. At the coming election, we can give the victory to either party. I hope that at its convention my party will prove that it is worthy of victory. It can do so by courageously reaffirming the principles upon which this republic was founded, and upon which alone it can endure, and by nominating the party's standard bearer an honest, courageous man who has proved himself true to America's finest ideals. If the democratic party does that, then the doom of racial and religious hatred, bigotry and intolerance is sealed; and the party and the nation alike will achieve the greatest triumph since the election of Abraham Lincoln. These sayings contain much political philosophy that is good. Our only contention concerning it is that the writer does not show much of the ability to think clearly on his subject when he can believe that the Democratic party which has been the agressor in all of the campaigns of legislation for the complete relegation of the Negro to the rear of American affairs can be the party which will be either able or willing to grant to him the things that he feels that his race needs. The Democratic Party will never reverse itself as long as the South is as it is and with all due respect for our brothers who have joined it we feel that they hope not wisely but too well. GOOD ADVICE In addressing the graduating class of Howard University a few days ago President Coolidge gave good advice when he declared that prejudice cannot lessen if we only stood and argued about it. Accomplishment of the sort that compaia attention was the remedy that he gave for the sort of conditions that now seem to hinder our progress. Such advice is worth heeding. It is true that there must be some protest at the conditions that are not productive of opportunity for our best effort. And yet, that protest must not be all that we do by any means. We must exert every effort at getting the things for which we wish done by some means and somehow the door to greater things will open up to us. If all of the young people who are now graduating from school could but realize the whole truth of this fact much of their success would be assured. If all of us who now are ambitious and anxious for a better day would realize this and use every opportunity that presents itself our progress toward a better day would be much more assured. Protest alone is worth nothing. Work, hard and constant is the key that unlocks the door to better things. It now appears that the two divisions of the Methodist Church could unite if they could both agree on what to do with the Colored brother. Color in religion is a mighty serious thing these days. And religion as far as it relates to these United States is Christian in name only in some parts. We are not curious but sometime we wonder what the Lord thinks about the South. News reports declare that there was prayer in the committee room sometime before the platform was submitted to the general house for discussion. In the light of the confusion and fighting that followed we are wondering if that prayer there was anything about the "strengthening of right arms." We are still talking about the Democratic convention. Who said that the Democratic National Convention was a fine denomination of Nordic superiority? Fist fighting everything over the choice of a candidate. Our folks need not worry much about their own little disagreements in their meetings. They are nothing like what has happened recently in New York. If things are as complicated in Democratic ranks because of the Jews, Trish, etc., what would they have been if there had been a few Negroes present?
