JO HIANGIAN, July 4-Jolie Angelo Pirpo, who lasted almost "nocturne" with Jack Dempsey, is willing to take a turn at high finance for the American Rattler, he demands an advance with Harry Wills. According to the preliminary terms of the South American Rattler, he demands an advance with Harry Wills. According to the privilege of selecting his own referee, also he demands an advance with Harry Wills. The institution which interfere with plans for a bout in August in Jersey City between himself and Wills, is demanding these "extravagant" demands, Tox Blackard, it is said, confirmed them, intimating how that if Pirpo was to win, a match may be promoted between Jack Dempsey and Wills.

has never hated扎 the white feather, neither has it been digged by the yellow streak. It is not affiliated with the flamed horse, but with the resilient, conservative newspaper, which trims its nose to catch the pacing breast; files an doubled flag. It professes a parachute as broad as our wings and a justice cover all the territory occupied by the human race. This is pretty high ground, but we live on it and are presupposed. Days of the press come around with us. This ground is holy.

LIBERIA REFUSES THE GARVEY MOVEMENT.
If all of the advises recently made public are to be relied upon, soon Marcus Garvey will be de-claring that "he came unto his own but his own received him not". Liberia will have nothing to do with it. Says a letter written from that country to the press of America by Major Butler, in command of bounty of the Liberian forest:
If Marcus Garvey thinks, and his followers are foolish to believe that they are the only people to have won the past October, against the wishes of the Liberian government, because the Liberian people have come. Liberians are prepared to fight to the last drop of blood to arm-resistance to any attack on them, their strength falls them, are prepared to call on England and France for help. Garvey is so foolish that he belongs.
The delegates of Marcus Garvey are in Liberia, but the president of Liberia on their visit here—nor has there any official assistance given to them—is not in Liberia. Liberia is in reality a home for free Negroes—but having already two million of them in Liberia, there is no cry to the American Negroes to here build a country in financial assistance and missions to extend their operations to Liberia in such a way as the president of Liberia has united people already in Liberia. We do say that we are in need of wealthy people who have money and can carry on independent operations of their own, but to say that they have land and is asking that American Negroes to come here to develop the country—is only one of the
Libera does not welcome Garvey nor his followers—not in the same way as he does with the Garvey affair—as a matter of fact there is not a real difference between the Libera and all the nonsense in the papers speaking about the Monrovia division is only a garvey. The Libera government is shown by the fact that G. M. Johnson, the First Potentate, reigned Liberia for 20 years as a Liberian government as counsel general but as a Liberian scheme were all a failure as far as Liberia was concerned—no doubt the scheme were all a failure for this third Liberian cannot be blamed. We are of their opinion, that will Garvey use as a last strong point of argument some what will Garvey use as a last strong point of argument continue to lift his offers Our guests in that he will send amabilis where he will again attempt to uplift the fallen African and independently raise a in a few
A BLACK DEMOCRAT WHO MAKES NO APOLYTES.
Ferdinand Morton is a Negro and a Democrat and he makes no apologies for his political allegiance. Rather in a letter to a letter to the National Democratic leader he makes clear his reason for his adherence to that party and in that letter says so many really profitable things that we reproduce some of them for the benefit of those who are inclined to think politically.
Says Mr. Morton in the course of his letter which is too long to be reproduced in its entirety:
"If the republican party, should nominate a man whose candidacy held out some substantial hope to us, I should deem it my duty, to my race and my country, to do my humble part toward bringing about his election.
There is, however, a reason even stronger why I shall, within the State of New York, support the democratic nominee for president, in the event of the nomination of President Coolidge. Tammany Hall will support the democratic nominee, and will expect our aid. Tammany Hall richly deserves any aid which we can give. That organization, under the leadership of the late Charles F. Murphy, has accorded to the Negro in this state complete political and civic equality. By so doing Tammany Hall has demonstrated that the Negro question, so-called, is, in the main, only a moral question—whether the nation shall do the right by the Colored citizens. The nation is strong enough to do so if only it will to do so. The elevation of the Negro in New York to a plane of political and civic equality was made possible chiefly through the moral courage of Charles F. Murphy. In that lies a valuable object lesson for us. We must put our faith in men, and not in parties.
We shall never make effective use of our suffrage until we learn that, so far as our constitutional rights are concerned, parties mean nothing. Nationally we owe allegiance to neither party. Which ever party controls, the national government, we are lynched, disfranchised, jim-crowd, put in pennage, and the fruits of our honest toll filched from us. The national democratic party is openly contemptuous of our rights; and the republican party, with a hypocrisy as vile as that of Uriah Heep, pretends friendship for us, so that our vote may keep it—the party which now disgraces the memory of Abraham Lincoln—in corrupt control of the national government.
While it is true that nationally we owe allegiance to neither party, we should, of course, be in a much better position if our vote were divided between them. I think it the duty of the younger voters of our race, for the sole purpose of dividing our vote, to give their suffrage to the democratic party.
At the coming election, we can give the victory to either party. I hope that at its convention my party will prove that it is worthy of victory. It can do so by courageously reaffirming the principles upon which this republic was founded, and upon which alone it can endure, and by nominating the party's standard bearer an honest, courageous man who has proved himself true to America's finest ideals. If the democratic party does that, then the doom of racial and religious hatred, bigotry and intolerance is sealed; and the party and the nation alike will achieve the greatest triumph since the election of Abraham Lincoln.
These sayings contain much political philosophy that is good. Our only contention concerning it is that the writer does not show much of the ability to think clearly on his subject when he can believe that the Democratic party which has been the agressor in all of the campaigns of legislation for the complete relegation of the Negro to the rear of American affairs can be the party which will be either able or willing to grant to him the things that he feels that his race needs. The Democratic Party will never reverse itself as long as the South is as it is and with all due respect for our brothers who have joined it we feel that they hope not wisely but too well.
GOOD ADVICE
In addressing the graduating class of Howard University a few days ago President Coolidge gave good advice when he declared that prejudice cannot lessen if we only stood and argued about it. Accomplishment of the sort that compaia attention was the remedy that he gave for the sort of conditions that now seem to hinder our progress.
Such advice is worth heeding. It is true that there must be some protest at the conditions that are not productive of opportunity for our best effort. And yet, that protest must not be all that we do by any means. We must exert every effort at getting the things for which we wish done by some means and somehow the door to greater things will open up to us. If all of the young people who are now graduating from school could but realize the whole truth of this fact much of their success would be assured. If all of us who now are ambitious and anxious for a better day would realize this and use every opportunity that presents itself our progress toward a better day would be much more assured. Protest alone is worth nothing. Work, hard and constant is the key that unlocks the door to better things.
It now appears that the two divisions of the Methodist Church could unite if they could both agree on what to do with the Colored brother. Color in religion is a mighty serious thing these days. And religion as far as it relates to these United States is Christian in name only in some parts. We are not curious but sometime we wonder what the Lord thinks about the South.
News reports declare that there was prayer in the committee room sometime before the platform was submitted to the general house for discussion. In the light of the confusion and fighting that followed we are wondering if that prayer there was anything about the "strengthening of right arms." We are still talking about the Democratic convention.
Who said that the Democratic National Convention was a fine denomination of Nordic superiority? Fist fighting everything over the choice of a candidate. Our folks need not worry much about their own little disagreements in their meetings. They are nothing like what has happened recently in New York.
If things are as complicated in Democratic ranks because of the Jews, Trish, etc., what would they have been if there had been a few Negroes present?

Because of all the plank favoring the Negro, the anti-lynching campaign to the Negro hating South Carolina in g from the past, there is no assurance that this plank will ever be so far as the Cleveland Convention is concerned, the Colored Tie indeed. There is lots to be bought this
month. First there is the dress. I recommend pongee for two reasons: first because pongee is so soft, it looks like a new frock after each scrubbing and second because it is the most inexpensive silk object available. The pongee is the most satisfactory. A nice pattern which is easily made, easily ironed, and yet is hard to find is signed for this costume. It is a complete costume in itself and does not require a string of bedsheets to be properly effect. Only three and three-fourth yards of the material is required so there will be plenty of pongee facing of the collar and cuffs and for the embroidery cotton and sewing silk. The roll collar, cuffs and pongee is low in the back is a popular French ideal. The embroidery on the bands that cover the hips is not necessary but it adds two interesting spots difficult to the dress. It is not difficult to do with wool or embroidery cotton if the white pongee facing is used. A touch of white is almost necessary to make it be making.

It was followed by a day would be here have been and heard the remarks of President Cannon. He made one more strong address, and I was delighted to hear him and to know just how the welcome made me feel. He said that he heard I had crossed over Jordan, and there I held. His wife and daughter had shed a few crocodile tears, and she also said "The Lord himself hath taken him away, and I thank God for so doing." I was also told that she said "although I am a little cripple, and feel that I am on the ragged edge of the grave."

Miss Eyes was present last evening when a bunch of women met that were expected to attend the Business League, and the time they were going to have. Why were they meeting the same, the women will now return to their homes and all you will have, is a guilty conscience. Miss Eyes was near when you were knocking your friend, it was not yet, that you hurt yourself most. Miss Eyes was in a neighborhood last week and heard some of the ladies discussing a gentleman who visited a prominent street too much. Miss Eyes would advise these women to saint their own affair, if the couple you're discussing isn't in the same season, why group and cause trouble when you are not benefited. If Mrs. ... doesn't speak to you, why worry, it isn't going to make you or break you. If you count on counts and demand her respect.
Talking about what has happened "won't get it" its not what you have been, its what you are now, its what you are going to have flattered to have this young woman's favor.

THE DALLAS EXPRESS, DALLAS, TEXAS, SATURDAY, JULY 5, 1924
Col. Midnight's Weekly Letter.
(Continued from Page 4.)
Monday morning, I found Bishop A. Gregg, right at the stable with his automobile car carry waitress, and he was to be his guest. Now just think of it, he is Bishop of the A. M. E. school, not if otherwise ordered, yet he is still receiving his friends to the burgess just like he did for it otherwise was simply an ordinary preacher.
For four years he has been the efficient president of Wilberforce University, the institution has ever had or perhaps ever will have. You see him, he is just showed out and when the general church told him to step up last May in Louisville, he, he just showed out and free at last. He acted like a man getting religion for the first time and when the general church happened I suppose. Now he did not just because he was made bishop try to bishop away from the people, but he was made bishop try the first thing then was to go back to the University and close up his work like a man, which he
He made a great report of his work at the institute, and when he was through making his report he went to the institute, and thanked the trustees for the honor. He had some important things to say. Now he has moved to visit the institute to visit this country, raise some money for his work in South Africa and in due time will sail for South Africa his field of labor for the next four years. That is exactly what I intend to do for at the close of the year, and that I say that I need to work right here in America.
Bishop Gregg, turned the institution to the trustee in as good a shape as he was permitted to do, and he was appointed the figure head, but then I am not here to discuss that, but to remind you that Prof. Gilbert Jones, the son of letters was elected successor to Bishop Gregg, and he is now the president of Wilberforce. Joshua H. Jones, the son of letters was given him full support and it is then that things will happen. Of course there were many who did not die, but Joshua H. Jones has been elected. I am sure that he will have the full support of Bishop Joshua H. Jones, for this reason and then father has educated son for this date and age. I with him welt, and I shall be delighted to you about him from time to time.
From Wilberforce I fade it across the country, being toled over there every time I see a person by Prof. Charles S. Smith, the head of the business department. Prof. Smith did not see me, but he loved me, done, and honey it was one more delightful ride. I was there in time to catch the special from his car, and both he and I were done, and all others were bed cars. I tell you them people came into this town in style, and both they were in style, and both they were in with them, and that made me one of the big men. They were in dogs. I had much to say and to match to do: with the crowd. I was right Charley on the spot, so they are away, but this church is a little lack of brooms, but I am not going to tell you about some of your business and I think you should attend to your own affairs. I will be able to tell you so much about Cleveland, but it is one of the cities of Ohio, and I admit it. I like to see it and to be on in good style.
Side by side with Mr. Thomas is that wonderful wife of his who is an export on the piano. She is and groan and talk. Swe is like fine. Now these two macaques, who play have a handsome home. I can see Mr. Thomas singing his song to it now "Rock in the house" and the name of his home, for that song brought him more dollars — with which he made the purchase. He would ride a thousand miles just to get to hear him stir that same time. I was just at home. He was in some rook. I have eaten some of his cooking and I am many able people of some of the at the front of the class and will be there when the world goes away. I will have something to tell — next week I hope. I feel that this is a wonderful world.

ure. However, that did not phase him. He made some casual remarks. Still I ignored him, and because of that he ambled over to me, and I saw something in my ear about "you high-up educated nigerian girl." It was then that I turned and my clenched fist with all my might. I have always been a vigilant from sturdy stock. The blow hurt him so that he staggered and floundered around. Malaise screamed. Before I could follow her, and so intended, the man caught me in his arms to do me an injury. I was caught running out of the barbershop in time to see me struggling and came a snarl with a tiger cain their car and reached the walk. They acted as if they were going to attack me, but the shorter of the two happened to spy us. My friends say that it was very pretty then. Probably the neck. The impact was stingening. He turned a dirty yellow coat in his head, and he clumped sprawlingly to the walk. Floy falling over his body, unable to
"In less than half a minute the street was thonged with angry men. They came from everywhere the very ground. There was shouting and cursing and tumult. Floyd was shouting and the mulling thrung. We fought shoulder to shoulder like tiger们. Then some one struck me and I was shouting and the consciousness in the backroom of the little barbershop. Frightened men and women told me what he was doing. He was in Floyd terrify after he had become exhausted, and then they came to the barbershop. In some way I was reached home. Maisie was with me. She was in a worse mental state than I was. I was shouting and the disbelief I tried to be brave. For the next several hours, excitement reached the dangerous point. I grew more disbelief and disdain that the man struck by Floyd was dead—stone dead. Floyd had broken his neck with that one
"I cannot accurately describe the night that followed. Everytime I think of it the horrors come. I used to fear it would drive me mad. But I have been brave, and I have begun to understand beginning with sunburn, the riffraff and scum of the community paraded the miserable streets, the bloodied skulling wolves. They prowled through the alleys, congregated on the corners and cluttered the house, the booth and fire and destruction was in the air. The tension was the tension of hall itself. No one can have been through the furnace themselves, can describe that horrible feeling. In every shape and form, people were bowing their heads in devoted supplication to the heaven. It was a night we never knew.
"How we ever not back to the house I do not know. An angel must have cried and guarded us. And all that I missed on
the five cinderella floors of Purgatory while the man I loved—my fiance—hay stark and still and bloody—wrapped in the chains of a starry skirt to keep vigil over his body. "For a month I hoped between life and death. Then one morning my breast and looked down into the little face of this child—my I will mention here that the murder of Floyd Darrow was scahely a nine days wonder. No questions were asked, no investigation made. The papers merely nibbled at the story. Some of them ignored altogether. They did not even know who he was man enough to fight for the woman that was to be his wife. He died zame, died zame, died zame, died fighting, and snarling like a tiger, spitting on his hatred in the faces of his brothers, but that is all they said.
"Story writers say that mothers do not desert their children. They want the biterter condensation. I agree with them that it is s worse than cowardly for a mother to leave a case I could not gifure any other person. I did not mean to teach little Floyd. I only wanted to earn a living. My whole life was wrapped up in thought of gayety, pleasure, or good times. I was not seeking happiness. My happiness did that I was going to Louis Memphis. I was at Bradshaw. All that I was seeking was a living—an honest "First we went to Atlanta. From there I drifted on and on until I came to Louis Memphis. From there I drifted to Chicago. From Chicago here I had hard time. Good luck seemed to be plenty. I seemed plentyful—good jobs. The farther North I came the more I felt I was in this city. When I arrived in this city I was beginning to feel that there was something a woman could live with.
"Then, my husband, I met you. You were different from any man I had ever seen. You were not handsome—for I have been handsome men; you were not better dressed—for I have been handsome men; you were not smarter—for I have seen the world's best smart elites; but you were not smarter—for I could not compass it. I seemed to me that the fates had ordained that you should be the bolder of men; that you were not suitably romantic entitlement that caused me to regard you as such. For I was no longer a foolish little girl; that you were not threads of romance; that I was a woman with a woman's unconqueror spirit that it was unconquerable.
"You were so wise, no good, gentle so sympathetic that I could understand and love and pleasure. I learned to worship you. You taught me a love that was new and wonderful. I learned Floyd, but this new love that you whispered into the ears of my humanky soul was so vastly different from the whole life that was changed. I was made anew. I was evaded. In my life, I was not my poor little baby. I forgot the tragic story of Bradshaw. I forgot the early struggles and challenges of my life. I only remembered that you were the greatest man in the world to me. I will be continued.
