SLAYS POLE CAT WITH MEAT CLEAVER
LURAY, Va. August 23--Mrs. Daniel W. Lake, armed with a meat knife, broke out among her pet dogs and her house-house late Thursday night, to investigate the combat that had outraged her pet dogs and right of her, feathers were flying to left of her, feathers flew all about her while she waited to see what she was doing. She waited until the feathers of battle cleared away, and closed the door behind her to make sure the enemy should not escape. Two firefighters broke out of the house and moved to see what those eyes would do with her eyes and moved to see what those eyes would do with her cleaver, and when neighbors revived her they found that their biggest pole-cat ever seen in Sage County, it is said to have weighed 41 pounds.

The most welcome release which has come to the Express in recent days is that of the State Department of Education on Negro schools of the State. In recent years there has been a great deal of speculation as to the true status of Negro schools but all of the things said or thought were preface speculation purely. But now that real figures are available some real idea of the condition of them may be formed.
A study of the release affords some very interesting and at the same time unfortunate conditions. For instance, out of a total of 6397 Negro teachers reports on the preparation of 4290 of them discovered the fact that 1327 were graduates only, 400 were college or university graduates. The remainder were unaccounted for as far as preparation was concerned.

ASSOCIATION.
Here is a situation which should challenge the attention of every person who is interested in the perfection of Negro schools to the highest point of efficiency of which they are capable. Only 502 graduates of college rank in a system of 2427 schools which employ 5397 teachers and instruct 199-726 children is a percentage so small as to give room for the speculation as to whether it is possible out of such a small number to give to the children those urges to higher and wider search for knowledge that is so vital in their years of public school life. That speculation is not born of the belief that only college graduates are fitted to give and impart ambition for continued study, but it is made in the form of a series of experiments with advanced thinkers and has had then opportunity to see more of what real wide study means and are therefore able more easily to impart some of the desire for it in the minds of those whom they teach.

was never stationed the white teacher, mother has it been misused. The teacher was officiated with the floral month. It is a plain, seaside, conservative newspaper, which primes us to call to疼 the saintening breccia files we do not faithful line: It professes a patriotism as broad as our nationalism, and justice judged justice encapsied all the territory encapsied by the Humane race. This iserty high ground, a place of great beauty. Ways of the press come up and stand with us. This ground is inaly. D. RING
ADVERTISING DALLAS IN OTHER SECTIONS
ADVERTISING DALLAS IN OTHER SECTIONS
The most ambitious project that Dallas Negro business men have foiled in years is the National Negro Business League to hold its meeting of 1928 here. Two representatives appear on the regular program of the League will extend the invitation that will invitation be accompanied by invitations signed by the Mayor of the city and one from the Mayor of the city. There may be those who will feel that the coming of the National Negro Business League is that is not now possible. But it is a fact that the business enterprise conducted by our people is the most important institution of the general public in other section of the country it represents those people with those concerns. And that contact can best be encouraged to our offices of the councils.
In the contemplation of these statistics it is hardy fair to presume that the Department of Education is together plausible for the condition just mentioned. But it is fair to conclude that it could not maintain to the extent that it does were there the sort of interest in Negro education as such that is necessary. And in this connection it is only
Texas is richer and much more progressive than many of those who live in other sections of the country. The fertile field that is, generally known, and just as the merchants of Dallas through their inbound customers made it generally known that "it in Dallas," just so we can we stimulate to desired interest an object of our business, the outside business world by advertising our part in the general economic scheme of this city, and make the amount of good that contact with this group of our business leaders will mean. We need to know them and they need to know us. We need the League, there in every reason to hope that there be new ideas brought to us and greater respect for them. Who then will know us better.
The bone of contention of those teachers of Dallas who shirred their duty in the preparation for the National Association of Teachers in Colored Schools was that they fear to contribute to the fund which was being raised by the teachers of Dallas because of the danger of fraud on the part of those who handled their moneys. Many of the teachers however had no such fears and they contributed and made the affair a success. It was found after all of the expenses of the entertainment were paid that there was sufficient money to refund to them all but the amount that they had paid as a State Association. There was no demurring about it. The teachers discussion about it. The committee through Prof. Rhoads simply malled to each of them a check to cover the amount due them.
Judging by the large number of women of our race in our city who are sending their husband and newborns to their rest by car, we can be said to have attained the same notch of psychology as man. No longer is it sensible to test competition of men with the male of the species leads us to believe that the ban on the execution of the same person is to the extent that those who are found guilty of wilful murder should pay the same penalty as the guilty of negligence with them that they seem to think that they can murder with innocence. Let a few of them be convicted of wholesale murder record of women will decrease.
There must come a time in the history of our life everywhere when the general public will come to a realization of its own ability to guarantee the safety of the concerns in which it is interested and to see to it that those who carry out its wishes do the square thing. There was no occasion for the fears of those teachers. They above all others have realised that was in their power to guarantee the safety of the standing and handling of realities. In fact, they had no real fears. They only sought for something which to hide in order not to do their duty in maintaining their reputation of their city and state.
There can be no real program
there as long as the ability to cooper

foolish men and backward race

The action of the local committee is nothing unusual. It is only what should have happened. It is the thing that most frequently happens. It only remains for the general committee to decide what is necessary, content that their trust, will not be misapplied.

Another really unfortunate situation, probably the most unfortunate of the whole number is the fact that out of the total number of teachers more than one-fourth of them have graduated from no school. They have not even completed the high school courses. How can they teach? What can they do to improve the condition of the counties in which they work? How do they gain admittance to the system school and how do they hold their schools? These are questions which arise at once from a contemplation of this report and they are questions which all of the qualified Negro teachers of the state should have answered in some way as soon as possible. This report indicates that one-third of the students at the state almost, there are 1827 of them and 1009 who are high school graduates only, the two classes are almost of one kind—and yet there are those who would boast of the splendid condition of Negro schools in Texas.
This would not mean much to us if the vast majority of the workers among us were taken care of places in our economic life. In view of the fact that the old system of apprenticeship has practically broken down, this means that the great number that formerly worked in the skilled crafts so vital to our economic progress has been leashed to an apprehensive extent of our boys and girls working would to-day find large numbers of our boys and girls working in the school. The vast number leaving school find themselves thrown out if the world without adequate training is not in good health. They are forced to "pick up" an occupation wherever they can possibly get it. Some success has been fault of their own and are deceived to a life time of drudgery at an early age. Industry and the community as well as the individual may the penalty for these unfortunate
It would appear that in this one instance there is a job for the state association of Colored Teachers that would amply repay them for all of the time and trouble which its correction would cost. At the same time that this horde of ill prepared persons is attempting to instruct the children of the state there are many whose training, if not what is generally considered complete, is more in keeping with what we are generally accustomed to think of as necessary for employment. In this case the state association must employment. This condition should no longer exist. There must come some sort of remedy for it. And that remedy is in the hands of the State Association if those who are at its head can but realize the possibilities of it.
The untrained worker is migratory. He is a bird of passage lightning only for a time, perhaps only long enough to supply his
In behalf of these teachers who have qualified for their tasks, there should be some change in this condition, for the fact that there are those unfit for their tasks who are regularly employed, takes the premium away from preparedness. There can be no real progress in Negro education and national education to the high plane of real preparedness for good citizenship as long as they are denied the opportunity to have the fundamentals taught them. Ignorant teachers cannot give them that sort of instruction. The condition is pivable in the extreme and it should challenge the attention of every teacher and parent who realizes the necessity for the best in the matter of education. The condition is that of other children of America, has made it necessary that the tumbos efforts be made in order that it be improved.

been a greater interest manifested in Negro schools then was formerly the case and it is fair to presume that that interest will continue to be manifested in increasing degree if by a strong public opinion on the part of Negro teachers
they are making the general run of head sizes quite a bit larger in the new fall nats — which proves conclusively that all women have hair that are not going to. At least it will answer the cry of so many people we know, for more comfortable hats for the long haired.
It must happen that the condition of Negro schools as far as the qualification of teachers is concerned must change and every means of bringing it about must be employed. The State Department must be made to realize that it is the earnest desire of all of the general public that improvement made. It must become the paramount issue of the state Association of Teachers and every means must be used to see to it that speedy relief from this state of affairs be had. Only by a decided change can it ever be hoped that Negro schools will become as efficient as they should.
Use your summer vacation but do not abuse it. Exercise is the good of your body warm and relax for the benefit of your state of mind, but do not over do it. You can value your youth, health and beauty. Too often in thought to mean only rest and pleasure but there is another thing for more important which is the real definition of the word. An interval in any procedure" and that translated literally means change. You can value the full value unless the whites' routine is forgotten for a little while. Think new thoughts out loud. Relax and relax shut out unpleasant things, open the mind to fresh impressions, swim in the cold water and dangle in swimming etc. must be in moderation. Use your summer vacation in the best possible investments to make for health and beauty. A shower or tub, followed by a brisk rub down in also absolutely essential
Find a comfortable place, shut out of your mind anything that is tense; build Air Candle for a room; find a comfortable place, shut out of the fire. There is wonderful rest in this exercise.

It is a lesson that has been blamed in dismal letters across the corridors of history since the crucifixion of Jesus, brushes without brawn cannot make and maintain a great prosecco. Negro everywhere to take a standing bump out of his racial surrounding and conditions, and to make truth, which history has time after time revealed, that a mace of only miners can survive, that miners must be balanced by the doers.

Changing Holiday
When changing my home to a morning bake or a day of planning the mates together with small safety pins which I keep on a small cushion ready for use, I always put them on my back and some back with the other clothes all coated, thus making much valuable time and patience, and I am always careful with the families of children, and the older children can be taught to as-

The What-Not Column.
By R. P. Edwards for
The Associated Negro Press
Birmingham, Alabama. — Every man should feel proud of this wonderful race of cura, and especially of our women. Have you ever stopped to think of the great women we have produced, and who are now serving, trying to work out the destiny of the human race? Have you thought about what they are doing? Do you ever wonder if you can fight? If you would just stop and think a minute, you would truly say they are followers of Jesus Christ.
The meeting was presided over by Miss Hallie Quinn Brown, of Omaha, Nebraska, who was she just a great woman. You have known her for years. I knew of her and her greatness just as much as she was a hopper, and I am old enough to vote now. She is in one of our best colleges and has served her people in every particular. She has shown her love and friendship for her race and has served her international work. Just one trip to Europe, and just one speech to the world, she has brought back $15,000 to Wilberforce University. She has been active in many organizations over the last year and she is right now.
Miss Brown taught in Wilberforce, and she is a fine reader and writer. Her work, her training has won for her fame. We all know her, and what she is worth to the nation is a great great woman. She retired from the presidency, and was succeeded by Maclaudie Bohneu of Dayna Fl
Mrs. Bethune is one of the women of our race who is doina to the race, a worker, a speaker, a wonderful character. She has dedicated her life to the upbring of the boys and has been a teacher, an inspiration. She is putting pop into life. She is a truly leader, and well trained leader at the school. There, for I want to keep you posted from time to time on the good work being done by this noble character. There, for I cannot start to mention all the great women who were there. They were orators, painters, all they were great. I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. J. C. Napier, Mamie Nandle H. Murray, Mamie M. E. Stewart, Colymer, of Florida; Dr. Mary Wren of Chicago; Mr. Rebecca Walton, of South Carolina; Mrs. Elizabeth C. Stewart, of the Florida School—noted woman from Florida, noted woman from Texas; noted women from Texas; noted women from Florida, brakas, Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Louisiana-Mississippi Georgia, and I believe every other in this Union had representatives.
Not this not merely a big convention of women with no purity, but of women with all things. They are women who stand for something.
We do not know just what we are proud to tell this country. I am proud to tell you that things are just happening. I heard some of you mention the other remarkable woman of this race of ours. My Mrs. Myrtle Foster-Cook, of Kansas, was a race of ours.
146. What remarkable program was made by the Colored Y. M. C. A. within ten years?
That the Colored Young Women's Christian Association has made a more rapid advancement in their education, a similar nature is a remarkable fact; when it is considered that in 1812 it had but one city and one student secretary on the national board and ten years later (1822) it had seven National Secretaries, 100 workers in seven centres with fifty-seven branches and 7,000 young women, the national secretary girls have been reached in various ways during a period of ten years.
What was the Jerry McHeary program in the summer of 1851, a colored man by the name of Jerry McHeary was arrested under the Punjab Prohibition Act, a Missouri slave murder, McHeary must an attempt to escape but failed. A descent was made upon the hall
She was as busy as could be and
I am sure you will realise it when I tell you she is the woman
who is keeping them posted on what is going on. They had reports from the various departments, and from every state reports touching every phase of life, and then they spoke right out in church to speak. We have heard that wonderful response made by Miss Elizabeth Carter of New Bedford. Honey she just skunt the cat with Mayor Dover, who was booked to deliver an address of welcome, and did not show up. She said that he was just in his alphabet in politics, and to ignore a body like that meant to retard his progress. The proper use of the ballot now in the hands of women would bring greater recognition to the race. "She said because she," she said because we are here."
Texas stirred a horrice next when a representative complained of not being represented on the ground of complaint. Texas was too large to be overlooked. I could, just name and name and work and work and work, new officers. I had a fine time. I spent over a week in Chicago and then I shook the dust off of the building, place leaving over the C. & E. I, and L. & N, reaching here last Saturday, and now I am writing to the Grand Lodge of the Grand Court, place leaving to Dothan, Alabama, to be there with the Grand Lodge of Knights of Pythias and the Grand Lodge of the Grand Court about the Grand Court from time to time, headed by that wonderful character of our race. Mrs. woman who believes in doing things of her people and honey she is doing them. She is putting education within the grasp of people, otherwise be neglected and grow up like weeds. Her real worth is this people may never be known to the world, who keeps a record of all needs.
She is a *wonderful woman*, she has often had something to say about her, E. Poreche, of New Orleans, who has just finished her summer at the University, vanced English, Literature 82; vanced English, 80; Negro History 50, and still she is going on to attend among the women of the age.
The people are getting ready for the National Baptist convention to be held in New York. I hope you will be there, for I am going to be there myself. God bless you. I will bring this letter to a stop. J. O. MIDDIGHT.
