WOMEN ASK SEPARATION OF SOUTHERN BALLOT BOXES
Floridian Writes to Republican National Headquarters Asking That Separate Ballot Boxes For Negroes be Had in Election
CHICAGO, Sept. 13—The time of political ideas is on Louis R. McKay, of West Haven, Fl., White Hall, of West Haven, and an idea of having black and white ballot boxes. She sends a telegram to Republican National Committee asking them to "let me offer an original suggestion before campaign gets too hot." Since ballots are on white paper and race discrimination is an issue, she lettering why not make change for Colored voters by using black ballet shoes for ballots for all races. In all the cases of Republicanism have been maintained by a closed rank formation of all the races. I would rather think of people alike. To adopt white and black voters, I would ask them to drive thousands of Colored voters to think of some cure before the from our standard. The Colored malades that you mention have access to the party of man today to the world. The only tax muddle Harry even got into when he chased the revenue taxmiddle for not having the money he worked with Jackson's case is one of the most remarkable in court annals. He not only worked for the court, he worked with money pay, confident that his mistress would amply provide for him. That it was evident from the testimony of 10 witnesses, some of whom will become witnesses, of whom will be stated that Miss Montagne had repeatedly said she would now be given pay for 23 years' service, but to the oak fact that six years of his time is worth anything to him. NEW CANDIDATE FROM WACO, TEXAS, MR. P. R. MA-LONE HAS ENTERED THE RACE
The first period of the Dallas Express Circulation Campaign contest closed Saturday night. Tens of thousands of credits were issued and every candidate profiled mighty. A large number of votes secured during the final stages of the campaign were polled Saturday and appear in today's standing.
It is a strange coincidence—something unusual in affairs of this kind—but each of the leading club members benefited so equally during the period just closed, that without hairline figuring it would be impossible to determine the leader today. As was stated in an article last week. It was hard to believe that the ordinary close one throughout. This was entirely unlooked-for, as usually one or two candidates stand out as having a big lead. Such is positively not the case in this campaign.

IMMIGRANTS
NEW YORK, Sept. 15 - A letter from Australia arrives by Mise Thelmia Berick, of the staff of the National Association for the Advancement of Women, sets for the restrictions against the entry of Colored people into Australia. The bar against Negroes and Asiatics, known as the "white Australian Policy Act" does not affect the entry of white Australians ready in the country, only those desiring to enter. Says the letter:
"The Negro people here settled in this country prior to the passing of the 'white Australian Policy Act' does not affect them. The only way others can come here without any burdens is as theatrical work. Then you can get in the country without any burdens. But very few of them now sometimes some Americans. West Indians or Africans. Boat, the master has to put up a hundred pound bond to the boat. That'll allow that they leave this country with the boat. If they desert ship, the master loses his bond. For Abassiani, 800 miles long and 725 miles wide, is cut off from the Red Sea by the colonial possession of Italy, France and England. He therefore seeks markets for his products, particularly the coffee of Zaragoza, and that of Madrid in the world. "Delicious coffee from the land of the Queen of Bharas."

Famous Boston Lawyer Seems Peeved at G. O. P. Tactics in North and East; Declares He May Support Davis and Bryan
CHICAGO, Sept. 12—William H. Lewis, of Boston, announced in the New York Times, Democrat, a few days ago that he proposes to support the ticket of Davis and Bryan, rather than the ticket of Coolidge and Davis. Observers are wondering a personal pense in striving to put his all against the terrors of the degenerating Klux. Lewis comes from Massachusetts, the state of Calvin Coolidge, Republican nominee for President of the United States. Lewis is a graduate of Amherst, the alma mater of President Coolidge. The records show that Lewis has on occasion, paid his respect to President Coolidge at the White House and has been cordially received, as other good Americans have not been "polluted" what ever may presume. He was not been "polluted" what ever may presume. He was a director of the division of Colored voters, the name of Lewis was discussed along with that of many others. It is uncommon that a president of the division of a director there is a letter of a date later in July from Lewis in which he urged the president of the Director of race to nominate a former attorney William C Matthews of Boston, also a Harvard man, and have Lewis hold forth in Boston, he has been named, for Director, is Lewis

DALLAS, TEXAS,
HERE'S HOW THEY STAND IN THE DALLAS EXPRESS
‘CIRCULATION CAMPAIGN NO MATTER WHO
WINS THE NASH SEDAN
‘Thousands of people of Dallas and ‘counties
x9 intrested ln tab rican of the Sale pects Ceca
tion Campaign, not so much to which Club Member is finally
pronounced the winner of the NASH SEDAN, but for per-
Sonal reasons.
‘Maybe you had not thought of it, but regardless of
whether or not you have a favorite in the race, you are per-
Sonally and vitally interested fn this campaign "Ifyou are
an advertiser and nearly every one advertises some time in
the year, this eampaign will have been the means of making
it possible for you to place your message before a greater
number of families than has ever been possible before—and
‘that goes regardless of whether you reside in Dallas or in
some of the outlying communities. To each of the thous-
ands of new and old subseribers, this eampaign will, by pla-
cing before you a greater volume of live advertisements, re-
‘ll in almost inealeulable profit to you and members of your
family.

This must cease. There must come a time in our racial life that they now are. It would not be profitable in the first place; it becomes fully known and appreciated and when it will be the high pleasure of all concerned to see to it that every aid is given to the people. Pillman cars, chairs, cars, and all of the other more convenient modes of American travel should be made available to all who are invited to America. But in the South they are so. They, in time must be made to be as it is provided that the people of Negro rug far outweigh the prejudices of those who have made it impossible for him to travel dearly. It is dangerous and fails to travel to a given point in a body over the road chosen. It hinders the coming of
easily efforts at the improvement of Negro railroad accommodation can be made. If it could but be realized as fully as it is true that Negroes in buying property are seeking nothing but better living conditions and modern conveniences and that they buy only what is offered them by white realers, these questions would be settled in the deliberation of the organizations of realers and not in the press and by public discussion where be forgotten in the desire of the Negroes to adjust people can travel from place to place the South as human beings and not into the cities. To be satisfied with the power to settle them would lead as it has in a few residential Negro districts like Wheaty Place and Queen

It is not afflicted with the illness that causes the streak, but unexamined, concomitant nausea, which knit new to catch the panic; breasts; files we doublet like; It professes a parietal position; It is low of room humility; Justice covers all the terriory; It preys pretty high ground, but we live on it and we preserve. Railread Accommodations and Special Delegations
One of the most important questions for the Negroes of Texas to find a solution for is the matter of better accommodations in the railroads of the state. For years the Negroes have been discontent with the stall like accommodations, filled with dirt and conductors, butcher boys and all of the other trainees who may desire to come into them, in which our people are forced to ride in the stall. The Negroes call them from town to town.
In the past two years it has been found that if there is to be any relief found for this condition, it must come as the result of proving to those who have in their charge the railroads of railroad states that they are good and that it will pay in dividends to see it that the accommodations for them are better. Special trains have been run by the heads of the various grand lodges of the states to 'their annual' conventional church delegations have chartered special cars for the transportation of goods to every case, special attention has been called to the amount of money which has been spent with sequestration with a view to making that knowledge the basis for a demand that the government be improved.
But the general Negro public makes that course very hard for the public to understand, or real or fancied, reasons for disagreement does not use the chosen road in a body. It has impeded the representatives split and delegations and factual as well that the representatives split and delegations and factual as well that making it impossible for a large amount of money as was given to the fight at proving that there is profit in Negro travel. The more there must come a time in our racial life. When the full import of attempts becomes fully known and apprehensible, high pleasure of all concerned to see it to that it may aid is given to the cars, chair cars, and all of the more convenient modes of American travel should be America. But in the South they are not Thoy, is Sina must be. And in the North they are that the dollars involved in Negro travel far outweigh the dollars involved in travel decently. Every time a delegation fails to travel to a give
THE OLD ORDER CHANGETH
Somewhere in Holy Writ are words to the effect that "the old order changeh, giving place to the new" and nowhere is it more evident than in the changes which are taking place in the personnel of the leadership of the race of which we are a part. Every day brings news of the passing of some well known and well respected figure. Death in many instances is making it necessary that there come forth some newer and younger leader to enter into the work so well begin by those who are passing from the scene of action. Particularly is this ever constant change taking place in the ranks of churchmen, journalists and the race of the race of the races, have been most potent in shaping the character and determining the direction of the progress of races since the beginning of time.
What will be the viewpoint of those who will succeed those who are passing? What will be their outlook on the life which faces the race? What will be the character of the service which they will render to their times as they assume the mantles which are falling upon their shoulders? These are questions that are important because there are things that are being considered as we face the prospect of following the lead of those who are new. We will be content to go along the same old beaten paths, which often have been those of the least resistance; or will we demand that the beaten track be discarded when occasion seems to demand it and strike out more boldly for the accomplishment of those objectives which it is vitally necessary that we understand. In education there is vital need of a sort of readjustment that the older followers of the profession did not feel the necessity of making. In these days and times it has become necessary that the mind of the masses be directed toward the necessity of pursuing those lines of education which tend to result in the greatest amount of ability on the part of the students. In education there is the need for their living standards to conform to the demands of the times in which they live. In order that this result be brought about there must be a greater demand for the amount of appropriation for Negro school funds that is just due those schools. There must be a greater premium put upon the employment of prepared Negro teachers. There must be a stricter supervision of the work of those teachers in the education received by the children under them is to improve.
cordance with the laws laid down by The Great Teacher. There must come a greater vision on the part of the ministry of its responsibility for the temporal welfare of those under its direction. It must have a better sense of values as to the relation of the income of its members to the sort of demands which should be made upon it for the investment in church buildings to the exclusion of investment in those things which would, in time, make the erection of better church buildings more easily accomplished. The ministry in the Negro race has the greatest among us, particularly to operate changes, awake to it possibilities and begin to become more effective.
The press, now more powerful as an agency for good in the race than ever before, faces the period of its greatest efficiency if those who head the various journals of the race will but see to it that all of their strivings are made in the interest of a greater appreciation of the masses which are under the pressure of the need to operate necessary for the development of the race along all lines. in the field of journalism there is need for a revised set of standards. There must be more real devotion to the development of the reading and cultural taste of the masses of the race than to the creation of a greater love for the sensational. We have always had higher appreciation for the sensational than for the more constructive but less sensational things. The height of our development in this regard has been increased by the efforts to follow to the last ditch, those things which have demanded every day faithfulness devoid of the aplause of the onlooking public.
If there ever comes a time when our masses will fully appreciate the need for a plan every day to devotion to the pursuit of the better things of this life, it will come as the result of the efforts of the press, skillfully but constantly in the development of their confidence in their own ability to perform.
The old order changeth. We hope fortunately. But the efforts of the future must be along well directed lines. Those lines must be well thought out.
THE NEGRO RESIDENTIAL SITUATION IN DALLAS
Again the question of where the Negro shall live has bubbed up in the same place as formerly and there is a new plan on foot to see to it that there is a separate residential district created in which all of the Negroes of the city will live. This latest plan comes from the deliberations of the Community Protective League of North Dallas which has been established by the city government by Negroes in the region of Haskell and Washington avenues.
The plan of the League as made public calls for the selling by Negroes of all of the property which they own in the city proper and the settling by them of a district which they own in the county somewhere. It is declared that the Mayor will be asked to aid in the accomplishment of this objective.
While it is not impossible, it is highly improbable that the plan of this league as made public will carry to the extent that is now seemingly hoped for. There is no stretch of the imagination by which it is possible to conceive of the plan of this league as made public to sell their holdings and move with their families to Do.
THE DALLAS EXPRESS, DALLAS, TEXAS, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1924
For The Woman Who Cares
City and others which have been opened and placed on the market and quickly sold out to those Negroes who were able to buy homes of the better sort and who sought decent living conditions.
There can never come a complete solution of the residential problem in Dallas or in an other Southern city till the facts in the case are faced fully and courteously. It must be realized that it is as impossible for the Negro to live in contact with all of the enlightenment and American civilization of the South with people who cannot intimate living conditions as it is for any other people. He cannot be a part of the general American scheme and fail to improve in his thinking. As he saves with the idea in mind of owning a better place in which his wife and family may live, he seeks a home. The white renter does the rest. He seeks nothing but a decent home. He cannot govern where it is located. If he could, experience has proven that he would seek it in any other place than a neighborhood in which his own people were not in the majority.
In the consideration of this question as it has arisen in North Dallas, let those who think of it realize this. Dallas today does not offer a single decent district in which Negroes can buy and build decent homes. If they are to continue to become a part of the better sort of life of the city, they can be helped to improve their living condition. In helping them to do so, the development of Dallas into a city of owners of good homes. And home owner have always been found to be good citizens.

During the last six months, the editor of this publication—the writer of these lines—has changed to visit the courts of Birmingham and Civil Departments. The study was interesting and conditions at the court have not been to notice the disposition and attitude in Negro cases and especially the manager of the Negro and civil departments. The first thing one would notice is the man-lawyers in getting something out of Negro criminality and the great majority of the cases the Negro in his blah-mouthed method, the man-lawyers in fences proves his undying, when, as a matter of fact, a straightforward expression is used, if a guilty, certainly less punishment. We felt at times that certain persecutors too stapled and sometimes too stabbon to give evidence that would be sufficient for or against them. We judge in most cases had to depend upon such evidence for the Negro to staple and sometimes to stabbon to give evidence that Negroes get into too many frivolous things that must be settled in order to avoid them largely because of ignorance and lack of contact with superior and lack of contact with superior and lack of both races. The more prerivative class of Negro people are more in contact with white people than with Negroes.
advanced elements of their own race, and in contact with white people they are busily engaged in some service where they are and likely to have the proper teacher and considerations, from a civil viewpoint, that they are entitled to be given eminent status. Thus they become almost easy to fire. We have criminals in court with no

Good sense in selecting Wardrobe for College
The girl with a minimum equipment wisely chosen stands as great a chance of happiness in a world of cloribate state with everything she was able to do: perhap even a greater chance, for to take advantage of common sense, of common sense, a virtue closely akin to good taste and to make common sense to frequently use. Frequently, too, the school or college will specify in its literature the girl's wardrobe—and the too-decided butterfly may find, alas, that certain of her colorful gowns are too small for the trunks that go atticward.

knowledge that they're committed a crime against their state or that they have disrupted in any way the rights of society. There is a remedy. The advanced element of the Negro people must see the wisdom at home and work and become more missionary at home and reach the humble city and community life. These conditions cannot be changed by court procedure; they cannot be changed by the will of the people. The remedy must come in awakening the conscience of the Negro people to self respect and self importance in order to feel the depths of crime and know the import of the
