With more than pass interest I have noticed the warm discussion of politics from press and platform. I wish now to add my own opinion to the usual others now before the public. Surely the political situation of the nation is unusual in comparison with the rest of the pagnas. We we usually have only two major parties we now A view of the huge chorus directed by Prof. H. B. It is true, that in recent years we have had to work in our by any party, is also true that the republican party has failed to handle legislation designed for good, in a masterly manner at the same time, but when they were making efforts in our behalf, however feebly or however ably, it was our duty to support them, that effectively offered canadat. Now then, we say the republican party South is controlled by us, and we are to grant us the privilege to which we are undoubtedly entitled. This may be true and is true, that the republican trot is written from us. We alone are to blame. Our indifference, our feeble political efforts account for the failure. Our differences with the present republican leaders, in Texas, our different parties, in Texas, our different party and between whom there is equal privilege and equal standing, it takes them to maintain their privileges, then let us like men stand up and offer battle. In the third party, there is no chance for them to win, so what does it matter if they are for us or against us. If the biggest man in the history of Roosevelt is the third party go, what may we expect of a man who only holds an affection of foreigners and radicals. Or if, as some say, LaFolette was a fair chance to win, then he would face with a crisis. What then should be our course? Since the Republican party came to us when we were much more dire and galled than the one they face, then we have a more honorable opportunity to a life long friend and at the same time increase our claim to friendship. The Dallas Express takes the stand that we unqualifiedly can untill every prescind, county and district strength of the race from the smallest convention to the largest convention of Texas will receive the same recognition at the hands of the Republican party as does Georgia. If we leave the party to the Lilly-whites, it will be what we the Republicans have not have on, another year will see no third party, and so we will be out entirely; in other words we will be out entirely and no where to go." R. KING. THE ELLA B. MOORE THEATRE OPENS There has been no more auspicious occasion in the city of Dallas than the opening on Monday night of the Ella B. Moore Theatre, both in point of attendance and in point of representation. On the program of that night were representatives, only of the city government of the Dallas, but the city government itself was represented by the Mayor and that representation was of the sort that convinced the public of a sort of regard of the city government. The effort of the race to make progress that is not commonly seen in the South. It indicated that there is no bar to the successful operation of large concerns by members of the race who were correct. It also proved that in this as in many other respects, Dallas is in a class to it. But of more importance from the standpoint of pleasure was the need to train and develop her, after so many years of heart breaking toll and work, were at the success on that night. Those who have been familiar with the program of Negro education, among the past few years are familiar with the struggles of that man and his wife, and the continuance of the wife, for it is well known that her abilities in large medical continuance of the efforts of her husband when things looked bad for her, have done year after year and and sacrificed as they have, to have hoped against hope as they have done year after year and the dream of their lives should also pleasure to all who know of And aude from that, in their success there is proof of the fact that man, in spite of color, in spite of race, in spite of background and disappointment, can succeed if there is but in them an ambition that refuses to be quenched. The completion of that theatre is a distinct addition to the city in point of amusement. But It is also the completion of the race to sum the total of its accomplishments. It is another reason for the increase of pride of Negro everywhere in the ability of the race to perform that act. It is also the reason that pride should make itself felt in the sort of attendance that playhouses which will mean in future months and years. This should be particularly borne in mind at this time by the masses of Texas Negro voters who, because they are not satisfied with the actions of those who are now at the head of the Republican Party in this state are being urged to vote for the Democratic ticket in the gubernatorial elections. The fact that the decree of the Texas court in this case affirms the right of the party to bar the Negro voter from its primaries in which all of its candidates are chosen means that it bars the Negro from real participation in the government; it bars the Negro from real participation in the government; it bars the Negro from that there will be no time in the near future when Negro voters will come into such a position as to be able to do anything other than vote blindly, powerlessly for some candidate whom they have had no hand in choosing. There will be no time when the race can be represented in any such way as to the Republican party in this state and other Southern states. There must come in the life of the race in Dallas when those who will be found identified with every movement for their prose. This is not now the case. This is not the case in Dallas, in fall within the street prose of certain classes of leaders, in the street prose of certain moral for them, but they rather are stubbornly tough. Such a class would benefit if bingo programs. In the Republican party, until a few years ago, the condition was just reversed. One has only to go back to the days of Cuney and others to realize how great is the difference in the policy of the two. Though in later days there has seemed to be a change in the policy of the Republican party in that regard, it must be borne in mind that that --- THE DALLAS EXPRESS, DALLAS, TEXAS, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1924 COL. MIDNIGHT'S WEEKLY LETTER. ```markdown ``` change has been made possible by the failure of McDonald and those who followed him in the unfortunate bolt from the party in the San Antonio convention. It does not mean however that the door of opportunity to come again into a place of power in the party has been closed so tightly as the same door in the Democratic Party has always been. Common sense will reopen it. Organization and the sense and courage to fight with a deep-prooted desire to win a way to govern the days of political participation in Texas for the Negro. The Democratic party has always been the enemy of the Negro voter. It has invoked the power of courts and lawmaking bodies to make firm its decrees. Such has not yet been the rule of the Republican party in regard to the Negro, and there is no reason to feel that it will be the case soon. This decision of the Supreme Court was not altogether unexpected. Therefore it is not particularly discouraging. But as another example of the sort of desire that that party has for the support of the Negro in Texas it is particularly valuable. And so no Negro feel himself. The Democratic party in Texas like the Democratic party all over the South has the "No Admittance" sign forever turned in the face of the Negro voter. That much is certain. BRO. RICHARDSON SAYS "PARVUM IN MULTO" O Our very loyacious fellow editor C. F. Richardson of the Houston informer in his distribute of last week under caption of "The Informer is still from Missouri!" takes a column and a half of double column space to tell to the world something that the Express editor has not yet been able to discover. It is very seldom that the Express feels that there is propriety in the use of dead languages, but the length of the supposed reasoning of "Brother" Richardson and the small bit of real logic contained in it makes the heading of a poem peculiarly fitting. Richardson uses the Latin idiom "meaning" much in little but in the case of Editor Richardson's editorial The Express sees "little sense in much argument." So far it has not been made at all clear to the general public by Editor Richardson whether he would advice the Negro voters of Texas to vote the Democratic ticket or simply not to vote the Republican ticket. Not only does he seem to be "from Missouri" as he declares but he seems in no way to be "from Texas" as he declares and he gets down. He declares in one breath that he will not support the Republican candidate in the coming election and in the next breath he declares that he does not say that he favors the support of the Democratic candidate. What then does he argue about. Or, we should have asked, "Why does he argue?" For what candidate is he if he favors neither the Republican nor the Democratic candidate? He does not without taking into account the continued peculiar reasoning ability of "The Good Editor" with regard to the propriety of the voting of the Republican ticket by the Negroes of Texas. He goes on in his argument to quote the late President Harding's Birmingham speech in which he declared that "I do not want the Colored parties to be entirely of one party" and that "I do not want the Negroes to be in Texas now as far as the two major parties are concerned. At least that is what The Express is forced to think since the good Houston editor does not mention any other party. It would not do the late Chief Executive of our country credit to think that he meant the support by Negroes of any party in which they did not have the right to help in the those elections." And he declares that as conditions now are. And there is not any reason now to measure that these conditions will change soon. The Express would ask "Brother Richardson" what good would the support of the Democratic nominee for governor would do the Negro voters of Texas. It is understood that that support could be given only in the general election and this a well known fact that in Texas the choice of a candidate by the Democratic Party is equivalent to election; or at least has been for more years than we care to remember. The party cannot go into any of the party councils and never have had that power. How then, would their support be worth anything to them beside the bare satisfaction of having voted for some candidate that was not favorable to the Republicans. That, the Express thinks, is poor consolation indeed. In fact, such a course would be even more indicative of poor judgment than the action of those Negro leaders who a few years ago, willingly walked out of the state Republican convention and gave to the lily white leaders the power to govern and to have power to control of the party in Texas and eliminate them from active participation in it. Let's not continue to be foolish "Brother Richardson." It is high time that the Negroes of Texas begin to apply the acid test of reason to their political affairs as well as to many of their other activities. Let brain rather than sentience be the basis of the Negroes in Texas KNOWS THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE PARTY IN WHICH THERE IS OPPORTUNITY FOR ACTIVE PARTICIPATION OF THE NEGRO. THAT PARTY IS THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. WHETHER THE PRESENT MANAGEMENT IS TO HIS LIKING OR TO HIS LOVING, THAT WAY IS TO GO INTO EVERY PRECINCT AND COUNTY AND STATE CONTENT AND OUT VOTE THE LILY WHITES AND AGAIN COME INTO THE PLACE OF POWER that WAS LOST by the FOOLISH LEADERSHIP OF THOSE WHOSE JUDGMENT WE TRUSTED FOR SO MANY YEARS. Cutting off noses to spite faces may be all right for children but it is not becoming may be all right for adults. And to value properly the circumstances which surround them. There is not now, and there never has been any occasion for the decision of the Negro in Texas to vote the Democratic ticket in any election. He cannot choose for whom he will vote. And of that party is given the absolute opportunity to vote at all. The EXPRESS STANDS BY THE MOTTO AT ITS MAST HEAD. THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS THE SHEAR; ALL ELSE IS THE SEA. COL. J. O. MIDNIGHT UGEN NEGRO VOICE TO STAY B E G. O. P. TEXARKA, ARKANSAS — want to give every man the right to think, and the world is calling on him to think, who think and there are others who just think the thoughts of others and I never want to be guilty of lying to say just who thinks and I never want to be guilty of when I see men going wrong and so wrong. it makes me feel like doing things that were never quarterly, yet I just to remain from saying them and so right on the ground, yet I am going to do here in Arkansas. You must not ask me what I think, for it is not your bud. THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY CASE It gives small consolation to those who have been arguing that the Negroes in Texas should support the Democratic candidate in the nominal election to know that that party, in spite of what may be said to the contrary, still will continue to bar Negroes from its party councils and forbid them to participate in its choice of its candidates. We are sure that it should give them small pleasure whether it does or not. And, though it is never profitable to be placed in the position of one who says "I told you so" the temptation is almost unbeatable at this time. The Democratic Party is democratic in name only. It has been, since the days of slavery, a party composed of the worst enemies in a political way which the Negro has in America. And the presumption is possible at this time that it will continue so to be. There is not now any well formed reason to suppose that its policy in that regard will change. From the standpoint of pure Americanism that situation is extremely unfortunate for the reason that it makes all of us poorer of class rather than popular making. It would make it easier for people the governing power over the masses which of course is not according to the generally accepted idea of American procedure. I want to appeal to the thinking class of my people, to do what I want, to do it in five weeks, and do not be led by oratory, for it is going to flirt and fasten that which we are going to stop and think! before election day, and you will see that we will be cooler-Dove-Davis a Pollette, but into the box every time will go to our cookie-dove-Barney. I am told that there is no north and no south, but we are all one south and one north, and to voting you will find a cold south for democratic party. This is what life, Davies has to start But since this is a fact and not a theory, there should be nothing else in the minds of those who are so openly opposed by this party, than the desire to give their best efforts in order to guarantee as far as they are able, the fallback would be possible. To do otherwise would be to work against that which is recognized to be a human fundamental. THE MIRROR PUBLIC OPINION A. Sweeney, and a host of others now gone to their reward, laid a foundation for helping Negroes preserve their own souls which they never realized, and their ones carrying on the other work well. While in Chicago a few days, I decided to visit all the headquarters and just see how we had headquarters all of us had of headquarters all of us had to the Wrigley Building Ground Committee, and for us you would have found on the fourth floor in Wrigley Building a reception room for our guests C. Next found me enroute to Collovery where I met the Baptist State Combination of Kansas, a two-member convention in presided over by the graduate from Simmons University, Browneville, Ky., and pastor of the First Baptist Church, Kansas City, Kan., who was a leader and a leader of men.
