LONDON, ENGLAND, Dec. 27—In an interview here recently, I spoke with the author who carved out Rhodeia, Uganda and Nyanja for Great Britain during the 1990s. I corresponded for the Chicago Daily News that he violated a vast international treaty that is part in the balance of world power. In the coming clash of color and power, the United States in Africa will be imperiled and the heart of the dark continent will be threatened.
"I don't expect to do a blast in the air," he said. "I'll be the one who is #6. "However it is entirely possible that within half a century the Great Sahara may be one great island."

Correspondence From Washington Indicates That Chief Executive Intends to Stop Reign of Disfranchisement in Southern States Where Race is Denied Ballot
WASHINGTON, D. C., Dec. 22—Washington is celebrating Christmas, and that means that politics are not the only subject after the advent of 1925. It does not mean that there are not, here, more important issues to consider this expression: "Well, lets go into this more fully after the first half of the year, and it must be. Then, wonders the fur fly, here is the low down on some of the inside talk about the White House, the press priced opinion that the racial新闻 fully grasp the significance of that portion of the President's register, registering and voting during Federal elections all over the country, just means that, no more and no less, Administration men as the most significant governmental body of political rights for many years. MAKING CHRISTMAS REAL CELEBRATION
R. AND MRS. BROWN agreed not to have any Christmas cei-
not to have any Christmas celebration. They would just be have and have a restful holiday without it, and they would go out to each other and their friends in the exchange of gifts. Their friends had conceived not to give gifts to Mrs. Brown, and as they had no children, it would be easy to carry out their intention of having just an ordinary holiday. They married and Mrs. Brown looked at Mrs. Brown through blinking eyes. "Merry Christmas," he said. "Merry Christmas," he married his wife. They were both started. That was not the way to begin an ordinary holiday. They had begun it just as they were going to do. "But then," Mrs. Brown explained, "it wouldn't be right not to say it, would it, be it. We agreed with her, and they went down to breakfast. At Mr. Brown's place were some packages. Are those?" he asked, with pretended harshness.
"Oh, desirie!" said his wife, "you won't be angry, will you? I just. I won't be angry, will you? I wouldn't be Christmas without some surprises. And as we weren't giving any presents, I thought it was a good opportunity to get you some things to give to your family. Mr. Brown tore out the packages, which to his great delight contained a velvet lounging robe, some Russian perfume, and a box of his favorite cigars. "You dear!" he cried, and kissed his wife ardently. "I'll be from his pocket, a small box which he handed her. Her eyes sparkled."
"For me?" she exclaimed.
"For you," he said, and added, as she lifted from the box a beautiful necklace of pearls. "I thought since this year, it was a good opportunity to buy you these pearls you have wanted so long." You dear," said his wife, and kissed him joyfully. Just then the doorbell rang. A messenger with flowers and candy was at the door. "I thought it wouldn't be Christmas without these," said Mr. Brown. "And you were right, agreed his wife. "You can't have Christmas with candy and flowers, and preserve it." "And you really people really love you."-II. Luctus Cook. (© 1914, Western Newbern Union.)

It was as if Hunker had been known as the "Stony Face." "Front," "Bloodless," and like. The many solicitors of charity went to him without expecting each Christmas mysterious turkeys were left at doors whose owners were not expecting to have any. Lords of wood and tins of coal appeared in the doorsteps of the house, could have told something about them. Only one person in town really understood, and that was Andy Searle, a friend of the banker called him into his back room. "Here is a thousand dollars, Andy," he began, nodding at a roll on the pocket of his pocket and distribute it where you feel it will make the most Christmas."

CHRISTMAS GIFTS
THAT ARE WELCOME
THE builders are a time when most of us would like to make one dollar do the work of five, and which shows how thoughtfulness can make a cheap gift acceptable. Therefore I give a few much instances from my own experience: I give her a jumbo jumble is who is famous for her jumbo jumble, and another whose mille pleces are a toothache delight. These two women remember their specialties, and I assure you, no present is received more gratefully than in theirs. Still another, who makes orange marmalade by a woman who is a confectioner this confection is from her favored circle. But—a word of warring: Be absolutely sure that such an offering is intended for her. I remember one woman, on a strict diet, to whom all sweets are forbidden, whose careless acquaintances are constantly sending boxes of candy, and who last year, received a glass of
wild strawberry jam. deliciate to all those who could eat it, but, it happened, she could not. However, such people who could eat it, but cared for celeriousness, and need not occur.
A shut-in once expiated to me upon the solid help afforded her by a Christmas present of a "mutiny basket" she was ever wanting, and could not readily procure for herself—pins, needles, tape, balls and sockets, throats and salads and cushions. "Everything is happy, as a child," I find something new that I need. It was not an expensive offering, and yet it was one I would happily accept. Akin to it was a little silk sewing-ing, also naturally received because the maker had informed herself of what the recipient's wardrobe would be that she would need, and needle-ace, spools of colored丝 matching each garment to be worn that winter. Here again the thoughtfulness—not the gift itself—is what
A case of threaded needles is most acceptable to all women beyond middle age whose eyes are beginning to age. Other discriminating presents are packers of choice seeds, saved during the summer, and sent to an amateur gardener at Christmas time. A mummaness of tested recipes, compiled by the sender, is another always welcome offering. With pleasure, acutimal, retrospective and antipathy, theirs, adjourners in a far western home, who, just before the holidays, opened a box from mother and sisters for Christmas. OUR HEART-RADIOS ON CHRISTMAS EVE
OD owns the biggest broadcasting station in the universe, and what he needs for forthcoming broadcasts is love. Every human being has a radio—a heart-radio. If we are in a fair way of becoming good receiving stations. And a good receiver may hear harmonies that will vibrate through us. At Christmas time we should have heart-radios in perfect condition that we may know the angels manifests itself in kindness, friendliness, happiness and good cheer. In 't's, friends, and who knows but we may hear the angels singing on the Broadway Theatre, 1914, Western Newspaper Union.

CHRISTMAS GIVING AND ITS MEANING
IVE me sit." the woman said as she crowded her way rudely up to the handkerchief counter. "One has to buy something, I suppose, and I guess handkerchiefs take the least thought and consider "Any particular pattern?" the clerk inquired.
"It's a very sweet, happy time to me," the girl answered.
There is too much that is conventionally Christmas giving. We burden ourselves with obligations which we should never assume. We give we give too often because we feel that we should will say if we do not, because we hope to receive something in return. We keep up the practice because we have not the courage or the diplomacy to personalize little thought or personality into it.
"Please do not send me anything at Christmas time," a friend wrote me, "for by doing you would embarrass you which I can ill afford to meet." It was a sensible letter which few would have had the courage to write.
It is not what we give that really matters, even when the giving is done. The friendly, personal letter, the trifle which we have ourselves made, even the card which we pick up at the book store, often brings us chosen without love or thought. Christmas is a time of kindly thoughts, of forgiveness, of charity, and of good will to all men. There is no other reason to be so dreary to be away from home.

HEY all adored the mantelpiece—the many Christmas cards. How gay they were. How handsome way of making the room cheery and decorated for Christmas. Each one did its part to add. Many of these cards had almost nothing. So many of the senders had said. I don't believe I'll send them a card this Christmas. We never see them any more." But then they added—"SHI they are friends and it was the Christmas wish." So all the cards had come. And not one of them was in the way. Not one of them but that Graham Bonner.—mary Graham Bonner

It Was Christmas Eve—
THE deep hush of night had fallen over the land and up above thousands of stars twinkled, seeming a shining a little brighter than on the ground, with every window candles and lighted trees trees sent their shining rays out into the darkness, symbols of hope and joy that be born again next morning. Everywhere the split of the season made itself felt and men and women were in a state of peace and good will. Everybody seemed to be working feverishly to make happiness for others, most of them being women, but not that was coming on the morrow even as one of them? In every heart there was added condensation and love; in every home there was no hat that was coming on the morrow even as one of them? In every heart there was added condensation and love; in every home there was no hat that was coming on the morrow even as one of them? In every heart there was repeated itself in the hearts of men and women everywhere—Katharina Biedermann.

THE "SANTA SACK"
GAME FOR KIDDIES
ANTA CLAUS is a real problem to some mothers. Shall their children be told the truth about Santa Claus as he sliding into the chimney with retender and sleight? This idea may help some mother who is puzzled over this question. Little folks were old enough to understand about the existence of Santa Claus, whenever we saw a picture of the jolly old man, Santa Claus, because he looked happy. And he looked happy because he was good and kind to everyone. So when the teacher tries to have them smile and look joyful, like Santa, whose picture we had among others we referred to, as moral or myth picture. We grew to understand more fully the meaning of the Christ-masteus we played a game, "Santa sack," which meant that it if meant that we should play to play with their toys or give them of their apples or cookies, they were playing Santa Claus, because Santa Claus was unsealed and divided what
Sometimes when their playmates came, we would say, "Touw want to play *Santa Sack*, and away they would play *Santa Sack*.* Santa delighted to play and be called Santa when they run errands, smiled or did something kind. Santa was a make-believe creature, and read to them, such as "The Baggygog Man," "Children's Hair," "Jack Spat," "Hiwatna." Anyone who gave a gift at any time of year was invited to play Santa as they distributed gifts at school or at any public place, they were delighted that someone was playing Santa as they lived in the home with their little friends. For anyone who is unselfish, kind and cheerful to it there is Santa Claus to someone else. We older the Santa sack was woven into a lesson story with the thought that each of us has something in smile, words and kinds to give to another all the time. For Santa Claus, many children had from his sack of treasures in Bethlehem long ago! So Santa Claus means unselfless, cheerful, kindness—many things that are worth our children— Garrick Walten. © 1924, Walt Disney Univ.

CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
MAKES CHRISTMAS
**WAS** Christmas morning; the ground was covered with snow, it was early morning, and real Christmas. It was early morning and the Gaylord household was asir.
"Now, not a single package on that troop until I get the turkey in the mail."
This from the busy Mother Gaylord as she hurriedly pulled into the alley to get the turkey one more spoon of dressing.
"All right, old dear," saddened Hugh, the oldest of the three sons—a tree, a horse, a gift a gift without you.
"Thank you, son," said mother as she dried her hands and joined the tree. "nor a gift without you."
All this joy with us—but business first. That largest package is from him. His letter said possibly he couldn't handle the package, but let's save the tree until he does come, and not touch a package, for a tree is not a tree nor a gift. A familiar step was heard; the rang and in stepped Dad, shouting "Merry Christmas to all! My pack is done get here!" Beel jay! Gel jay! I'm just in time.
Four voices in unison: "How did you get here?" "Blow in!" did
"Well, I guess I did. Christians couldn't be Christmas without you, so I came by airplane. Golly! I am a mime! I am good! let me open our package."
The tree was truly a tree; the packages were sure-enough gifts; the curry and the count-of-poodles turkey, and the Christmas tree, the whole family was assembled with true love in their hearts for each other and Christ in the midst. —B. (B. 1924, Western Newspaper Union.)

Wind Robs Man of
Three $100 Bills
San Francisco.—The mischievous wind that sprang up recently to swoop down on Market Street, the flappers cost William Wilson of No. 1145 Howard street $300. As Wilson was taking out his wallet to buy a Sunday paper the rapacious, predatory saphyre flashed them down the street. Wilson leaped to catch his flying money, but the gust carried them around a corner and, although searching the streets, added by a good-sized crowd, he was unable to recover the bills.

Parrish Street is in Durham North Carolina. It is the street on which are located more than $50,000,000 worth of Negro business houses. It was in this town and on this street that the recent formal launching of the million dollar Negro finance corporation was held. Pew black men in America, belonging to the masses know of the existence of such a street. Few in fact, know that there are in any city, a group of Negro business houses which represent so many. It was only recently that the United States started discussion launched in a group of fairly intelligent men as to whether there were any Negro millionaires or not.

While there is probably not another street in America which is as distinguished as is Parvish Street by the amount of Negro capital centered on it, there are many which houses Negro business houses in fact that in the past twenty-five years the capitalization of Negro business houses has increased by many fold and the number has been raised from 20,000 to 65,000, while the aggregate wealth has increased from $100,000 to $1,500,000. The knowledge of the Negro in the ways of doing business is rapidly increasing. The end is not yet.

It will happen that in time there will be more such spots as Parrish Street now is. It may continue to lead in the amount of capital centrifuge we have, but the growth will not be enough to warrant the fullest extent. This will happen only as those who conduct business enterprises strive to take them out of the "one man" class and make them nation wide in their service, and as the members of the general public see to it that they do their bit toward making these businesses thrive and grow by reason of

Six millions of dollars were given for the advancement of Negro education during the past week by white philanthropists. The three schools to benefit from these gifts were Hampton Institute, Tuskegee Institute and Johnson C. Smith College (formerly Biddle University). The donors were George Washington University, which which name, James B. Duke, the famous tombstone magnate. Colored education shared in a total of more than seventy millions dollars given for helpful purposes by the two men.
Hampton and Tuskegee shared the largest amount. Mr. Eastman added a million dollars to the endowment fund of each school in the form of a gift of stock of the Eastman Kodak Company. This stock was figured at a value of $50 million. The stock is now listed at 111 a share.
W. R. KING
Johnson C. Smith University of Charlotte, N. C., was made the beneficiary of four per cent of a trust fund of $40,000,000 created by Mr. Duke. This four per cent will amount to $1,600,000, making an endowment fund which is almost twice as large as that recently obtained by Fisk University.
THE TRUE XMAS SPIRIT
At this time there is naturally a reversal of feeling to correspond with the season. Gifts are given, hearts are opened and eyes are pierced to permeate the very air. Why? It is in accordance with the custom which was instituted at the birth of the Son of God, the Christ Child, whose course is to look on life; a knowledge that there was hope for the most perverted and pardon for the vile sinner alive. It was the birth of the Son of God, who is responsible for all of the things which in this world, we call good.
Gifts like this insure the increased ability of the Negro to take his rightful place in the scheme of production of the country. They represent as much in this day as did the efforts of those of a former day who founded the schools for the training of the freedmen. We rejoice at these most recent gifts for education. Their worth is inestimable.
News dispatches state that the discrimination in the departments at the Capitol will be done away with in the administration of Coolidge. If true it is welcome news. Its institution, while only to be expected of a Democritic regime, was the most flagrant flouting of the principles of Democracy which this country has ever witnessed. That in the place of operation of the government itself there should have been placed wail and separate treatment of different groups. It is not the case as that there should be blasphemy on display in churches. If Coolidge does no other thing than put the stamp of disapproval on this practice, he will have made a contribution to the practice of democracy in government which is sorely needed. And in this connection, it may be stated the members of the race should make it known in unimissible form and expect this to be done. They have the power now to make themselves heard and they should do it.
The true spirit of Christianity shows itself in the sort of actions that are so often associated with good things, which love sprout from that Priceless gift of God to man. And, consider it as we may, there can be no proof of the love of God, but the devotion of love for all mankind. The Christmas gift is one of love and holiness, just as the Christmas gift is one of love and joy. It was an expansion of the love of God for mankind. From this same gift alluring of the things which exist among men today, which are given to the world by the Father, of the gift of His Son. That love is the reason for the progress of culture and philanthropy; it is the inciting force behind every love for less or less love for human beings.
PERMANENT ORGANIZATION FOR NEGRO
REPUBLICANS
There is every reason to feel that the removal of the office of the Negro branch of the Republican National Committee from Chicago to Washington, is a sign of a sort of recognition of Negro political leadership which has not been before seen, but which is highly pleasing. It means that the party as a whole has recognized the ability of the Negro to participate in the game with a different sort of spirit that has been hereof seen.
As the season approaches there should be, in the heart of every child, a celebration of all of his talents to the task of bringing the whole mankind closer to a realization of the love which is the base of the education, and a nearer approach to the everyday exercise of that love in the spirit of Xmas has its place in the life of every person every day. The joy of the day it is restricted to the bare observation of the one day. Those who name it fully satisfy day in day the true spirit of love. As the season approaches, let some such realization come to life of all of us who have "Merry Xmas" have behind it a love of all man who can be an object of love. Friends who receive the gifts which are marks of special welcome.
The spirit of Xinna has its place in leadership and the argues for a more careful consideration of the things that things happen to day. It cannot be fully sensed if day cannot be believed to be the part of political value of the one day. These who sense it fully strive every day in every way to show their possession to the appointed one through whom all of the needs of the world are served. As the season approaches, let the spirit of Xinna be always lost in his attempts at personal improvement.

We feel that the creation of this office is also a splen-

puts upon his shoulders an unusual amount of responsibility,
at the same time, gives him opportunity to use further
splendid qualities of leadership which he so well demonstrat-

A MONUMENT TO OUR BOYS AS WELL
A news dispatch of a few days ago told of the unwelling in the near future of a monument to the late Theodore Roosevelt at Santiago to commemorate the service of that great soldier in the Spanish American War. Even the bare bones of the story are not clear. The gallant services of the Negro soldiers in that battle and victory. In fact, there has never been a battle field nor a war in which Negro soldiers participated that is better known or more widely heralded than that field and San Juan.
Who can remember when at Xmas time cannibals crackers and pies and shot-guns made more of them? The town combined? These were the days of real damnages which the police had taken. Thank Fate they are gone forever.
a glory that time will only make more glorious. In the unveiling of that monument to Theodore Rosevelt, soldier and American gentleman without a peer in recent years, a monument to Negro soldiers will also be uncovered. For it is impossible to think of the one in connection with that great struggle without thought of the other. The glory of great generosity is the glory of heroes of that conflict. That at least is one of the facts in history involving Negroes that has not been forever lost.
The time has come when those who would serve me need be well trained for it. A matriarch without any tools, should not grumble because he gets no work to do. To belong to the Neurotic alone is not sufficient reason for being hired by one of the race to do a place of work. Fitness conditions and that includes everything.

Parrish Street where there is $50,000,000 worth of Negro business! In the heart of the South where prejudice is most pronounced! It is a fair sample of what can be achieved by the efforts of the community to attempt to make realizations of their visions. The progress of the business houses of the street should serve as a spur to the ambitions of those in other sections. The feat of the promoters of Parrish Street can be duplicated. It can help to increase the number of Negro streets of Negro business, there is food for much thought.

Miss Eyes was reminded very forcefully that Xmas was near at hand when a certain employee in a big business concern thought he was going to give away a tree. He happens to be a favorite however, so all's well.

Miss Eyes would advise that guy to talk for himself and leave out the other fellow's business like a sausage meat or like a sausage meat another holiday.
Miss Eyes is somewhat surprised at a certain little matron. I remember him waving a fun hat. The bridge that carried you over, seems by this time you would be used to good living, never let such turn your head, remember that you were a little wanderer. Miss Eyes was present when a certain popular matron was simply "casting stones" and you of all people. Don't you remember the old "adobe" in glass houses that you don't have to go to your closet to find the skeleton, he is walking around in the front room. Don't take it so hard young lady, he doesn't mean quite to you Christmas, he thought quitting was easier than buying a Christmas present.
