Mrs. Will Williams entertained the Home Mission Sisters of Nmyrna Baptist church last Friday. The literary program rendered Friday night was an excellent one. The public school students rendered the program at Wallace Chapel in honor of the anniversary of Rev. Brown as pastor of that church. Services on Sunday was a continuation of his anniversary service which began on Thursday night. Rev. Frenley pastor of LittleBig Christ Church was prayed to the anniversary Sunday at its o'clock. Those parents and - friends of education who have been wondering just what to do in seeing to it that their children will reach their highest degree of efficiency now have opportunity to perform a service which means much in dollars and cents to the school system. The school census is being taken in which every child of school age in the city should be registered, the child of school age in seven and fifteen should have his name listed on the school roll, whether the child is in school or in the city of Dallas by the city of Dallas by the state are made on the basis of the number of children of school age listed. For every child of school age not in school, the city of Dallas loses $16 in appropriation. This fact evidently has not been fully realized by the members of our race in Dallas during the past year. We have seen that instead of an increase in the number of children of school age listed in the city, there has been a decrease in the number necessary for the Superintendent of schools to make a personal visit to the schools and re-check the records. All of them he reg- The eleventh National Negro Health Week has been announced by the head of Tuskegee Institute in accordance with the annual custom. So far it has happened that each observance of this week has been attended with greater success than any former one. This year's observance must keep pace. This week, more than any other observed by the race has brought returns which prove the wisdom of its observance as widely as possible. As long as the race has high death rate from preventable disease as it has, this week will be needed. As long as tuberculosis makes the savages among us which it does, it will be necessary to try particular stress on the greater observance of the common rules of health which until a few years ago were not widely known, to us, much still several weeks off, it be time for the completion of the arrangements which will guarantee to the observance of this week's success which will be greater than it has ever been. ```markdown ``` CANNIBALS VS. LYNCHERS From 'Bordeaux, France comes a dispatch to the effect that "Six Negro Cannibals, among whom was a man 60 years old and a woman 70 years old," were executed at Victoria, French Guinea. The cannibals were convicted of killing and eating eleven persons. They faced the firing squad bravely. Thinking of African cannibals naturally causes thought of other man-killers nearly in that class; lynchers because they are closer home, seem most nearly to fit that bill, but in comparing the two we are rather prone to feel that the cannibals get the best of the deal. First, both of them are killers of other men; the African for food; the American lyncher for sport. For proof of this fact read any account of a lynching paying special attention to the actions of those brave men who unsee their victims, disembowel them, back off ears, lips, etc., and save these ghastly parts of human bodies for souvenirs, relics to be handed down to succeeding generations. Lynchera have back of them, hundreds of years of civilization and dozens of generations of Nordic ancestors; African cannibals have not been so fortunate. They are indigenous to their jungles and the tradition which they hold allows for the eating of "long pig" as well as other flesh. And lastly, the African cannibals "faced the firing sound bravely." Why not? They were facing death for a long time, and they were not afraid of the sciences were clear. They could face death calmly for the eating of "long pig" had never involved any moral consequences. But what of the lyncher when faced with the payment with his life, which according to the laws, of our land is justly forfeit? Unfortunately, we cannot corroborate that the public sentiment in regard to lynching has not become definite to the extent that that of the French has in regard to the eating of the victims killed. Our lynchers who kill, not for food but often for mere sport, and who main human beings for the acquiring of such grisly, gruesome trophies, as cowries, ears, cars, etc., go unpunished in a civilized land of those whose greatest boast is that to be Norvegian is to be superior. We believe us, this comparison came into mind unbidden and though in its expression, it is, nevertheless fair in its reasoning, we think. Frenchmen will eventually stamp out cannibalism in French Guinea, even though it means that they have been so much more likely to be fully sense the thing which is being done for them. On the theory that civilization is progress and that it evidences itself in consideration for human beings beyond the point of doing them to death for food or sport, what a pity it is that some such force as the French influence in America in which two Negroes were lynched last week and no arrests have been made in connection with them. PUTTING THE HORSE BEFORE THE CART The statement of Mr. C. C. Spaulding, president of the North Carolina Mutual Insurance Company, to the effect that The National Negro Finance Corporation would be able to begin operations as soon as he returned to Durham or very shortly thereafter, will fail pleasingly on the ears of those who have favorably, considered the project of forming such a corporation. "Putting the horse before the cart in Negro business" is the way in which Mr. Spaulding describes the service which it will render by serving as a centralizing point from which our financial surplus will radiate, giving strength and increased safety to the investments of members of the race in worth while concerns. It is easy immediately to visualize one outstanding way in which this corporation can serve the race. And the speed of this conviction is made possible by our near-identical approach to the privatized financial institutions. The service most easy to see is the opportunity of stabilizing the securities of of worth while concerns and of operating as a credit reservoir from which prompt assistance, commensurate with good business, may be obtained for them. It is easy to see that had such assistance been obtained, the race it operated not sentimentally, but rather in accordance with the rules laid down for safe procedure in reaping a regular 6-8 and 10 per cent harvest, the failure of the concerns of the race which have lacked standing and credit, might have been avoided. "The Corporation is launched. Soon it will begin to operate; and its successful promotion is due in no small way to the confidence of Negro investors the country over, in the hope of gaining its associates, one of the favorite maxims of Mr. Spalding. Soon to others is the rent which we pay for the space which we occupy in this world." Evidently he has lived according to the combine heDurant interests with the Tuskegee Institute of National Finance Corporation, thus putting "the horse before the cart," the has rendered a service, the size of which will be fully realized, and come when the race has found itself fully in a financial world. H. D. Winn, grandmaster of The Free and Accepted Masons of Texas, is dead. His passing marks the end of a life of service of another of the fraternal pioneers who taught to the race in this state, the lesson of cooperative effort. That his life was spent in the service of his people is proven by his early death. Sickness brought on by long hours of exposure and poor travelling accommodations on railroads on which a large part of his time was spent, is responsible for his removal from the field of service just at the age of 81, when his ripe experience and maturer years would have meant him only to the order which he served, but to the other fields of his sideneria which were widespread. He follows an ever increasing number of those who have wrought well for the state of Texas but who are passing to their final reward after years of earnest endowment and who will come after them to do as well with the improved condition, as the result of the service of such men as he. It is for them to carry on to still greater success the work in which they rendered such acceptable pioneer service. And to these men, it will come to some a situation of the extent to which they are rewarded for their improved conditions, that they will make earnest efforts to see if that the unfavorable circumstances under which their predecessors labored are removed in order that their servants be rewarded in an which to be enjoyed. Travel for Negroes must be improvised in the records of such as H. D. Wint must find a larger place in the affairs which they have done so much to perpetuate, otherwise, they will have lived in vain and the struggles which render the contemplation of their lives pleasant and satisfying will have been of the race who need added ambition to achieve, will have been undergone for naught.
