"In spite of the reverses which the business concerns of the race have suffered, we still have the strength to hold out and the courage to carry on." These words from the lips of a representative of a large Negro concern with a national scope, strike The Express as being well worth the serious consideration of all of those who are tempted to harp at the note of persistence in this connection in this connection the slogan of one of the fighting units of the late war comes to mind. It had been almost wiped out by a recent disastrous engagement. Its officers had been killed but the spirit of its men remained to such an extent that all of its members united in the ratchet of their arms were marred, NO! "And so it must be with Negroes everywhere." This one thing must be realized: that in spite of all sorts of reverses, we must succeed. The future of the children of the race in an economic way is bound up in the success of our business ventures. I hope to be the larger of the two, but the larger of the power or good which is so much to be desired. If colossal concerns which involve finances of the larger sort are not maintained, we may as well admit that the future status of all of us will be only that of "hewers of wood and drawers of wood" and that of the class of persons in the countries of the world, it is unthinkable that we would content with that place only. Another thing must be realized. We have not had enough failures yet to discourage us for the reason that we have not as we as you the courage to begin enough ventures of business. We have not had enough failures and no more is it true that a few attempts at conducting business of the larger sort give any idea of our capacities in that regard. So far in our racl life, we have not posed any questions about the creation of business purely for the love of it nor for the creation of large reserves for the future. Such concerns as have been established have for a large part been of necessity and their conduct has been, not so much along the lines of the meteoric that time must pass. The spirit of wanting business enterprises for the reason that they will add to our financial strength and will must prevail. We must learn to want, not because another has and will want to institute business enterprises, but because men who conduct these concerns must catch the vision of large service which, such concerns make possible and strive to live up to that vision, seeking little in the way of personal popularity but rather, the best in life for all of those con- The possibilities of the race in an economic way have not yet been scratched. They have not yet been seen by enough men to cause any ready definite attempt to be made to change the way we do business, anything in our business ventures, comparatively speaking, because we have not yet sacrificed anything for them. Without the strength to hold out and the courage to carry on now, we would convict ourselves of being lacking in the essential skills and abilities that we must gain precedence that a thousand failures are not sufficient to discourage those who have firmly committed themselves to any program of real improvement. This is no time to sing the business "saw song." It is rather time to sing the business "saw song." It is rather time for the realization of the splendid future which awaits us. WORTH WHILE OBJECTIVES The State Association of Colored Teachers of Texas has instituted a membership drive in which it hopes to enroll 200 teachers by the time for the annual meet, which is to be held in Dallas this year. Increased membership will help the State Association realize that it should be realized. Were it only for the contact, every one of the more than 5000 teachers in Texas could well afford to become a member of this organization. But the contemplation of the program of the association should form an important part of the president's role. The president of the association has made public the main objectives of the body which summed up, seem to cover the following things: a state university, more modern equipment and longer terms for rural schools, higher standards for teachers, more parent-Teacher Associations in connection with the schools, and closer cooperation of the state association with the national body of teachers. All of these things are to be consistently worked for by the association. The State Association is in the slogan of the association which is "The Best in Education for every Negro Child." There can be little argument as to the crying need for the sort of improvements which this association seeks for the teachers. The State Association is hesitancy on the part of the teachers concerned in joining heartily with the association in bringing this improved condition into being. It is to be hoped that all of the teachers of Texas will do their share in bringing this program into being. It is to be better of doing this than by responding to the call to the State Association for members to enroll before the November meeting. There is no more embarrassing thing which Negro Texans face than the poor accommodations on railroads. Dirty conches, a single toilet for men and women, two of the all too few seats in the Jim Grow half coach taken by conductor John McCarthy, and the poor accommodations in Texas almost unbeatable. From time to time there have been rumors of some sort of action that a group of our leaders in church and fraternal circles was going to take, but so far, that action has not materialized. They have failed to deliver. They have been far behind similar leaders in other states who have made it possible, not only for Negroes to have a whole clean coach, but have by their continued agitation, made it possible for members of the race to secure sleeping accommodations for night travel. And they have done this by collecting the facts to - show the bodies which they control and have used those facts as bodies with which to pity better accommodations from railroads. The general public in Texas is getting rather tired of the continued talk of its fraternal leaders about this thing, without seeing any action taken in regard to it. It begins to look as if they lack the backbone necessary to tackle the issue. The general public in Texas is not other grand lodge and convention season is now upon us. Thousands of dollars will be spent by the accommodations when they could be bettered. It is unnecessary. Its continuance brands the heads of these organizations as lacking somewhat in the ability to provide efficiently for their needs. The general public in Texas opposes these leaders for some more definite action than has characterized them in the past in regard to this situation. The amount of money spent by Negroes on Texas railroads warrants a different sort of accommodation than they now receive. The Express believes that they can be had and it is in this belief until the contrary has been proven by the failure of the general public to move for a provement. It is the move of the fraternal church leader. Ministers of a city in Arkansas have banned Sunday funerals except in cases of the unusual cost because they interfere in the Sunday worship.
