Washington high school held Library Week a few days ago and hoped to add to its library at five hundred. It then appealed to the teachers, the friends and realised at the close of the effort that it had received more than twice the number of books, not only that self help is the best help obtainable, but it also the power of cooperative effort. It probably could have happened that the principal of the school had been appointed to the Board of Education and obtained some of the books

THE HAMPTON-TUSKEGEE ENDOWMENT DRIVE
The trustees of Hampton Institute and of Tuskegee Institute have already passed the $4,000,000 in the drive for a $5,000,000 endowment fund for the two schools. The greatest amount of this money is coming from Northern and Eastern philanthropists who are interested in the two schools and who believe in the type of education which they furnish for the youth of the race. In the furtherance of this type of education, they see the greatest amount of benefit securing to the race and to the nation.
The fact that America, as it now stands is a largely undeveloped country as to its arable lands coupled with the lack of skilled farmers makes the position of these philanthropists tenable. The lack too of members of the trades guarantees a place for the graduates of these schools in those lines of industry. That these institutions and their education should be a source of much pleasurable contemplation.
But the fact that so much money has been invested in this type of education also means that there must come a correspondingly greater striving on the part of those who have their direction in hand in order that the greatest benefits may accrue to them. The fact that the contacts in larger numbers must be made by which the thousands of Negro boys and girls benefit from these gifts may have larger opportunity for the exercise of their training. It means that some definite systems of keeping in touch with them after they have completed these courses must be had; that they must be encouraged to work in the industry and to make other lines of work as is now the case in many instances; that the way must be opened for their inclusion into the industrial scheme of the South where now in the majority of cases they find it hard to make their way. In fact, these larger gifts and the larger opportunity which they give for this type of education, also bring with them the possibility of making their way. They must be made with larger vision and more efficient methods. It is a tremendous task but one which must be performed.
A committee of citizens this week met with the Board of Education and laid before it a program of expansion for Negro schools in Dallas which may require a long period of time in carrying out but which is not unreasonable in its scope. It argues that the need for Negro school statistics for a long period of time, and it attempts to secure a fuller opportunity for Negro boys and girls in Dallas, an opportunity commensurate with their educational needs. The argument of this petition by citizen marks a new day in the educational life of Dallas in that it shows an interest in things educational which has not been as clearly seen before. It argues to the general public that the day in which teachers were left to think of the needs of the schools in which they worked and parents left them to their own devices, in past. It argues that there has been an increase in the need for teachers and the general public in the interest of the better training and larger opportunity of the youth of the race.
The Express commends the effort and expresses the hope that not only will this effort bring immediate good but that the future will witness the continuation of the interest in the need for education and that from Dallas there may go an urge to members of the race in other cities to do likewise in the interest of better educational facilities for the Negro children of Texas. It is an effort that deserves success and it is reasonable to presume, knowing our city as we do, that it will be possible that we need such interest on the part of our citizens was not so easily manifested.
PRESIDENT McKENZIE RESIGNS
That pastor who preached that "the sun do move" was not any farther off than some of those whom we hire to get their history and English all wrong in the course of their sermons. In the words of our contemporary, Editor R. R. Johnson, "we need to study wonders." This is a day of ignorance. Every congregation has the right to sermons that are the result of study, not accident.
Every time a man puts himself on the back for what he has done, he runders himself a little less able to see what he should do.
