ANOTHER Y: M. C. SECRETARY
Dallas pastor assisted by the Central Board of Management of the church brought into another Committee of Management composed of church and they, working together for the past few months, extended that they have called Mr. M. U. Ponworth, former leader of the church for his work among boys and young men, to take charge of the work among negroes in Dallas. All through their dedication that the work of the "Y" must go on to completion in this attempt, the active support of every pastor and congregation has been pledged to the response of all of the pastors and of those men who were central committee, that somehow it is now generally understood that the benefits to be derived are so great that the movement more of a certainty than has ever before been the
it is good that this is so. Dallas is long stood, long stood, long stood. The boys and young man of the city deserve to be supported and to support and to support it in a creditable way. The spirit now evidence must continue. The church should share. And the fact that the Christian should tie to the church memberships to that in no far distant future that we will be able to be seen. It has been badly needled and to rob under those circumstances there can be no better investment of time and of money than that of the boys and boys into the path of the men and boys into the path of the men, most stay behind this work.
Commencement time is: again upon us. Thousands of young students are coming out of our schools and colleges eager, ambitious, taking on the challenge toward increasing the welfare of the world. Have the same appoach been taken in the reason of the cooperative work of their parents and, of those who are coming in? Unfortunately little of this has been done. As a matter of fact, allow them all too often to have been there they had no training in this field so they could have been trained in a intelligence for which the space pays in accomplishment of small tasks. Should not contain this longer. If every city in Texas follows the example of Dallas, the two teachers should be in touch with the two teachers association by the time of the next meeting with the majority of its students. Many of its citizens have already joined and the majority of its teachers in every session of the state, improvement of the educational facilities of the Negro youth would be

Howard University students have furnished the third instance of student rebellion in Negro schools this year. First came Flak, where it was a well known fact that something was wrong with the method of handling the student body, next came Simmona University where little was known of the facts and where little publicity was given the uprising; now some Howard with a rebellion against the R. O. T. C. and compulsory military training. It appears however that the Howard students have rather given over the attempt at making the faculty accede to their wishes and have decided to go back to their classes.
The facts as obtainable from the Howard situation seem to show that that student body was against the very thing which it stood badly against, that the leaders of the students decided more by a desire to become "hoarse" than to improve a really bad condition. And because of this fact, there is little sympathy with their actions on the part of the general public. It appear as the needless jeopardizing of an institution which is filling a large place in our racial life and a forcing of an issue on the race generally which it is no position to meet fully.
Institutions of higher learning for Negroes are scarce. Too scarcity to be this needlessly endangered. In every case they have owed their existence and continuance to the philanthropy of those who have contended, against large odds on the part of Southerners, that higher education for, the Negro was not the desirable thing. And in the case of Howard, the matter of existence has been peculiarly a matter which has depended on no real opposition, for it is supported by the Government, not as Government institution and in the past two years, it has felt keenly the effects of the opposition of those who contended that it should not be thus supported. Negroes are not in a position to finance and support such schools on the plane on which they have been educated, but they are not given an incentive to them the sort of support which will guarantee them the future which the situation demands. In the light of such consideration as this and taking into consideration the crying need for more institutions of higher learning of the larger and more efficient sort, it is hard to understand or explain why such institutions have been guilty of. They have stood in their own light.
LAW AND ORDER IN DALLAS
The fact that a mob of citizens attempted to storm the jail last week and forcibly remove two prisoners indicted for a heinous crime, brought Dallas into the public eye in unfortunate manner, but the fact that that mob was repulsed and that there was union of all of the better thinking citizens in an appeal for law and order has caused an appreciation of the real spirit of Dallas that probably was not had before. It has established a reputation for orderly procedure that poses well with its reputation for excellence in other things.
Lynch law is anarchy. It destroys orderly government for it substitutes the will of the mob for the procedure which has been laid down as best by organized society. But this fact has been so long disregarded in the South that until recently, it has happened that the will of the mob was the thing to be expected rather than that orderly procedure should maintain. That it is which is responsible for the fact that attempts to protect Negro prisoners accused of crime occasion more than the ordinary amount of commendation, and the foiling of the mob is a thing for which to be especially grateful. And, though the leaning toward law instances that are recorded every year, will be rising before the process of the law will be the usual thing and such instances ordinary.
Therefore, every Negro citizen of Dallas now has an heightened regard for the action of the police departments of both city and bounty as a result of the determined efforts of the police to protect the citizens, the desire of the better thinking white citizens that this city shall at all times be governed by law rather than by the mob. They are now, more sure that their attempts at home buying and at improving their lot in life and that of their families are being made more of stress similar to this, they have no need to fear the ruthless terrorism that has characterized so many of the cities of the South. And the fulness of this appreciation cannot be ignored. The mob has been forced to live at the mercy of the mob rather than under the knowledge that the law would at all times be supreme.
THE VALUE OF A GOOD NAME
is no better evidence of the value of a sense of the plight of one who is with the two men now under indictment have shocked the whole of this an unhealthy in the life of this city is
There is no better evidence of the value of a good name that an instance of the plight of one who is without one. The case of the two men now under indictment for the crimes which have shocked the whole of this state and caused such an upheaval in the life of this city is good proof of the fact that it pays to live so that some account of orderly procedure can be recorded rather than that nothing can be said for one. Their trial will definitely determine their guilt. But the whole of their record is against them. So far as has been determined, they have lived wholly by their wits, if wits they had. They have never worked, they have not attempted to accumulate, they have been known only for the evil which they have done, and this knowledge has been gained from those who have known them well.
How much better it would have been for them and for all concerned if they could point to some worthy thing done or to some definite policy of good living attempted. But they have nothing to which to point. They have a bad memory, and they have no public mind as the facts as inscribed will before the law.
In the light of the fact that there are many of our young people who as yet have not realised the full truth of the fact that "a good name is better to be chosen than great riches." It is well that their attention be called to it and that parents and those who have their direction in change help them to live according to that knowledge. To thus call their attention is not needless moralizing.
It seems that at last organized labor is having the plight of the Negro labor shown, to be taken over by the efforts of the representatives of The National Negro Labor League. There is hope for better conditions in the future if only the Beltiful the situation can be borne home to the heads of this organization. Negro labor must have a larger part in the scheme of organized labor if organized labor is to maintain its power. There is no doubt not that mutual benefit will result from a greater attempt to include Negro labor in the planning of the union.

THE DALLAS EXPRESS, DALLAS, TEXAS, SATURDAY, MAY 30, 1925
ark to be Scene of G
ation on June Nineteen
Although the full program for the Emancipation Day
Celebration at Fair Park, June 19, is not yet completed, suf-
ficient of the details have been arranged to make the follow-
ing general announcements.
The grounds will be open to the public as early as 10
o'clock in the morning.
Fair Park to be Scene of Gala Celebration on June Nineteenth
At that hour all the amusement devices in the park, including the rides "Lightin'!," "The Sky Rocket," "The Racing Derby" and the others will be in operation.
The Skee Ball Alley will also be open for business, together with the "Mirror Maze," the Cigarette Shooting Gallery, the Carousel or Merry-Go-Round, the Kids' Giant Swing, and the Old Mill.
The Old Mill has been newly rebuilt and will afford a new experience.
By noon time, all the dining rooms will be ready to take care of any who may apply.
The drill contests, according to plans will start at 2 p. m. and the baseball games at 4 p. m.
It is expected that drill teams from the Knights of Fythias, the American Woodmen and the Odd Fellows will continue.
The Dallas Express will be in position, next Saturday, to print the full program as finally arranged by the committee, which is hard at work on the details. This committee is composed of S. M. Brown, general chairman, W. E. Carter, Addison, and the staff. The latter will have full charges of the women's department of the celebration program, and all the club and other women's organizations will take an active part in the day's celebration.
It is planned to have the grand ball at night, in the great Automobile and Manufacturing Building, which will easily accommodate 1,000 people or 2,000 people. The best of music will be furnished, and the maple floor it is promised by the committee, will be in the pink of condition.
THE FINAL PROGRAM FOR THE JUNETEENTH
The Knights of Pythias, Odd Fellows and American Woodman will compete in drill contest for the prize to be given away. The cup will be on display Saturday, May 30th at the Little Gem Drug Store. This one is reserved by Mr. J. Bingham Heaver. During the daw, Aviator McVey will fly and give demonstrations of his flying stunts. In the afternoon there will be a ball game between the Dallas Black Sox, a fast local team and Arden, Okla.
There will be a band concert given by the K.of P. Bannerman and his orchestra in the automobile building. At 8 p. m., the dance orchestra will take their place in the same building and dancig. will be in order.
