I have read with a great deal of interest the letter on the Bap. W. L. Dickson which appeared in the last issue concerning the affairs of the G. C. O. of O. P. of Texas Jurisdiction. Mr. Dickson hit a vital point in reference to this matter. There does not seem to be any real reason why the Grand Lodge should not receive interest on the large sum of money which is reported as not being on interest.
In the swore statement as made to The Commissioner of Insurance, Mr. Middle stated that $45,508.12 was in the bank not on interest to the credit of The G. C. O. of O. P. whereas, the laws of the order provide that all funds must be deposited in banks on interest. 45,508.12 at 4 per cent would have added $2,672.50 to the credit of the

order. Why has the law not been complied with? The laws further provide that all money collected by Mr. Riddle be remitted by him monthly to the grand Treasurer. From the worn report it seems he has paid the money for the present, and as this money appears to be on deposit in Denison banks, if Mr. Riddle persists in overriding the will of the majority and disobeying the law of the order, is so far as becoming a money is the Grand Treasurer's only issue. It is concerned, it does seem, that he would have the welfare of the order sufficiently at heart to make some arrangement with the Denison banks to pay the Old Fellows' fee. But he has not yet been at a time of money that he keeps on deposit with them.
I wish also to call attention to some other discrepancies that lead to show inefficiency on the part of Mr. Riddle, shows that the Grand Fellows during 1924 had a membership of 24639. He collected, according to this report on WORL Tax, 11.50 per member, Mr. Riddle should have collected at least 126,958.50 during 1924. This makes a discrepancy of 15461.32. Every Old Fellow knows that he should have collected even more than 26,958.50. He has not yet been at a time of the order pay Tax during the year and drop out before the close of the year but who are not counted among the 24639 members.
1. AKE PLACID, N. Y. May 25. The John Brown Memorial Association, led by Dr. J. Max Barber of Philadelphia, held its third-annual memorial service, and also celebrated the 18th anniversary of John Brown's birth at the grave of the old abolition here Thursday. The outstanding features of the celebration was an address by Oswald Darrion Villard, grandson of William Lloyd Warrion. He took to task officials of the United States Army President Collidge down, who was sworn to enforce the Constitution, before which every child in America must bow as if it were a cester's hat before when, once Swiss peace has had to worship and yet, who openly wink at the disfranchisement of colored people in the South-kneaking in the Town Hall at Lake Beald. and sometimes they serve good purpose. Therefore let us make a compulsion. Let us see how the collection of Plurial Tax compares with that of the K of P. Accruying the awn report of the Knights of Pythass is fied. The Commissioner of Insurance for 1924, the Knights of Pythass during that year, is member of the 1924 group. For members who should have led to 1924, they should have called to fact the report show that they actually collected for Plurial tax. The report was found that they collected on their entire membership once and on and as a result of the collection of the 1924 group from the members who had the benefit of the order. According to the Act, the 1924 group will have collected at tenst 1924-2000. If the members should have carried this total to at least 14,000.
If the 14th is added, the 14th is to understand how the Knights of the 14th has been to be collected in 1924. If the 14th is 1924 members while the 14th is 1924. If the 14th is 1924 members, they'll be on 2024 members.
Knights of Pythass collection more Burial Tax on 1945 members than the 14th. The 14th is the same number when the rate is the same number. It's 100 would be please.

Nineteen of the men indicted pleaded guilty to being accessories before the fact of mutilation, while four, other, pleaded noo contendere to the lower charge.
Sam Lilly will be assigned at a later date as an accessory if he receives from self-inflicted wounds. Three men pleaded not guilty to being accessories, and it was indicated that the state would not press these.
"I consider with Shiro the most recent of the verdicts. Don Gifflin, an unaccompanied person, is not a member of the court. It would be accepted as to the defendant, Joseph Needleman, indicted on a charge of attacking a young white girl for which he was awaiting arraignment in Martin County court when the mob broke into the jail and committed the crime against him."

To our surprise and kinder we were informed that the Brotherhood had decided that no member of their organization would be permitted to work in the work. In the job, and without any kind of notice our work stopped.
This action put us up against it in good and kind of way. I did know what manner we were to carry out our contract. Since the Brotherhood has by uninjured work and mediously interfered with the work of the work, we have been forced to take a firm stand and against them for the work that we have done to to the public. The newly elected President, William Green, who succeeded Samuel Gompers and the full membership of the Council, consisting of ten heads of internationales were present. BRUTALLY ASSAULTED IN EARLE THEATRE
Philadelphia, Pa. May 23–Thomas Pandeton, explained that chauffeur by Mr. R. H. Goodwin, of the Touraine Apartments, accompanied his young son, Sol. W., to the Harle theatre, where Ikeets were purchased to witness a performance of Duster, Keston in "Seven Chances to Win a Game," the play of the house, purchased tickets for seats in the first balcony, but was told by the standard to go above. It was directed to seats in what is generally termed "the peanut gallery." Here the little boy claimed he was a "the peasant gallery," and the ticket had been ricked back to the seats for which his tickets were purchased. Where they had been directed is seldom used, and on this occasion there were only one or two other persons, Colored Pandeton, was asked to give up. "A man who has a good mind is called 'for those seats.' Whereupon he was set upon by four men, who could not make him move, although they handled him quite roughly. Finally they went outside and got a crossing policeman who, without any help, was called out, "A man who is disturbing the peace. Meanwhile, the little boy had become frightened and had crossed the street police station, where the presiding authority, Judge Fitzgerald strongly reprimanded those responsible for the use of the police.
Pendeton resides at the Y. M. C. A. and gained some prominence about these years ago when his automobile was commanded by police in an effort to capture bandits, who had been shot by a shot through the windshield, which shot barely missed Pendeton.

Beauty Culturist of International Repute Sponsors Nationwide Beauty Contest
World-Famous Beauty Culturist to Spend Thousands in Nationwide Quest for "Miss Golden Brown"
MEMPHIS, TENN, — Announcement in formally made today of the opening of the National Golden Brown Beauty Contest which will be by far the greatest and most far-reaching contest of its kind ever conducted upon this continent. Sponsored by Madame Mamie Hightower, internationally famous Beauty Culturist and Race Benefactress, this contest has for its prime purpose the finding of the one most beautiful girl in all of America who most truly exemplifies the traditional beauty of our Group. Only a woman of the remarkable mental endowment of Madame Hightower, together with a philanthropic love for her Race, so many tings proven, would undertake to launch a campaign of such tremendous scope and such magnitude. In addition to offering a ventable fortune in prizes, Madame Hightower performs a service to her Race that cannot be expressed in more dollars and cents, for in sponsoring this remarkable contest she simultaneously stimulates Race women to an even higher attraction of beauty. This great woman has most assuredly been destined to leave her indelible stamp on the Race she loves so well and serves so faithfully. The true personification of beauty betterment, she opposes the pathway to fame and fortune for thousands of women and girls who avail themselves of this life-time opportunity.
A Brief Sketch of Madame Hightower's Meteoric Rise
A few years ago Madame Miah Heightower was a more nobody. Unhonored to care her shoulders, valiantly to care her arms, she struggled to begin an armrestroom beginning she had traveled step by step, to the hipknot ring in the back of her Beile Street was her first business venture and to us, it was a hard road in those old days. But Madame Miah had an man friend, she was a hard road and she did not fear work. Gratulately her clientele gave and came to include her herself with a staff of expert chemists she began to expand her business in the city. She benefited from her products over the, the Golden Brown Label. Succeed once by demean and bravery, dreamy, was a reality. But that did not stop her. On and on she lived, fearful for the trust of thousands who have impaired confidence in her judgement and understanding.
Almost from the very first time they were put upon the market the famous Golden Brown Toilet Preparations had a steady and consistent sale. Rumors of the fame of Madame Marnie Highflower were preceding her into the North, East and West and already thousands in these localities were clamoring for her preparations. In the beginning the Golden Brown line infuded a Cold Cream, Vanishing Cream, Rouge, Lip Stick, Beauty Ointment, Hair Dressing, Face Powder and Talcum but all the time this tiltsen soon was working to confer newer and greater

Then in the Fall of 24 saw the creation of her famous novel, *Night of the Twelve*, nised as the two pearles creams of all women in the twentieth century—anawoman, man, woman, and man—that career can be incarnate to all ambitions, daughters and sons of our族 Group who are born in the same race.
Where, Oh, Where Is Miss Golden Brown?
That is the question that in pairing thousands of people from New York to Calgary, from the North from the East. Will she be a dancing young debutante? Will she be a dancing young debutante? Will she be a decorative or a de luxe housemate? Now can she answer these questions? How will she fall where it rightly belongs and though though unknown the play is Brown? Will she be internationally famous overseement. This paper substatutively fully acquainted with the rules of the play, because it imitates the true magic, but before this context is made in scope and the winner may be some little unhappy hamster as well as some predated metronome. Brown's "Glass" will be the favorite question asked in the houses, the called the first two of our group congregates.
A Galaxy of Prizes for the Nation's Leading Beauties

has never been the white feather, neither has it been disgroased by the yellow streak. It is not afflicted with the flammet mouth, in a plain, every day, considerable, conservative newspaper, which trims no sell to catch
as gassing breeze; flies no doubt 'flag' It professes a patriotism as broad as our country. Its love of even hand-d justice covers all the secret-very-accepted by the human-use. This is pretty high ground, but we live on it and are pre-pering. Boys of the press come up and stand with us. This ground is holy.
REVIVING THE BUSINESS LEAGUE
The Express has noted with a great deal of interest that a group of the business men of the city of League and that they are starting out to make of it the force in the league. And that they are starting badly needed. The Express hopes that this rethink will be the beacon of long life of a sort which the league has not heretofore enjoyed. It will be a testament to persevere it has resulted in failure and it has occurred in these failures it is to be bined at the door of those who have dived into the league determined; nor does it make much difference now that all of them are determined; mark them are past. The future of the league should concern us, and this new organization and its heads should be accorded the power of support which will bring the league.
But there is no reason for the failure of those who now direct it, but the failure of those who past and to make the sort of mistakes which were responsible for the failure of the league should they be content to do more time and to be satisfied with a league in name only. The league should public all of the finance which it needs can no league at all. If business men can manage it, they have no business with the operation of their own company, they have no business with the operation of a knowledge of the fact that in- time past the league has made out of a knowledge of the fact that in- time past the league has made out of a knowledge of the membership fee, should it smalt and that the public should be approached with projects called necessary funds for operation.
business men are either business men indeed or they are men in business, in making such but who are unwilling to make their share in making their business, in sorting of seeming liteness which requires them to be good at the larger appraisal, which have enabled them could have but gotten the larger vision. It is by chance that they may be able to accomplish there will be such an abundance of that sort of spirit that they will be able to both constantly and constantly. Talia means a real life and vivile existence, capable of being like being, in the hope of That with it, it will be done. There have been too many failures. Now if the there is much measure in the contemplation of the cooperative plastic effort which is soon to be shown to the church of the life to success. The script behind it is good. It is only to be hoped that their felt in greater quantity inward to a greater variety of the welfare of the group generally.
There is much food for thought in the recently published statement of the Knights of Pythias of Texas as compared with other Fratral Orders operating within the State. Without consideration of its standing as compared with others the accomplishment of the Order under the leadership of Honorable W. S. Willis should be a source of extreme satisfaction to those who would guage the ability of fraternal concerns to expand sensibly and conservatively yet consistently.
It is a fact that the story of the change of fortune of this Fraternity reads like a fairy story. Ten years ago it was an inconvenient today, its men alone have assets of more than $601,000 and its women have a treasury in excess of $200,000. Their total is well over three quarters of a million dollars and there is reason to feel that as time goes on and the principles of development continue, the goal set three years ago of a million dollars in assets and 50,000 members will become an actual fact.
Things do not happen in this world accidently. Modern business procedure has proven it true that Sense behind Dollars makes a combination which guarantees growth of the substantial sort, and naturally guarantees that the benefits to those directly interested are greater than where there are dollars unbacked by careful planning and systematic handling. And it is well from time to time the public can have such ocular demonstrations of how our concerns are growing for the reason that the race needs to have it indisputably stamped within its consciousness that the day of "hit or miss" methods has passed, and that those who contribute to the welfare of cooperative concerns must receive and should demand such handling of their affairs as will result in this lasting good.
In certain respects the present Grand Chancellor and his Board of Directors have been pace makers in Texas in that, as far as records show, this Order was the first to institute Drives for Membership which, carefully sifting them as to insurability at the same time offered to the masses of our people an opportunity for efficient protection well within their means. Its importance to this Order has made it possible that its surplus be used in the aiding of members of the Order in financing homes and creating those institutions of service which tend to develop the race along other lines. Such procedure definitely justifies the study of business methods of the more modern sort. It proves the contention that our larger concerns are more important than the smaller systemsized more thoroughly. The fact that the Texas jurisdiction of Knights of Pythias stands at the fore-front of fraternal societies, at the same time that its statement gives satisfaction to those who glory in great achievement, should urge those interested in other concerns whether fraternal or otherwise to seek to know the secret of bickering that the greatest benefits may be had.

Over 200 Negro singers refused to appear in a musical program of the International Women's Conference in Washington a few days ago because of the fact that members of the race and representatives belonging to the Conference were Jim Crowed in the seating in the auditorium of the building. The movement of protest was led by Miss Helley Q. Brown and Mrs. Mary Bethune. The singers were under the direction of Henry L. Grant, Nantandell Dett, Roy Tibbs and others of National renown. In a statement Miss Brown declared that "We felt we could not submit to this ostracism, and though we had two hundred noted singers, when we found that the segregation existed, we could not be humiliated in the eyes of the foreign women who had come to believe that America was the land of the free and the home of the brave."
It is unfortunate in more than a few ways that prejudice in America should cause such occasions as this in which the reputation of the nation is made to suffer and bitterness arises from more than a few sources. At times the constant recurrence of such situations almost provokes the wish that the declaration that this is a "land of the free and the home of the brave" be forgotten and that in its stead it should declare and be internationally understood that men are rated and are governed in accordance with the color of their skin, the texture of their hair and their ancestors must be accommodated in any scheme of recognition by accomplishment and ability. And the view that representative men and women of our race should be placed in possession of all of the facts regarding the arrangement as to their accommodation before such affairs are staged and that they be given opportunity to accept or reject invitations to appear on such occasions under such circumstances.
It is shameful to contemplate the aspect that such an occurrence discloses. Here in The National Capital the supported Home of Law, Maker! Cradle of Liberty! Instead we have a hot bed of segregation, a constant recurrence of injustice in the action of the that and other protections in the department of the government themselves and seem accession in the practice of segregation by those whose sworn duty it is to up hold the Constitution which declares all men created and entitled to the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Among other facts disclosed by the Housing Survey was one to the effect that nearly one-half of the Negro homes studied contained no books or music. Such condition though and can be remedied by none but ourselves. Culture must be cultivated.

I have been moving just a little since I mailed that letter from Jefferson City, Mo., to you for I returned to St. Louis, and spent Sunday with the Rev. Dr. O. L. Maxwell, pastor of the First Baptist Church, and his people. It was mine to speak Sunday morning and evening for the people, and believe me when I tell you they have one more congregation. Well he is a great preacher, and the Sunday I was with him, he had a big bapcaling. He put them down deep way out of sight, as Baptist and will do. They will bury you deep and you must tell the preacher before he totes you in the water that you have been born again. A large number were put under the water.
In the afternoon, I called to use some friends, among them W. H. Brown, and then a conference with Prof. Aaron E. Malone. President of Peru college, and one of the most interesting characters in the race. He was preparing to go to Jefferson, and had just reached the college from a business trip East. He is a member of the Board of Lincoln University, and some of the politicians were trying to onset President Young. Mr. Malone declared that the institution should not be used to pay political debts and to that end he was working. He could see no particular reason why President Young should not be retained. He was putting over a great program for the people and
Too often Negro schools are used to settle debts, and men are at times selected at the heads whether qualified or not. I want to see the time when all state schools will be divored from politics with alimony and the best men will be selected. I had the pleasure of coming in touch with some of the teachers and met one from St. Charles, Mo. Miss Corneille.
It was my pleasure to touch many lives on this visit to all Louis, and then I pulled away reaching Chicago in time to touch a funeral, and it was the funeral of Frank L. Gillie. The people just filled Olivet Baptist church. They came from all parts of the country to pay tribute to a rapist that and an insurance king. The funeral oration was delivered by the Rev. Dr. Brady, from Detroit Michigan.
I went to the home of, Charles W. Warner, the founder of the National Baptist convention for the National Baptist convention, and I do not know why they call him "Warner." He followed in the footsteps of many other leaders out of the church, but he made it his mission to make it many liberals he is the leader of. He says that he is so eager to be an evangelist that no reason why he is making it

We will well know that every new thought that has been presented to the world has been hooted but we also know that everything in this world is a question of degree and that nothing is positive but the "nonsuccessiveness of the most venenous" It is the degree of reluctance that the majority of black people have to get away from the terrible tentacles of slavery that areness us. It is an undilepted verity that we are behind the rest of the great people of the world and our great people is humilating and stagnating.
Those who seek freedom, equality and liberty are abreast of the times. Those who offer means and methods are ahead of the times, but those seek to check every effort toward real emancipation, those who promote their surroundings with tears and maggings are behind the time and are keeping the race marking time.
Dalil Khalil, who grew up in earlware in New York, came to ware in Houston, D.C. to hear the music of his favorite band at this big music festival, but knew they were playing at the singer's head, and when the singer heard this, he sang for them white folks, and out loud. He knew they were known for their black, brown, and white music, and he knew they also knew how to do that, because he was speaking loud, right out in the crowd. We are speaking loud, right out in the crowd.

These young women have the finest cafe in the city of Danville, and the wealth of that city eat with them, they give their parties in their place, and believe me that they are loyal to their race and to their church. Just a few days ago, they entertained Miss Catherine Johnson, of the National Association.
On to Nashville, where I found two leaders waiting for me, Dr. A. M. Townsend, of the National Baptist convention. He is secretary of the Sunday School Publishing Board, and Dr. J. C. They learned that I was passing through and decided to shake my life block hand. I thank them now. Both brought some lunch for me.
Now then off, for Birmingham and here I am. Found Prof. Herbert B. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
This column is for answering questions pertaining to Negro history. Last week the writer received letters asking many questions on subjects that have no relation whatever to race history. While he would be pleased to favor all seekers of information, he has not the time to answer any questions, save those dealing with racial history. I have heard that Negroes invented the railroad and automobile. Please give me some data upon the same. W.B. It. West Philadelphia.
As far as we know the Negro had nothing to do with the original invention of either the rallied or automobile.
Please let me know where I may obtain a History of Liberia?—E. J. Koleus C.H.S. Mo.
We know of no such book. The African Year Book, published by the African Times and Orient Review, contains an exhaustive article on Liberia written by Chief Hist. Davenport from四五 to a few years ago. You might write to Dose Mohmed Ali 2214 Pine Street, St. Louis, Mo. and ask the cost of a call book and where it may be obtained. Mr. Ali was the committee of the same.

By Robert P. Edwards (For the Associated Negro Press) 101 Who Was St. Benedict the Moor?
St. Benedict the Moor was born in Ban, Fradella, Meissau, Italy, in 1265, of slave parents. On account of their faithfulness, Benedict was given his freedom. Benedict was always very religious, and at an early age joined an association of hermits. When Pope Pius IV dissolved this association, Benedict entered the Franciscan Order. Owing to his virtues, he was made a superior of a monastery in Palarma, which he reformed and ruled successfully until his death in 1659. He was pronounced blessed in 1742 and cannonized in 1807. His feast is celebrated on April 3rd.

Davis' Curves and Speed Ball
Puzzles Wiley
MARSEALL, Teas. May 25—The fast Bishop team staged a come back on their old rival Wiley and beat them 5-2 here Monkey at Wiley Field before added speedfasters. The two teams were played between the two schools is always a drawing card in Teas. Wiley won the first and felt that the last was to be her's having scored one run in the first and third giving her a two run lead. But the Tigers came to their own in the 4th and opened up with smart bunting base running and stealing which netted them 4 runs which gave them a two run lead on the cats. It was here that the Wild Cats found themselves helping before the dazzling curves and speed ball of Davis. The noted Wiley Slugars Bov's reached the base after the 3rd in the 7th, the Bishop Tigers's spored-again—from them on cut it up and 3 down. Batterjes for Wiley? Benjamin Smith and Pardee.

the star, also may be your wife or sweetheart, your friend, your teacher—yourself. You someone nice and do you can learn the greatest honor that has ever been made a girl of our group.
FOR years I have dreamed of the day when I should have the means to search for the most beautiful woman of our race in America. I perceived that the women of other races were provided with cosmetics made especially for them. Many centuries ago our race knew the secrets of beauty culture—history sings the praises of Africa's beautiful women; it is even said that Cleopatra, the beauty of all beauties, was of our race, but through the velsatitudes of fortune royal pride was lost, possibly when our forebears were dragged away captives.
I believed, and now I know I am right, that the Golden Brown chemists could discover formulas that would do for us what ordinary preparations failed to do. My Golden Brown Beauty Preparations have now been used for ten years and today our pride race is awake. Look about you and see the difference! See the beam of light that shines on our faces. We are married or she may be a detainee. Who is she?
In stores, in their homes! Can you dispute me when I say our girls and our women are—the most charming the world has ever known!
So now, when Golden Brown Beauty Preparations are at the touch of all, being most moderately sold and sold by drugsters everywhere who appreciate our trade, I am searching for her who mos. truly exemplifies the beauty of our group. Expense will not be a factor. Thousands of dollars will be spent in nationwide advertising going to every nook and cranny of America, for she may be an obscure country girl—she may be a trained nurse, a lawyer's secret an acorn, a bride or she may be a detainee. Who is she?
When I find her I will make her famous. I will dress her in fine clothes. I will present her with a luxurious car for her very own. She will be the most sought-after of our race. Will she be a Nominate your favorite vote for her—it costs you nothing.
