Segregation Fights Are Waged In Seventeen Cities In United States LET THE PRAIRIE VIEW DIRECTORS TAKE TIME ENOUGH TO GET A GOOD MAN More than one aspect of the problem which confronts the thinking public as well as the members of the Board of Directors in regard to the situation at Prairie View is worthy of careful study and merits deliberation in more than the ordinary amount, if that school is to come up to the degree of efficiency which the general public and the State has the right to expect of it. At present, its affairs are being administered by a temporary head. And, in this concluding chapter, that causal investigation discloses the fact that he is commanding a degree of co-operation from both students and faculty which argues that the head erate enough to guarantee to that a school a president who will work up to the point that is neces- sary in its service of the educational needs of the race in the state. The Service serves the dual purpose of training the majority of the teachers of the state and of giving practical training to those who will enter the trades and vocations. In fact, the number of teachers equipped to do this and in some respects, it is sady lacking. Particularly is the lack noticeable in its teacher training department, there were more than twice the number enrolled for teacher training in 1922-23 as there were in the trades and vocations, and we are now furnished for the trades and only three in the teacher training department. And the room in which the practice work for the trades and vocations only can be carried only on a dow. The appalling results of this lack can be readily appreciated when it is realized that of the whole number of Negro teachers in the cent were trained in this school. And here it may also be remarked that of the total number of Negro teachers 31 per cent are graduates of no more. It is not to be wondered at then that the Survey Committee a few months ago, in its Office, the Department of Education ordered the school "needs thorough reorganization both as to its curricula and administration" in order to meet the demands of a teacher training institution. Thus it is true that to a greater extent than is true of any other institution in the state, this school needs to thoroughly competent school man; one who has the actual knowledge of technical school administration; one who has had the training to give him the ability to harmonize the two sorts of courses which are offered by the institution and see to it that each receives the equipment and equipment which it needs. But such a man cannot be attracted by the meager salary which the institution may be willing to come to the place as soon as he has reason to feel that he may lose his place at every change of political administration.
