He loved his innocent and brought the man to the attention of the Interracial Commission. The Commission had had doubt about the matter and took action at once. They delegated two Colored men to hit and injure view the boy. On receipt of the report of these men, which convinced them that there was grave doubt about the guilt, the Commission employed a lawyer, went into court, and asked a rehearsal granted and in the second trial the boy was sentenced to ninety-nine years of imprisonment. The case was not ratified, as to his guilt and another trial, making bond for the prisoners in the sum of H180. A forfeiture was imposed on the boy. One of these so elected was a former Texasan, a young man who was a member of the Delta. In the states of Massachusetts, and California, the votes of members of the race determined by Negro voters in other states and indirectly. Definite tones are to be heard in the Negro vote in other states and the same measures must come to characterize the Negro votes in Texas. Of course in Texas there is such a sentiment in favor of the Negro vote that beaten puts that definite change in the thinking of the leaders of there can be much change in the conditions of which we c-implain. But there can be no doubt but the real way for the Negro in every section of this country if he will be living and is being found good in every other section of this country. He must maintain by legal means and is being found good in every other section of this country. The right to cast his ballot and then he must, with respect to the voting process in the raining of those civil rights which for so many years, he has. The future welfare of every Texas child is bound up in the disposition of every Texas Negro to vote and his willingness to study the condition which fuses the state can now stand the test of time. He can be completely disfranchised as far as the good which the scattered contests in which he takes part. The Republican party has practically gone out to the "no-peace"ocratic party is awarded against his participation in the contests in which he takes part. Primary. The condition must be changed. The Democrat must be the best and must be relianted to delivery by the com- mitted efforts of every Negro who would be a waiter, a waitress or a netta needs. Contrasts must be piled in every case. Poor men must be judged for the prowess of the cases which are constantly arriving from these countries. NR- BOLL, TAX, ENHOPE, IS A BADHOUSE. NURSHEH IS A MUNICIPAL MUSEUM for en- trances in any context. Is given the MUST THINK WE WILL COUNT IN THEIR OWN POLITICAL contests, county cessions and every kind must be taken mans seriously of the word will come when the things unknown and the rela- tivitie of the whole race in the north will have become a reality. that after such affairs the press of the state has come out in defense of decency and told the governor and all of his officials to investigate. Presidents have spoken from their pupils and all of those in office have raised them, and the press has been called in to have come in with their report of "parties unknown" and the country has resolved itself again into mental slumber as far as crime was concerned. This case is different Here the facts have been furnished and all that now remains is that the state go into the heart of the matter. Will South Carolina do it? The fact that South Carolina is in the south and that it is never the custom to handle white men of the south for their crimes upon Negroes, we are hopeful that this case may prove different. South Carolina has made very definite strides in civilization recently, that is in the punishment of its mob members, and there is reason to hope that this case may prove that it is still willing to point the way to the rest of the South in the matter. It is also clear that the state has entrenched to death and it is to the governor of the state that all of the facts in the case were given. What will South Carolina do? SO THIS IS AMERICA This America is a wonderfully contradictory, country taken from some rather differing circumstances which may come to the attention of the casual observer. It is a nation composed of persons whose conduct in civic and social units gives reason for much study and pature. It represents the best and worst of the world in many respects, and because it is the most promising of all of those nations which are in the conduct of their conduct, its conduct under certain circumstances is worthy of special consideration. Take the facts in the Alken lynching as they have been given to the general public for apprehensions. LIVE TO THE COMMUNITY CHEST One of the best marks of a completely civilised group of human beings is its willingness to take care of the less fortunate members of that group. It is this fundamental which is at the bottom of the establishment of charitable organizations or vansions hindx, the preparation for the care of the unfortunate in every civic unit and the maintenance of the welfare of the less fortunate. It is a privilege Which every socially minded person should welcome when such efforts are launched in a community and as far as Dellas is concerned and our group in this city, there should be no hesitation in any case. The annual Community Chest campaign is now under way. Negroes have a special division and it is under the direction of the Negroes to contribute to the progress of the city in general and of the group in particular. Negroes profit to a great extent by the organi- THE DALLAS EXPRESS, DALLAS, TEXAS, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1920 izations which are financed from the Chest fund. They should give as largely as they are the contribution of every person for the larger gifts of a comparatively small group of individuals. The Express hopes that the results of this years campaign will exceed those of any former years and that the contributions of persons rather than the gifts of a small group, the larger the number of contributors, the larger the indication of that progress which the race is forever claiming but is seldom showing, the reaching of the point at which social movements itself in deeds of service to the community as such.
