Ziff Company, 404 Morton Bldg., 116 East Nassau St. THE DALLAS EXPRESS has never held the white feather, never been by the yellow streak. It is not afflicted with the flamed mouth. It is a magazine, a narrative newspaper, which trims no sail to catch the doublefist flag. It professes a patriotism as broad as our country. It lives among all the tertiary, occupied by the human ground, but we live off it and are presupposing. Rows of the press come up and stand with us. This ground is the A few days ago when a former peace officer went to the home of a Negro in Dallas for the purpose of searching the search room it is allowed that he fired upon the door, but he claimed that he could not open the door because he did not have the key. The man reported the affair and after an investigation by the department of the sheriff, the case was turned over to the grand jury. The grand jury found sufficiency to indict the officer for assault to murder. To some this procedure might seem unusual when it is taken into consideration that the officer was with and the grand jury it appears but that the natural thing has happened and that Dallas County by this action has again declared that its officers must be those who preserve the action of the grand jury should follow the presentation of sufficiency whose guise is proof should be given very heavy penalties. The matter of race is of no importance when the lives and safety of can Negroes but come to the conclusion that they are either not in earnest in their statementism or that they have not weight in the communities in which they reside. Surely the Negro in the south is coming to the conclusion that the influence of the law abiding white people is of little account or that there are no law-abiding white people. The Aliken case is but another of a large number of such facts have helped to force this conclusion. This Boston merchant told how of the fruit business of America he has raised to the new high. He said that the Negro in the south is coming to the conclusion that the influence of the law abiding white people is of little account or that there are no law-abiding white people. The Aliken case is but another of a large number of such facts have helped to force this conclusion. Negroes of this country are surely being forced to conclude that the influence of the law abiding white people of this country and especially of the South counts for very little or that there are no law abiding white people. They can come to no other conclusion than that human beings are done to death by savages by mobs and no prosecutions follow. Leading newspapers regularly 'denounce' these crimes. Governors deploy them in public print. Leading citizens make suitable statements concerning them but grand juries either do not get "sufficient evidence to indict" or they get no evidence at all. George Washington, the first white man was lynched and his lynchers were given prison terms. But every Negro in America realizes that there would have been nothing done the victim been black. Take Alken. Here is a plain case of the most dastardly kind of mob murder. If there is any such thing as degrees of brutality in mob murder, the victim is not a woman, but a woman, brought back for a more fair trial than they had received before, taken from a sheriff, almost declared with his permission and mobbed. Names of those participating in the lynching were secured together with sworn affidavits and yet the grand jury does nothing. A governor in passing from office conveniently had opportunity to "pass the buck" to his captors who orders a thorough probe. But there are no indictments. Upon what evil days has America fallen. For what does she hope in the face of this continued outrage? How can the law have any majesty as long as such conditions exist? What of the future under such conditions? The seriousness of the American affairs in Nicaragua and in China are as nothing as compared to the actual condition in which millions of American citizens at home are living each day. Murder, rapine, crime, conspiracy, all are as ram- STILL RISING Many years ago in a little school, now grown to the proportions of a university, a little black boy, one of a class which was being addressed by a visitor from the North and asked what word the Negro scholars of the south wished to send back to those who were making their education possible, replied "Tell 'em: we're rising." That statement became even more famous than did the little black boy who uttered it, but that it expressed the spirit which actuated him and is still guiding him in his future. Of the class he founded with another race institution making one of the longest and strongest of This matter of financial institutions within the race should challenge more than passing attention from all who lay claim to a desire for orderly progress along economic lines. Despite the fact that there have been surprisingly few failures of Negro banks institutions and that there is a well recognized need for more advanced Negro business institutions, there are still few Negro banks in the country as a whole and little effort is being made at their organization. Recent reports give about 70 such institutions. Their combined resources are not a finely known. But it is enough to realize that with so few such institutions there is too small a portion of Negro savings which are accessible to the majority of the population. Are they as vital to pay it off in place in the life of any country. The Express was that Texas were blest with more men of the vision of R. L. Smith, Wm. McDonald, presidents of the two most thriving Negro banks of this state, who pioneers in the field of banking like Major Wright, are making history against tremendous odds in the economic realm. But the Negro banks are more marketable. But that they are making definite contribution to the progress of the race cannot be gainaid. The size of their contribution to the belief of Negroes in their own ability to achieve cannot be measured. THE PRICE IS LOWER THAN IN REGULAR SLAVERY DAYS News dispatches state that a white man has been taken into custody in one of the counties of Louisiana for selling a family of three Negroes into virtual slavery for the paltry sum of $20. Comments upon the occurrence indicate that the practice is common in that section and that the price paid him is by no means out of the ordinary. The fact is that the department of the planters of that section conditions are even better than they were during regular slavery days. Then the price of slaves was higher. Some of them, we understand, brought as high as $1,000 and hardly ever was one sold for less than $200, and in that case some defect was necessarily present. Things have changed for the better in Louisiana in this, the year of our Lord 1927. Think, if you please of the tremendous progress made in the culture during the years since the Civil War. The value of creation materially. The Market, thanks to automobile transport, are closer and more easily reached. Taxes for schools are very little higher, and best of all the price of labor. Negro labor, has even decreased, thanks to the continued reign of "Nordics" in Louisiana and the political expediency which makes Federal intervention THE DALLAS EXPRESS, DALLAS, TEXAS, SATURDAY, FEBRIARY 12, 1967 in such cases impossible. Who can tell but that as the news of this occurrence is broadcast, all of the sister states of the south will not, find it admissible to openly later for the sale of Negroes as does this county in Louisiana Just because it THREE NEGROES FOR $40 and who had but that the planter who bought them did not nagle over that sum? Our esteemed contemporary, Brother Richardson, has again been guilty of stepping off on the wrong foot. He takes this scribe to task for his failure to mention the very important fact that the National Negro Banings League was to meet in Dallas this summer. For the information of Brother Richardson, we must learn closely, we might state that the League will meet this year in St. Louis. outfit for young men and women. Starik Chicago, Jan. 21, 2013 — (ANP) From Boston, there came to Chicago this week, a big business man, and we combined their purchases in order to complete with the growing "Challah stores" throughout the nation. We started with the latest, and will increase, he said. They buy in large quantities, and we therefore a Negro merchant, in the grocery business, for example, can compete with our competes in higher prices by the appeal to "race pride." There are two lines of business in which the Negro has shown wide progress in recent years: Toltec artisan business, different kinds of business, and get they have made advantages and opened new. Add to the newspaper, and outside of the largest national lines of employment, not get into new fields, right now! This mark be done. The field is unlimited, if there is unity. Furniture, clothing, Maternal Instruments, apothecaries, shoes, and not handle these lines? Why not? unity of notion will accomplish the goal. A large number of worth of abode from a sample case that year. I know of a woman in Chicago who paid 17,000 dollars worth of abode to houses. There are half dozen offices in Chicago that do more than 10,000 dollars worth of business a year with Nergest, more than a thousand things from pins to houses, get all the profits. The head of one of the big institutions has been quite successful in schools. It is highly commendable and helpful, but in the past it has not really regarded an investment. Nergest of America should develop some of their own mall order buters and controlled by Nergest, and end up in what would be a transnational commercial asset and furnish another building our schools and colleges. We must take these executives opening the other fellow is going to be a teacher. As I have gone into the smaller communities of the various Southwestern States, and have served upon the credibility of our trustful people. I have been within the white man press upon the credibility of our trustful people. I have been within the within the group, there will be those around to a high sense of duty, in the spirit of cooperation to help them. The time is ripe for the beginning of new activities. "There are hands held wordless" who have money in the banks, and are willing to back responsible leadership must come to the front. Men and women are writing letters, and holding sentences for the purpose of "getting somewhere" who have had some money to invest in them. I have told them their plans. I have told them their plans will crystallize as they must the day they are hired. I have told them to think big and act big. It takes no more energy to handle dollars it does to handle nickels and dimes. It is human nature if a person sees one prospering in one line, for others to try the same line. In the field of Negro commercial appraisal, there is no need of drawing, and as one put it to me, "I know there is room at the top, for there isn't in it" but room here at the bottom.
