The daily papers last week told of a delegation of "leading Negroes" which called on Finance Commissioner John Harris, now heading the Democratic ticket for the coming elections. It appeared that this delegation had a spokesman who told the prospective mayor that the delegation was representative of five of the largest Negro organizations in the city and that it favored the proposition of the delegation. The deputy commissioner, identified by the spokesman who, it appeared, had some little aix of his own to be grind) that the conference was reported by the daily papers and at least one of them say fit to comment editorially upon the statements as to the justice of the segregation law. But the representatives of The Negro Chamber of Commerce, realizing that something was amiss, made a later statement to the effect that no discussion of the policies of Commissioner Harris been had by them and that they were in noway responsible for the creation of any such opinion of the general public. In this effect wastes ten of an article which appeared in The News of last Saturday over the signatures of W. E. Clarke and W. K. Fowler, who are indicted with the Negro O chamber of Commerce.

Questioned by detectives at headquarters, Brownsew closed incarcerated. He said he was born in Panama and came to the United States in 1917. He said he enrolled in the Army and was discharged at Camp Dix, December 1918. He served most nearly 70 years and aboard a boat, he declared.

It should prove of definite benefit to thinking members of the race to observe that all of the proposed "city enabling" acts which have been introduced into the Texas legislature have been enacted to deal with segregation of the races. The zoning act, this set giving cities the right to "condemn" property, for purposes of expansion, that enabling the regulation of buildings and all others but that giving to municipalities, the right to vote, the right to vote, the right to the statement of John Ed Surratt, head of the Kessler Plani Commission who is in Austin lobbying with others for the passage of these acts. Said he "Senate Bill 787, House Bill 371, the segregation measure, seems to have all friends and probably will get there as it should for it is badly needed."

According to this statement, the concensus of white opinion is to the effect that it is more necessary to get Negroes into "their places" even in the matter of residence than it is to arrange cities in orderly lines; it is more necessary even than the regulation of the line of buildings so that the streets may be more wide; it is more necessary than the granting of park space in the city; it is more necessary than a fire fide indication of the trend of general thought of the "best friend" of the Negro as a group for in no instance has there been a single dissenting voice raised in protest the passage of this act.

"Io, the poo Indian" may will become "Io, the poor Negro" at least as far as the sentiment of white Texas on the subject is concerned, and it is priring to Negroes. Would it be right to expect anything other than this? Would it be right to expect anything else? Should the members, at least those leaders who have thought much and spoken loudly, of the Interracial movement, been expected to have had at least something to say in their latest step in the matter of creating Negro ghetto?

Negroes are indeed a credulous and pitiable group if they do not readily come to the conclusion that they are their own best friends and certainly in matters of this sort. They have all to gain and nothing to lose by realizing that they have a generation of their children menaced by this sentiment of hegemony of their dislike there is no hope for them as long as they cannot help to choose those who govern them. Realize that there can be no effective Negro lobby against this proposal at Austin now, though there is definite need of such a thing. And only the Democratic Primary has rendered this a fact. The only democratic candidate who will mature and aspire candidate is resulting and will result in more adverse legislation than this if an effort is not made soon to change the status of Negro voters in this slate. Negroes may as well be guided by the sign of the times and cease to fear for what others may think of their fight for their own salvation. In matters like these, voters should not be deprived of the benefit of the most incredulous by the lack of opposition to the segregation measure now being proposed.

Outright it would have been expected that "follow me" work groups would be organized in regard to the matter alone. And now the meeting has moved to a more formal group, would have brought it here.
Business of fallas, we may still face the form of war as our community is conceived in an organized way, we are not worth a war, nor not yet been able to aid the community in any organised way, but we can get ourselves into a frame of mind to corral in a fair portion of the community, spend here, each year four

The new Attorney General of Texas has filed his brief in the Primary case which is now before the Supreme Court at Washington. How the decision will be rendered has yet to be seen. But it is of sufficient moment to warrant the recognition of every Negro in the state. And in case the race as a result of the decision to raise such a fund as will serve to keep the agitation in the hands of such courts. The Express feels that they should have spoken out if their expressed thoughts on the Negro question are to have the amount of weight which they should and if the confidence of Negroes in their willingness to help to see it that justice should be done Negroes in the matter of regulating their places of residence as it is; that it that could be done in the matter of condaining property for parks. It is likely that injustice will be done in the matter of Negro housing as it is that railroads and business houses would suffer in the requisite amount of time. If we are to judge by present conditions, there is more danger; for the present location and environment of the average Negro district in Texas, created without any general law is a discouraging sight. Usually surrounded by swamps and refused land, no sewerage in the majority of cities, and no adequate definite way what is to be expected in time to do when law makes it impossible for them to move elsewhere.
There is really grave reason to question to ability of the masses of who haw lay claim to the ability to feel insult and to appreciate decent treatment to appreciate efforts which are made to help us to reach more self-respecting levels. Results in cases where more than ordinary care is taken for our comfort and convenience do not indicate that we appreciate the gravity of the average situation. Take the results obtained in the placing of a Foll Tax booth in the Egyptian Temple for the convenience of prospective Negro voters who used that booth. Of course that was enough to warrant its having been placed there. But when it is realized that it was placed there primarily for the convenience of our women and those of the race who might not have had opportunity or time to go down town in the crowds and

GOLDEN TEXT — WE ARE LABOR
GROUPS TOUCHING WITH GOD.
An Exposition of the Sunday School
Lesson for Sunday 76, 20, 1997.
For Dr. Ch. W. Alston.
The present lesson offers aalenable opportunities for the discussion of the mission of Christ in the world, and we explain why we sustain it and the mission to each member of our church, which has been carried on, with more than usual warm atmosphere as to whether Christ was the one who was interested, furnishing real food for thought, what ever may be the reason for one thing—one thing is evident to the most critical mind—Christ has exerted a great power on the church, organized believers since the return to the zenith of apocalyptic times, the extension of the kingdoms, the church, the visible church is an anastasis of those who have become involved into an organization to do that, and they may be better informed by us since the church is claimed by us a few, that the church is the building of the twelve disciples by our Lord, and the coming mission was the act. by which Christ definitely tired over the mission, and conquered. It will be noted.

It kept me from being popular; it kept me from seeing to do my good—then I grew to love my magic—until two inches a month for a while, and after that it reached my obscurity and was easy to comb. Men began to pay attention to me and good times were mine at, and good times were mine at, and how happy I am. I wish my experience and try Hi—" If your hair isn't long, straight

Christians are the saving element. Christians are the humanity the one-saving element. It will be argued that there are so many persons who are not human that we do not believe in God at all, and yet they are the embodiment of honor and virtue. Why say that such persons have not been influenced by Christianity-that they out, out many times such persons had God-children, parents and other relatives up. It is difficult to grow up under our Christian institutions and not be influenced by them. It is difficult to influence it is silent-it does not sound a trumpet before

What are the men and women doing for God and humanity whom God has blessed with prosperity who live in the extreme-spendling their habbath in pleasure just as the man mentioned above. They give me means to indulgence. They find one excuse and another for not attending Church-finding it more convenient to criticise than anything else. Things are not run as they should be—or for some imaginary reason, they get into the church and get into theament that the church is whore to society. It seems the righteous man gets into the church and help it in its struggle for greatness from the church are founded on statements made by others—how much does a man know about the church and how to cop on some special occasion?
