A Champion of Justice A Messenger of Hope Founded by W. E. King Volume 34 KILLS SELF; FAMILY A WILLIAM (BABY) HINES, WELL-KNOWN IN DALLAS, WARNED FAMILY AND EMPLOYER OF INTENTION, VISITED MOTHER, RETURNED HOME AND FATALLY SHOT HIMSELF BECAUSE ALLEGED TROUBLES WITH WIFE Claim Family Trouble Caused Despondency According to the statements of his family and friends, William Hines better known to all of his friends and associates as "Baby" Hines, committed suicide on Tuesday morning about 10:30 by placing an automobile pistol to his breast and firing two shots into his body. Neighbors and friends, having heard him state his intention of committing the act, rushed into his room at the report of the pistol and found him lying on his face, the blood streaming from his shirt front, groaning piteously. The ambulance was summoned and he was rushed at once to the sanitarium but the trip was in vain. He died before reaching there. The shooting took place at 3001 Thomas Avenue. According to the statement of the family and friends, Hines had been dependent for several days or ever since his wife signified her intention of leaving him. According to report, he called up the persons for whom he worked on Tuesday morning and told them that he would not be at work any more as he was going to commit suicide. He appears that he then called a service car and was taken over Liberty Street where he visited his mother. Coming home directly from there, he passed through the room where other members of the household were seated and told them that he was about to "end it all." Before they could intercept him, he had entered his room, fired the shot that ended his life. Soon after he had committed the act and before the arrival of the ambulance, the people for whom he worked, allowed over that statement which he made to them just a few minutes before, had reached the home. It appears that both he and his wife had worked for them for a long time and that they both were held in high esteem by them: The body was taken in charge by The Crawford Undertaking Company. CHICAGO, Feb. 16—(ANP) The first in carrying out the program and policy adopted at the national conference of Catholics, Negroes, and Jews, held here recently, was taken Sunday when an auditor, Mr. Robert H. THE DALLAS EXPRESS, DALLAS, TEXAS, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 1927 F; DESPON AFFAIRS IS FAMILY DINING CAR WAITERS HEROES OF DISASTROUS WESTERN WRECK EFFORTS OF POLICE DEPARTMENT AND PROBE OF GRAND JURY PROVE FUTILE IN BOMBING CASE OF LAST FRIDAY. PLACE POLICE GUARDS OVER "TROUBLE" AREA ON CADDO STREET. FRAGMENTS EXAMINED No clue has been found of the firebugs who, last Friday morning, threw a bomb composed of incendiary material on the porch of Mr. Moses Stevenson, in the 2,800 block on Caddo Street. It is believed that the act was the out-come of the racial troubles which have characterized the neighborhood for the past few years. This is the second of such attempts within the past few months. Immediately upon receiving news of the occurrence, members of the police department went out to the scene and gathered fragments of the bomb and took them to the City Hall for examination. An investigation was carried on by the city office officers also but no result. The bomb, which was made from powder, a dynamite and unexploded rags, was hurried up on the front porch of Stevenson's home, at 4:30 o'clock, by firebugs of unknown identity. The bomb exploded, spreading flames over the porch. Stevenson, who happened to be up at the time, dashed water on the blaze and called the fire department. Little damage was done. Stevenson said he heard a noise on the front porch which sounded like the discharge of a fire-cracker. A moment later flames burst out. Seizing a bucket of water, he ran to the porch and found the firebugs. John Durnell and Robert Alexander, policemen, and Rod Gumbrell, assistant fire chief, who were informed of the attempt, conducted an investigation and brought fragments of the bomb to the city hall for examination. Police declare the incindiarum in the neighborhood appears to have resulted from bitter feeling against Negroes who have recently moved into the street. Thursday Attempt The first incendiarum attempt in the neighborhood was made Thursday morning at a vacant house directly across the street From Stevenson's home, police assert. Firemen extinguished the blaze before serious damage was done. For several years litigation has been under way to prevent Negroes from buying or renting property in the vicinity. No one was seen near Stevenson's house Friday morning, but tracks of an automobile which had been driven close to the curb were found. It is believed that the firebug drove put the house and hurled the bomb onto the porch and speeded away. Special officers may be assigned to watch the houses in the block to prevent further incendiarum. Chief Gambrell said Friday morning that had the bomb been thrown earlier in the night a serious fire probably would have resulted because of the high wind. The fact that Stevenson was awake and heard the explosion prevented the fire from getting a good start. A SUGGESTION WHICH MAX WELL BE HEEDED From one of the club women of this city comes a communication which may well be heeded by those who key any chain to inter-communication. If they should do their best to see to it that there is fair and impartial dealing in matters civic with the group, Mrs. S. E. Mitchell indicates in the inter to the club women of Dallas that they should be informed of the purpose of learning how to vote, of hearing the issues of the present platform discussed for their benefit and of deciding just how their ballots would be cast in the coming elections. This first time that This Express has received just such a communication. But the necessity for some interested women has always been just as urgent as it is now. Type of interest that has never been attained but that of wisdom that it be done during the coming weeks in order that the voting of the women of the city be as effective as possible. Why not try it ladies? It is possible the first time, the members of a certain organization of the church, then the man that The Express has received may be still in existence, had hoped that it would be just such a communication. But the man for some such man, ced out of a charitable fund which is gathered yearly in this city, the absurdity of such an idea. Has the Negro Chamber of Commerce a program to engage in a single, abhorent battle with its members the sort of vision which will lead them to three or four meetings, have real resuscitation appear before them, resist the lures of the same enemy, state the lures of the same enemy, indicate the attitudes of the candidates themselves, give them a course, heralded by much loud speaking and much enthusiasm, was characterized by a sort of meandering as to purpose which was far from satisfactory. In reality it did no more than other organizations which have sprung up among them are much to be desired among them. They are absolutely essential in the successful use of the many wives which care among our women in which may not be as well interested in the purpose of their work but did nothing in no substantial way. It sponsored the Community Chest but there was a decided lack of support of the leader of the movement by those who should have been interested in the point of making a synthesis responsible for touching of the many members of the race even in their wives, why not try at doing the running campaise? There is all to gain and nothing to lose by their own profit to themselves and their people. What did an organization of "business men." Several business loyalties have been born and they have died right here in Dallas, for want of the proper sort of conception on the part of those who composed them. They died for the very good reason that those who belonged to them are unable to work for a company. Who died for lack of a vile program. Let us hope that in the beginning of the new year, The Chamber of Commerce will remedy its lack of last year, institute a vile program and work toward it in a way which will commend it to all who may know of it. It is to justify its existence, its procedure must certainly change. The Express hopes for its success for it realizes that the group in Dallas is sadly in need of such an organization. THE MIRROR OF PUBLIC OPINION PLANS COMPLETE FOR ENTERTAINMENT OF NATIONAL EDUCATORS RECEPTION THURSDAY NIGHT AT HIGHT SCHOOL PLANS COMPLETE FOR ENTERTAINMENT OF NATIONAL EDUCATORS RECEPTION THURSDAY NIGHT AT HIGHT SCHOOL SEGREGATION AND BOME THROWING The Caddo Street neighborhood, for a long time the place of more than a little disgrace to whether or not Negroes should be allowed to maintain homes there, was the scene first week of another overt act which, if successful, would have resulted in loss of property or a fire bomb. A fire bomb would also residents only his prompt action kept him from losing his household effects and probably his life and that of his family. The police department sent officers to the scene and the grand jury began an investigation of the occurrence. But as yet, no arrests have been made. The Express always regrets, as does every member of the race, any overt act of this sort and more than that, the occurrence of anything which tends to mar the peaceful occupation of homes by any family of whatever race it may be. For so many years Negroes have experienced the torture of homes in the form of allotment. Are in fine position to feel the hardships of any group similar to themselves. It seldom ever happens that it is called on to extend sympathy to others; for it seldom ever happens that other groups have such experiences in the matter of maintaining decent homes. Others may buy or rent homes in places where there are the ordinary conveniences and live in security. Negroes cannot, except in the rarest of cases. But should that be the case? Should the police be allowed to maintain a white district, though abutting a white district, be the signal for the beginning of such persecutions as have been under gone by the residents of the Caddo Street district? BELATED PRAISE One hundred years after his death, admirers of Robert Bunyan wrote that he was a monument erected to his memory, work and worth. On this monument, Bunyan wrote: "The sacred paraphrase: 'He asked for brand, and you have given him The Express maintains that it should be so and that the commission of every overt act of the sort was the one of last week, should be closely followed by such dullness, which would police officers and the general public as well that if it would be opposed to commit such acts, that it was extremely dangerous. Segregation ordinances in Dallas are more than just "on the books." They operate in no uncertain way and Negro MUST make by their decree. Yet, in this case, even the commission of overt acts is no guarantee of the safety of Negro homes and their persons. It is more than just unfortunate. It is deplorable and the blame is to be laid at the door of Dallas as a whole. Men become desperate when the safety of their homes and their families is no guarantee in any case and at any true that overt acts of the sort acts in retribution when there is no guarantee that there is safety in other sources. Nor could anything else be expected. True, there would be nothing gained in the comings and goings under present conditions, but even that consideration, with the individuals involved, would make little difference. times manifest their own humanity by yielding to pessimism and trivialism, and are working for human well-being. These beliefs advance business practices that they travel constantly the "wife delicacy" and they journey on with their families. They often are distressed by heartbreak; they often are distressed by death; they often are distressed by argument; they often are distressed by The local committee has completed its preparations for the enter date of the convention, and members of the National Education Association and the Dallas meeting February 27-28. WHAT PROGRAM WILL THESE NEW OFFICERS FOLLOW? In addition to the official program, to which all registered students has been made, for a public lecture in 1954d, in the auditorium of the booked "Washington MHS School" will be presented in brief address The Negro Chamber of Commerce net last week and elected a set of officers for the incoming year amid much acclaim and to the accompaniment of a social function that is least more interesting than have been such occasions in the past. It expresses, in the light of the monumental failures of all the organizations organization and maintenance of organizations of a business nature in this city, wonders whether or not The Chamber of Commerce has yet decided upon a program for these new officers now now that they are elected. Somehow this organization lacked lack of the type of conception in this city of the place and function of an organization of this character. It has seemed that the men w.o. have chosen to belong to this type of body had at that time they were to be considered as wards of the general public from that public, the organization was to get its support in the form of another even lesser sort of service which it was to render to some consisting mainly of a meeting or two in which some person speaks on the necessity of having Negroes patronize their own concerns or something to that effect. And The Ex- In the sphere of human activities there is no handiwork, no endeavors, no brain that requires more ingenuity and cleverness, and a ringer and a painter that is particularly an applied to painting on the part of the artist himself. And when God created the earth, he created the brain, the rose, the chrysanthemum the grass, the river, the brook, the tree, the flower, the chrysanthemum the face, this world is full of the beautiful, and the beautiful is so necessebe, and the sculptor is also sculptor and the painter, to speak of this beauty, which would otherwise be hidden, by means of the brain. the foliage, Civilization has been shaped by the environment and features by art. A PITTSBURGH MASS MEETING By Ernest Hine McKinney (PND) Recently I held a meeting in Pittsburgh, college—as usually to case with Negro students to tackle against something. This protest against the policy of the Board of Public Education of not graduating in the public school system, of course, there was the use of a whole web of preachers and other wind-jammer. I doubt just left as just the collection was being raised in a true hustle-style meeting. The offering that the main issue was in danger of being obstructed, to the chairman-responsible for calling the meeting—that all students were attended to in advance of the meeting, words or fragile the whole proceeding—words, words. This matter of colored teachers has been held in the University of Bourg en Marne schools has taken the position that there will be no Negro teachers. To those it have arranged that no-colored girls shall graduate from the public school system, course, this Training School is part of the public school system and To further complicate the situation, these are Norwegians—often men, women, and children—means, Old Pittsburgh, mostly persons who arrived from Virginia from ten to twenty years ago—who are now in school. Then there is another child who wants separate schools, there is the group who don't want any thing and have no particular interest in such trivial things as a dog, a cat, or a toy. The absence of Negro teachers in ggy schools here, is the result of the absence from other places, that are our own theories and by constituents. We don't know much about the absence from other places we have. Our problem in Pittsburgh—as elsewhere—is to understand and analyze the teaching and sympathy of the organized white wealth and mind of a community, so that do the Negro teachers represent. Often the committee represents only the white teachers, and represents tumble-down, shock-improved wage earners, impersonal hodge-pole individuals who know what they want and their wants even if they know what they were.
