COLLING C The Negro newspapers of the state have, we feel, been unfairly charged with being hostile to the work of The Interracial Commission by those who have not followed their expressions through a series of years. They may have been critical of some of the attitudes expressed through the press dispatches but they have consistently played up the accomplishments that organization from time to time and given editorial expressions of commendation for the work which it has done. The journals, and this one in particular, have however, seem fit to call the attention of the Negro members of such bodies to certain opportunities which they have been involved in, and discuss such as come up in the meetings of this body. IMPORTANCE OF THE STOCK-TAKING AND FACT FINDING CONFERENCE TO THE AMERICAN NEGRO BUSINESS MAN Dr. Charles Clinton Pressing Press, 20 North Oceanal Michigan 1230, Dearborn, MI 48620, Dr. Michael D. C. Nifl, 11-12777. The Mara business man should be especially interested in the Broadcasting and West Pacing Conference held in Indianapolis, Indiana, 1-4. For just about two short weeks, the Regs of America have been working on the process of race development and adaptation to the complex life about the group and the media. They have been into the area of race and co-creation and varied through several organizations and installations that has little time been given to a through application of their knowledge and their relationship to each other and the measure and effect of the race. And in the light of a very small occurrence which is reported to have occurred at the recently closed meeting here, the Expressus is doing just a little more of such criticism. It is not that the Negro members were closed meeting too, occasion to thank the white members for their presence and stated that "the Negro members were ready to do anything which they were told to do." Then according to report, the white members countered with the statement that they were there, not to tell the Negro members whiche to do. list to confer with them on their own. The Negro members said that they welcomed the suggestions of the Negro constituents. In just that little incident all of the reasons for the generally expressed criticism of Negro members are found. They do not seem to sense the fact that the problems which they face are, to a large extent, not familiar to the type of white people who are apt to desire to help him to the extent that they are not willing to help him. He is to wait to be told what to do, instead of studying for himself the problems which face him and of being able to make definite contribution to the success of the discussion by some suggestions of his own. He does most of his speaking in a general rather than in a specific way and very self-effort. He is not a teacher, but And that is not all. He refuses to study the facts and to gather them so as to be an authority for the statements which he makes in a general way. And it is literally true that in the majority of cases the white members of these committees have more definite information on the statements and councils. These are the criticisms which the Negro press makes of its own members of such bodies and it makes them, not just to be critical but because it feels that there is merit in the movement and that if it is failing of its highest degree of success in the communities where it operates well in the states, some of the reason for this failure is that the negative sense of values of the Negro members who compose it. What Do You Think of The Ulrickson Plan? Practically every civic group of the other race has expressed itself in regard to the good and bad features of The Uriksen Plan, recently proposed as a guide for the next nine year development of this city. And where such groups have not expressed themselves, they have expressed the desire for more time for a study of it. What are we, who need more development of the sort proposed by this plan, than does any other single group in this city, thinking about it? It may be that there are groups which are studying it and who have not as yet made their attitudes known. The Welfare Board, The Chamber of Commerce, and other like groups may be among them. But the Express, realizing that time is an element in the equation and that there is need of a unity in the study of this proposal such as has It is a well known fact that the swimming pool on The Griggs Park has fallen to a great success as it might have had. The City has nearly 20,000 invested in it, whether it is to undertake the construction or to undertake circumstances in its management has determined. But one thing is certain. The fact that it has not succeeded as largely as was hoped, together with thought of the amount invested, cannot make thinking on the part of governing officials of a sort which will lead them to make the project "go". A few more such instances and there will be the deep reed conviction that there is little reason to spend for Negro benefit because of the fact that it is a little appreciation in a visible way, of the things done. be using raised in the school, such failure were expected.
