THE DALLAS EXPRESS, DALLAS, TEXAS, SATURDAY, JANUARY 28, 1928
She is respiring. Since she earns only ten dollars per week, she can not afford to pay a girl to look after her children. Very often when the mother returns home at night after having worked all day she finds that the little patient has not had one of food at day. Because the other children do not know to give him food unless he ask for it.
The Lottie Auxiliary to the Colored Medical Association gave the baby two quarts of milk a day for one year. Others have remembered the children in different ways but hospitals care is what the children needed.
Dr. McMillan made this charity case special hospital, raig, of four dollars a week. I appealed to six clubs to help keep the baby in the hospital three months. The follow-up clubs commented at once to each pay for one week during January, February and March. The Elks Lodge, Peirceess Art Club, Lion Tamers Club, and Kaba Temple No. 1. Two much praise can not be given the clubs just named. I am thankful for indeed that they are interested in the less fortunate, because who knows but what some of our family do may need help some day.

THE DALLAS EXPRESS
Last November a group of the interated leaders of thought in Texas met in 'Austin and formulated a campaign for the payment of poll tax. They pointed out in the resolutions asking for the united effort of all members of adult age that the school funds of the state profited by the payment and at the same time the civic duty of every person to qualify to vote was discharged.

But there is reason to go a step further in the reasoning and to realize that the sensing of the complete need of uniting the forces of the race in an attempt to come into greater political opportunity is one of the crying needs of the state today. In Texas the Negro is a political orphan. He has no party. And he stands literally between "the devil and the deep seas." The Democratic Party to which he can go only after more court battles and local disturbances still hangs out the "no Negroes allowed" sign; and even the Republican Party under the leadership of the newly elected governor has been forced to stand off in the political weather.

There is no satisfaction in just "voting a ticket" though that is what Negroes have done with more or less regularly ever since being given the ballot. They have "never seemed to come to the point of reading that their very own vote would be taken in the administration of the government of which they are a part hinges on their participation in the councils of political parties from which come all of the office holders. This inability to see and to realize has been responsible for their negative views on the government. Conley was betrayed by his own people and Bill McDonald of our own time, who has become disgusted with the apathy of his contemporaries, were exceptions to the general rule and were prophets without a following worthy of the name. Certainly it is strange that with their willingness and their many numbers of their fellows have been found who have had the vision and the courage to push a political campaign to the point of actually bringing an organization into being. Are we a race of political disgregards and mindless imbeciles to allow this condition to continue to maintain? Will we be able to overcome this problem if our children lost in a wilderness for the help which we already have in the opportunity to qualify for the use of the ballot and the sense which should already be ours of how to use it? This year should witness the passing of the day when we marked political time and allowed to pass the opportunity to participate in the life of living life of our state large enough to command attention.

This is the last week for the payment of poll taxes. It should have happened already that leaders everywhere had called attention to the fact and organized to make this the day it happened. You can do that by this obligation by Negro citizens. Pay your poll tax.

The second week in January has been designated as "Nervous History Week" and it is significant that the school, the college and schools of the country preparations are being made to serve the day with special programs. In the country, there has some, a ways of interest in the record of the school. The examination of the world; and Texas schools along with all others are announcing their programs. It is important that the education is imported for the occasion.

THE SOUTH DEFENDS ITS DISFRANCHISEMENT
D. W. PORTER, M. D.
434 E. Brockett St.
Sherman, Texas
In an impassioned speech in the Senate Monday a southern senator, Mr. Swanson of Virginia, attempted to defend the disfranchishment laws of the south. It was one of the few times that the question has been allowed to come up in that body which has become facies for its silence on things vital to the welfare of the country for which it is supposed to legislate so widely. "The facies of which this speech was a part grew out of the eter," to keep two senators, Smith of Illinois and Vare of Pennsylvania from being closely allowed to have seen by friend in select elections.

Arz was to have been expected, the Senator from Virginia began by calling attention to the "carpet nagger" days in the south when, as he put it, "it was doomed necessary to protect ourselves from a class of votes whose introduction into politics has been most ruinous not only to carve out a new political arena but to contend that the south "had gone no further than as necessary to protect them from a repression of those infanties, social and political, which curried the section in the dark and dismal days of reconstruction" and, in further statements he let it be known that the south not only was not ashamed of its people but that it was not clear that its ensued in the future would be no different from what it had been in the past?

Of course such a speech was to have been expected; and judging from the preliminary skirmishes which have taken place in the efforts to sealt these two senators, the question of whether the unanticipated franchisement of Negroes will not take place. The issue if raised would tear open so many scarcely healed wounds in both parties that in this, an election year, neither party will be able to win.

gives themselves have much to think of as the result of such a speech. First of all the G.O. P. can be made to pay more attention to the question if the leaders in pivotal states will demand that, as a part of the regularly expected civic compensation for the support of the party. It has been said that the great-General of the Party, who is more than a few states. And secondly, there is no reason longer to allow to go unchallenged the statements to the effect that the participation of Negros in state affairs during the reconstruction was a thing to be deplored. Writers of Negro history have discovered many instances of such a situation, and many of the beginnings of the state legislatures; and many of the beginnings of public education and the creation of tax laws had their beginnings in the minds of those apparently simple men. • It is to be remembered that the south of those days was a south of no more than 1000 years ago. • The South of the country looked down upon except by a chosen few. It was a section which he.1 produced few notable men of letters and because of the cheapness of labor, there had grown up an aristocracy of ignorance and prejudice. Nor is it to be reasoned that were such statements literally true the south of today, the south of the country, the south of the government. The south of today is no more like the south of those days than is the Negro of today like his ancestor of that day and recreation; and though there may be many shift with the ideas of that day long past, they along with others more progressive realize that the hundreds of thousands of years ago were the only people in the country who were their own. They, professional men and, all by millions of doce, which they pay in taxes indicate a civic awareness which is not only menonical but which, exactly gives room for the thought that such people can take care of the ballot. Such speeches do the north no good. They indicate that a very serious question is to the people, the people who live as this senator has proven himself must contain some gross defect. Probably a change in the election law would hip. Certainly Negro voters could, tack no worse

The complexion of the Congress's clerical race in the first district is the charged by Mr. Wright's declination. It has been freely predicted that if he entered the race for nominees in the next two elections, he would win, despite the opposition of the local machine.

DALLAS DISTRICT
NOTES A. M. E. CHURCH
CHAS. W. ARISINGTON, P. 4.
Having to rush away to the meeting of the delegations of the 14th Episcopal District to the coming General Conference which met in Houston last week, we did not have time to get in the center of our district, because we have to tell the story of two splendid quarterly meeting this week. At the close of the wonderful meeting at the Greater Bethol when Dr. R. Young and his good people had what is declared one of the greatest quarterly meeting in the history of Bethol, we then turned our face toward Boston. This little city has always borne, the reputation of being one of the most progressive. 1. Texas, and our Church had enjoyed its full share of that spirit of progress. But one has to come in close contact with a people to verify any claim they make, or that is made. For there after our quarterly meeting, for both conference we are prepared to say that all that has been claimed for both the city and church after and more, No smoother quarterly conference could be held as any congregation every board and department was ready when called with written, report requested by the pastor and presiding over such report was accompanied with the amount of finance requested with but one or two exceptions of new organizations which did come up to the full amount. But even made a financial report.
One of the most satisfyingly feature of the whole conference was the high commitment each report
down — it shows how fully the people appreciate it, concerted in a tellings. The pastor review. J. P. Baker, 1st, is a product of Morse Brown University, while his wife was educated in a Presbyterian school, and though they have been married more than twenty-fifteen years one who is a close observer can see that their married life has been completed success. They have three children two boys and a girl, the boys have already made their choices of their life work. Yours, the oldest, has decided to be a doctor, while Paul who held the enviable place as the baby of the family says that he is going to be a procher, the little Miss Thinks with one brother a doctor and another a procher she cries to ford to be a lady of leisure. The Rev. Mr. Baker surely has his work
and wonderful minues may be expected from Denton this year. After a great meeting Sundays during the afternoon of which Rev Mr. Keller of the C. M. B. Church presented a wonderful sermon at the union meeting and his choir did what you call real spiritual singing. The good pastor, Rev. Mr. T. C. Collins of the Baptist church led all the church's in the collection, a victorious day closed with colors flying. The pastor and presiding elder attended the preachery and were meeting in Dallas Monday and returned for the quarterly conference Monday night. About one hundred people were present at the session. Rev. L. Q. H. Joshua received with us to Denton and was present at the quarterly conference and made his usual familiarity talk to the people.
But this was not all, during the time we had spent in Fenton the people had quite freely expressed how pleased they were to welcome the new presiding elder to the district, pleading their uninitiated support. This made him feel good for
"Old Remix," which was made to success, fully predated over the work's years, but when the next name of the conference was over and we were at the point to add four new the whole affair was held up, speech making began and in a few minutes the conference was turned on by the male into a banquet—the ladies of the church without being detected had filled the room with a group of excellent reporters, ample not only for the opening, but for all present. This was a great surprise and with always be remembered as one of the bright spots in our memory God bless the good people of Denton, Total, Yates, for the quarter $61.80
High Tide is reached at 20pm in the January conference last Sunday and Monday's eight-10-a-10 R. Franklin and the members of Smith Chapel put the folder on high that all charches is their class might on well give up the struggle. No Paul was expected mentioned when the hour of shouting came. Dr. Franklin has only been in charge of this work since the last annual conference, but he is making the Franklin Imprint every thing he touches. He is progressing toward what is destined to be the best organizations within us. He has a major presenting day School and High School graduates who are working with regulars in putting over the program. The morning services were well attended and filled with spiritual fervor. The afternoon was the church of the district came together. In larger numbers than has been witnessed at any of the quarterly meetings, President of Dr. J. M.
