What is true of church is in varying degrees of every Negro denomination within the state. Generally speaking there are none free from the suspicion that all is not well with them. Until recently it was not the "proper" way to deal with Negro churches, and least, if they cared for their reputations and had any fears concerning the preschmacks of the irate ministers who usually conceived such critics to all sorts of everlasting punishment. But again and at the risk of all of that sort of criticism, the church has been troubled with the churches is not with the membership but with the sentiment which seemingly actuates its governing MEMBER NATIONAL RESORT PRESS ASSOCIATION. THE DALLAS EXPRESS PUBLISHING CO. (incorporated) DALLAS TEXAS Notice To The Public Any arrowsone reflection upon the character standing or ru- ning in the press will apparently may appear in the columns of THE DALLAS EX- PRESS will be gladly corrected upon the at- tention of the publication. There is little Christian social work done in them. That is, in those in Texas. National Negro Health Week Workers are generally given but little time to deliver their messages. And it is a matter of record that no lectures of a publicly educational nature are ever delivered in the majority of these churches. Social work of various sorts is not a profession that is easily supported by church for support and help. It may be that such procedure is alright and proper but The Express does not think so. It feels rather that Christianity is but the expression in every day life of the belief in the philosophy of Jesus Christ who head the sick, raised the dead, clothed the naked and fed the hungry. A faith without works is dead, and a group which protests such faith and which does not believe in Jesus Christ is not a conception or a change of policy among the leaders of Christian thought in Texas will lead are long to a change in church policy. The biddles and sisters romped home POLITICS, THE PRESENT AND OUR OWN CASE IN TEXAS There is much reason for very careful and thoughtful procedure on the part of Negroes in Texas this year if any of their hopes for an improvement of their political force, the party ranks and the disposition of those in charge of those affairs, namely Mr. Cremer and his associates, is not favorable to their re-admission. It is to be remembered that Mr. Cremer has already declared for Horst Hower a position of minister in the state, and passing large wave of antagonism from the Wurzbach forces and others within the state who have become tired of the "bossism" of the national committeeman. Our contemporary, the Houston Informer, has already joined the party of Harvey-Harmony-Happiness." Probably so. But let us see. It has been one of the pre-dispositions of the Negro voters of the country to decide rather quickly and emotionally as to the best man for support during campaigns. They presume that because they are born in "such and such a place" their consciences are of such, and such a sort and that it naturally will follow that their actions in the offices for which they are striving will be of the same sort. It happens almost as frequently that the pre-convention pronouncements of such things1 as these are wrong and unacceptable, and that the Negro is more expediency rather than his supposed natural learning and conscience. "And so. Negro support goes for naught and the lot of the race is no better. The Express is of the opinion that the first task of the Texas Negro voter is getting back into the party councils. As things now are that cannot be accomplished by joining the Honver forces and Mr. Creager. It cannot be supposed, in the light of the past performances and projections, that the party would be able to overcome for the success of their favorite aspirant would they agree to the re-admission of Negro Republicans into free and untrummed participation in the affairs of the party in the state. And to join that movement now would be to seal again the doom of the race to the position of "political hanger-on" and camp follower. But refused to join that movement by no means. But this is not the case. But this journal feels that just now the race voters have more to gain by a policy of watchful waiting for more light in the matter of a choice of candidates. They should decide rather to cast their lot with the Warzbach forces and go into precinct and county conventions and help to vote the Creager regime completely out of business, send up an uninstructed delegation and participate in the convention and political practices, that they are entitled to recognition in the way in which the party has always operated. Howe may make a good president. So may Lowden and others whose names might be mentioned and whose public policies will stand all sorts of investigation. In fact, The Express does not now attempt to pick a candidate. It will do that later. But its present contention is that the first task should be done first. For Negro Republicans in Texas that task seems to be 50%. The second task, completed candidates may be chosen with the full knowledge that their support will mean litters were recorded in red and black INSTITUTE DEAF DURF AND BLIND TEXAS DEAF DURF AND BLIND largest heart hold smaller hearts to with retiring. J. M. GOLDEN TEXT: Go ye into all the world, and preach gospel to the whole creation. Mark 16:15. Much additional light is thrown of this lesson by a review of the parallel passages given by the other gospel writers, which in many passages given by the other gospel that is here given us by St. Mark. They are found: 'The Lord is my shepherd; I will not lose the events of last lesson when the woman touched the hem of the Master's garment and was made whole from an incurable disease, and the daughter of Jairum was raised from the dead, we are not able to trace all of the events in their proper order, but He restored the sight of the two blind men to Him, and He allowed it to it seem that He made alloster visit to His home in Nazareth and was again rejected by His townsmen. He is now well on toward the close of the second year of His ministry and is yet being thronged with multitudes who are nouns to hear the gaudious words which proceeded out of the mouth of the Lord. The laborers were few—to Him the vast crowds of suffering humanity were as sheep without a shepherd. The need of reaching larger areas than was possible in the circuits He made, with the disciples was clear and He decided to send out special workers. One is deeply impressed with the events of these men are chosen after appending all night in prayer. This should be a shining example to the present-day church and ministry—more and more the inclination is to treat these things lightly—the lasting solemnity which must be the reception and ordination of men into the ministry. A study of the solemnity of the past and in expressing its wordly type of men we are taking in to our ranks. If the alwise Son of God approached the task only after a night spent in prayer how can she treat it as a common place thing and hope the discipline with Him on missions through Galilee, but now they had been with Him long enough to be advanced to independent work if they follow carefully His instructions. He calls the whole body of disciples and from them become apostles. This community of disciples now for the first time came the prelude to their life-long mission which would become more imperative after the Lord had returned to the Father. They had been sufficiently long with their Master not only to catch His spirit but to have learned more of His ministry and to be able to work by His methods. The number twelve was significant to the Jew—their whole history turned on that sacred number. The sons of Jacob were twelve, the tribes of Israel were twelve, the sons of Moses into Canaan were twelve and the sons of Asher were twelve, the memorial stones taken from the Jordan River were twelve, the oxen supporting the brazen laver of Bodom's temple were twelve, the foundation of the heavenly Jerusalem are twelve, the gates to the celestial city are twelve, the gods of Israel were twelve. We have at the beginning of Old Testament history the twelve tribes of Israel, and at the beginning of the New Testament narrative the twelve apostles of the Lamb. Our lesson to day tells of the calling and commission of Jesus, and of his God's hand for the redemption of the whole world. We need only to study the lives of these men to realize what unproviding material Jesus can use in kingdom building. They were uncolored and illiterate, often faint-hearted, dim and even cowardly. As one looks upon this group of men, we see that they were not given to a great purpose—if they will put themselves in His hands. Christ committed to these men the greatest responsibility ever delegated to man on earth, that of ambassadors commissioned from heaven to men on earth, that of teachers commissioned from heaven to things in theology—but they had been with Jesus and learned of Him, which was far better. The time will not come when men can afford to place less stress upon education as a fundamental requirement for ministerial efficiency and be forthmost permanent in the plan of the Abighbath— Jesus gave those men very definite instructions for their work. 1. They were to proceed unencumbered "take nothing for your journey save a staff only; no script, no money, no money in their purse. Jesus wanted that they be able to work in the community they would minister, and on His own unfailing providence. Surely the Father who took note of the sparrow would provide for them. 2. They should be shod with sandals. Shoes were worn only by the well-to-do. The slave went bare foot, the poor were sandals and the rich were shoes. Their notions were two different. This was also a distinction which marked a difference in rank, only those in good circumstances had the extra garment. 4. They were to be careful about their lodging. When they reached a place and a door was open to them they were to remain there until two important reasons made this phase of His instruction. 5. They were to accept such as the family could afford; and next, they were to guard themselves against the Oriental hospitality. When a 'stranger came into the community every family in the community entertained him—they were not to give themselves over to a round of feasting, the mission was to preach the gospel. 5. They were to be relied upon by the community and were rejected they were to leave shaking the dust from their feet. It was a custom among the Pharashes on returning to their land from a Gentile country to shake the dust of that country from their feet on entering the Holy Land. Jesus attaches to this a different meaning—it was a testimony against those who rejected the messengers of the cows. Judgment would surely follow rejection. Their special-work was to preach Christ. He gave them power to work miracles, but the principle purpose of their mission was to preach Christ. That is the first duty of ministers to-day. The word preach comes 112 times in the Bible. The burden of their mass sage was just what it should be to our generation—repent of your sins. ST. JAMES, A. M. E. CHURCH NOTES Rev. James H. Smith, Pastor JENKINS, A. M. E.
