This film caused considerable comment in the dailies of Chicago when Judge Ryan of the Superior Court restrained the Consort Board from interfering with the vide screening in Chicago Judge Daniel Trude of the Mourall Court with this film, of its visual and constructive lesson, that he has sentenced many of the girls who have charged with the production of the film. John 6:255 AN EXPOSITION OF THE SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON FOR SUNDAY, MARCH 11, 1928 BY CHAS. W. ABINGTON The miracle we study in our present lesson is unique in that it is the only one of the thirty-six miracles of Jesus the account of which has been given by all four of the Gospels. It may be accounted for in the fact that it affected many women and men, and Matthew tells us beside the women and children—many writers claim that there were likely quite as many women and men as men, and some contend that there were more, which would make the miracle administer to at least 40,000 women and men. It is the greatest and guildest human touch which can only be fully appreciated at its real value as one study the account given by the four evangelist. It is the same principle as several people describing an event to which all were eye witnesses, and such will be true each writer will tell the story from the apple which made the deepest impression on him. If one would get the richest results from the study of this lesson he must read the four accounts. The Twelve Missionaries Return to Give An Account of Work in the Work In our last lesson we had an account of Jesus ordaining the twelve disciples and sending them forth by two to preach and at the same time delitigating to them power to work miracles. We are not in position to know particularly how Jesus delivered them. We are only partially some weeks. They now return to their headquarters at Capernaum to report to Jesus all flushed with the success that had attended their labors. "Even devils were subject unto them," Jesus said. "And they were found for evil and rest was exceedingly short and at this time he was at the height of His popularity, and the delinquents so great that they did not have time to take food. The world has ever had a place for badly people—in fact three seems to be no place for the pariah. Jesus said that he had been called as His disciples men who were at work, not one man of leftover. Seeing the impossibility of finding time to rest in Capernaum the disciples are fold to go across the lake to the desert that they might have time for rest and conference. Not only were they tired but a doom had been cast over the land to be destroyed. But just over the lake John the Baptist had been executed in prison because he had dared to preach against the sins of those in authority. The Baptist had become the first martyr to the Christian religion. Jesus and his disciples knew that the rulers were doing all in their power to destroy Him and the retirement of the way to be occupied in setting reports on that work, discussing the critical situation which confronted them and get a needed rest. While Jesus has given us an example of keeping busy He has also emphasized the importance of rest periods. How Jesus Accepted Interruptions One among the valuable lessons we get today is the way Jesus met disappointments or the interruptions of His disciples and the screws on the northern corner of the lake to a murdered spain with the getting of the needed rest—but as the people saw them leave on foot, likely keeping their eyes on the Master all the while, many of them ran around the northern end of the lake—the distance being only about six milies, and arrived at the spot ahead of Jesus and His disciples, before Jesus turned His attention to the multitude. It is thought by some that He had time to spend quite a little while with His disciples and when He looked up, saw the multitude and turned his attention to them—while others believe that such crowds preceded them that immediately on landing He was met by the throngs. This seems the most likely. One of the disciples who met Jesus but His plans were interrupted, but He turns attention to the people who impressed Him as wandering about as sheep without a shepherd. Nothing is more helpful in an Eastern country than a flock of sheep with a shepherd—they are exposed to wild beast and would actually starve to death. Jesus does not utter a word of impatience—He begins at once to teach the people the way of life—His great heart of sympathy went out to them and all day they listened to the gracious words which fell from His lips, and he healed all that were afflicted. It is comforting to us to know that Jesus is just the same as His great heart of sympathy. Dealing With a Perplexing Problem As the evening drawn on a real problem confronts the disciples, it is the crowd that had increased all day—it was in the wilderness, the people would finally realize the grazing of hunger and they come to Jesus and ask Him to dismiss them," send them away that they may go into the country round about, and in the villages, and buy themselves bread, for they have nothing to eat, and they are much like ourselves—they figured that the easiest way to get rid of the people was to "send them away!" It was a most natural thing to do. "The church today is growing more towards the well dressed, leaning too much toward the hungry," and "the hungry and shaving multitudes." These disciples made the sagging bluster of leaving Christ out of their calculations, just as we are doing now. Jesus says "They need not depart."
