THE FIGHT OF THE A. M. E. LAYMEN
TEXAS RAILWAY
One of the opening events of the A, M, E. General Conference was the plea of Ira T. Bryant, secretary of the Sunday School Department, for the inclusion of laymen on The Episcopal Committee. He was seconded in his effort by Attorney W. H. C. Brown of Norfolk as well as Bishop Ransome. Severe criticism of the aspirations of the laymen were voiced by several of the bishop, one of whom declared "justice declares that a man be tried by his peers; a bishop is an elder according to rank and a layman is not his peer; whatever you do or say, no layman shall ever try me." Bishop Ransome in his defense of the plea of the laymen declared that "the church belongs to the layman, and not to the bishops, nor to the preachers; since the church is theirs we deny them a part in its govern-

This question will not down in this church nor in any other church soon. It gains supporters every year and there are many among the laymen all over the country who are not aware of the reason for their cognition than is now theirs. Their claims are based upon evidence which is not to be lightly turned aside. It is literally true that Ira Bryant himself, has been forced to literally turn away from the church in scandalous charges because of the inclusion of the Episcopal committee to "whitewash" charges of malfeasance which have come before it. And there is little reason to question the published fact to the effect that the church is not aware of the

well as bishops has worked hardships on the church as such. The inefficient methods of handling funds seems to lead the list of charges of 'inefficiency among the ministry; though in some cases there are even graver charges brought against the leading maurices of the cloak. But in the face of proof, there is little or no remedied now in the hands of laymen.
Thirteen years ago Ben Bess, South Carolina Negro, was convicted of criminal assault and given a 30 year sentence at hard labor. He was narrowly saved from the hands of a mob which sought his life. That his sentence was so "light" was attributable to the fact that it was charged by one of the leading daily papers that a compulsory sentence was imposed. Just recently the woman in the case decided on her death bed to tell the turf and now Ben Bess is free.
There are only twenty-seven interval and weave them into any semblance of a worth- of them and they range in age while pattern. In fact, it is hardly possible for the aver- rorm 16 to 14. Yet they have age Negro man, with all of the advantages of his full years, and they have uninterrupted struggle against the odds which face him, the new Y. M. O. PATRONIZE OUR ADVERTISING
It may seem strange that the Bressay is continually calling the attention of its readers to the importance of a necessity. Proof or this fact is to be found in the advertisements which advertise that week. Probably it is true that there have been many Ben Bess cases in the Southland in which the accused had no such luck. In many instances there is no doubt but that the mob got the luckless victim and later retreatment on the part: "Who perjured me?" "We could," "Good, good, but Ben Bess himself is hardly much better off." Thirteen years out of a man's life is a long time. It is only the unusual man who can take on the threads after such a long

THE CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATES ARE ELECTED
Argument from "Boas" Creager that his method of selecting the congressional delegates of Texas was right has not stopped the Wurzbach forces from invoking the will of the people who are the ones most concerned and of elding a full state of congressional delegates to the national convention which meets in Kansas City. It is well worth while to remark that nearly one-half of the delegation is composed of race men.
Bishop William H. Heard, of Philadelphia, supported Bishop James H. Hearn, of Tennessee, and branded it as "unbearable or unreasonable and destructive." Jones Criticism Ranom. In his address Bishop Jones criticized Bishop Ranom for his "unbearable" attitude toward Tennessee annual conference to elect Mr. Tyrrell, of Tennessee. The "conference was wrong in trying to dictate to the Official Conference, that he be permitted such to be done."
That this action will be uplifted in the national convention is to be presumed. There is little argument worth considering that can be brought against this action on the part of the Wutzsch forces. It is according to the national call. It completely follows out the dictates of the highest Republican court in the land. And more then that.
h. Bishah Ranason said that Bishah Janas' artifact was the reason he had for speaking on the occasion, and that he was joined by Mr. Brown in their information of the lay and in their demand for recognition on this committee, and that they are members, they are entitled to all on any committee, that no歼击机 be deployed, that they do try blobs, for their vote on the report of the Tribal committee which does try blobs, that they do try blobs, that Ranason denied that the conference took such action, and that he
