Sheriff Prevents Lynching and is Given Medal
Bay St. Louis, Miss. June 9 in recognition of his successful stand against a mob bounty on the slaves of former Sheriff Joseph V. Bonemeup was honored by the governor of a handsome bronze medal, awarded by a committee of distinguished officers, who presented the medal on April 17th of last year when, while white men were threatened by a mob number 1100, Sheriff Bonemeup and his crew carried out a massacre in which nine citizens whom he had depicted stood off the mob with shot fire. The medal, a handsome bronze depicting a heroic figure standing on a hill, was supplied by the Southern Commission on Interactive Cooperation and the Commission on John W. Martin of Florida, Hon. Hugh M. Dobley of Georgia, M. J. R. Dobley of Georgia, and Edith of the New Orleans Item, and George B. Dale, Editor of the New Orleans Item.

Miss Viola Dixon, member of senior class, Howard University, for a three-day forfeiture refiled Wednesday evening, May 31, 1988 in Mankato Memorial Hall.
