In both cases the decisions were to the effect that the Democratic Party had a right to prescribe the qualifications of those who compose it and that the state had a right to grant such power to the party by its legislative enactment of last year. In both cases an appeal has been taken, and its expected that the cases will be fought out before the Supreme Court of the United States. The south is filled with one party states. The Democratic Party is supreme in all of them and there is no reason to feel that this condition will materially change for at least another generation. Even with all of the bickering and wrangles which feature the contests in the south from time to time the branches are always heated when it calls that Negroes may be allowed to cast their ballots as equals of Democrats who have always drawn the color. Demagoguery is rife among them. Prudice is strong. Justice can be bent the way of the multitude with startling frequency and ease. There is no need to state that both of these decisions were popular with the rank and file of the Democrats of Texas. things as is ordained in many But why, in a day of so-called freedom and complete it is able to find their way about citizenship of Nearroes, should there be such a continued the neighborhood are operating fight to keep them disfranchised? THE WORKERS PARTY WANTS OUR SUPPORT "The Workers Party has made a bid for the support of the Negro voters of Texas. Presuming that they are decidedly out of countenance as the result of the two decisions of last week, this party in its official organ "The Daily Worker" has seen fit to call for Negro support in the following words: "The answer of the Negro masses should be, and one day will be, to support the party of their o"n classes, the party which will overturn the whole system of capitalist "democracy" in which the exploited masses are "democratized" out of all rights. Some three-quarters of a century ago the United States supreme court made a little decision by which a Negro slave, Dred Scott, was returned to his master. This decision was to stand "for all time." Where is it now? But it took the most terrific class struggle the country had ever seen to overthrow the Dred Scott decision and the system it unheld. Let the Negro masses understand that their present entailment, exploitation and deprivation of civil rights can be upheld by a thousand court, but will come to an end in a social upheaval bigger than that of 1861. dom. Join the party of your class, not the parties of slavers." Of course there will be little attention paid to such sentiments as this coming from those whose actions in the organizations which they compose are by no means calculated to harm the nation. They have realized that they have their own battle to fight out. And they propose to fight it out patiently and persistently through the means provided by the Constitution for that purpose. The bloody shirt has no attraction for them; but real and strict justices do. They do not feel that to fly from one party to the other, were that possible holds for them. They do not feel that nothing other than the ordinary American opportunity of supporting whom they choose at the times that the same power is used by other citizens like themselves. Eventually they will win out. Eventually they will be empowered to vote in any party for the candidate of their choice. Until then such blurs as this from The Workers Party have been ignored. They experience enough of that in the course of their everyday lives. The "freedom" mentioned by the editor of that journal may prove even more doubtful than that which they have said. But ought not they to and to apprehend that it is the Negro mind does not run into such channels? And is not that very fact an argument that such a race can be safely trusted to think sanely on such a commonplace thing as a governor or a sheeriff? THEY BARRED US FROM THE PRIMARIES SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT THE DALLAS EXPRESS, DALLAS, TEXAS, SATURDAY, AUGUST 4, 1926 are for a single denomination only, does it not seem proper that the same spirit of cooperation which operated to make these Church values so high, should carry over into the business and commercial life of the same folks and that the totals there should prove as starting? There is real reason to feel that the totals known, they would not be comparatively as high. Mr. Drice is able to say University Law School Chase, House of Justice honor to Mr. Beckett honor to Mr. Beckett But by far the most potent question which should come into the mind of the thinking person in the light of these figures is, has all of the more than a million dollars spent by this denomination in Texas during the past year been spent on the work of church leaders to answer this question. It raises it for the consideration of those who are attempting to think courageously and efficiently of the conditions which face the race. It is by now a well known fact that Church life in the race is facing a crisis. The general public is demanding of that institution a measure of efficiency which has never been the case before. It is also a fact that all will face the same time goes on. It has now come to the point that it is not just enough to meet in the name of Jehovah. There is actual work in His name to be done; and since it requires dollars and cents, it is expected that good judgment and sound reasoning will be required. He is literally true that the work of the Master demands the mark the handling. It is literally true that the work of that there is in human beings; but it is also true that there is a balance which must be struck between all things and that we live in a temporal world. There are many facts that will study in the figures which tell the story of Negro Church in the United States. We will consider their release a help to the future usefulness of Churches generally. Seow aot ees EXCELSIOR MUTUAL: i BENEELT St i eles a influenced the leaders of the community against them they made their way to Ionian over a well beaten road which led through plains dotted over with wild assess and flocks of sheep. The distance was sixty miles. The actions of the apostles were in keeping with the instructions of Jesus; "When they persecute in this city, flee ye to another." We are also impressed with another truth, that the apostles were in advance to endure hardness as a good soldier. It seems that these missionaries had fully counted the cost, and were ready to die if need be for their Lord—what they endured seems almost beyond human possibility. It should be noted, that the appearance of Paul in this pagan country was by no means the first Hine he and come in to the great centers of heathen civilization and had been familiar with pagan life from his childhood. The following interesting note is given in explanation of the word "pagan," or "nauphier of gods," the word pagan now mean "nauphier of gods," a villager. The gospel was first trailed in cities; and long after cities had become Christianized, the village remained in heathen darkness, until at length identity being confined to clauses and remote districts, the pagan was regarded as the second Babylonian Preach at Ionian. For and against the bishop, thirty and forty miles from acclimation in a wild region. It is inferred that there were very few, if any Jews in Lystra—they seemed not to have had a synagogue and it was necessary for the apatites to hold their services in the market place. It is implied that from the town, the district's sound about heard the gospel and the sudden interruption—a man cripple who had never walked was carried near the place "where Paul preached no doubt for the purpose of begging. He had listened to the apostles tell of the life and work of Jesus, how he healed all manner of diseases and even raised the dead. To this cripple it was said that he had been a man of his faith kindled, Paul, as any good preacher, noted the interest and the elements of saving faith and saw that he had faith to be healed. Paul with a loud voice—no all could hear—he knew what Jesus would do crised "stand on my feet." Feeling the divine energy fill his being and a thirst of joy break in. "He was the leaped and walked." It was a great day for the lame man and a mighty victory for the messengers of the cross. Those wild people became excited when they saw the great miracle. The apostles retired praising God for the evidence of his help, while the people declared that the leaped was the likeness of man. Divine Workabell Attended. The priest of Ubahar and Mercury made plans at once to offer sacrifices to the apostles. The pagans regarded Jupiter as the father of the other gods—it then pummeled the Jupiter as the father of them. Thus pummeled many more impressed their ides of Jupiter, while Mercury was the god that was regarded swift of movement and eloquent of speech. Oxen and garlands were at once provided and plans made to offer sacrifices. When this was made known to the missionaries, as an expression of their horror at such a thing, it was with the greatest effort they prevented the sacrifice being offered them. Paul used the opportunity to tell them about the true God, and as they knew the larger book of nature and the providence which sent them rain and fruitful season. It should be noted here that this attempt of the Lyrians thus honor the apostles was not altogether without its juridice of that age and people bear out the assertion. The first, was the popular apperception, that the gods came PAGE EIGHT PAUL IN A PAGAN COUNTRY at times down in human form among men, both among the learned and ignorant. According to a mythology Jubilee and Mercury already twice had visited the country of Lycaonia, and were expected again to appear at any time, the second, was the more cultivated Greeks and the Romans, and received divine worship. In 29 A. D. Augustus Caesar allowed the legislative assembly of provinces of Asia and Bythema to show divine honor to him—all of their chief cities soon had their emperor's festival. We have seen that the emperor's temple was given for depriving a city of Asia Minor of its position as an independent-commonwealth was its failure, to erect a temple to the god Augustus. When Caligula became emperor he ordered statutes of the gods re-established in the temple, and statute "was set up in the temple built for him which was by order arranged each day in garrisons similar to those he wore. Before this image the people fell down and衣帽ipped. Herod Agrippa desired divine bow and Roman emperors, while Herod Antipas was strenked for wearing a crown and eaten of worms. In the light of these facts it is not strange that the Lyctarians should seek thus to honor those who had done such a wonderful thing among the people, who evidenced the work of a god. Paul Stained and Caligula. We are taught here how fickle and unstable is human passion. The same crowd which had shouted themselves hoarse crying "Hosanna to the Son of David, cry just as loudly crucify him a few hours later. The people who want to offer divine honor to Paul one day stone and cast him out for dead the next. Paul wants Alas and goes the next day on to Derbe. thirty nights away and sees places where he had planted churches—setting them in order and then returned to Aniloch in Syria and the first missionary journey is ended.
