The fine spirit and attainments of Barnabas n. ite] certain that the continued to do a splendid job, with his separation from Paul he falls out of history. Going forth, they first visited the Churches in Syria and Cilicia, this brought Paul to his own home city Tarsus. From there they traveled the road which led through the Tarsus mountains, and through what remained of the city. This time he approached from an opposite direction from which he had made his former visit some years before. He had come from Lyra where he had been stoned for death. Paul was quite happy to find the disciples at Lyra, and he felt full experience at Lyra, he returns there to see how the disciples were getting along; and was overjoyed to find them too strong in the faith. On his visit to Lyra Paul had among his converts a Jewess called Lois and her daughter Eunice, the young woman had a son. The disciples were not mentioned, it is thought by scholars that he died while Timothy was an infant. Timothy had been carefully trained in the Scriptures by his mother and grand mother, and had developed into a fine composer. The father is not mentioned, it is thought by scholars that he died while Timothy was an infant. Timothy had not only developed into manhood, but was an active Christian worker and of good report. Paul seeing such heretic qualities in him expressed a desire to have him accompany him to the place of Jesus. The soul of Timothy responded to the invitation to join the missionaries—knowing too the hardships that he would undergo—for it was in his own town Paul had been stoned for preaching Jesus. That Paul made a happy impression on him in after years, and always speaks of him in the most affectionate terms. Timothy remained with Paul until his marydron in Rome. Paul Sias and Timothy pah their way on visiting other Churches in Phragia and 11. Spiritual Guidance by Closing Doors When the missionaries had visited the Churches already found in Asia Minor, they decided to labor in other great centers - Mysia, and Bythiae-but the Lord in some way prevented them, and there was only one other course open and that was toward Tresus. The plans of the Almighty may often run counter to ours but if we submit to His we shall find that we shall be able to do so. The missionaries of the Aegean Sea just six miles south to the entrance of the famous Helpepoint. It was to this strange city with the mixture of many nations that Paul and his companions now come. When the missionary group arrived at Tresus they were on classic grounds, every foot of which had been rendered poetic by the great poet of the time, and the first person to be joined by Dr. Luke, the writer of the third Gospel, and the Acts. We are not certain that this was the first time that Paul had met Luke - by some it is thought that he met him on his first tour, probably at Andooh in Pidilla. Paul often complained of ill health and it is likely that Luke had been called to Paul for the first time. He was sent to the company, and himself became an evangelist. He became the most valuable of the Gentile converts of the early Church. "Come over to Macedonia and help us." It was while the little company remained at Tours that the Holy Spirit made known to them the mind of God. The call came in the form of a vision in which Paul saw a man of Macedonia pleading for the Gospel light. It had been Macedonia which had sent Alexander to the east, and the people of Macedonia but now the scope is changed—a Prince cradled in Asia; forth a small group of four to consider not only Macedonia but all Europe, and finally all the world. Paul last no time. Lute tells us, after he had seen the scene, that he was taken to Macedonia. Sailing from Tours they came to Semothracia, a mountainous island in the Aegean Sea, and from Neapolis, a total distance of a little less than a hundred miles—they then went a distance of ten miles to Crete and was made famous as the place where Brutus and Cassius contended in one of the bloodiest battles. In The Realm of Religion Dallas Churches Invite YOU to Come to CHURCH SUNDAY tions of history with Octavius and Mark Antony for the freedom of the world, and the founder of the great Roman empire. As an expression of gratitude Phillipi was made a Roman colony—which means that it enjoyed all of the privileges of a citizen in Rome. It seems that the missionaries tarried looking the situation over until the Sabbath day. Among other things they discovered that there was no synogog in the city, but that there was a place of worship out of the city by the river. On Sabbath they went to that place to find only a few women gathered for prayers—among them a woman named Lydia who was a proxitee to the Jewish religion. She was from a city in Asia Minor, in the province of Lydia called Thyatira, famous for its purple-dyeing industry. This shows how God in his was providence had dispersed the Jews among the people. The Jews were Gentiles. Lydia listened attentively to the message of God—the Holy Spirit opening her understanding—she accepted Christ and was baptized with her all her household. Her name comes down to us as the first convert in Europe—not even Paul, Slas, or ever John. It was the conversion of that conversion. It marked the turning point in human history—the shifting of human progress from the east to the west. It marked the beginning of new empires and republics which should forever be impregnated with the Spirit of the Nazareth. Xerxes 1, had been the first king of the Hellenes with an army of 2,500,000 fighting men an attendant numbering even more than the army—it required seven days and nights for it to pass over the bridge of boats, but that haughty monarch was defeated and returned to Asia in disgrace and an exile. The monarch, a one Gentile, has conquered kingdoms; and empires and republics, and is sure to conquer the whole world.
