B. King has been inaugurated as the 54th president of the little New Jersey republic of Liberia. President King and a dispatch has been sent out to universities of the United States, and a dispatch has been sent out to improvements which are being made in that country, and to it with the letter of the rubber concession to the Protacea Company. The company is making millions of American dollars. New York Trade, with the inferior, is being allocated and legal in general. There were those among us in America who looked ahead at challenges that would be expected that another little conference would be to be called of its own nature. The museum was about to collure still another conference, and not that will eventually happen in yet to be learned. But one museum was already being established in public which was practically astonished has been revived by the ad-hoc committee and the resources are now in position to be developed in a way that would be possible in no other. It was a matter of record that before the letting go of its director, its last existing. Its future was by no means assured. Little or no evidence of the death or the original foundation of the museum has been built. No new business concern has been launched. The museum has been built. There in control were concerned only on the maintenance of the museum, much record for the development of the rich resources at their We in American who have learned the value of development of resources and afford to hope for the completion of this project in Illinois which will in future judge well and will be a model for the country under civilization and make possible the strengthening of our society and your plans. in this development however, it is to be hoped that the national or the country it represents that can harness it. they will think carefully and that they will use the natural resources which that time have. It can happen that they will use or Nerissa activity in the world will be developed. How often do we come in contact with those self-self-private quirited citizens who are impelled by a love of their city and of the projects which concern "their people" to find fault with existing conditions, and whether they know what they are doing or not, strive to change the existing order of things to suit what they consider right and proper? Their number is legion and they are found over and again in the course of the life of any city. A word or two in description of them will not be amiss. As a general rule they never are to be found when anything is started. They generally wait until the project is well underway and then they appear with their hammer and begin to knock. They involve "race pride" in all of its splendor. They call upon high heaven to witness their complete unselfishness which they are pleased to compare with "gratifying spirit of those who whom they criticize. And it is generally found in the last analysis that they have had some "axe to grind" or that the project has passed by some "pet" scheme of theirs and therefore they feel called upon to "stop the clock." They generally appear to "the people through mass meetings" which meet but not mass. They push resolutions galore and dismiss satisfied that they have done their "duty and have helped to "save the race." Few constructive things can be traced back to them. Few move. ments have seen helped to competition because or their efforts. They generally talk more than they do and among them more real grant is traceable than among any other class. To carry their points they stop at nothing. Lies are the truth to them. A reputation is just another to be turned about and to be played with and dictates to them. They court no responsibility and it is placed upon them they generally recuse the project in hand by deserting it for something else which offers more space for their hammers. They are nothing other than "culminatory" whose god is chase and whose shrine is desirable. What should be done about them? They should be allowed to run the is way until their own stupidity chooses to death. The general public should be guided by some rather than by sentiment in the consideration of their projects and they will die of their own accord. They are of a few days of life only. Their how is the worst part of them and the things which they choose to knock are helped than hurt. They are like the side show to the real circus and there is the tent that comes down first. Refuse to take them seriously. They know not what they do. They are like old men in their dotage who speak of that concerning which they think but little. They are doing the best that they know. Puff them by all attention to them. Pray for them and immediately dismiss them from consideration. Little boys play at being grown up. Of course such parts are these self-styled "public spilled citizens." Really they know not what they do. THE COURAGE OF AL SMITH There can be no doubt that much of the prejudice against Al Smith which is to be found in the south has its source in his religion and his stand on prohibition. But it is true as well that his strength and the compelling force of his character find expression in his attitudes on these two questions or issues. A Catholic has never been president of this country. Probably one never will. But the fact that a Catholic car no far over-come the almost primate prejudice of the party of Governor Smith and win the nomination of his party is well, worthy of more than passing notice. Few men in public life ever overcome the fear of offering their constituents. Evidently Al Smith has no such fear. That is evidenced by his telephone to party leaders following his nomination at the Houston convention. He is for the modification of the Voluntad set, an attitude which is privately shared by the majority of those whose public attitude is just the reverse of the one publicly states. He is not a politician to be held to the law. Smith's behavior takes courage. It has no parallel in what America has become accustomed to under the name of political expediency. He is a Catholic and is proud of the fact. He states and compels the country to think in terms of practical religious toleration instead of the bigotry in the name of God which has for so long been practised. His life will be found in time to come to have been a distinct contribution toward the political purging of this country. He stands as a high spot in an otherwise large expanse of commonplace political striven. He can well point the war to many who will come after him in the political arena. Catholics may more easily strive for place as the result of his public life. Men of real courage may more easily express themselves sincerely on all questions of public policy with which they have to deal. He is really showing the way to real public usefulness by his courage and sincerity. And even though the Empress is dedicated to the support of the Republican party in this campaign, it can see more than passing good in the Democratic nominee. And as conditions now stand, it feels that Al Smith's courage and manniness constitute good reason for change to race voters who have become tired of camouflage and "pussy-footing on real issues in the Republican party. THEY OBJECT TO UNCLE TOM'S CABIN The Morning News states that group of old confederate soldiers in a meeting recently became incensed at the thought of having a screen version of "Unele Tom's Cabin" shown in a local theatre. Their voices were raised in no uncertain terms at what they were pleased to call the marring of the south of their day. They probably went so far as to assert that there were no Simon Legrees and that Negro slaves were treated as well as they are now. In other words, they objected to having the scenes of those days recreated for the benefit of the young of the present. This scribe may agree with them that it would be rather unfortunate for some of the ideals which members of the older south have for the present generation were that picture shown in Dallas and over the south generally. *R* Some of us who are the children of slaves and who know first hand of the conditions as they really were cannot be sure that the education of the present day younger generation will be complete without a fuller knowledge of some of the more obscure facts concerning those by gone days. We have seen the scars of the overseas wilps on the backs of our parents. We have helped to pay the medicine bills for treatment of ill suffered by our parents in those days of chattel slavery. We now the names of those families who were characterized by their cruelty to slaves and we have seen old plantations the approximate burial places of some of our forebears who were whipped in death because illness prevented them from coming up to the overseas idea of a full day's work. And we are not sure but that these same facts would help the young white south into a fuller knowledge of its duty toward a group whose past is filled with more Simon Legrees than with little Evas. ACTS 16:16-40 AN EXPOSITION OF THE SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON FOR SUNDAY, AUGUST 26. Golden Text—Rejoice in the Lord Always: Again I say rejoice, Phil. 4:14 Following the conversation of Lydia and her household Paul and his companions continued prescribing in different parts of Philipp, and went daily to the place of prayer by the river side where an angel heard the gospel. But this orderly course of procedure was not to continue indefinitely—it seems that such was never the lot of Paul very long at a time. His presaching and work always invited opposition. 1. The Pythoness Healed. Up to this time Paul and his companions had met opposition in their misadventy labor principally from the envious, followed them from place to place to make trouble—but now they are brought in direct contact with the heathen world and must contend with persecution from a new angle. In the city there was a poor slave girl afflicted with the spirit of sooth-saying. We do not know the extent of this affliction for formal reasons, but from the narrative, that she was exceptionally successful in gratifying the superstitious inclinations of the people. She struck facts often enough to give her a reputation which attracted a group of conscienceless men who formed a joint stock company. It was then that she met upon her that she divined. One reads this narrative he is impressed with the sameness of human nature in every age of the world. Thousands of men and women today are making fat profits from the virtuous dead, and which is not good for the lives of innocent girl victims. As Paul and his friends went daily to the place of prayer by the river, this unfortunate girl followed them crying, "these are the servants of the most high God, which show us into the way of salvation." Her condition grieved Paul, and turning to her commanded the evil spirit to come out of her hearing her crying, and she joy in the new life she had found. We are not certain that Paul considered the far reaching result of the miracle—if so he was fully willing to take the consequences. II—The Apostles Mobbed and Cast Into Prison. The slave owners of the girl saw the cure in a very different light from the Christian viewpoint—a soul saved from the powers of sin and darkness—from her fortune-telling—she was a commercial asset—productive property, and with the passing of her power of divination their property had lost its market value. "Rear gain was their loss; the girl had gained her mind, but they had lost their money, and with them the soul had no purpose." These men had no interest in Paul and his companions—they allowed them to go from place to place with all freedom teaching and healing, but now they have interfered with their business and destroyed their source of income and they must not only suffer, but suffer severely. They sailed Paul and Siles, they did not marry Mark and Luke—due to the fact that Siles and Mark were not married to the way of salvation and rushed them into the market place, which was the place where they held court, as well as the most popular meeting place for the local population and for strangers. They are brought before the magistrates and are made against them. First, they were "Jews," which made them self-inflicted the prejudice against the Jews was very prevalent. They had just been expelled from Rome by the degree of the emperor and were in great disfavor throughout the empire. Racial hatred was as strong as the hatred of the Jews. The second charge was "they exceedingly trouble our city." They are insurrectionist. This was the personal element and the real cause of all the trouble—the they had destroyed their hope of gain, and third, set forth customs that would for us to receive, burging Romans" this was serious as it created the danger of conflict with the Romans. place where they held court, as well as the most popular meeting place for the local population, and for those who are brought before the magistrates and three serious offenders. First, they were "Jews," which was almost a crime in itself—the prejudice against the Jews was very prevalent. They had just been expelled from Rome by the degree of the emperor, and were in great disfavor throughout the empire. Israel hatred was as strong as the hatred of the Jews, and the second charge was "they exceedingly trouble our city." They are insurrectionist. This was the personal element and the real cause of all the trouble—the they had destroyed their hope of gain, and third," set forth customs which it is not lawful for us to receive, being Romans. It was created the danger of conflict with the Romans. This was quite a skillful combination of the political, business, social and religious interest of the city. The people of the community took their view of the matter—the accusers never mentioned the good thing the apologists had done, but only that they could be indicted, and immediately formed, they wait for no answer to the charges—like our American mobs and lynchings. The magistrates in violation of the Roman law ordered them striped and encouraged, which was instantly done—under penalty—but with the exception of what was no limit—this was left to the pleasure of the officer or the wizard could enquire. After hour seven beating they were turned over to the mouth with instructions to keep them safe. Receiving such an order, he cast them into the inner stock. The stock, made of flesh and feet in the stock. The stock, wrists and neck—but in this case the jalfer fastened only the feet in the stocks. It is hard to picture a condition of greater suffering that in which God’s servants are now placed. III. A moment of beating. Brushed, bleeding and sore, shut in that foul cell, unable to move their feet, Paul and Silas were not cast down. Their Master had given them voices and they used them mightily singing the Psalms of their saints—and instead of grouns there were heard play—because they knew they were suffering for Jesus sake. The darkness of the night, their suffering bodies and their wretched surroundings could not shut out the love of Christ which passes all understanding. Other strange sounds which seem to grip them. This was a wonderful victory for the Holy Spirit—you cannot stop the mouth of God’s true誓言 by beating them and casting them into prison. While this mild prayer meeting was in progress the crowd was awoken. That is a religious privilege so many overlook—but it is the very highest ideal of Christian fortitude and development. When the midpoint of praise the earthquake shook came in answer to prayer, the foundation of the prison was shaken and the doors flew open and every man's bonds were loosed. The jailer aroused out of his sleep and seeing the prison doors opened supposed that the prisoner was free. The prisoner was rather than be executed. It was in this city that the prisoner was crucified suicide after they had been defeated by Augustus and Mark Antony. Paul was not excited he knew the power of power and cried, "To do thou no harm we are all here." The jailer called for a light and went and all the prisoners were taken and he was saved! Paul told him about Jesus mighty to save and he was converted at the same hour. The Philippian jail was turned by prayer into a Christian Church. You cannot stop the growth of the thodom by putting God's ministers in prison. It was dug deep and the prisoners were taken their stripes and set food before them and all his men were morning the rulers sent word to let the men go, but Paul would not have it so—he asserted his Roman citizenship and forced these naughty rulers to humble themselves.
