Haines St. Greensboro It seems as if this campaign is to go down in history as one in which prodigies will play a large part in the influencing of votes in one direction and another. Both parties are now employing it and the material which is calculated to arouse it with an abandon which bids fur to reduce the campaign to one of hatred rather than one of common sense and memorotional thinking. Look for a moment at the issues of religion, the Negro, the attitude of the Democratic candidate toward non-Catholic, toward Negroes, the attitude of Republicans who tell of the attitude of the Democrats for Negroes, the social equality bigaboo which is being aroused afresh to strike fear at the weakening Democrats, and all of the other twaddle that is creeping into "whispering campaigns" and printed literature. Democrats tell their weakening brethren that Harbor Herbert is a believer in social equality and that the Republican machine is designed to the killing of Negroes to the "level" of being safer rather than to the conditions of being safe and same lines. The Republicans bounded the statement of Democrats to the effect that Al Smith is not a believer in fairness to the Negro and that if elected he will give to them only such positions as jailers, etc. Such political strategy may be good as politics goes but the effect on the American body in general demoralizing and harmful. Sense rather than sentiment is so badly needed in all sections of this country that there is need for its cultivation on all occasions. In fact American is well aware of the need to be more judicious in judging political issues. True Fifty talk of farm relief, prohibition, etc, but that is but a sideline to the more generally heard arguments concerning prejudice producing things. Both men may be good presidential timber. Enough sensible men are supporting them both to make that generally acknowledged. But it is a rather pivable argument in a general sense. It should be discouraged. It should be discouraged. FOREIGN IDEAS AND LOCAL OPPORTUNITY Had there been no contact between nations all of the civilization which we now call good would have been impossible. Enlightenment as we now know it and the civilization of which we so often boast is by the sum total of the contributions of all of the peoples of the earth who have had contact with each other. The Great Wall of China has disappeared and "the open door" has taken its place. Radio and electric devices may now be found in the most out of the way places on the earth because of the realization by all progressive men of the need of contact. ROCKEPcLLER GOES PARTNER IN HIS RENEFACTIONS First Harlem is housed by the specimen of modern housing instituted for Negroes by the philharmonicist John D. B. Rockefeller and now last Monday morning is a visit to Harlem with the friendly help and investment. It is the first Negro bank to open its doors in Harlem. B. J. Harper is one of the directors. It is to be presented the opportunity to see a section of constructive help to the race were inspired by the study of the conditions of Harlem coupled with the new well known desire of that family to make durable contributions to the program of their life. Many chitalthropists have done good things for the race. Many benefactionists have come as the result of Americans in Negro. But it is doubtful if any of them have had an far riching possibility as do them two ventures in Marlton, N.J., where the majority of the average legal property of that section has been broken. Rentals have been all, on proportion to the character of honor to be had. Crowding has been a problem in the section and there have no dwives, evidently, on the part of owners to say in it that that property was made deserved for life in the community. He has erected modern apartment which are available as rentals. 4v THE DALLAS EXPRESS, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1928 MILITARY MILITARY And in this contact it has been noticeable that neither the two parties has leas. For every new device which has been brought into a country other idea has been taken out and made out of use. For every contribution to society the donor has been paid in proportion as society has reaped the benefit. And it is the spirit of desire for the new and advantageous which prompts men to travel, to explore and to seek new contacts. Only foolish men now shupe the door to any idea or innovation. Only those of selfish souls seek to limit the opportunities of others. Only those of little ability will feel that their opportunities of progress and production are limited by the opportunity offered others to bring their ideas into competition with them. Cities and groups as well as individuals need to learn this lesson well. Particularly Our group which is still in the stage of feeling that to grant opportunity to others limits opportunity to their own. And yet it is remarkably noticeable that they make little use of their own opportunities. Recently a stranger came into Dallas and successfully carried on a choir contest. He made some money but he spent some money in order to make what he did. He believed in his enterprises to the extent of $1500. He was entitled to profit. Following his departure it was remarked on many occasions that "a stranger has come into Dallas and taken our money out. Why couldn't some of us have thought to do that." And the tendency seems now to seek to limit such ventures by others in future because of the idea that to permit such ventures local opportunity That idea is false. At any time during the past fifty years a Dallas group could have done the same thing and made even more money. But the idea was lacking. Even now there are literally thousands of projects which local men could foster to make money and confer good on their community but they either lack ideas or they lack the nerve to put in operation the things in which they believe. They could do such things, Dallas would profit in ways not possible offroad. From that choir contest many choirs received money for new music which would otherwise never have been purchased. Opportunity to see the full array of Dallas talent was given by the spectacle and now the singing ability of many persons in this city in well known where before they were nameless. Radio audiences heard singers who would never be named. Radio audiences saw white people who white people on en masse an array of beautiful choirs which sang as well as they looked. On the whole the venture was profitable to the city. To think in terms of limiting such ventures in future time because of the lessened opportunity for local talent is to admit inability to compete in an open field. Good sportmen take all comers. Good musicians take all comers. Good development to local talent will come, not as opportunity for outsiders to compete is limited, but as the gates are thrown wide and as that talent seeks to measure arms with all comers and wins by sheer force of brain and greater skill. If local talent is good enough it will shine and make its presence in stature all of the protection in the world will not amount to a glittering mound glitter under all conditions but imitations must have the help of darkened backgrounds. General Motors in its Monday evening radio broadcast featured Rosamond Johnson, noted Negro composer, and a group of his songs. Literally millions of Americans are now inhabitants of foreign countries enjoyed the melodies. There was not a hint of color in them. Just another proof of the fact that good things last and that art knows no color line. Those who would trade America for other countries of which they have read and imbred need only to think of the progrue of last Saturday in Russia and in other countries of cold blood and their passions ripped from them. America has its faults. Grown ones they are. But even at its worst it is slightly better than some others. cling upon which he stood.
