Ahington. Leaving Paul a present at Caesarea as coming of his accusers down from Jerusalem to applaud against him before the governor, we turn to day to the outstanding secret of Paul's wonderful life and power—to find what he did to get his strength and superhuman endurance. All great power spring from some unseen source. There is an enormous heat in the depth of the sun out of which he was born. Paul was a restless man, resting on hones that match their majestic weight and height, and the gigantic Rudbeck has its giant roots that produced and sustained a traveling trunk. In like manner, a great man must have a deep base of substurents roots upon which to build a great and useful life. Paul was a master of the arts, and Booker T. Washington aces by no means accidental—that does not give out of thin and impoverished bulk—but has sources of secret power hidden away back in distant agnostics—properly praying mothers who gave them to God before they were born. Paul was a master of the arts, much that contributed to his wonderful life of service were hidden coaching far back in the history of ancient Israel. The great Apesthe's first recorded words upon seeing the Lord's way to Damascus was in reality a prayer for guidance: "Lord what will have we me to do?" He realised that he had been misled in his mid-race to crush out what he regarded as a most damaging heredry to lead his people away from the law of Moses and the traditions of the faith. He realised that his first voluntary action after his experience of the Damascus road was an act of prayer. His written that as he lay in the house in the street called weight and Damascus recovering from the physical and mental experience at his convention that the Lord told the man Maximus to go and lay his head on him for "bebelhe prayers." He answered: "I will be your man." He was a man of prayer—he firmly believed in God and was eager to please him. When the great crisis came in his life on his way to Damascus his first thought was to bring his conscience and guilty soul to God in the attitude of humble supplication for relief. Thus every thirst in Paul's experience led him to study the nature and Too often we get the idea that prayer is only intended to get from God just such things as we desire—only a bringing process—but faith has shown to "that the first great element in prayer to thankgiving." He makes this first regardless of circumstances when he asks for help. He asks for help when we are in need of something, and as soon as the conditions have pinned it distressed us, we cease. Paul says we should pray without ceasing. A landlord once had a tenant who was to give a part of the product of his farm for its rent. But he was careless about the sale, and at the close of the year, he came bringing us the product. How like that we are in our dealings with our Heavenly Father. When we have care and sorrow, and worries and afflictions and the like, we unload, thibn all on God—but when we have joys and happiness we make no effort to share them with Him—we keep for ourselves. I heard of a member of a certain church of whom the new minister was always forewarned: "If he hews you, you will be punished." God is very quicky. "God is good to take our sacks of burbs and thibnies—in fact He invites us to bring them—but we should carry him the sack of golden grain and the beautiful roses He puts into our lives. PAUL BELIEVED THAT MUTUAL HELP COULD BE DERIVED FROM UNITED PRAYER He thought of prayer as a great co-operative relationship. If Corr. 111, he says: "We also helping together by prayer for us, that the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many person thanks may be given by many on our ears. He argues that those upon whom we pray should be given by us." The medium of numble grateful prayer was it ever true in planning his own life, he counted upon the prayers of his friends as the definite factor. Paul, 119-30, we read: "For I know that this shall be the greatest blessing of all mankind to Jesus Christ." According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing shall I be adamant, but that with all boldness, as always now Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death." His constant appeal was "pray for me." Paul was always influenced over the world and that He is an infinite personality to whom we may approach in humility of heart as unto a real father in whom we have confidence that he cares for us. Such faith in always attended with results. Such men never want to think of the future. He was always never conceive of prayer as an abstraction appeal for temporary circumstances, but that it is a fixed factor in God's great program—the open door of the finite child to an Infinite Father—the ladder on which we may ascend an abstraction from the tumult and endure. He was always where the songs of all the sinless sweep across the crystal sea. PRAYER IS AN UNFAILING ELEMENT IN EVERY AGE Paul studied his prayers - he clobbed them in language which truly expressed the thought - such passages as Ephesius lt chapter, the last tn verse. When it is offered in faith it will get results. That does not always mean that we get just what we ask for - God does not always give us what we want. That is of any considerable experience who have not been denied the specific thing for which they prayed, and felt erratically forsaken because they did not get it, but when they had gotten some several years away from the time when their prayer was offered they did not get it, and felt erratically forsaken. God knows that it was not best that they have their denied and in due time made it to them. It will be recalled that Paul ends cannot pray that the thorn might be take out of his flesh, and was denied his petition, for some time no answer came, that it did come. Christ told him that "his grave was yourself, and he was given his petition, for some time no answer came, that he should be given grace equal to its exacting demands—that is all that any child of the great God should request. PAUL'S PRAYER LIFE INTERCESSORY Paul's prayer which we have preserved to us write, much more of an intercessory nature than that of patience - Paul was sent to pray with others and of others. At Miletus after his affectionate address was concluded, he "should down and prayed with them." PAGE EIGHT In The Realm of Religion Dallas Churches Inside YOU to Come to CHURCH SUNDAY PAUL A MAN OF PRAYER all his interest in his churches was a constant source of prayer for them. In our lesson, to the Romans, to the Ephesians, and to the Thessalonians he writes of this interest in affectionate and remeaning terms. We get a wonderful lesson in the thought that his prayer was never centered around what he desired, but quite an much around those things which he had already received from God both for himself and his friends. "I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all." "I cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers." "We give thanks for you always for you all"—are familiar phrases in the writings of the Bible. "I thank God for the lesson on prayer at this Thanksgiving season. Longshoremen were all around, sit- ting on trucks eating lunch. As the Kid passed old George Harding, I could see George telling him the revenue man was behind him. Anyone could tell the Kid was loaded now. He wasn't used to packing the stuff, and with the excitement and all the two bottles in his front over- all's bottle were giving him frothing. The revenue man called out: "Hey there, young fellow." The Kid didn't turn around, but kept on walking at an angle toward the east gate, just so he could see the revenue man over his shoulder. The revenue man speeded up a bit to overtake the Kid. The Kid speeded up also. The revenue man bent down and started to run and the Kid hit out. Straight for the big east gate he flew. Then I saw the other revenue man I had been trying to locate. I found behind a box car near the gate he jumped. The Kid saw him too, and saw he was trapped. He saw in again at an angle toward the ship, and I wondered if he were going to jump overboard. I heard the revenue man say "Stop or I'll shoot." Then I saw where the Kid was heading for a little gate, just on the edge of the pier, which opened out into a flat waste where a big pile of oil barrels was burning. In the meantime the Kid had got the two bottles out of his front overalls' pockets. Down on the pier they went—overwhelmed. The Kid made the gate with the revenue man about ten yards behind. Straight for the long pile of burning barrels he flew. I didn't see how he was going to get away, for one end of the fire ran right down to the bdy and the other into a sort of lagoon that made that stretch of waste land a long peninsula lying parallel to the bay. The revenge man saw they had the Kid trapped and separated, one running to the lake. The pile of burning barrels, to head the Kid off whichever way he went. Straight through the fire went the Kid. The pile of barrels was about two hundred feet long and twenty-feet wide, and the Kid went through twenty feet of fire without looking around. It took the revenue men so much by surprise--that they both stopped, then rushed to the place where the Kid went through, expecting, I guess, to find him in the fire, but the Kid had gone through and with undiminished speed kept on to the end of the mall, creased the lagoon on a little foot bridge there and was hitting it for the tall timbers. He was waiting for me at Dusty's when I got there, about 3 o'clock. He looked pretty sad, all hunched up over a glass of near beer which he had ordered and not even tasted. "Well, Doc," he said with a little weak smile, "you did all you could for me and it wasn't your fault I flunked and gummed up the works. I guess Jack was right; I'm only a kid. Must have had myself over-rated." "Tellme, Kid!" I asked, "why did you hit the gangway before Tom's whistle? Did you get scared of the purser?" "Was that the purser, Doc? I didn't know who he was and I admit he made me a little uneasy, but I would have been dodging him till yet if I hadn't heard somebody whistle 'River Shannon.' Honest, Doc; you know I wouldn't be to you." I didn't believe the Kid was lying. Harry had sworn he also heard the whistle. Thumb wasn't the only Irish doredev in Seattle and it was our fault for picking such a common tune. Anyhow the Kid looked so broken up and forlorn I didn't have the heart to keep the news from him any longer, so I told him the rest of the story. Charley wasn't the leader of our gang by accident. He could think fast and act quickly. ILLUSTRATED FEATURE SECTION When he saw the two revenue men chase the Kid through the gate and head toward the fire he yelled: 'Back to the cabin, gang!' Back we went, grabbed the rest of the sails of booze and crashed the gagway. The revenue men turned back after the Kid made his getaway just as Harry let in the clutch and the Studebaker headed for the club with ten cases of Sam Clay less the Kid's load. Jack had collected, we had made the divvy of the profits, and I gave the Kid his share as a full-fledged member of the gang. (Watch for the next installment. Read about the thrilling adventures in the liquor traffic.) MRS. SARAH JOHNSON of LOUISVILLE writes in an follows: "Dear Sir: Will you please tell me what this dream means? It seems that I saw many stars falling from the heavens. The sky appeared to be clear and cloudless, and the stars fell very rapidly. Sarah Johnson. This is quite an unusual dream. Had Mrs. Johnson dreamed of the falling of only one star, that would have meant that some person of very great prominence in the nation is very shortly to die. To dream of the falling of many stars, however, would seem to point to some very great social or political commotion. I do not know whether or not Mrs. Johnson is in politics, but I am sure she must be interested in politics. Either that or she takes a keen interest in social affairs. I am not sure that he interest, I am convinced that there is going to be considerable upheaval therein within a very short time. Ever since the birth of mankind human beings have been interested in the heavens and have made a study of the stars. Astronomers, Assyrians, Babylonians, Antes and Incas, all had astronomical observatories in which trained men, usually priests, studied the meaning of the stars and the laws of their rotation. Hence, you see that interest in the stars is of great antiquity. Astronomy indicates a change in social or political affairs. From the Editor's Desk w-y-p FAITH ABOUT a month ago a Ten Billion Dollar dinner was held in New York City. Of course, the dinner did not cost that much, but it received its name from the fact that the combined wealth of the principal guests of honor was Ten Billion Dollars. There were at that dinner, Henry Ford, the automobile king; Eastman, the kodak king; Firestone, the rubber king; Schwab, the steel king; Lipton, the ten king; and several other men of fabulous wealth. How did these men get their money? Through the application of advertising and organization. But for that intelligence or organization, it would not have been possible for them to have accumulated so much money without faith in what they had to sell. Because they had faith in their products, they spent millions and millions of dollars advertising them. For instance, when Henry Ford put out his latest model of automobile, he spent over a half-million dollars in full-page advertisements in the principal newspapers of the country. Because he had faith in his own product, people also had faith in it. Thousands and thousands of cars were sold before they were even made. Faith did it. The reading public has faith in the large advertisers. The large advertiser spending huge sums every day must have faith and confidence in what he is selling in order to inspire that same faith and confidence in those who will buy his products. Modern business is erected upon faith, and large advertisements are a pretty good barometer of the faith that a man places in his goods. The buyer can depend upon it that the goods offered by the large advertiser are all that they are claimed to be. APEX BLUES VOCALION RECORD #1207 APEX HERE he is again! The sensation of, Chicago!
