From Acta 26:22 we learn that Paul finally triumphed over his false accusers and was declared to be neither worthy of death nor bonds by Lycian, Felx, Festus and Agrippa—it only remained for him to be transported to Rome to appear before the Roman court. Roman and appealed his case. Paul had long experienced an attraction for Rome. It is not certain just when and with what object he had in view when the Apostle first conceived the desire to see the imperial city—but if this impulse seized him before his conversion to Christianity, the first step in his conversion to Christ. Rome was at the time the metropolis of the world, bore the proud name of the "Eternal City", with a population of two million souls. It occupied a circuit of a little more than twelve miles into which this mass of humanity was crowded. "All roads ran to its center, all power radiate from its throne, and around its hub revolved the mighty city." In that soothing mass of humanity were found all the varied conditions of social contracts represented one finds in our great modern cities. From its marble Forum can gazed in every direction miles of splendid public buildings, fashionable boulevards, costly palaces, government temples, triumphal arches, and the city which had flowed into it From every part of the known world—while on the other hand in the very heart of this splendor were the most shocking exhibitions of equal, poverty and poverty. Perhaps in all the world was not to be found such painful lines of separation between luxury and the oppressive scale and the institution of slavery, further widened the wedge of social relations in Rome. It is said to have had one million citizens, a group of senators hardly large enough to compose a special class, ten thousand knights, who filled for the most part of the public offices, fifteen thousand golds and all the rest of its vest to which Philip went to search Christ. All of them idea of the home to which Paul went The First Lap of the Journey from Caesarea to Rome. After spending a little more than two years a prisoner at Caesarea Lap is turned over by Governor Pestus to a Roman centurian named Julius, who many years later took the beloved physician, Aristarchus, and probably Timothy were Paul's companions in travel. Julius was a very fine type of Roman official and was most considerate of Paul from the beginning. It is likely that a Friendship and mutual admiration had sprung up between them, which now finds opportunity for fuller expression. It will become clearer to us when we consider the very crude means of navigation in Paul's day. There were only a few ships, which were purely at the mercy of the winds and oargen which fall, perhaps the last of October. It became necessary for ships on long voyages to put in at a convenient port and winter. Usually in March they might again resume their voyage. The ship on which Pullus started to Rome was on going to ports along the coast of the Mediterranean, and it was permitted Paul to go ashore and visit friends and refresh himself. From Sidon they turned northwest, sailed past Cyprus, and then westward to the shores of Asia Minor. At a city called Myra they found a grain ship from Alexandria. Soon after leaving port the ship encountered heavy winds and the island of Crete, many day and finally arriving at the island of Crete. They followed the southern shore of that large island and they reached Fair Heaven, a small port on the south shore. The sailing season was now about endorsed and winter was rapidly approaching. Paul urged Julius, who seemed to have the deciding vote, to remain for the winter at Fair Harbor, where he would be the ship owner and officers advised to make it to a more desirable port. It is very likely that the owner was anxious to get to Italy as soon as possible that he might get some money for his cargo—like many among us would grow for the profits he was impatient to realize. It was just likely that Julius decided with the shipmen think the better judges of navigation than his distinguished prisoner. When a soft 'south wind blew they were sure they had gained their purpose. But they had only gone a short distance when the wind changed—a raging storm swept down upon them and for two weeks they were at the mercy of the storm. The heavens were black with clouds and neither sun nor star came out. The weather was casting most of their cargo into the deep they gave up all hope and saw only a watery grave. Paul in Charge of the Ship and Gives Encouragement When all had lost -heart- had saten but little in fourteen days, Paul again comes to the 'front'. He reminds them of the advice he had given when they were about to start on the voyage which had brought disaster to them. While the storm was raging an angel of God stood by Paul and assured him that he was to stand before them. He then said to them that not of the ship but not one of the 276 souls on board should be lost. Finding they were near land, they cast anchor and waited for day—during this time Paul insists on the men eating that they might be strengthened for the final struggle. He then gave thanks to God before them and said that they would be revived and when day came they made an attempt to land the ship but were unsuccessful but thrust it into a place where two saas met—it tikling fast in the sand while the rear and was torn saucer by the violence of the waves. Paul at this time saws his own life and that of the soldiers to kill all the prisoners. Julius tells all to make for the shore—some swimming—others on pieces of timber from the demolished ship make their way to land. 100 In The Realm of Religion PAUL GOES TO ROME Golden Text—I am not ashamed of the Gospel; for it is 'the Power of God to salvation, to every one that Believeth. Romans 1:136. Paul at Melita On reaching the shore they find themselves on the island of Melita where they spend the winter. These people treated the shipwrecked crew very kindly—making a large fire that they might get dry and warm. Paul soon became the center of attraction in Melita, assisting a viper which as soon as he was warm fastened on Paul's hand. The natives knew what to expect—death in a very few minutes—saying that surely Paul was a murderer and though he had escaped to him he could not escape justice, but when no harm came to him they decided that he was a god. Paul healed the father of Publs the chief man of Melita and he was given a healing mission during the three months they spent there. On leaving they were given all they could wish for the journey. On to Rome "A grain ship of Alexandria marked the "Twin Brothers", which had wintered in the island was now starting on its final voyage, on this Julius put his prisoners, which passing Rheium soon put in at Puteolte where they go by land to Rome. They are met by brethren on the way which greatly cheered Paul. Paul on reaching the city of Rome was so impressed by his work years while waiting for his hearing before Nero he wint many souls for Christ. He had converts even in Nero's household. He did more in the providence of God than probably he could have done if he had been at liberty. Joseph J.
