The immediate urge to the presentation of Tuesday night was the visitation of Mr. Louis P. Patterson. There he was to a performance in which an all Negro cast appeared at the State Park Auditorium. There he was to a group of those who appeared in the material in members of the race. This urge was coupled with the design of a group of those who appeared in the drama seriously and to attempt to portray the very beautiful portions of general life as they did in the drama. Timothy and Titus, we learn that he went to Greece, Grete, Ephesus, Macedonia, coming to Trous, and that it was his purpose to spend the winter in Neapolis, in Epirus. It is thought that it was at Trous that he was again arrested, and carried back to Rome. In 64 the greater part of Rome was burned and Nero to avoid suspicion from himself charged the Christians with having started the fire, and mutilated and killed him in horrible way. It was during this awful persecution that Paul was executed. It seems reasonably certain after his release Paul served five years more on the field as a missionary and counselor of the new generation of Christian leaders. Among the young leaders some offered greater prizes than Ephesus. It is to them he addresses his three pastoral epistles. Paul's Final Words to Timothy Just before the end comes Paul writes his final message to Timothy who was in charge of the church at Ephesus. Having met the athletic contest Paul delivers his last words as a victor. The apostle admonishes Timothy in the sight of God, and of Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead to preach the word, to be instant in season and out of season, to be baptized in the water, to be baptized, exhort, with all long suffering and teaching." The Christian ministry cannot always use smooth words, he must at times rebuke sin, but it must be done in love. It must never be done in a harsh hightempered spirit, but at times it must be done in a kind of well enough to know it would stand solid truth, but would seek that which was pleasing to the ears. But he was not to be moved by such demands, he was to "praise the word," Paul says, "like the blood poured out before the sacrifice," and he was to "praise the word" at hand. But I have no regret I have played the game to the finish. The crown is now won. In the Olympic games it was a crown of olive leaves, in the Pythian games it was crown of laurels, in the Nemean games it was a wreath of laurels, in the Athenian games it was a wreath. Each was for superiority in some context. But the attraction in this contest was a crown of life. Then he makes it interesting to every Christian contest when Paul says, "and not to me only, but also, to all them that have appalled me," and the Roman Emperor was dying, he called for a mirror, and after gaiting at himself and smothering down his hair, he said to those about him: "Have I played my part well?" If no appalled him, the Roman Emperor is being offered he points all men to the Lord the Righteous Judge who has a crown for all the faithful. THE BIRTH OF JESUS "There is born unto you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." The time of the birth of Christ was the last of December B. GOLDEN TEXTS: I have fought, the good fight, I have finished my course I have kept the faith, Tim. 4:7; There is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord, Luke 2:11. An exposition of the Sunday School Lessons for Sunday December 28, 1928. By Chas, W. Abington "We are to consider today two of the most important events in the world's history—the closing seses and final message of the greatest character of all humans" history, and the advent of God in the flesh. At most we may hope in the limited time and space before us to indicate that we are in the midst of the minds of men with ever deepening concern, moving them to ever expanding investigation for almost two thousand years, and like the diamond mines of Kimberley, each succeeding generation has combined to dig deeper and deeper into their treasurers and passed them down on the ages richer for the experience. Many writers on the Sunshine Coast have written about the importance of both themes, one giving us a parting glimpse of Paul the angel praiser on Jesus Christ—the hero of many battles, now broken in health, atopcoming under the weight of years, shut in a damp cold prison for his time of departure which was close at hand as the curtain slowly falls upon the tragedies of the world. We are ever broadcast on earth joined in by the angelic chorus whose anthems of praise fill the heavenly world, as the shepherds watched their flock by night on the Judea plain nearly 20 centuries ago. It is impossible to trace Paul's life with the same accuracy after his two years imprisonment in Rome as before. We find in the Acta and in the Panine epistles a wonderfully connected story of the life and laborors of the great Apostle from his conversion up to his first confinement at Rome, and of his return to Rome after the death of the Roman tribunal. "Delivered out of the mouth of the lion," is interpreted to mean from Nero himself—feroce as a wild beast—or it might have been his perfect Helias Caesarsus, to whom Nero committed the government of the city during his absence. The story of his return to Rome is thought Paul's first two years of imprisonment was occasioned by the fact that the Jews from Palestine did not appear in put in their charge against him. The trial could not proceed until the serer appeared in court. The Jews knew they had no chance of escaping, and had been discharged innocent by two Roman governors and they must be able to off set their decisions. Under the Roman law if witness did not appear in 18 months against a prisoner he was regarded innocent. In Paul's case there was no formal trial, but the remaining time of his two years occupied with the formalistic necessary for his release. Paul's Possible Adversity While at Liberty Tradition claims after Paul's acquittal he visited Spain. ELM at HARWOOD darkest night of the erase and as the true "Light of the World." The real purpose of Christmas is to reveal God to man. It is related of an Eastern ruler that when he died he left word to his people that his son should be their king, and though he had never seen his face, they would judge of his government by his acts. The people promised obedience. The influence of the new ruler was wise and kind, and like the poems of the ancient Greeks, he brought to every subject. The people marveled and said: "We see him not; how does he understand us so well?" We came to the palace gate and said, "Let the king suffer us to see his face." The king came to them in his royal robes and when they saw him they rejoiced and said in his words, "We are the people, showing loving kindness to all, that when they saw him in the palace, his kindly robes did not disguise him. They knew him. This is what Christmas means. In the incarnation our King comes to the palace gate and lets him see us. He is the king, dwelling among us." God has been in the world from the beginning of the creation, ruling and guiding its affairs in love and wisdom. But for long ages man not recognize him and know him—they felt his power and enjoyed the sunshine of his love. But it remained for the coming of Christ for us time we see the gracious King at his palace gate. No Room in the Inn The Roman Emperor had ordered that an enrollment be made for convenient taxation which brought Mary and Joseph from their humble home in Nazareth, a distance of almost a hundred miles, and when they reached Bethlehem, their ancestral city, the inn was crowded, there was no room for the Christ to come into the world and there has never been room for Him in the hearts of men down the years, and the only room they have is the gift of Jesus to the world will have no room for Him in their hearts. What a great Christmas it would be if we all would prepare Him room in our hearts. TO OUR FRIENDS AND CUSTOMERS L. A. B. Reid, M. A. Norvell and W. A. Jordan. Though you dress depression in tissue paper, drap it in tinsel stars and tie it with holly wreaths to mimic the glee of others you can never fool the Christmas spirit. He knows. Knows whether you are blessed with joy or cursed with gloom. Why? Who can say? Perhaps the Christmas Spirit himself swings the mirror of truth to reveal you as you are. For seven months Grace Loring had pretended to be brave, for seven months Hope Loring had pretended to be happy, for seven months naring Christmas and the Christmas Spirit was descending upon the sisters with woe, miserable and ugly. Once upon a time they had been wealthy, wealthy indeed, though theirs had been an afflicted family, wealth had done everything to ally the plague of illness. But one year ago Alexander Morley Loring, scholar and traveler, father of Grace and Hope, and the last of the Loring men, had died, and following his death it was learned that him had died the Loring's riches. Bad investments! Everything was in a muddle! The old ancestral loring house was sold as were the books and the old furniture, and withal the two girls had a neat sum. Then Hope, who had always been considered the sturdiest of them all, succumbed to the family plague and the death of the boarded money was gone. HARD TIMES That was at time both Grace and Hope wished to forget. The Twinings, friends to the Lorings for a generation, stood by them, Arthur - Twining did more, than enough. It had always bee supposed that Arthur and Grace would marry, but to every one's surprise, as soon as Hope could travel somewhere than she should have, the Loring girls had slipped away, actually slipped away from all their friends and the scene of their sorrow. For several months they had been hidden away in a little town obscured by its own lofty mountains, where Grace had found work as a saleslady in a little, close, dark store which impudently lay claim to the name of "Broadway's Emporium." Assisted by the advertisements in the town, they had found a tiny furnished house, on all, and set up housekeeping with the hup, of course, of Lily White. Another saleslady had told Grace about Lily White, in fact told her so many things concerning Lily, that Grace held her breath while interviewing the dark, the straight, the imperturable Lily, never for once believing that Lily would condescend to come to them for the little she was able to offer. Had not the friendly saleslady said: "Oh you pay them fifty to seventy dollars just for cooking." Yet Lily came, and for that Grace and Hope were exceedingly thankful. It was the one thing that the Christmas Spirit found them reloicing over. CANNOT AFFORD TURKEY "Hope, darling, turkeys are fifty cents a pound: we could never afford a dinner, dear, what will happen should they kill." A sob from the foul huddled creature on the davenport. ADDRESS: DUGOUTS 00, 185 Church St., Dept. 61, New York, N. Y. ILLUSTRATED FEATURE SECTION "Grace, Grace what a funny, funny Christmas it will be." "Tremend-obly," laughed Hope. "Sald Grace, drying her tears galal- havg each other, and- Lily White." "Lily! - Lily White." Instantly to their mind's eye sprang a vision of that straight, dark girl, and her snowy name, and they shirtd laughter; they laughed and laughed, then suddenly began to weep softly, while the Christmas Spirit stood by brazily to wipe their tears. MISTLETOE-PREFERRED "Let me hang these, Miss Hope, don't you think they're pretty?" "I say Christmas without some mistletoe aln't Christmas. I'll just hang this up, too." "It's a holly wreath, artificial, though—ain't never seen no real holly." "Yes, m. I bet now, it is pretty, but I prefer the mistletoe." "Christmas actually wouldn't be Christmas without m." Hope Loving reclining upon the davenport wearily propped herself upon an elbow to watch Lily fit here and dart there like a blackbird, about the room, talking incessantly and cheerily. She was heartken in spite of herself, cheerful Lily fitting about made her forget the bleak outlook of tomorrow. She found herself recalling the trusting-ful expectancies of her childhood. Old Santa! How she loved him! His white beard, his shining black boots, his gay red garments, adored all of him, believed in him! What right had she to doubt him? During all the years when she had believed, he had never failed her, never. Dear old Santa. Oh, supposing. In her illness and helplessness she felt so like a weary little girl. "Supposing!" The thought perished. "Supposing old Santa would come, even now if she but trusted."" She looked about strangely. Lily White had gone, flown from the room without a sound of fluttering like a swift winged blackbird. No. No magically like an old Santa that utter nonense." She said herself and fell back dejectedly among the pillows. GRACE IS LATE Grace was late; later than ever, her riot, because the Christmas rush, even in this, out-of-the-way spot folks rushed on Christmas Eve, was on. Lily White would be gone home, even that did not matter, nothing mattered any more, only Hope was alone. She attempted a quickened pace, but her tired feet not be rushed. She was dead tired; her body ached and throbbed, she was feverish, and she fully believed she was dollious. . . all day her brain had created phantasms. There now! There before her was another! Holly wrestle in the windows! Mistletoe in the doorway! If was . . . well . . . she must not alarm Hope, poor little Hope. "Hang up your stocking, little one" She forced herself to call gaily. Grace choked and turned away to hide her brimming eyes, an she took off her hat and her wavy wraps. She lifted her head, what was Hope saying with not, a trace of mockery in her voice? "They are hung, big sister, yours and mine." "Woll, of all things, Hope Loring," Grace, gaped at sight of the two children, snatching from either end of the mantle. "Tally, White asked me to," said Hope simply, "And Santa always comes to good little children." "Let us make-believe we are little LIP REDUCER LIP REDUCER 10 Have small, pretty, kissable lips. "Yes," said Hope. "That will make Lil' I mean Santa very happy." "We shall set the table, if Lily will let us. I wonder will she allow us to help?" "They were holding tightly to one another's hand; their faces shining happily like little children's faces unseen. Christmas morning." "You have made us a merry Christmas," they cried to Lily. "Tut, tut," replied that lady, "Christmas must be in your heart." "Probed by the Christmas spirit, Grace and Hope... remembered, that stored away in an unpacked box were some remnants of the Loring silver, and that a certain cloth would be the very one to enhance the Christmas feast. A GREAT SURPRISE When everything was ready the few, remaining touches, which Lily declared, one but her own sheer self, was capable of doing, they dressed. . . I never would've believed it, if I wasn't standing here looking at you with my own eyes. . . So Lily greeted them as they entered the tiny room where the feast was spread. Scarecled had they entered, and Hope had cried. "Let us sit here together," when a knocking, loud, then louder, sounded at the door. A man entered. . . Arthur Twining of all the people in the wide world! Grace was in his arms clinging that as naturally as leaf to stem. "They under the mistletoe" quoted Lily White solo voice to Hope. "And if you'll listen to me. Come out here and watch me dish up the turkey." "Lily White. . .
