Terrell, who, in order to remain to the last with the only mother that he had known, ran the risk of certain death at the hands of officers who sought him for a murder committed the night before. The survey of Negro business after having examined more than 3000 businesses in thirty-two cities of fifteen states during the past year. The study was made here this week to Dr. Robert R. Moton, President of the National Negro Business League, under whose auspices the survey was conducted. The survey of our businessmen to the Negro market—a field too often confuse themselves only necessarily limited by the wealth and buying power of the group—has been aided by the success of these groups. Cases are cited where Negroes have been able to compete in the open market against all others. These furnish ample evidence that given a thorough knowledge of their business, the success of the market requires the most fruitful. The present study of the most fruitful field for Negro business enterprises, the report reveals, as still predominantly individual enterprise. Especially is this true in the retail field. Too few partnerships exist and not enough corporate�er there are, however, many hopeful signs of cooperative efforts as indicated in the advancement of the insurance and industrial development. R. Banks of Bank of Texas has been selected by the Bureau of Education, Department of the Interior, for outstanding educators of the race who have made a survey of the Land Grant Colleges for New Mexico. This honor was awarded the principal in appreciation of his ability as an investigator in the investigation of Prairie View, the largest Land College in New Mexico. The survey will be by far the most thorough and comprehensive of the institutions, Mr. Banks has always manifested an unparalleled ability for such fact-finding enterprise and other methods of research in his investigation. The Statistician of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, speaking at this morning's session of the National Interracial Conference of Life Insurance, told the Department of the Interior Building, "The Colored people have made very remarkable progress along health lines in the United States." The lower death rate and the longer life span have disproved the old American Negro to ultimate extinction because of inability to fit into the hard conditions of America. "The race has shown, in many ways, great ability to profit from the lack of education to the difficulties of to over come but this light is far from a hope." The Negro has learned how to adapt himself to American life, the ability to do good to the old living and the spread of education among them will, I am sure, help to reduce death rates and mobility rates lower so that they may well be the great mass of our population of a similar economic status. The Negro is still about two-thirds higher than that of the white, and is still more attested at the younger ages and is ```markdown ``` --- CONTINUED ON PAGE FOUR due to causes which we understand, and which, fortunately, lend importance to our health, tolerance of tuberculosis among Negroes is still a major item. It is important that we treat them and its prov婆ice is three times as great as amateur white men, and its rabidity declining all along the line. "The health progress of the Negro race will from time to time be increased by the heavy intermarriage between newcomers catch up economically with their fellows and provide them with the necessary amenities which are available to the other cities. Our outlook for the future of the Negro from a health, standpoint is distinctly bright. He is getting a more aware, if not a more aware, of the identification and public health work in America. His expectation of life is that the Negro race will be white only thirty years ago. I believe that the Negro race is well organized with underincreasing environmental conditions and life expectancy. There will be no opposition to the passage of this bill on the part of Negro laborers in America. They will look upon it as a real Godendan in the light of the experiences of the Mexican laborers in Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. Particularly is that of the larger cities of such states in which Mexican labor has practically replaced unskilled Negro labor. Section work on railroads, street and ditch work of all sorts is being done in the United States, whites is now done by Mexicans who, with their lower standards of living, and their familiarity with desperate conditions, accept this work at low wages and use it only for the importation of others of their families to increase the supply. The extent to which this situation maintains in Texas has not come to the attention of the general public. And it is probably true that the organization which has specialized in the general group is the general group. It is headed by C. W. Rice of Houston and it has helped materially in keeping situations open for Negro laborers by special investigations in this field and by direct appeals to Chambers of Commerce and kindergarten workers. Its work, if restricted to this situation only, would make it well worth supports. And now that there is actual possibility that steps will be taken to keep the situation under control, it is afforded by an unregulated influx from Mexico, it does not seem unwise to join with this organization in urging the members of Congress to pass this bill without delay. The Negro laborer in Mexico, a southern city is near Mexico, and the stipitation of some years ago to employ only white men where they could be employed, the movement to crowd Negroes out of lucrative positions has gone on space and now it is literally true that theeeo action must begin by those who see the need of it. As in the case of our spirituals, we are too close to the days in which they were produced to realize a great and distinctive contribution they are to the general life of America. And too, we have lied for so long in the atmosphere of prejudiced America which held us up to ridicule, that we have been forced to have been before the source of our ridele. But until the Negro as a group realizes that his spirituals and his types are just as much a part of him and have contributed as largely to making him the sensitive alert, deep feeling person that he is, as have all other types and forms in other races. He cannot go forward in pride in his making and in our well defined group progress. If the American white man of the south can reverse and seek out the finer points of his slaveholding ancestry which with actual purpose fostered the creation of half breeds because of their greater price and mixed the breeds with those of the blacks, Jew in the world can proclaim to a critical and discriminatory world that Judah is his and may some day effect the world in a greater way than it has as yet, if the northern white man can forget the switch burning days of the American Colonies and reverse the ancestry which he has certainly the American Negro with an ancestry which is not the American Negro with an ancestry who gave as much of the art and science to the sum total of the world's present stock of civilization can afford to seek the inherent beauty in his type life and learn to rewire the immediate progenitors of the present generation. And the search for that beauty and those stories can well become the life task of a group which has faith in its own capacities for interpreting these beauties to a world which has always appreciated the beautiful. From the character of the presentation of these beauties to the character of the cast, it is actuated by serious purpose. That there are tremendous possibilities in their venture was more than ordinarily indicated in their first presentation. As the Christmas season approaches it is well to realize that gifts without feeling little like the needy must be looked after along with the friends who are not really in need. Remember them. He never found it inconvenient to give more than a few minutes to the community. He so lived as to leave no question as to his belief in the basic principles of Christianity. Newton Miller had no luck for a spectacular career. There was a lack of ambition, editions, he fact, not only unassociated with him might have misinterpreted his ambition, but his ambition one might expect of the son of an illustrious man, an ambitious man was always aspiring to reach his goal in public forums or to be quoted from printed hues, but to direct the young to nobles, water, and thoroughness, the goal of decent standards, the goal of Christian work without russ or flarry. He did his work without apology or embarrassment. What he lacked made him russable, made up in him attractive and con- conculation. Are not these reflections of a life so, worthy work, a course of sake at a time when our civilization, when one reviews a career so steeped in the man of "fital fever." In entirely different vein, Claire Kummer's rivals convoluted the debate. The best candidate for the second number-Hinche Dogan and, Silia Coffidian carried off the piece with the most flair. While Lillian Lewis added the proper note as the mother, A. S. Hawkins at the father was pious. Although the Kummer skill testified itself by the finish in which it was done and was doubtless productive of self-confidence in the group in that it showered them how much at home they can be in this rather difficult genre. It is to be hoped that not much time in the future will be wasted on such trials. Why indulge in Tin Pan Alley trash with immortal spirituals at hand? For any amateur group can achieve the gross of this type of society comedy, but perhaps only the Negro Players can bring a certain understanding and feeling to the Negro folk plays which are fast becoming a peculiar glory of the American state. This estimate is strongly reinforced by the final play of the character, Count Rohr. "Here is something approaching dramatic literature, man, it is a magnificent portrayal of the poet, wooing the audience. The performance given by the four Tromsby boys Wooten as a poet, James Boorsen as a poet, James Thebodean, the Metzleman and Ebon were perfect. Local press reports affirm the announcement that George Brandon of this city has been arrested at Los Angeles. Monday in connection with the murder of Claude Jaster here last August. It is alleged that Brannon was arrested following his statement to Los Angeles Peace Officers to the effect that he had been tried and acquitted of the charge, when questioned by the officers. Claude Laster, a local contractor and builder was shot and fatally wounded by Brannon here on August 21. Brannon gained his freedom on a light bond and remained at liberty until the grand jury convened here last Friday, following which an indictment was returned against Brandon. His subject was "The Salvation of Oppressed Minorities." Paul's Final Words to Timothy Just before the end comes Paul writes his final message to Timothy who was in charge of the church at Ephesus. Having met the athletic contest Paul delivers his last words as a victor. The apostle admonishes Timothy in the sight of God, and of Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead to preach the word, to be instant in season and out of season, to be baptized in the water, to be baptized, exhort, with all long suffering and teaching." The Christian ministry cannot always use smooth words, he must at times rebuke sin, but it must be done in love. It must never be done in a harsh hightempered spirit, but at times it must be done in a kind of well enough to know it would stand solid truth, but would seek that which was pleasing to the ears. But he was not to be moved by such demands, he was to "praise the word," Paul says, "like the blood poured out before the sacrifice," and he was to "praise the word" at hand. But I have no regret I have played the game to the finish. The crown is now won. In the Olympic games it was a crown of olive leaves, in the Pythian games it was crown of laurels, in the Nemean games it was a wreath of laurels, in the Athenian games it was a wreath. Each was for superiority in some context. But the attraction in this contest was a crown of life. Abington "We are to consider today two of the most important events in the world's history—the closing seses and final message of the greatest character of all humans" history, and the advent of God in the flesh. At most we may hope in the limited time and space before us to indicate that we are in the midst of the minds of men with ever deepening concern, moving them to ever expanding investigation for almost two thousand years, and like the diamond mines of Kimberley, each succeeding generation has combined to dig deeper and deeper into their treasurers and passed them down on the ages richer for the experience. Many writers on the Sunshine Coast have written about the importance of both themes, one giving us a parting glimpse of Paul the angel praiser on Jesus Christ—the hero of many battles, now broken in health, atopcoming under the weight of years, shut in a damp cold prison for his time of departure which was close at hand as the curtain slowly falls upon the tragedies of the world. We are ever broadcast on earth joined in by the angelic chorus whose anthems of praise fill the heavenly world, as the shepherds watched their flock by night on the Judea plain nearly 20 centuries ago. It is impossible to trace Paul's life with the same accuracy after his two years imprisonment in Rome as before. We find in the Acta and in the Panine epistles a wonderfully connected story of the life and laborors of the great Apostle from his conversion up to his first confinement at Rome, and of his return to Rome after the death of the Roman tribunal. "Delivered out of the mouth of the lion," is interpreted to mean from Nero himself—feroce as a wild beast—or it might have been his perfect Helias Caesarsus, to whom Nero committed the government of the city during his absence. The story of his return to Rome is thought Paul's first two years of imprisonment was occasioned by the fact that the Jews from Palestine did not appear in put in their charge against him. The trial could not proceed until the serer appeared in court. The Jews knew they had no chance of escaping, and had been discharged innocent by two Roman governors and they must be able to off set their decisions.
