Did not the Negroes help put Nisbet in office, and fight to keep him there when threatened with recall and for their unwavering friendship he gave treachery? Was not that same spirit manifested in permitting signs of disgrace against our race to be placed all along Curtis St., in big black and red letters." Negroes Not Wanted," "Colored Trade Not Solicited"? Cannot you still see in that "black and tan" order forbidding to Negroes certain equal privileges with others, that same mean hateful spirit of race hate and oppression against our race, that he so brazenly and publicly exhibited in the "Birth of Nation" fight? Insults, slurs, treachery and one solitary jail appointment spell his record as it concerns the Negro.
Has Nisbet ever apologized, explained or attempted to excuse his insults? Does he regret his actions against us or should we apologize to him for his insults? Shall we kiss the hand that smites us by honoring, supporting and continuing him in office? Why did not he in his public meeting Thursday night, come before you and apologize, explain, justify or excuse himself? No, he knew you could be bought off with a few dollars, election day and a little honor as delegates and with some law breaking privileges. He has ignored the race at his own meeting, will you now vote him in office, so he can repeat the ignoring and fight you when the segregation ordinance will be introduced later in the council? Do you know that when you vote against Nisbet, you are driving a wedge in the coffin of segregation? Shall we protest fight, lay down and forgive when no forgiveness has been asked and then forget so soon? Our true friend-employ 15 men regularly; our so called friends gave 2 jobs, the former recognizes and encourages our manhood and self-respect, while the latter thinks we are political slaves and insults, Jim crows and attempts to crush out all our ambition-by binding us with their prejudices. Has Mr. Greenlee ever excused or apologized to you when he said "he did not believe Negro and white should work together? We are sorry for Mr. Greenlee because we like him and believe he could be made to see "some good in Negroes"
. Stand or Cringe, Statesman Attacks Friends to Tickle Foe of Race.
Again large quantity of the silly scarey rot and meaningless expressions of verboseness about Wilson and the Democratic party coupled with the abuse and threats against our Colored ministers filled the editorial columns of our contemporary last week. We asked him a few pointed and well directed questions about Nisbet and about the Jim crowism practiced at his headquarters and he never answered them. They never answered the questions asked yet they made reply disgracing our ministers, Mayor Sharpley and Mr. Pitcher who affiliated with us. Why would not our big hearted white friends who are standing on the battle line fighting for our equal recognition and respect along all lines with others, regard their efforts as futile and ourselves, as ungrateful when we permit the self elected, self centered messenger leaders thru the Colorado Statesman to throw mud at them and their uplifting and encouraging effort? Did the Booth-Nisbet committee Jim crow the petition workers and the Colorado Statesman? If so, the Star agrees with his Editorial writer when he wrote concerning the "cur."
"Every Negro is more or less familiarized with the thraldom and oppression we undergo from the hand of this foe, who in his years of relentless toil, deprives us of some of the liberty of our constitution and who also impairs our enjoyment of civic advantages by segregation and other methods of proscription; therefore the colored man or woman who will humbly lick the hand that smites and bruises him or her is no better than the common cur that grovels before a brutal master," and if the Colorado Statesman and Booth committee were insulted then we agree with the language of the writer. He condemns his own action and that of all Booth-Nisbet followers in an attempt to hurt and sell the face. He told the truth then. Because Booth-Nisbet amendment has failed, the Colorado Statesman viciously attack all the Colored ministers of Denver, hurled mud at Mayo Sharpley and Mr. Pitcher, and blindly stabbed at the

Life or Death. Firing the Last Shot. On Brink of Destruction.
The Star will not join in congratulation on misfortune and disgrace, nor will it concur in a blind and servile actions of a few self-elected and selected messenger leaders who approve and endeavor to sanctify their monstrous conduct which has heaped disgrace and misfortune upon our race. This is a perilous and tremendous moment. It is not time for adulation, flattery or jobs, nothing but our manhood, womanhood and love of or the respect of our race can save us in this rugged and awful crisis. We must tell facts dispel delusion and the darkness enveloping it; displaying the full danger and colors, the ruin which is threatening our doors. Do you know that on Franklin Street petitions to separate and segregate Negroes are being circulated and that already in Montclair, white people are meeting and organizing to prepare for an introduction of an ordinance to go to the new Booth council, if he is elected? The fastly gathering black cloud of Jim Crowism and segregation of citizens hangs in a most threatening manner over our heads and yours; and before midsummer comes it will probably burst upon us; let us then repay our obligations to our friends who stuck to us in need while some entreat heaven to avert our threatened ruin, humiliation, expense and destruction that we might all be and remain free brethren and countrymen in peace.
After making this fight against Birth of Nation and Nisbet-Booth, should you prove unsuccessful; should that friendly and respectful feeling between the races which we ardently wish to maintain be dissolved: should our ministers of the gospel who have fearlessly, earnestly, and honestly stood up on manhood's respectful principle, fail with us in trying to win the dominant race's respect; do we not deliver you, weak and defenseless, to our enemies? Since then, your respect for race and manhood must be the price of your victory for Speer; your ruin of your defeat; what blind fatality can urge you to a pursuit destructive, to prejudice and Jim crowism that Nisbet-Booth amendment hold so dear?
Our messenger leaders declare an unalterable determination to pursue along certain lines of submissive conduct which have produced imminent peril to the race and which now threaten us with ruin at our very door. Has a grin, a submissive policy or complete surrender to prejudice or whims ever planted and nurtured a manly thought in anyone or won any principle upon which real men and women stand? Are these leaders deliberately attempting to excuse meanness. Jim crowism and insults to the race, merely because some body else wronged us or merely to be a delegate to county or state convention or a speaker at a Booth. Nisbet meeting or for a promised clerkship? How cheap! Nisbet has insulted you, with his money, influence and some of his friends have encouraged and sustained (real) Negroes to flaunt his name in our faces even to call a meeting, invite you there and for what purpose? These Negro messenger leaders would rather save a few hungry republican politicians and by so doing, humiliate and destroy the race than stand for respect and manhood of the race. They will argue, explain and excuse the insults to the race for the men who did it. If Negroes in fighting for the race were right when they opposed Nisbet then, certainly they are still right and all who oppose them, do so, knowing that they are fighting the men and women who are fighting for the race. Excuse or no excuse, they are against you and the race, you cannot get around it. They are fighting white men who fearlessly invited slams and pernicious attacks of the daily paper for the Negroes' benefit. Common sense teaches all that the man or race that defends himself or itself will in turn be defended by others. No appeal, no amount of money, no semblance of glory or honor could induce nor make an white man turn his back upon his race to favor a few Negro Republicans, no matter what the issue was. It is now up to you. Let every Negro do his full duty at the polls
Vote For Speer And Against All The Rest. If you vote everything down you swallow insults, play the coward and quitter and rock the boat of friendship and opportunity to pieces.
Build or Wreck. Resent or Swallow
The Star with you loves and honors its race, with you it knows its ambitions, short comings, uptreadings, heartaches its battle with the foe within and without the race; it knows its virtues and valor and the threatened dangers of segregation just ahead of us and too well does it know the hard fight it, alone will be compelled to make. All these things the Star knows with you and for these reasons any show of weakness, cowardice or surrender on our part will bring down the just wrath of the white men who have risked all to help us up and not kick us down. Therefore the Star appeals to the manhood and womanhood of the race; to that something within your breast which bids you rise above injustice, flattery, money and honor consideration and save the race and its friends.
Was it not, only last week that the Birth of Nation caused a white Kentuckian to ruthlessly shoot with an abandoned and malignant heart and kill a young Negro high school attendant, Edward Manson of 15 years, without any cause in Lafayette, Indiana? Suppose he had been your son? During the strenuous times of our fight against that vicious film, you know how hard it was to restrain young Negro volunteers to do violence. Suppose the level headed Negroes would have listened and secretly hired that bomb thrower who wanted to blow up the Tabor Grand, causing murder and the races to clash, what then, Mr. Nisbet? Who wants another such experience? We realize a white man is a white man and that one white friend is as good to us, as another, Democratic, Republican, Baptist or Methodist. Be Negroes first, regardless as to what you are afterwards and whatever that is, let all respect you as that. Are you slaves to any man or party, that he or it can, by applying the party lash, force bulldoze or brow beat you into doing what your conscience rebels and condemns you in doing? You owe them absolutely nothing. They will need you this fall, even worse than you need them. Since you work for what you get, why should you worry, even if the blood hounds of a few republicans are trying to humiliate you by bulldozing our manly men and brave women. Our self styled and self elected messenger leaders with a few others upon whom we should rely for guidance and direction, are the first to go over to theoes under some pretence of an excuse, good, reasonable or bad.
If the bosses regard their ability and fitness as leaders so highly, why dont They Show it and recognize it with appointments to suitably correspond?
The Birth of Nation fight began last September and ends next Tuesday when you cast your ballots. The white people of this community and this nation are wondering whether the Negro will have enough of the red blood of race pride and self respect, as to protect their rights with the ballot. They know that manhood and respect of Negroes is put up against insults. Jim crowism and dollars. They know that there is no half way, no scratching and that you must either swallow these insults by the lick spitte route or resent them by standing together like men and women. What kind of feeling or respect can these white insulters and Jim crowers have for Negroes who will support them against their own race? They know white people wont do it for Negroes and these republicans should not require this of Negroes. All that any fair white man requires of any Negro is that he be honest, courteous, many and full of race pride. Do you know that every Negroe's name in Districts C, H and T together with the number of the registered in every precinct is known? Now, Negroes don't show up well in these precincts resenting
A WOLF ASSASSINATES WOMANKIND IN DENVER.
The Vote-all-down Class Go No Limits to Gain Votes.
Among other things, ex-Justice of the Peace Wolfe was alleged to have made this statement on the street corner of one of our crowded thoraces Thursday: "No decent woman and only prostitutes will support Speer. The girls in the Manhattan restaurant on Larimer St., they are for him. You know what they are. And the colored women who support Speer are nothing but prostitutes." This is in substance his statement as reported to us. If this decrepid ex-justice of the peace made this remark about our women, he is devoid of intelligence, reason, and is a fit subject for the insane asylum. When he calls our wives, our daughters, sisters and mothers, as dear and as precious as they are to us, in such language upon the public street, he stabs at our vitals, spills cut our life blood and runs dagger through our hearts. He lied in his mouth; he lied in his throat; he lied in his heart, and if such remark was made before Negroes about their women, somebody would have to call an undertaker or doctor. O NEGROES, you who love your race and your women, YOU who would give your very lives for their honor and protection, resent this unholy, black, baseless, disgraceful and disgusting slur upon us, by walking with head erect, shoulders back and face upward, to the polis Tuesday and casting your vote for Robert W. Speer and against all other amendments. Nisbet began by insulting you and getting away with it. Now why can't Wolfe do the same? Remember, the race is on trial Tuesday. Hurl this lie back in his teeth, split it in his face, close his very eyes and so fill his dirty and foul mouth that the lie will stick forever in his unworthy throat, by voting for Speer and still be DECENT and RESPECTABLE. Resent all insults.

(Continued from page 1) insults; what white man can we get to help us in our segregation fight just ahead of us. He offered us his friendship, we betray him and give him treachery. Vote for Speer. Do or DODGE, DRIFT OR ANCHOR.
When Booth-Nisbet Amendment was put in the field no concern, attention, notice or consideration was given the Negro at all, they were simply ignored. Nisbet had declared already that he could, by giving a few Negroes a chance to do an illegal business and with only $100 in money he could buy up all the Negroes, even if it took three delegates to Pueblo. Seeing the Negro is thoroughly aroused, they help your enemies who represent the man who insults you, tell you to a bandon their ticket with their pet serpent and vote "no" on everything. What does that mean? It means you, Negroes after you are insulted, are too ignorant to know it, too degraded to resent it, by voting Speer up and in office with our friends or too corrupt and lazy to protect your race and are nothing but a race of cowards and quitters with a yellow streak when it comes to a real issue. Meet it squarely, to vote "no" on everything spits in the faces of your friends, lowers your manhood, stabs Mayor Sharpley in the back and knifes Mr. Pitcher in the dark Be men or mice. Can a fellow, Odd Fellow or Ruthite, U. B. F. or S. M. T. or Knight of Pythias or Calanthe, Mason or Eastern Star Daughters of Tabernacle forsake Dr. Westbrook, a Mason, Calanthe and Knight of Pythias, or Dr. Spratlin, Grand Master of Odd Fellows and member of nearly every secret organization in town? Let us make one effort all for one and one for all, and if we must fall, let us all fall like men together inseparably linked together. Be not cowards nor quitters and rock the boat be a "stabilizer" with faith in ourselves, in Speer and his amendment and its ultimate triumph for the right. Or shall we, fainthearted and inconsistent recoil with horror, and fear and submissively beg his pardon for insulting us and our race. We must anchor fast to manhood, courage and self respect or drift upon the waters of insults, Jim crowism and treachery within and without. Anchor with a vote for Speer.
Shall we wait until the enemy's army of segregators and Jim Crowers are elected in office, mobilized, with trenches dug by Negro traitors, and everything in readiness for them to deal us a deadly blow thru these nine aldermen elected by the Booth-Nnsbet method from the city at large, with no direct responsibility to any particular district? Can you not see that bug under the chip? The Speer plan makes each district responsible for its alderman and perchance if a bad alderman gets in he must answer to his district when you meet him at the

gap with your votes, either to reward or relegate him. Did you notice that the charter provides for the consolidation of Districts C and H into one district, No. 8? More Negroes live in these districts than in any one district. Does the Booth-Nisbet plan offer Negroes any such inducement? No! One of the best features of the Speer amendment which will amply take care of any such plays as "The Birth of a Nation." is as follows:
Section 6. There shall be, and hereby is, created a Department of Safety and Excise, which shall have full charge and control of the departments of Fire and Police, heretofore under the control of the Commissioner of Safety; and which shall also have control of the department of Excise, heretofore under the control of the Commissioner of Finance, with full power to grant, renew, suspend during investigation, and revoke after notice and hearing thereon, all licenses, and in addition thereto, shall exercise the powers and perform the duties now required, or that may hereafter be required, by the Constitution or the general laws of the state, to be exercised and performed by the Sheriff.
The Manager of Safety and Excise shall be the officer in full charge and control of said department, and shall devote his entire time to the duties of his office.
This article was inserted at the suggestion of Lawyers Townsend and Ross in lieu of taking an appeal to the Supreme court. This article is clear and powers definite. This alone ought to make you for Speer.
The number of registered voters in District C, precincts 1 to 12, is 4,469, and in District H, precincts 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 15, there are 5,848 registered voters, with a heavy Negro vote, as well as in District T, where precincts 1, 2, 4, 10 and 11 show 6,645 registered

FOURTEENTH AMENDMENT CELEBRATION PROPOSED
Colored Citizens of New York Ask For a $10,000 Appropriation.
Brooklyn.—The following is part of an editorial which recently appeared in the Brooklyn Dally Eagle of this city. The Eagle says:
The formal request made of the board of aldermen by the colored people of the city for a $10,000 appropriation to help them celebrate next October the anniversary of the adoption of the fourteenth amendment to the United States constitution is not to be lightly turned down. The idea of equality in civil rights is fascinating. The ambition for such equality is worthy. The race has enough members here to justify some consideration.
Yet students of what has happened to the Negro since the reconstruction period may have reasonable doubts whether the civil rights amendment helped much. It was intended to help. After half a century in most of the states that were in the Confederacy and had slavery Negroes are still lynched for trivial provocations, and no lyncher is ever brought to justice. The Negro vote is concededly "suppressed" in Louisiana, in Mississippi, in South Carolina, even in Georgia and Alabama. Jury equality does not exist. Equality in schools does not exist. Why should the Negroes want to celebrate this amendment?

Mrs. Ida DePriest was given work in the office of the Election Commissioner thru our old friend Mr. Henry B. Teller (a Democrat), while an ex pressman and a messenger were also hired. A friend is a friend and it we be friends show me, tickle me like I tickle you, so we both can laugh with joy. Why should she not work in this non-partisan campaign, and why should she not vote for a friend who has proved his friendship to the race? Who got Booth's printing for colored? Ask J. D. D. Rivers.
The Star gives all to understand that no alliance be made at the polls save the alliance of freedom, equality manhood and self respect, and no peace that does not rest on the safe and permanent basis of executing justice between man and man. We want all that belongs to the full fledged American citizen. We are in earnest. We cannot be bulldozed. We cannot be bought, and under God we will be heard and felt by voting Speer up and in Nisbet down and out.
Did Nisbet ask the Negro speakers to do for him what he was ashamed, or had failed, refused or neglected to do for himself, that is, to apologize to the race for the shame he has heaped upon it? If you don't know how to mark your ballot, ask or phone us.
If I could divide my vote in ten parts and then multiply each part by ten votes, I would cast each vote for Speer as a supreme rebuke and keen resentment to Nisbet.—Ross.
Did you hear of Horace Phelps, Booth's speaker, last Thursday night? During our Birth of a Nation fight. Where was he THEN when we WERE COMPELLED to tread the wine press alone? Does he only know you at election time? Nisbet struck at and hit the race a foul blow and will you help the Star to strike back? No political party is big enough and dear enough to me or mine for me to make my race suffer in order that a few Jim Crowers should hold and be retained in office. Birth of a Nation did not help the prejudice already lurking in Denver; it only served to increase, aggravate and crystallize it. Montclair and Franklin St. are the segregationists finest and latest examples.
"I am for Robt. W. Speer for mayor first, last and all the time. He can and will do what he says he can and will do. If I could only get my people to see that in city elections a friend is a friend and a man a man, and that we should at all times, in all places, support men and principles, especially when they are friendly, rather than worship a political party, I would be the happiest man in Denver. Who put me where I am today, in a place of honor rarely ever given to a colored man? I have been put there by a real man who loves all humanity, and who likes to see everybody up and aspiring to make the world better. Only two of such appointments have been given in this country to Negroes before Mayor Sharpley stood by us in the Birth of a Nation fight, and may God bless him for what he has had to endure for us. My illness has prevented me from taking more active part in the campaign, but I want and hope that all my friends will help me hold my place of honor at the County hospital by voting for Robert W. Speer," said Dr. J. H. P. Westbrook as he sat in his easy chair Thursday.
The Star owes its first duty to our race, and it is compelled to admit that when Mr. Speer found out that 75 per cent of the colored people were for him and were honestly helping his cause, certain business men gave Negroes more consideration, a way was opened for a temporary place in the election commissioner's office for a Republican worker, Mr. George Hall, expressman, was given a job for three days to haul ballot boxes to and from the polls, with the assistance of Mr. Gay, both of whom will be paid nicely. A colored band and orchestra have been employed, and Mrs. Robt. Sloan has been put in charge of the headquarters at Five Points. All these things spell something. Neither Dr. Sharpey nor did Mr. Pitcher wait until election time to cultivate the Negroes' friendship

at the postoffice in the city of Denver,
They felt the need of it all the time and they acted. How can you be true to yourself, your race and your friends and turn them down? Vote solidly for Speer and against all amendments. You who want instructions, go to the Five Points headquarers and let them show you how to mark your ballot and take a sample home with you so you can show others. Everybody talk Speer from now until Tuesday night. Our parting word to you is, remember you fire the last gun in the Birth of a Nation fight, when you cast your ballot. Aim carefully, shoot straight and walk away proudly, as you VOTE FOR SPEER.
2,000 NEGROES DECLARE FOR SPEER AT EAST TURNER HALL
Mayors Sharpley and Speer Given Ovation
Two thousand Negroes met at East Turner hall Thursday night to hear the issues of the city campaign as presented by Mr. Speer, Mayor Sharpley, Attorney W. B. Townsend and Mr. Jefferay. For three hours they listened attentively to each speaker and when the meeting ended a rousing Speer demonstration followed. When a race or manhood is insulted, it needs no incentive to resent
When a race or manhood is insulted, it needs no incentive to resent sent the attack.
SPEARLIKE SPEERISMS.
Large powers can be safely granted where there is a recall in the hands of the people, and there is no question about the recall being in force under this amendment.
What we need, above everything else, is not more people, but more prosperity for the people we now have.
Lack of work is one of the greatest breeders of crime, and cities should spend at least as much money to prevent crime as to punish it.
I want to see Denver lead in city government, and to do so the administration must eliminate politics, enforce laws, be free from newspaper and corporation dictation.
No city can become great upon vice and immorality.
Higher ideals, sublime patriotism and noblest action depend upon you. It is not what Speer was yesterday last week, or last eight years, but it is what he is and what he stands for today. To live and die in a yesterday makes fossils out of us, but the big and broad men and women of thought and action take a masterly view of men and events by living in the "today."
Did this Booth committee, headed by Vick Roy, ever tell you why they Jim Crowed the Negro petition circulators, advertised in the sacred Post, and that they were sorry? No. It was not necessary, because they had Massa Harper's Jim Crowing messenger who had powerful influence with you. Let us by our vote wipe out all insulters and Jim Crowers with one stroke.
Think of what they are asking you to do: Keep the same man in office thru your assistance, with the same power; a man who stabbed you once in the back! What can you hope for? What if it does wreck or destroy a few political ambitions of a few Republicans? What if their hopes are crushed, so long as we protect, preserve and defend our manhood and race pride. What did the lily white Republicans do in Arkansas? White people are watching you and your actions in this fight and they will look at you and measure you just as you look at and measure yourself. Respect yourself first and others will respect you. If you cringe or show weakness, St. Louis Jim Crowism triumphs and "Birth of Nation" Nisbet will exult in his insults.
We yield to none in respect for those who from honest convictions and motives oppose Speer and swal low Nisbet. Yet when some few ser file sewer rats of the Republican party attempt to besmirch the purse and intentions of such men a our ministers, Messrs. Sharpley and Pitcher and our professional men, we doubt their sincerity of action and platform of principle.
Build or Wreck.
The Negro's Plain Duty at the Polls.
(By William G. May)
Fortunately, we are at last presented with the much desired opportunity of delivering ourselves from the chaotic conditions incident to the commission "mess" of government, from which Denver has suffered woefully in recent years. After expensive ventures in experimental government, it is proposed, thru amendments submitted, to return to the mayor and aldermanic form. It behooves us equally with other citizens interested, to enlist our active support with the amendment which makes surest for the upbuilding and advancement of Denver, for constructive and practical statesmanship.
With all thinking citizens agreed that the commission "mess" has failed dismally and a radical change is eminently desirable, the problem of the approaching election reduced itself to a choice as to which of the first two amendments is the more advisable to adopt. The adoption of either would probably be generally satisfactory, as, in effect, their operation would be practically identical, the very important and essential difference being the personnel of officials each would inaugurate.
There are two combinations that have certainly wrought havoc with Denver's municipal conduct, viz: Politics and inefficiency, and inefficiency and politics. The atmosphere in this high altitude seems impregnated with elements that tend to sap the popularity of candidates capable of performing the functions of offices they seek. In this, as in previous elections, every honest effort calculated to solve correctly the problems involved, is beset with elements and agencies designed to confuse. Yellow journalism has arisen in all its indignation and fury, proclaiming itself the people's champion, offering in abundance identically the same advice responsible for the deplorable conditions from which the people are suffering.
Colored men and women, either to gain or to hold a few janitor jobs, have assumed the solemn role of race saviors, crying aloud to us and to heaven that our only salvation depends upon the election of the unknown and unheard of Mr. Booth and "Birth of a Nation" Nisbet. In so doing they are obviously collaborating with the enemies of the race and furthering the pernicious influences of a yellow and degrading journalism without which Denver would have been in fact, as well as in name, "The City Beautiful" and the "Queen of the Plains."
Of the Negroes above referred to, I pause for a reply to the following questions:
What has the Denver Post ever done for you except to chronicle on its front page, in glaring headlines and red ink, the minutest details of rape, murder, lynchings and crimes generally where Negroes are reported to be implicated or to have committed? Are these repeated outrages upon your race and upon common decency attracting you to the support of its candidates?
After nearly ten years in office, with hundreds of positions under him, what has this man Nisbet, who had sole power to suppress that vicious film, "Birth of a Nation," done for you? I remember him insulting you and your intelligence by permitting the exhibition of "Birth of a Nation" but—but what? One janitorship from his hundreds of positions. But let us investigate further and we'll find where the Overland bandit has no corner on gall. Mr. Nisbet, in return for one rag and one mop, cordially solicits the support of "all Colored citizens." He temporarily relieves his janitor (substituting him with a white man), and sends him forth to "lead" colored people to the tune of the most remarkable keynote ever devised. Listen! It runs thus: "A vote for Speer is a vote for Wilson." How is that? It is a clean "knock out." Those of us present knew better than that on afternoon Jan. 1, 1865. Neither does it embarrass these esteemed ladies and gentlemen to so affront your intelligence. Their hope is that by repetition and daily suggesting the thought, they may hypnotize a sufficient number to the polls to accomplish a result at which we should shudder. It is only in the absence of a plea worthy of your support that Mr. Nisbet sends you this Wilson "bogie." But we wish to assure Mr. Nisbet that he neither deceived nor frightened a soul.
We propose to offer a practical demonstration of how easy it is to vote May 9th for Mr. Speer. I desire to impress upon my people most seriously and earnestly, if the logic of events can be safely followed, that you can never obtain recognition and consideration commensurate with your strength and numbers until you rise as a race and demand it, ignoring entirely that perennial line of veritable "bunk" delivered to you for election consumption only. To swallow "Birth of a Nation" without administering Mr. Nisbet his PROPER REBUKE on election day would be but little less than criminal on your part, and any man or woman who offers extenuating arguments for Mr. Nisbet should be immediately classed with the "gumshoe" who "buttonholes" you to the curbstone and whispers the Old Abe argument as a reason for you voting for a "yellow dog who may be on a Republican ticket."
From those dark pages we now turn to others in more beautiful and encouraging contrast of a man who has made a competent and capable executive. It is only logical to conclude that, with additional experience and extensive observation and study in foreign cities, that candidates should render even more efficient service in the event of their election. Mr. Speer's executive ability, capacity, and his thorough knowledge of the conduct of municipal affairs are unquestioned by his bitterest opponents, who are compelled to admit that he knows "every little thing" about the proper administration of a large city. It seems then that the election of this man should offer us a certain course out of our miserable misgovernment. If we honestly and earnestly desire to again place Denver on the map, we have no alternative. Caucasians and Negroes alike will one day learn that to reduce taxes to a minimum, enhance property values, create sufficient employment for all and enjoy generally the fruits of good government, the selection of the most competent officials is necessary. Mr. Booth might be a diamond in the rough, but have we not grown rather weary of experimenting? The surest way to insure prosperity and political peace is to arrange on May 9th an extended vacation for the professional reformers, incorrigible agitators and "never-do-wells" in our midst, and this will best be accomplished thru the election of Mayor Speer, whom we all know and who has been especially favorable to the colored people. Since he left office we have seen position secured thru his influence go glimmering until they are no longer in consideration.
For the best interest of Denver, to regain a measure of waning political prestige and as a fitting rebuke to "Birth of a Nation" Nisbet. Let each and every one of us go to the polls and demonstrate to other people that we are, at heart, interested in the upbuilding and prosperity of our city and another "Birth of a Nation" comes to Denver, the city's gates will be pad locked. A vote for R. W. Speer will accomplish both purposes admirably. Be a builder or a wrecker, which?

FETE OF NATIONS.
Of all the beautiful post-lenten events given in Denver recently, the "Fete of Nations" under the auspices of the Ladies' Guild of the Church of the Redeemer easily takes precedence. Unique in conception and artistic in execution, it is indeed doubtful if an affair more brilliant and striking was ever witnessed in the city. The Dutch family, looking the part to a nicety under the skill and guidance of Mrs. Mildred Abernathy, led the way mid deafening applause. Next came the gay Spanish girls in brilliant bespangled costumes, of deep red, waving aloft the tuneful tambourine amid sweet strains of Spanish music by the orchestra. Mrs. Chas. White was responsible for this stunt and it caught the fancy of the large crowd at once. The Geisha girls or Japanese group then appeared and to say they were received with a warm welcome is to put it mildly. Nor was anyone prepared for the classy drills and graceful dances they brought forth. The audience showed high appreciation of their efforts and warm words of praise were extended to Jno. Carrie, Jr., who was the drillmaster. The final number was the Indian tribe and their hit was complete. The war dance, the camp fire scene and their drills, with the ceaseless beating of tom-toms, kept the crowd in an uproar. Little Madge Benoit, the "papoose," was the unquestioned feature of this number. Miss Bonnie Stafford was crowd Queen of the May, and Dr. Crump the King.

LA JUNTA NEWS HAPPENINGS.
In the midst of our busy preparations for Easter, we were happily surprised by the coming of Revs. H. F. Bray of Denver and John L. Williams of Colorado Springs, with their wives and little Dorcas Bray. Accompanied by Mrs. Edythe Settle, Rev. Bray's sister, they were en route in an auto to the general conference which meets in Philadelphia. As they reached the house a tire exploded, necessitating their stay over for Easter services, which was a pleasure and very profitable to our churches.
Rev. Williams made the Easter address, Rev. and Mrs. Bray each taught a class in the Sunday school and in the afternoon attended the program at Mt. Zion Baptist church, with Rev. Bender as pastor. For the evening an excellent program was witnessed at the A. M. E. church. The pastor and congregation of Mt. Zion Baptist church dismissed their evening service and worshipped with us. Short talks were made by Revs. Bender and Williams, Supt. of Mt. Zion Sunday school, Mrs. Ray, and our own Supt. Mrs. M. A. Berry, Rev. Bray and the Rev. Mrs. Williams making the chief talks of the evening, which were indeed an inspiration to all. The writer was complimented for his solo parts of the songs, "He Rose" and "He's the One," which were very much appreciated. Our collections were $12.53 and as a token of appreciation to our guests, the congregations gave them $4.05 to buy cards to let us know how the journey went. The district conference and Sunday school convention of the Albuquerque district will be held with this church June 21-25 and the people are expecting to make it pleasant for all who attend.
Mrs. Settle stopped with Mrs. Berry, Rev. and Mrs. Bray with Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Grant, and Rev. Williams and wife with the wife and Mr. Wright, with whom we had a pleasant sojourn in the North Missouri conference. They left Monday with much praise for their entertainment and the people of La Junta. They expect to return this way. More anon. Subscribe for the Star. See me. Mrs. Mollie Blair, mother of Mrs. Anna Blair-Berry of Chicago, will leave Tuesday for a month's visit with her daughter in Chicago, Ill.

WHY I AM FOR
ROBERT W. SPEER
In the first place I'm for Denver, her good name and prosperity. I fought for lower telephone rates and reduced the price of every phone in Denver.
In the first place I'm for Denver, her good name and prosperity, I fought for lower telephone rates and reduced the price of every phone in Denver. I assisted in the fight of grade teachers for higher wages, also against litney busses coming into Denver, which all know would have injured the company that has always given splendid service. It would have been a crime to have out this system in the hands of a receiver without any apparent benefit to our people. I favored settling the water question at the arbitration price of $14,400,000.00 by either buying or giving a franchise. I was bitterly condemned, yet today after taking away a goodly proportion of the Water Co.'s assets, the "High Chief" who bounded Moffat to his grave agrees to pay the same company relatively: the same arbitration price, notwithstanding his previous statement "that our city could duplicate the entire holdings for $7,000,000."
For years past millions of money have been kept out of Denver on account of this agitation, still we are paying the same price for water and have spent hundreds of thousands in suits, commissions, etc. Was I right or wrong?
I fought for better roads and streets—for Alexander and Kendricks for school directors because they were real men; for C. A. Lammers for commissioner because of his high reputation and against "fakers" coming into Denver to strip our city of thousands, while the poor were begging for coal and food.
Many other improvements and benefits, such as a loop at the depot and cadet system in our schools, I have favored and pushed and I feel my record in Denver will prove that I have always stood out fearlessly for the people's best interests and in most cases been on the winning side.
Today, like thousands of Denver's best citizens, I am fighting to elect Robt. W. Speer as mayor, and for the adoption of his charter amendment, because reforms of nearly every nature have brought us to the brink of disaster.
The "Big Brothers," in commenting on commission form of government stated that we had jumped out of the frying pan into the fire. In other words, we had elected five tails and no head. Mr. Speer has not reformed or come back. He has never been defeated nor has he committed a dark deed in the past for which he is willing to repent. He never told any preachers to go to hell, even if he so wished, and he never will see the day that such men as Rush, Finch, Nisbet or Duffield can blacken his character. They may stain his clothing, but not his name. These men combined with a "Pink Sheet" and Patterson, are now talking moralties and temperance, and trying to hinder Mr. Speer's election. What have they ever done for Denver?
Did Patterson ever fail to collect rent from his hotel because the management sold liquor and run a cabaret? Tom now writes columns in a paper which he condemned as the foulest sheet in America, and now sits at the right hand of the man who hit him in the back and stabbed his name with a poisoned pen.
I am for Robt. W. Speer because the offal of literary and political scavengers are against him; because he has the ability to run this city and nerve to back it up; because most of the improvements in Denver worthy of note originated in the brain of this big man; because Finchism and Rushism are diametrically opposed to efficient government; because if this man of backbone is elected he will run Denver instead of letting a gang of blackmailers, hypocrites and mud-singlers demand the entire patronage of our city government. I am for Speer because he has stood the shot and shell of infamy without flinching; because, had he been a crook while in office, his enemies would have placed him behind the prison bars, even the it cost them a million; because he knows every department as I know my store, and because this time thousands of taxpaying democrats, republicans and citizens who do not want office, but anxious to give our city a boost upward; a tone of thrift and an administration such as every working man and woman and men of means desire.
We've been overdosed with cathartics, which work while we sleep, and nauseated with countless bottles of "peruna." We've been popularized all over America as the hot-bed of political thieves and we've had spasms of virtue until business has given way to purity meetings and the wheels of commerce clogged with rotten rags dropped from the forms of pirates willing to double-cross their own mother to retain a political position. I'm for Robt. W. Speer and his charter amendment because I love Denver and want to see "full dinner buckets" in place of reformation soup houses.

ADVERTISE IN THE STAR AND LOOK PROSPEROUS.
Even though you may not be prosperous, adopt as far as possible the appearance of prosperity. It is sound capital and will bring good interest in the long run. Shabby-looking people you may have noticed, always appear apologetic and can easily be turned down when they are most in need of a helping hand. Keep a brace front. Dame Fortune likes to throw her magic cloak about the shoulders of the man or woman who looks capable of making the best of it.
