SEC'Y SHILLADY TO PROSECUTE CASE AGAINST TEXAS Illinois Fraternalist Says Race Fought For Democracy N. A. A. C. P. SECRETARY SAYS ATTACK ON HIM UNWARRANTED; HAS STIRRED UP HORNET'S NEST INFORMER EDITORIAL POLICY HEARTILY ENDORSED BY REAL RACE MEN HERE AND ELSEWHERE VOL. 1 NO. 18. SEC'Y S Illinois I N. A. A. C. P. SECRET ATTACK ON HIM HAS STIRRED UP By JOHN R. SHILLADY. Secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. 76 Fifth Ave., New York City. Unless Texas repudiates the statement of her governor expressing satisfaction with a broad and unproven attack upon our state, unfortending United States citizen she will have confessed herself a lawless state. I went to the capital of Texas, Austin, having telegraphed the attorney general's office for offering information concerning the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, which when they deferred to the office of a committee of the local branch of our organization was at the office of the attorney general, who needed to the attorney general's office and conferred with Acting Attorney General, who offered him the fullest information concerning the purposes, methods and work of the association, handling him and his staff. After this interview, lasted some time, I proceeded to the office of an extended interview with Acting and an instant General Col. W. D. Cope. I in- peace and examined by state officials, and to offer to these officials a much fuller record than could be obtained against the reports and publications of the national reporters, copies of which I brought for that purpose. The assault upon me, in the light of these facts in his deliberate falsification for Texas mobbiles to charge me with being an "affliction" and "insulting Negroes against white men," the assault upon me, by a group of men, including a county judge and a constable occurred after I had been held in the light of the legal action called "court of inquiry," in which addition to legitimate questions, I was asked to elaborate on and defend my action by the county attorney, such as: "If you're such a nigger lover why don't you go and stay in New York?" "If you're such a nigger lover as to look like to have INFORMER EDITORIAL HEARTILY ENDORSE RACE MEN HI One of the best arguments that a newspaper is voicing the sentiments of the people who constitute its clientele is in the hearty manner in which it uses words of commendation given the editor from time to time. Last week's issue of The Houston Informer, apparently, was a "hunner," if praise and words of commendation count for anything. On all occasions, he has translated The Informer, and mediated its street sales broke all previous records that week. Here are a few encouraging words from real leaders, who have made good. An East Texas Banker. "I have been so busy since the birth of your splendid paper that I have never been able to congratulate you and bid your Godpeed in your splendid field. Treat every man right and fear no man is more grateful for you." I am yours. (Signed) "E. M. GRIGGS, President Farmers and Cattlemen, Savings Bank, Palestine, Tex." The county judge who look part in the assault in broad daylight on one of the main streets of the capital of the state, said he was alert and alert of the court and had full opportunity to hear all of my testimony, and to see that it was as the legality of my intentions and nets, it is perfectly certain that I am arrested in so Robbie's an environment. After the hearing the presiding judge invited me to come to his office and invite me to a reception invitation I declined although at that time I did not think as I do now that it would have meant an assault if not second story office, as my assailant the next morning the same group that loitered about the building in my apartment had come to my hotel. While directly opposite the Hotel Driskell, I was approached from behind by a group of men in an automobile. I was surprised to see summoned me to the secret session the day before, took hold of my arm and gathered round me, indicating that I watched peacantly. Instead of a subpoena I was showed with blows from all sides. No assistance was offered me on the street or when I went into the hotel. 1. Congress will be asked to investigate this specific assault on the Money and Debt Bureau, approved a criminal assault made by public officials upon a citizen of another. 2. Following the president of the Money and Debt Bureau, case the president will be asked to demand protection for citizens of New York. An appeal committee has been appointed to initiate proceedings against the mobilitated criminal organization, Field Stovey and Butler Waven of Boston, Chas. H. Studin and Arthur Spinning of New York, and George W. Riley and Rating Haven. An appeal committee has been appointed to the public opinion of the nation will be made through the press and planned for next week in this place. EAL POLICY DORSED BY REAL HERE AND ELSEWHERE East Texas Merchant. I have just finished reading your well edited paper, and accept my appreciation for the level-leveled, far-reaching stand you have taken and be marked degree of common sense to the light. You will have our support. Sincerely yours, "Please accept my hearty congratulations upon the excellent paper you are editing. I do highly endorse the seminal, practical, conservative, and innovative works, which we have done in August, 30. It is rational and should appeal to the sense (common), honor, and integrity of all American people; in fact, the civilized world. Keep up the high-class, journalistic standard you have set and your efforts shall be crowned with wonderful blessings. "Yours truly, MK (Signed) "DR. O. L. BLEDGE, Marshall, Texas." CELEBRATED INFORMER RAMBLER CONFABS WITH GREAT AUSTIN "DOC" HAS NEW VIEW ON RACE ISSUE If anyone will take the time to examine the real truth in this matter, Writing with a full knowledge of the real conditions at both places, know that the conditions in the town are not the same. The workers at work in this city that looked forward to an equitable adjustment of the conditions unanimously agreed to obtain in Longwell up to a new gen. Terrorism is born." Out of the race trouble in Illinois, the commission whose duty is to justify the question of the relation of the state to the judicial branch of the state of Illinois. This commission is composed of an equal number of man from both races, including our own that is, K. William, whose standing and opinion on race questions is not to be doubted. CELEBRATED INFORMED CONFABS WITH GREAT HAS NEW VI CIMBEE'S RAMBLINGS and for up On the trains our folks get the best place, right up near the engine, where they can take hands and work with the fireman and engineer, and to keep from getting loneons, we have the "butcher" boy and train crew as companions. In our sections of the towns the colored man is so haughty he won't allow them to take hands and work with them, run a corral store and as soon as we compelled him to get rich, we make him more on one of those hard-paved streets and dare him to speak to our COTTON COMPRESS HANDLERS HELD BIG MEETING SUNDAY; WERE IN LABOR DAY'S PARADE at the elections because he is so "big city," and lots of other things too big to mention. About 10 people we reached the ground where I expected to see that. I could only count about 800 folks. Guess the others run around so I couldn't count "em" in him. From Climba, "cause I've been made to see the subject in a different light. Nothing like having a fine educated minister to lead us." LINCOLN WEEKLY PROGRAM. COTTON COMPRESS HELD BIG MEET WERE IN L One of the greatest meetings that has been held by colored men of this year took place on Sunday when over 860 members of the Cotton and Compress Handlers local, L. L. A. of the American Federation of Labor, the partnership has grown to 918 and from the applications sent in last meeting it will be the largest organization of laborers in the city and the most powerful. The partnership bears W. L. D. Lauss who knows his business well and very competent members and the financial care of, Young Hogan the efficient treasurer in live wives, and J. E. Pelletier the number and a number of others are showing by their capable leadership that a new business will be spotted. A number of visitors were present and Seyy. H. P. Carter of the Y. M. partnership will for the time he spoke in the great Mr. Grindage further said: "The justice is administered, the justice and impunity with which its law are administered. Non-enviable minds of the weak feel a feeling that all laws are unjust restraints. The final justice is the exercise of justice, reason and good sense. The only reason and good sense is a swift and rapid justice." Despite Fire Losses There is an apodemic which runs, "It is so ill. It is so good." After suffering the bad effects of several fires during the last two years, Wiley University, Maryland, has instituted a program with great compliance. One new course is completed and others are planned for the near future. The student Dogus has been treated at the University. The following have been added to B. Virginia Union University, A. M. Chicago University, English and edu tion, Howard University, Howard Howard University, A. M. University of Farth, mathematics and physic the belief of the Houston West Camp Community Service that a Red Army community has been simply justified by the large number of returned soldiers taking advantage of the faculty at Houston Camp, been simply justified by the large number of returned soldiers been benefited by the establishment of the Center but the committee of the faculty themselves while making it pleasant for the returned heroes. Wednesday, Aug. 27, M. W. Chan Quandong instructed the community sing, "while Miss Harper assisted as pianist. The management decided to schedule the concert for the fellow students every Wednesday evening and Sunday at 5 p. m. HANDLERS MEETING SUNDAY; LABOR DAY'S PARADE meeting, R. L. and Reed, colored greener, was well received and when the spoke of the power such an organization could wield the good of the people, urged them to follow their leaders, who they were, a new day was coming for the colored men who are now in employment for a more organized life and who are not so about that soon a large colored commercial enterprise will be started, employing several young men and The part that this organization plays is the Labor Bureau. Labor Bureau elected much command. Fully 90 percent of the organization responded to the marshal and helped to make the greatest of all parades. Much praises should be given Brown, Easterling, Corrish, Montgomery, and a host of others who were largely responsible for the excellent showmaking. Great things are in store for the organization under the efficient leadership of T. J. Brown and his assistants. HEAD K. P. UNIFORMED RANK DELIVERED GREAT SPEECH AT RECENT SUPREME SESSION Atlantic City, N. J.—"Dollars or other material gains count for little compared to the realization of our sacred constitutional rights in the mighty struggle in which we, a suffering people, now are enlisted," Robert R. Jackson, Chicago, major general of the uniformed rank of the colored Knights of Pythias, declared today in the supreme lodge convention here. "This is no common task," the Chicagoan, a former member of the Illinois legislature, continued. "It is a gigantic struggle and should be accepted by all. Let me say to the world that the 12,000,000 people of our race kept the fires of Americanism burying. Let us keep them burning until we burn up every jim-crow sign and every jim-crow car in this country, to the end that instead of reading us American signs, 'For Negroes Only,' we will read real American signs, 'For American Citizens.' "We have fought for every flag and nation under the sun, why not new fight some for ourselves? I do not mean to fight with guns, bayonets, cannons, revolvers, but with race unity, race solidarity and race leadership that will knock at the doors of the congress of our nation and secure our rights as American citizens, so that we can fulfill the demand too. Organizations such as ours must continue the battle of a just peace and a real democracy—democracy in all states. Organization will solve the problem without a traj-ev. It will require fearless leaders who have patience and tolerance.` Hate will not solve it, neither will prejudice. It is a big problem and a good job for big-hearted, big-brained men and women, who will make good use of that uncommon thing, COMMON SENSE.²³ WONDERFUL SUCCESS OF REV. GILMAN AS PASTOR ST. NICHOLAS CATHOLIC CHURCH-MARKED PROGRESS SHOWN The marvelous success of Father H. A. Gulman has attracted the attention, not only of the communicants of St. Nicholas church, but has caused durable relationships with him. Himtime, July 18, 1917, Father Gulman arrived in this city and after having been introduced by his predecessor, Father Murphy, he took charge of his work and became at once absorbed in his Christian duties. This was on the 18th of July. He at first was a teacher in the organization, particularly concerning the school and the manner to cooperate to meet such a work. With Christian zeal and unfiring energy Father Gulman started out to build a school for the small enrollment of the school, as usual, in the month of the following September and only 30 children were enrolled in the small enrollment of the school. Father Gulman, and he did not cease in his efforts to build up the school. His success, for when the school closed this year (1915) there were more than 126 children in the school, and 126 children within the walls of the school." Societies, such as K. P. C. Children of the Church, in existence, but not up to the standard that they should have been. From the pulpit on the importance of the above named organization, greatly impressed his heirs and added many more. He also used such union as perfects peace and success, the two indispensable elements of Father Gulman's pastorate he has enjoyed. P. St. Clair Hair Cultureist **Issues Statement** I desire to offer my most sincere congratulations to every man and every woman who can look into a man's skin and see the soft, pliable, silky, glossy and of abundant growth. Growth is one of "Nature's choicest ziff" and should be jealously guarded. No subject has been of keener interest or more vile scorpion-like scalp, or stated briefly, "Hair CULTURE." The mere fact that 'n the beginning man and woman were beautiful and of repute, the Creator intended every man and every woman to be equally beautiful. In addition to those congratulations, I wish to mention and represent that I am not responsible for the many preparations now being sold and claiming to be of value. And, again, I wish to state that not, under any circumstances, has this preparation been divulged or sold to any one. Through long experience I have studied the needs of the hair and scalp and the preservation of the hair, and the essential ingredients essential for making up preparations that properly promote the hair, the propagation of an abundant growth and the preservation of the hair. Therefore, could not be obtained at any price. The recipes are the foundation of the bounties in *HAIR CULTURE* and the recipes in *HAIR CULTURE* one would mean defeat in some cases, and the science would be equally distributed. My recipes are kept in a secluded yet convenient place, and have never been disheveled. More importantly, they prepare the idea, but unless my preparation is backed by a standard of merit, it would not be admissible. The *ST. CLAIR SYSTEM OF HAIR CULTURE* has demonstrated its usefulness and its value by the many examples of its quality, which is "standard of merit." It is the characteristic of youth and of full life. To develop your energy to a maximum is to insure a better life permanently. It is through the *HAIR CULTURE* that your life is increased and long life insured. "THE ST. CLAIR SYSTEM OF HAIR CULTURE" is the substitution to the real foundation of youth. It is through the *HAIR CULTURE* that it is the practical fountain of youth and each individual to look their best, and thus draw to the fountain of youth perpetually. *CHOICE?* THE *ST. CLAIR SYSTEM* and *PERFECTUAL YOUTH*; or inaction, neglect and age? You are now choosing. Which one? Yours very truly, MME. R. D. ST. CLAIR, 139 N. Swies St., San Antonio, Texas. HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1919 PUSSYFOOTING PULPIT PIMPS. PUSSYFOOTING PULPIT PIMPS. "The Houston Informer is sorely disliked and exasperated at the actions and antics of the so-called leaders of the race, who are courting the nomen of "good niggers" in the placing and publicity-seeking role in which they are attempting to serve durably. These men are proving by the easy manner in which they are excited and their proneness to show their nervousness and yellow streak when the least flurry occurs that they are totally unfit and unqualified for leadership of a bunch of cattle, to say nothing of a race of people. The race's status must be materially altered in this country both because of and many efforts within and without its racial unit. But with a bunch of "me-too-boss" and "no cause for complaint" darkens running to the public press giving out statements that they do not approve themselves, but which they do for expediency's sake, in order to get their mitts greased and use the white man as a convenience with such political pussyfooters who are not willing to appear as what they aren't, the colored race's lot in this country, particularly the South, is anything but a pleasant and pleasing one. Any reputed colored leader who issues the statement in the press or utter it from the platform or pulp, that there is "no cause for complaint" on the part of the colored race in Dale is from a good pussyfooting biped or a fit subject for an insane asylum. With mobs daily lynching and burning colored Americans, both male, female and children; with jim-crow cars, affording second to stench class service, while the race is forced to pay first-class fare; with disfranchisement, segregation and the autocratic class; with the oppression of the poor; with spite of his character and contributions for the peace, progress and perpetuity of this Republic; with the courts of justice refusing to mete out just and deserving punishment to those of other racial units, who wreak out their hellish and Hummish meanness and cuspidness upon colored Americans; with officers who take oaths to the Constitution; with officers who do violence to American citizens; with ministers of the gospel (Lord, have mercy!) participating in the demonstrations and orgies of murder and arson; with governors and other high officials condoning and encouraging race prejudice and lynch law; with taxation without representation, which the early fathers denied; with the oppression of the poor; by overthrowing the repressive and oppressive British yoke; with the pressing into service of every fair and foul means to destroy whatever ambitious spirit the black man might possess in his breast and thus “keep the nigger in his place”; with the daily employment of countless un-American, undemocratic and unjust men; who can see “no cause for complaint” needs to be examined by a board of alienists and his sanity determined. These lying grandstand players and inferior notorium seekers may fool all of the white folks some of the time; they may fool some of the white folks all the time, but they cannot fool all the white folks all the time. They are not fooling their own people, who know: where they came from and where they “wrote.” It is high time our pupils were occupied by men and not by pusyfooting pimps, praeters and parrots, who will sell their race and its interests for "30 pieces of silver." If one doubts their inincercity and hypocrisy, let him examine the records of the breweries and discover how the ministerial brethren of the race extinct octopus, which held Texas in its tenancies for many years. We have in mind the Austin divine, who seems to be obsessed with a bad case of oral diarrhoea and unnecessary excitement, who came out with a long statement recently on the race question. To show how his thought tank was operating, one has but to read his statement carefully and while it is the "voice of Jacob it is the hand of Eusebius" Lee Campbell, who is known throughout the country as a splitter and who assisted in tearing asunder the Baptist family in Texas as well as the National Baptist Convention, said that there is "no cause for complaint" on the part of his race in the South, and then before he concludes his say invites "de white folks" to a conference to consider and study, conditions, which in the offstart he admitted did not exist. Some logic! But that is just proof conclusive of how inconsistent, inconsistent, and inconsistent he is in Texas he favors an incorporated convention; but when it comes to the entire country " little Lee" does not favor incorporation. He was largely to blame for disrupting the Baptist household in Texas on the same issue virtually that he now endeavors to flaunt before the public. But he thought he saw an opportunity to get some cheap notions and be held accountable for an example of how he was well satisfied with his lot and that of his brothers in this country. Get our Prices Before You Buy Prices BEFORE CLOUD The present city administration was elected by the people who were impressed with the plans in their platform that promised equalization of taxes, and it is no more than a matter of justice that the proper assessment be assessed on all property. But it is a matter of injustice that the poor are not assessed on the same basis as the same as a 40-foot lot down by the park on 44th Street, a mile away from the carline, or the 30-foot lot down in the east end of the 44th Street. It is assessed on 44th Street in Park Addition is worth $100, surely a 40x100-foot lot on the 44th Street in Park Addition is worth $100, a 40x100-foot lot on the 37th Street is worth $100, a 50x100-foot lot on the 32nd Street is worth $100. It is a matter of naked injustice that the poor are assessed on 40x100-feet be assessed on 40x100-feet and another owns one acre be assessed $100, who owns in that one acre twelve times as much as the man with the 40x100-feet. The people of the city seem very anxious to see the assessed valuation be adjusted with a fair deal to all. TO THE RECORD. I would like kindly to have a word in your name as a subscriber. I hope that this will not make an unpleasant feeling, nor an evil thought. But I hope that the good citizens will see it like I do.
