We have a good woman's consideration of the personnel of the staff of the Union Hospital and Nurse Training School and a well balanced men of high reputation and well established factors in local as well as state medical affairs. We are also the president of the State Medical Association. E. B. Issac, one of our high school teachers and a dramatist and reader, as well as author, of rare at-tainments, who will direct and train the participants for the rendition of "Glittering Swords," a drama of unusual merit written by Mr. A. L. Murray, president of the organization; also author of The Loyal Pledge in the world of drama, "For democracy in the world," Mr. Lloyd Powell, vice-president, called on Miss Issac last Sunday afternoon and obtained her consent and promise to perfect "Glittering Swords" for so early appearance at the City Auditorium. Given the proper material, Miss Issac declares that the drama will be rendered in the near future. Miss Issac is also teaching and conducting a school of dramatic art and the Dramatical Association urges that all of Houston's young women and men take the training. Mr. Murray says that the association will establish filming institution shortly after the end of "Glittering Swords," and hose with dramatic talent will be the first called to participate in screen productions. "This is a new work aiming colored people," says Mr. Murray, but it is as equally essential on the bed to racial progress and the future of the country and the face of a clock before we can tell the time. Mr. Campbell of Yorktown died Sunday at the company hospital as a result of a bullet wound. Mr. Campbell was cleaning out his gun when it accidentally went off, shooting him through his leg. Framer Member of the 15th New York ("Hell Fighters") Regiment Who Wit Another Companion Routed a German Patrol in No-Man's Land Will TellHis Own Story to the People of Houston and Vicinity at the Sergeant Roberts' exploits constitute one of the most outstanding deeds of valor, heism and intrepidity in the recent European martial conflict. His regiment had been denied an opportunity to train intensively in this country before sailing it France to battle the Huns. His unit was the first combatant colored outfit to each the land of the poilu and because of their racial connections they were braided with the French forces. It was when the mighty German military machine as mowing down opposition and sending chills down the spine of the allied nations that Sergeant Roberts and Private Johnson encountered a German patrol onabout 40 men while reconnoitering in No-Man's Land and forthwith proceeded to make history both for the black race and the American nation. Valliantly the fought the Huns until their ammunition was exhausted and one of them laywounded, when Sergeant Roberts pressed his bolo knife into execution and inscribed his initials on several boches, captured quite a few and made the others joie the bird family. The majority of the citizenship are in real earnest for the city council to do all they can possibly do to lift the poverty rate and to ensure we with pure drinking water; so our health will be safeguarded insofar as good drainage and pure water will do it, and the only way to get these necessities is to pay for them. There are some men who oppose this loan from a honest conviction. That is, they don't want to pay taxes at the city, fear and trumbling and receive no higher return, and are other men who do not favor the loan because they think (as it has been painted to them) to do so that their individual homes will be taken away from them. They are fearful of the city and there is another bunch of kickers, knockers, who have been led to the altar and sworn eternal vengeance against the present administration; and they are losing sleep and energy to see to it that the present city council will be able to give of credit to them nor a benefit to the city in general. You take the set of men who are opposing, misleading, and holding up a banner of great calamity, if this loan succeeds, and you are not willing to give up. Are men who opposed this administration at the ballot box and were buried in defeat. As soon as you to awake, and assert yourself, let us demand every improvement we can possibly obtain, and we will be able to say the city council know that we are with them, and are willing to do as much for our families as any other set of men. Don't be a jelly fish, nor an object in the form of a human, but let us be a jelly fish, too. We must assume responsibility, and become the master of that responsibility. God, who is the creator of all things, who has no confidence in himself and none in anybody else, is but a cow condition and reason in itself, and sincere sympathy of all who may come in contact with them. The hardest thing today has such men as Sgt. Roberts and others had they been young men, who had a child in the knees, and the paralysis of the knees, and the responsibility presented itself, but rather as be as was when this great crisis was brought to the conditions, responsibility was made for man, and not man for responsibility. What is the idea of all this talk about the colored man or race desiring "social equality"? What is meant by the employment of that term? Is not the term "social equality" confused by these disciples of alarm and protectors of the public weal and welfare (most noble actions of democracy!) with the term of "social intermingling"? This stereotyped anteceduvian and anteceduitive doctrine has outlived its usefulness and is more the cantankerous exordiants of "broad" eyes" spotlight seekers and sensational and yellow journalists than it is the earnest and honest convictions and belief of sane and sensible men. There is a vast difference between "social equality" and "social intermingling." They are as far apart as the north pole is from the south pole. There can be no justice where equality does not exist. What the colored man demands is "social equity" "social acceptance." He wants the rights of society that other men and races enjoy; but he does not ask the association and companionship of men or women of other races. Social companionship can not be regulated by laws. If Bill Smith wants to associate with John Jones all the laws in the genius of mankind can not keep them apart. On the other hand if they do not desire each other's companionship and comraderie, no law can be enacted that will have sufficient force to compel these two men to be pals or social associates. Take both the written and unwritten law of the South relative to "social intermingling," what these apostes of alarm and exponents of force and mob-violence are want to call "social equality" and that they are through the plum of command upon by men from the other side of the house. Fully 6,000,000 mutuates out of 14,000,000 colored Americans speak louder than words that somebody is more anxious for "social intermingling" than the colored race. But which it is very difficult and this happens quite frequently to tell which race has a rightful claim upon some of these quadroons and octoons and in no case is the father of African descent. As soon as the colored man asks for a square and fair deal something the South is unwilling to accord him and will not allow him to do so. Bring out their age-worn bugbear and bugaboo of "social equality." It has been worked so that it now has the "wopsy." The South professes and proclaims to the world that it deplores lynch law and is putting forth an earnest effort to blot it out and as soon as colored people organize to aid in co-operation with the police, the cry is sent broadcast that the "niggers are organizing for social equality." And one disgusting part of the entire spectacle is that oftimes, nowadays, this old tale is started by ex-service men who are ranking with a spirit of revenge at their colored peers and through the plum of command the latter as men, despite the subtle prognazation of the former. The Informer can not see how any man, who lays any claim to common sense, in the face of the known conditions, can assert in public print or utterance that the black man is trying or the least anxious to cross the line. But he is anxious that men of other races should not be allowed to daughters alone and that when he protects the sanctity of his home at the hazard of his life, a lyncher's rope will not be his reward. All this journalistic diarrhoea about "radical Negro editors" and "race uplifters inciting Negroes to revolt against the white man etc., is unauthorized and unsophisticated bosh, buncombe, "dill" and "dill". Democracy is what the black man was told by his white brother he was fighting for in France and if that be true (which appears to the contrary) then the colored race in America is perfectly within its bounds and exercising good sense when it demands that this country become at home the exemplar of those altruistic ideals which he so loudly and blatantly proclaimed to the habitable globe. When the colored man purchases a railroad ticket, paying the same first-class fare as passengers of other races and then is shunted off in a little 2x4 jim-crow car, dirty, and incomodious, and feebly protests against such poor and un-American service, again the cry of "social equality" is raised. In street cars and interurban cars and trains in some cities, and in any untoward event transpiring because of such arrangement. Consistency, thou are a jewel, a rare and almost extinct specimen of democracy and Americanism! The white Southern newspapers base their viewpoints of the "social equality" scare-crow in the same manner as they do about race publications, which, by the way, seem to be causing the Southern editors many sleepless nights and beating out of business in its town. A Southern city, this white newspaper recently charged that colored editors "seem to be well supplied with funds for putting forth lurid publicity." This paper had never stopped to consider that this is a new age; that a new colored man is on the scene; that he is supporting his own newspapers and making of them towers of strength to fight the battles for human rights that is becoming racially self-conscious. To the colored man is becoming racially self-conscious, and when men begin to think, you can not enslave them. For years the south held both the black man's body and mind in object bondage; he was treated and regarded as cattle and chastal. When his physical emancipation came a program was immediately launched to retain the black man in mental slavery. He was denied education and military training; forced to live in sections of the towns until forugs and other beasts of the fields was paid starvation wages and every effort on his part to alter his status was met with hostility. He was armed force and unarmed methods of violence and terrorism. All right guaranteed him under both the federal and state constitutions were peremptively taken away from him and he dared not open his mouth, even in feeble protestation. Despite all these efforts to retard and block the progress of the race, the black man has reduced his illiteracy to about 80 per cent. THE HOUSTON 1. FORMER, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1919 PETER HARRIS It is not in the black man's physical or mental makeup to force himself upon other peoples. He will not do that within his own ranks, only in exceptional cases. It is strange how the Southern white man is willing to regard the black man as Southern and Fiji Islands as worthy partakers of all the rights, privileges and opportunities America affords and then deny the same things to his best friend and most trusted ally—the colored man. Is it any wonder that the thinking black man looks upon his white neighbor in "Bam" with an eye of suspicion? There is much truth to that axiomatic expression. "A burnt child dreads fire," is blinded and sensible free of the colored race (we can not speak for lackes, stoop-pigeons, pimps, parrots, et cetera), the white newspapers need have fear that members of the colored race are any ways anxious to miscigenate or amalgamate the two races nor is there any desire, even remote, for "social intermingling." "n everything." If the white man will permit our race to remain 100 percent of the population, he will be an ill-defined offsprings by black women and colonize them wherever he pleases, remain on his side of the houses and then he will have no fear that black men are "hossing" to be the social companions of white people. All this stuff now appearing in white newspapers touching upon the race situation, while dodging the issue and shelving it in systematic and diplomatically done for 50 old years is nothing more or less than buncombe, bosh, "bull" and "bull-shevish." BAPTISTS' BIG BLUNDER. The actions of the General Baptist Convention of Texas in relecting Rev. L. L. Campbell as president for another year at its recent annual meeting in Beaumont, while not surprising to those conversant with the petty politics, plots and intrigues, as well as cliques and their allies, that the Texas church can not but reflect very dissatisfably, not only the denomination, but the entire race. The sad plight of the colored race, today, is de largely to the pussyfooting policy and program of its pusillanimous pulp pimps, praters and parrots. Being surrounded with and fortified by such specimens of human lackesses (with few exceptions), the church is not the only one who, because of their past conduct (which will rt stand inspection), were forced to keep a stiff upper lip, there was nothing else to do but re-elect Campbell, choosing the lesser if the two evils, while the race can go to hell as far as these expounders of the Holy Writ are concerned. (Let us pray, church) In a gum-shoe campaign on the grounds, the main one being that the old convention, known as the Baptist Missionary and educational Convention of Texas, from which Campbell and his much split several years ago, would be tickled to death should Campbell be repudiated. To commit any act that would afford the a chance to re-lectate at "Doe" Campbell's downfall and unintended, prejudicial arguments, propagated by Campbell henchmen and hangeron, had the desired effect and the opposition to his re-elective "evaporated." In the re-election of Campbell as president, R. M. M. Haynes, for several years the editor of the Austin Heald, their official organ, was succeeded by Rev. Lott (we don't know if he is related to the original author). In the revised edition Haynes asked that in the event ampbell was re-elected that his name should not be considered or re-election. His manly and courageous fight for his denilation and race can not come to naught. There are plenty people living who will see his position vindicated. Such invariably happens in political and religious autocracies. How any seals can be loving man or man can remain in how that puts a premium upon placing, pussyfooting and clamping up palpitip pulp; that relegates to to rear those who espouse the cause of democracy both in church all state; that permits a gang of whiskey-heads, womongermens at ministerial misfits and "green corn" elders to steam-roller ally and endeavor to crush out brain; that is densely populated with jumping-jacks, cat's-eyes and other miscellaneous things that love for his fellowman can remain such a church surmits all understanding. The Informer again wishes to congratulate lose who had the courage of their convictions and could not be bought or enriched by the catchy propaganda of the enemies of rial advancement, betterment and solidarity. A confirmation of such, and similar state of affairs, is found to exist nowhere other than in religious circles. The circles of this church have ceased to take a warmhearted approach to the problems that never fail to awaken the church and increase their demands for salvation. SOUTH'S GREATEST RACE NEWS Take it from me, kid. I'm some blin her. Readon Roberts, who speaks at the City Auditorium Saturday night, ain't got nothing on me. Course I haint whipped no big crowd of "Huna" with my trusty razor, nor captured no thirty or forty. "Heinies" in "No Man's Land" but believe me. I been doing some "heroting." Why, man, I stopped a race riot all by my lonsome, unassisted and "unescorted." Yes, sire, it was some riot—just like most of them race riots what the daily papers been running such big head lines "bout. Man, it was awful, frightful, horrible! I never want to see as much blood again as long as my name is Cimbee. But the blacks fought nobly, although they were outnumbered. O, I'll never forget that sight as long as I remember it. I can't sleep at nights for the dreadful nightmares I have. I wake up "hollering" murder! You see it all happened this way: I had been rambling all last "Sadday" out in the "deep third" way out on Scott Street and called by and cracked a few jokes with my merchant friend, Arthur Jackson, who runs the best stocked grocery out on the "slotberbs" of the city, and rambled on back by Will Maxwell's "uneek" grocery and meat market on McGowan Avenue, across the "Old Tap railroad, and chatted with that poor, underpaid school teacher, Brother J. C. You know I got two kinds of chickins—some White Barred Rocks and some black common stock—but owing to the locality in which I live I've put up a "scren" betwixt 'em, cause I'm a law abiding "culted" chicken and ain't goin' to let no black chickens eat with no white chickens while I can drive a 8 penny nail. But some hower mother one old black rooster had got on the wrong side of the "scren" and man, the race riot was on in full blood. Blood and feathers was flying thick and fast. I turned the hose on 'em and after a hard struggle stopped what might have ended in a lynching bee for all the white chickens were holding a caucus in one corner of the lot and the barnd yard daily had already set the leading—"Another black lynched." I sold that old black rooster for six bits to cause I don't want nothing round me what tries to practice "social equality." It's bad "enuff" for the white folks to have to ride on the same side of the screens and eat in the same "restauraws" with some of these "greasers" and others I see, without that old black rooster trying to start something in my yard. "I 'hoo' no no believer in blacks trying to get on "social equality with white people," he says, to expect the same "kinda" justice in the courts; the same "kinda" streets, the same "kinda" railroad and street, how that's social equality?
