The executive committee went over the above report carefully and found a few errors and officially notified me that a final audit by the committee showed that I had on hand $30.00 and requested that I tender them a check for said amount, which I did. At a subsequent meeting the check was accepted and was cashed by William Nickerson, Jr., treasurer of the extinct branch, who made it payable to Miss Georgia Hall, a clerk in his office. (The check is shown above.)
Now if I had misappropriated the branch's funds, did they not have the courts as a resort to either make me pay or induct me for embezzlement or misappropriation of funds? Why did these cuts wait until Mr. Patten died to try to spring a "sensation?"
We know the motive back of this journalistic abortion and if that long, lanky, consumptive African derelite, parasite and family-deserter, who turned it over for publication, had not tried to put the local branch in his vest pocket, and had spent more time trying to build up the branch and less time vainly and insidiously endeavoring to destroy Richardson, the local branch would not have died the death that has been its unhappy and unfortunate lot.

Due to the fact that Roy B. Nichols alleged republican county chairman who has the Harris County organization in the vetted pocket, he has been elected to the electors of Harris County the names of their pretect chairmen, by refusing to publish such information in any newspaper. The Informer is only able to print a few pretects' meeting place cards. The pretect came from Nichols, who is lord chairman county executive committee, secretary, treasurer and "embalmer" of G. O. P. Nichols has become so inoculated and intoxicated with "illity-whitism" that he has forgotten that he was a Harris County He is writing "fits" to his
Apropos the printed statement and accusation that as secretary of the Houston branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, I had a shortage of $194.56 and inappropriated and misapplied same to my own use, I wish to make a statement and ask the many thousand readers of The Informer to excuse me for the act. I am doing this not because I am particularly interested in nor concerned about the charge, but since a few black "bull-shevik" are demanding that we "keep the record straight," my wife and friends have insisted that I make a statement and put out all these charges and counter-charges. When the executive committee of the local branch asked for an audit of the books, the same were demanded without affording me an opportunity to make a report and because of the open hostility towards me by the chairman of the committee at the first audit, a new chairman was appointed and the auditing committee head, the late M. B. Patten and later the ex-president, H. L. Mims, went over the report together, and the executive committee adopted the report and accepted my check for the amount they said was held by me of the association's funds when the books were originally turned over to the auditing committee as proven by a fair and unbiased audit.

CELEBRATED WORLD ORATOR CAPTIVATED HUGE AUDIENCE WITH HIS MASTERLY ORATION
Speakers may come and speakers may go, but it remains for Colonel Roscoe Cohkling Simmons, the race's and world's most celebrated orator, like Tennyson's brook, to go on forever.
This fact was demonstrated last Sunday at the City Auditorium, when speaking before a crowd estimated between 4000 and 5000 American citizens, the colonel showed himself the complete master of the occasion and continued to bring down the house with his oratorical flights and his contention for a square deal for all men.
Despite the fact that the colonel was here during the winter, he was greeted by an even larger crowd than the one which heard him on his previous visit. From all nearby and adjacent cities, towns, hamlets and villages; in wagons, automobiles, on interurbans and trains, people came to Houston to hear this distinguished exponent of Americanism and republicanism.
The preliminary part of the program had prepared an excellent stage for the speaker: Rev. E. H. Holden had prayed a most fervent and impressive priest, the Mt. Zion Baptist Church choir had sung an inspiring anthem; the vocal duet by the little Misses Theresa Harris and Ida Mae Cannon, Houston's brightest and most brilliant little singers; the piano and violin duet by little Miss Maxine and Master Earnest Sapenter, Jr., the youthful instrumentalists of rare and marked ability; the eloquent and forensic introduction of the speaker by Hon. Milton H. Griffin of the American Mutual Benefit Association—all these numbers had worked the audience up to a high pitch of enthusiasm and therefore it required no extra amount of steam for the colonel to pull his train out from the station.
As soon as the colonel had launched into his speech, he began to recite the history of the republican party; the issues that brought the party into existence and its history, traditions, tenets and principles from the days of its incipency until the present hour. He observed that "if any man does not want to associate with me in the republican party because of my color, let him join the democratic party, where he belongs. The republican party is the party of man (universal and general); the democratic party is the party of men (class and caste)."
In his discussion of the princi
piles of republicanism and Americanism, Colonel Simmons challenged any "illy-white" in the a-dience, Houston, Texas or America, to come on the platform and debate the issue of the "illy-whiteism" against him; remarking that he would not employ the word "Negro" in his speech against his "illy-white" opponent and that he (Simmons) did not run his "illy-white" opponent and advocate of political elimination because of men's color off the platform, he (the colonel) would quit speaking. (If any "illy-white" or any of their black cattle were present, the cows refused to accept the challenge.)
He scored the black republicans for elevating such men as Macgregor, national committeemen from Texas, to positions of trust and power, for it was the motion and second of colored men that made him the supposed party leader in Texas, and now he is the arch-enemy not to the colored race so much, as he is to republicanism and Americanism. His "illy-white" leadership has reduced the voting strength to bare pittance, politically speaking and he and his henchmen have prostituted and raped the sacred tradition and history of the "grand old party."
The colonel lambasted those people styling themselves Americans, who raise race issues and who ever seek to arrogate unto themselves the power of a czar or kaiser.
He recited the part the black American has played in the history of America and claimed this country as his home; further remarking that his ancestors and the early founders of this country arrived in America about the same time, one on New England's "rock-ribbed coast" and the other on Virginia, "This difference, however," said the col

G. O. P. COUNTY
CONVENTION
MEETS MAY 4TH
The republican county convention will meet in Main Street (Beach) Auditorium, Tuesday, May 4, at 11 a.m. All genuine republican delegates, elected at precinct conventions, Saturday, May 1, are urged to be in their seats not later than 10:45 a.m., Tuesday.
onel," marked our advent upon these devoted shores; the pilgrim fathers came as first-class passengers and my ancestors came as steerage; but the same ocean brought us both." (Applause.)
He urged the true republicans to go to the precinct conventions Saturday, May 1, and swat "lily-whiteism" and all its henchmen and hangers-on; also to endorse the candidacy of Hon. E. H. R. Green of Kaufman County, Ed McCarthy of Galveston County, Wm. M. McChonale of Tarrant County and J. H. Grigaby of Harris County, as well as W. L. Davis as delegate from this (eighth) congressional district—all to attend the national republican convention, which will meet in Chicago, June 8, to nominate a president and vice president on the republican ticket.
For fully one hour and forty-five minutes the colonel made an earnest plea for a fair and square deal for all Americans and deal for as only a Simmons can for the Lincoln-Rosevelian species of republicanism and Americanism. At the conclusion of his speech the colonel was forced to shake hands with several thousand people and when he finally left the platform he was well nigh exhausted.
The visit of Colonel Simmons to Texas at this time is under the auspices of the Lincoln League of America, national organization, and a certain percentage of the net proceeds will go into the treasury of the national body to aid it in its fight for real democracy at home. The colonel is the national president of the organization and is a member of the republican national platform committee, composed of the leading republicans of the country. He is accompanied on his Texas tour by Hon. F. L. Gillespie of Chicago, founder and general manager of the Liberty Life Insurance Co., a legal reserve concern that expects to begin business by the first of next year. Mr. Gillespie is selling stock to our people throughout Texas and the South.
Texans will be delighted to know that Hon. Harrison N. Gillian, formerly of Denison and Houston, is the colonel's secretary and is making good at this capacity. Monday night the party was in Seguin; Tuesday, Bryan; Wednesday, Galveston; Thursday, Port Arthur and Beaumont.

President American Mutual Benefit Association, Houston, Texas.
In response to the insistent and repeated demands of so many re-
publican electors in different parts of Texas, who are urging him to
enter the race as one of the four (4) delegates from the state-at-
large to the Republican National Convention, which meets in Chica-
go, Ill, Tuesday, June 8, 1920, Hon. J. B. Grigsby of Houston,
after mature, deliberate and prayerful consideration, has decided
to accede to their wishes with the view of serving his race and party
and hereby announces his candidacy subject to the actions of the
republican voters of Texas in their precinct, congressional and
etate conventions.
Republicanism versus “lily-whiteism.”
Americanism versus internationalism.
Law and order against mob law and riot.
Justice and equality rather than injustices and inequalities.
Strict and rigid adherence to the constitution, its amendments and the
fundamental principles of our republican form of government,
He favors and shall labor indefatigably and untiringly for a new republi-
ean leadership in Texas that will not defile nor desecrate the ancient
landmarks and traditions of republicanism, but one which will be
truly and thoroughly representative of the republican constituency of
Texas.
He favors making America safe for Americans and the Texas republican
party safe for all genuine, loyal, true and tried republican electors,
Irrespective of color, ereed or class.
He is for principles above personal gain; measures above men; policies
‘above pelt; party fidelity and loyalty above mean and niggardly self-
ishness; Americanism above imperialism; politieal participation rath-
er than political elimination,
He opposes those men who would render and maintain the republican ma-
chine of Texas a federal patronage broker and gladly supports the
candidacy of Col. E. H.R. Green of Kaufman County and Hon. Ed
MeCarthy of Galvesion ‘as the two white delegates from the state-at-
large to the national convention.
He favors and shall work for an aggressive, progressive republicanism
Standing firm on the tenets and traditions of the “Grand Old Party,”
but sensing the imperative needs and demands of the times and reso-
lutely and courageously applying itself to the problems of reconstruc
tion, readjustment and realignment
He opposes proscription, either legislative or customary, in our body politic.
He favors and shall fight hard to forever maintain the republican organiza-
tion the party of THE PEOPLE rather than the party of A PEOPLE.
He favors the republicans putting out a straight state ticket, with all
candidates honest-to-goodness republican electors, as well as waging
fa fight for congressmen in the 9th, 10th, 14th and 13th congres:
sional districts, nominating able men for said positions.
He favors two white and two colored delegates to the National Republican
Convention from the state-at-large and calls upon all genuine republi-
cans to give him their endorsement and support.

VOTES CAST FOR HUGHES IN COUNTY. 1916:

$2000 CAMPAIGN
FOR LOCAL Y. M. C. A.
CAUSE NEEDS HELP
(BY MISS VIRGINIA B. MILLER.)
A great city-wide campaign, beginning April 26 and continuing for one week only, is now being planned in the interest of the Young Women's Christian Association, an organization that supports the welfare of girls and which stands conspicuously pre-eminent in achievements attained both at home and abroad for the betterment of womanhood; betterment of health; betterment of moral and religious life; betterment of education; betterment of industrial standards for girls, and last, but not least, betterment of chance for the colored girl.
In these fields of endeavor the girls evidence the Association's insincerity of its earnestness of desire, its sincerity of interest, its success of effort, and its definiteness of purpose, is its clubs, its cafeterias, its rest rooms, its grammisms, its health centers, its room registerers, its meals, and its employment branches.
These splendid provisions for girls and women are indeed deserving both of the appreciation and of the support of these communities in which they live.

Be sure to attend your preconference convention Monday, May 1, 1920, and elect genuine republicans to the county convention; vote for W. L. Davis for the 1920 election, and the 8th congressional district and for E. H. R. Green of Kaufman County, Ed McCarthy of Galveston County, Wm. M. McDonald of Tarrant County, and J. B. Grigley of Harris County as the four delegates from the State of Texas to the convention and all its benches and hangers-on!
which they are being planned under certain conditions.
The recent recognition of the colored branch of the Y. W. C. A. of Houston as a part of the National Association is the result not of a few officers, but rather of several years' struggle on the part of the few, the few who had the vision and who labored increasingly day of reality might surely dawn.
We are now seeing the light of a glorious dawn, but DAWN only will help us in the day of reality help, our men and women of means, help bring on the DAY! You can and
The uplift of our girls and of our women depends to a very great extent on the support of Y. W. C. A. depends upon you. With your support we can do everything, without it, to campaign effort, the white representatives of our association are going out for $80,000,000, building a new campus, asking only $200,000, the budget for 1920. This is all we ask, asking expense for the boys we are care for, the teachers, the parents and friends will not let us fall short of this amount. That asking for their pledges will be the toughest amount possible, especially when we say that this will be the only chance for that and we trust that at the close of the campaign it will be able to be said that the role of the girls and women themselves worthy of all that may be

HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, MAY 1, 1920
REAL ISSUE IN REPUBLICAN RANKS.
Despite the cantankerous cavortings and serving in the role of journalistic scavenger and buzzard by the chief paid newspaper hireling of the Texas "illy-white"s, the colored republicans of Harris County and Houston are not going to permit any political boot-licker to delude and deceive them and thereby deliver the race "lock, stock and barrel" to the "illy-white" regime in the Lone Star State.
There is only one issue in the republican party in Texas and all this hot air and windjamming about this and that is neither here nor there; it is simply political claptrap and camouflage employed for the express purpose of befuddling the republican electors of color and "selling out" the race to those enemies of the race within and without the party, who seek the elimination of men and women out of the republican party because of their color and in spite of their character and citizenship.
The chief spokesman of the black wing of the local "illy-white"s has no issue and being aided and abetted by a certain half-starved malcontent and chronic sorehead, who boasts of the fact that he is a "democrat" and never votes the republican ticket, this dirty little "sheet" has resorted to its old game of indulging in personalities, publishing a bunch of lies about those who are contending for fair play, a square deal, for human liberty, worldwide democracy and universal freedom—for "all men up and no man down."
The colored voters of Houston will never follow blindly any black man who possesses no qualities of leadership; one who flops and sides against his race on all matters affecting them for weal or for woe, for a financial consideration; a man that openly remarked in a meeting at Antioch Baptist Church a few weeks ago, that "I am for Mr. . . . . . because my wife works for him."
Some position for a race leader to take! What decent and respectable colored man or woman would hed the dope and "stuff" of such a jellyfish and human jackack? Supporting a man for office because his wife is a slave for that man and his family! Shades of the lamented Frederick Douglass and N. Wright Cuney!
This same political puppet and moral weakling is supporting MacGregor's and Roy Nichols "lily-white" policy, we presume, for the same reason as expressed at that meeting at Antioch—because they give his wife work and thereby enable her to take care of him, since his mud-slinging and journalistic "wampoo" are losing their earning power and his handout is less as a consequence.

of employing some of the time used in hunting up slime and mess about members of his own race to air it out in public paper, thereby failing to provide a decent living for his family, is not only unfit to be called a leader, but is a poor excuse of a man and will have his portion in that unquenchable lake of fire and brimstone.
But this has nothing to do with the precinct conventions, which will be held in this county Saturday, May 1, 1920, when delegates will be elected to the county convention, which will be held in Houston, Tuesday, May 4, 1920.
Find out, if you have not done so, when and where your precinct convention meets and be there in plenty of time, to participate in the affairs of your convention. Nobody has to elect you as a delegate to your precinct convention. The very fact that you are a qualified voter makes you a delegate to your precinct convention. Be sure and lay off from your work and there to be hit "ily-whiteism" and all its henchmen a solar plexus wallop.
The issue is whether the republican party in Texas shall be a "white man's party" or whether it shall continue to be the party of ALL THE PEOPLE.
If you favor political elimination and extermination because of the color of your skin and the texture of your hair, then vote with the "ily-whitees", you blame slave; if you favor political participation because of your citizenship and in spite of the hue of your skin, vote for republicanism and Americanism, you free man.
The Informer has an abiding and growing faith in the sincerity, fidelity and loyalty of our people, once they get the right information, and since that has been given you for several months, if you want freedom and liberty for yourself and children, elect true and tried republicans as delegates to the county convention; then endorse the candidacy of W. W. DAVIS as delegate from the eight congressional district; E. H. R. GREEN, ED McCARTHY, WM. M. McDONALD and J. B. GRIGSBY as the four delegates from the state-at-large. Swat "lily-whiteism" and political imperialism—enthrone republicanism and Americanism! Selah!

YOU CAN LEARN A LOT FROM ADVERTISING
main thing an advertiser wants to do is to to
just how and why his goods are worthy or

Because you can learn these descriptions of the things that are best and most

The main thing an advertiser wants to do is to tell you plainly just how and why his goods are worthy of your consideration. You can learn a great deal from that alone, because many things you see advertisements are the things you buy and use in your regular daily life. By reading the advertisements, you can learn the names and read descriptions of the things that are best and most satisfactory.
But advertising teachers more than that. All advertisers try to make their advertisements themselves valuable to you.
A good many people have learned a whole lot about good music, good books, good food, good clothes, ways to keep healthy, ways to live comfortably, ways to keep the house and grounds looking well—they've learned all these things and many other things just by reading advertisements.
Read the advertisements right along, and you will learn a lot that will be helpful and valuable to you as you go through life.

HON. MILTON H. GRIPFIN, member of the staff of the American Mutual Benefit Association, who covered himself with glory at the City Auditorium last Sunday in introducing Colonel Roscoe C. Simmons to that vast concourse of people.
"Friends, we are in the purple dawn of a new day and a new Negro is on the road," he said. "He holds in common with the Negro of yesterday is his universal love for those brave boys of our world, whose courage and strength in incubated into this race ever since those brave boys of our world have encountered the mightiest war man chine that man ingenuely coul in the past to kill him. Do you know that the ballot is the greatest weapon of defense ever conceived by human beings? Then, vote for E. H. R. Green, Ed McCarthy, Wm. M. McDonald and J. B. Griggsy as four delegates from state-at-large and W. L. Davis from this (the eight) congressional district—all to represent us in the national G. H. Convention, Chicago, June 8, 1920.
