VOL. II.
TABOR ORDER'S LEADING WHITE ATTORNEY WENT DOWN IN DEFEAT BEFORE TWO COLORED LAWYERS
Janitor E. M. Fisher, who feebly attempts to chase dirt and keep clean the Houston building which the Taborian order has made one payment on in four years, was singing it around the streets early last Saturday morning that he was "going down to the prayer meeting," etc. He was speaking about the cases of the Taborian order against C. F. Richardson and Dr. H. C. Lewis in Judge J. M. Ray's justice court on a writ of forcible detainer, which were called for Saturday.
The first case on the docket was the complaint against C. F. Richardson and The Houston Informer's attorney, Lawyer V. L. Allen, sent cold chills over the Taborian order's $2000 per year white lawyer in his answer to the petition of the plaintiff. Despite the fact that this brilliant colored lawyer cited the law and authority to bear him out in his general demurrier and special exceptions, the court overruled same and the case went to trial.
Taking nothing for granted Richardson's attorney had demanded a juryand after empaneling the jury, the fight was on. Janitor Emanuel Fisher was first called to the stand and all his testimony and evidence were riddled to shreds by C. F. Richardson, S. M. Gaines, Dr. H. C. Lewis and S. B. Williams and the cross-examination of Lawyer L. V. Allen, who demonstrated beyond a reasonable doubt that he must be reckoned with, for he completely put to rout one of the so-called "most influential white lawyers in Houston."
The facts in the case were presented to the jury and at the conclusion of the evidence and testimony, the jury retired, later bringing in a verdict of "not guilty." When this verdict was read, the Taborian's blind janitor and high-priced white lawyer had both mysteriously disappeared and the latter refused to return in the afternoon to push a similar case against Dr. H. C. Lewis, who was represented by Attorney S. H. Cavitt.
Due to the fact that Lawyer Allen had so masterly and masterfully conducted Richardson's case in the forenoon and had won such a sweeping and complete victory, this high-priced white lawyer, who gets $2000 of the colored lodge members' money every year for such failures, asked the court to give Dr. Lewis judgment and served notice of an appeal in both cases.
The old antiquated and ante-deluvian argument about colored lawyers can not cope with white lawyers was overwhelmingly refuted Saturday morning, when Lawyer Allen put to flight Squire Garrison of the firm of McMeans, Garrison and Pollard, the white law firm of the colored Taborian fraternity of Texas. Despite the fact that the court overruled practically every one of Lawyer Allen's objections, his victory was clean cut and deserving.

N. A. A. C. P WIRES BURLESON ABOUT R. P. CLERK'S LYNCHING: HOBBY ABOUT PARIS BURN-FEST
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People today wired Postmaster General A. S. Burleson requesting that he order an investigation into the facts of the lynching of James Spencer, a Negro postal clerk, at Enterprise, Miss., on July 5, reminding him of the fact that the federal government has the power of police protection over those in its service.
At the same time the Association wired Governor W. P.
HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, JULY 17, 1920.
The republican precinct convention will be held Saturday, July 24, at some hour and place to be designated by the chairman of each respective precinct.
At these precinct conventions—besides electing delegates to the county convention, which will be held in Houston, Saturday, July 31, at 11 a. m.—precinct chairmen will be elected. The precinct chairmen constitute the county executive committee, so see to it that no "lily-white" nor "lily-white" henchman is elected from your precinct.
All qualified voters, both men and women, as well as all soldiers and sailors with honorable discharge certificates, are eligible to participate in these precinct conventions.
Get in touch with your precinct chairman and find out the place and hour of your precinct convention and then tell every colored voter in your precinct. Make it your business to be there ahead of time and see to it that only genuine republicans are elected delegates to the county convention and elevate no man to the chairmanship of your precinct who even keeps company with the "lily-white" and that infernal and infamous "republican council of Harris County."
The precinct conventions of Saturday, July 24, are the most important on the politi cal calendar and The Informer urges every republican elector, who is anxious and determined to see right triumph ultimately in the Texas G. O. P. ranks, to be sure to attend said conventions.
If your precinct chairman fails to call a meeting or if you have no precinct chairman, get the qualified voters of your precinct together and perfect an organization and elect your delegates to the county convention.
Don't sleep on your political rights and don't permit the May steam-roller tactics to discourage you. Remember the battle is not to the strong, nor the race to the swift, but to him who knows no quitting and endures until the end.
"Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty." We possess the numerical strength in Harris County to get a fair and square deal, politically and otherwise, if we only employ our strength in the right direction. "Together we stand, divided we fall."
Go to your precinct convention Saturday, July 24 and swat "lily-whiteism" and autocracy—enthree republicanism and democracy.
Hobby of Texas asking that he bring to justice the members of the mob which on July 6, at Paris, Texas, took from the county jail Irving and Herman Arthur who were being held on a charge of having killed their landlord and his son, and burned them at the stake.
The barbary of this latter lynching is magnified by dispatches in which the sheriff at Paris, Texas, is quoted as declaring that one of the two Negroes burned was not the right one and that he doubted whether the other was the right party and in which he is reported to have gone into Arkansas on the trail of the men believed to have killed the farmer and his son.
HILL MAY NEVER FACE TRIAL IN HANG-'EM-ALL COURTS OF ARK. FOR IMPERSONATING OFFICER
Hot Springs, Ark.—Attorneys of Robert L. Hill, who is being held in jail in Topeka, Kansas, on the charge of impersonating an officer, say that Hill may never be tried. It is held that the acquittal of V. E. Powell, who was tried on a charge of conspiring with Hill to impersonate an officer, will in effect automatically acquit Hill.
Judge Treiber instructed that a verdict against Powell, for the testimony did not fall within the statute concerning the offense of impersonating an officer. It is said the Kansas federal judge may release Hill because it is said that the government could not present any stronger caes against Hill than it did against Powell.
Special to The Informer.

After investigation and a call Rip-Saw is forced to the conclusion Miss Irene Tusken at West Du June 14.
Not only did that young woman be by a highly reputable and e roborate the sensational story to Sullivan, but their tales do not r i nature, human experience and c All this being the case, there say nothing of reason, for bruta Negroes, thereby putting a last city of Duluth, to say nothing of ing the souls of the disciples of

The conclusion that six Negroes did not rape Wend Dulph on the night of Monday, a woman's physical condition, as diagnosis and experienced physician, fall to tortory told by Irene Tusken and William to not ring true. They do not square with e and common sense. s, there was not the slightest excuse, to brutality and unlawfully wangling three a lasting stain on the fair name of the killing of murdering the Negroes and doomies of lynch law and mob rule.

The two made the street car and the girl was taken to her home where she was taken to the police and her parents of the alleged outrage. Youn Sullivan went to the Minshee school where her father, Patrick B. Sullivan, is night superintendent of the St. Mary's School where the Sullivan lives at 337 Wicklow Street the St. Mary's School with her family at 488 West Sixth Street. The university is night superintendent of the a mail carrier and a man of repute. Young William Sullivan is alleged to have worked a couple of hours at the St. Mary's School and had been raped by six Negroes and that he had been. That is supposed to have been about 2 a.m. Tuesday morning, June 15. Superintendent Sullivan is alleged to have at once called up two other allegations. The police are credited with having received complainant T. Noble. T. Noble informs Office know of it before 4 a.m., too late to get into their last night. The circus was overlaid out near the Canadian-Northern town of Alberton, allied to the boy and the girl taken out there, but that both failed to single a name. Negro们 were taken to police headquarters and given a hard "sweating." It is known that the girl and the boy were locked up. At that time, at least six of them were looked up by the police. Robinson showed went on to Virginia City and it closed. Chief Murphy went up to the Queen City and it closed, it is closed. Now get down to a bit of analysis, dear reader, and not ring true or properly square up. Of course there are so many rumors and allegations that it is impossible not to uncover 15 years at 10 o'clock at the place.
There is no evidence that the boy fought or tried to defend the girl. He was a grain of sand would have fought despite under such circumstances. He was stuff about a recoverer being held in his head sounds too much like a Nazi prey. There is no evidence. There is no claim that the girl was or struggled. Her clothing was not torn when she got home, although it it stated that the mother said that one man was the alleged victim of the alleged attack, saying that also became unconscious when the Nazi (continued on Page Four.)

I dread the monotony of the commonplace. I seek, always, the thrill of the new and the original. To satisfy this desire The St. Clair System has been to be first in design—to lead the way to future improvements. In a never-ending succession of achievements, the system has changed stalled tendencies and quickened the pulse of Hair Culture to faster progress. Complementing this succession the St. Clair System has struck the chord of broad appeal. Individuality has been its dominant note. Originality has found expression in its classic contour and in every detail of its choice. The St. Clair System has urged ahead—I have concentrated my efforts exclusively on the development of HAIR CULTURE. In The St. Clair System—striking in its appearance, and efforts of these years find expression, in principle—the experience and actions of these years find expression, inating the new, it has come as the an advanced vogue in HAIR CULTURE for my price for list. workers will be visitors in our city this summer.
Mr. Nunes will present to the general public the educational and spiritual subjects along the lines of Biblical exegesis. Morality, health, involving simple treatments and nurses' demonstration, how to combat the high cost of living by the study of dietics and the science of eating, will be given.
Special feature of the Chaucaus will be meetings for all ladies, and all gentlemen, and the big four section meeting for married women and married women, single men and single women.
That we are living at a time that commands our very serious attention is begun by the women and women everywhere are asking "What do the present events mean?"
Subjects like "Seven Women and One Man," "Take Your Head Out of the Devil's Lap," "Smashing Heaven's Looking Glass," "Why Does God Not Destroy the Devil?" "The Future History of America and the War of Galilee," with many others, will make plain to honest seekers the meaning of the times in which we live.
The big tabernacle will be kept with taste to suit all particular people. Watch for the date of opening.

MANAGER REPUBLICAN CAMPAIGN |.”
AMONG THE COLORED PEOPLE :23'2::2.
‘The republican party, in carrying out its moral and legal obli-
ations with the bln fun, has falled miserably and sigaly 0
whieh failure and malfeasance there is no excuse nor alibi, save
that they were actuated by a spirit of moral and political coward-
ice
‘The republican party's sins of omission exceed its sins of eom-
‘mission regarding the black man. It has starved, exhausted and
‘exasperated the colored American with promises, which have nev-
er been fulfilled\neither will they ever be exeeutd.
The late republican congress refused to pass any anti-lynching
legislation, not even a bill for federal investigation of Iynchings;
and then ‘republican leaders prate voeiferously about the black
man’s eternal allegiance to the G. 0. P., thinking, perhaps, that we
are a bunch of geese.
If the republican party hopes to be vietorious in November, it
must carry 11 doubtful states in which the colored voters consti-
tute the balance of power.
‘Thousands of these electors are recent imigrants from the
South and they: have not forgotten how the republican party has
deserted them in Dixie and left them at the merey of their ene.
mies. ‘These voters constitute a mighty big political interrogation
point. :
‘Then there are thousands of colored voters who have lived North
for many years, who are independent in polities and vote for men
‘and policies rather than partios and platforms; for platitudes,
pledges and platforms are all “sounding brass and tinkling eym:
bals” and are “like the chaff which the wind driveth away.” They
are simply camouflage campaign fodder, degelving and delading
‘many poor mortals.
‘The “new Negro” is demanding a ‘new deck and a new deal.”
He asks that the cards be laid upon the table face upwards and he
Ss particularly anxious to know: “Where do we eome in?”
If the republican leaders can answer this question satisfactorily
during the next few months, it may be possible for vietory to
perch upon the standafd of the elephant; but if they fail to “come
clean” with the black brother, the donkey may bray from the
‘White House for four more years,

Doings of theRace _ #
‘Over the Country
: Every presidential election year there is a deal of discussion
| about the debt of gratitude the colored American owes the republi-
"ean party and republican leaders talk loud and long abput what the
:G-0.P. has done for the colored brother.
"These quadrennial dissertations on what the black man owes
‘the G. 0. P. are really amusing and while once upon a time such
hot air and “bull” had a salutatary effect upon colored voters, it
ia going to fail utterly with the “new Negro,” who thinks and acts
intelligently and without regard to bombast, bosh and bumeombe.
‘Whatever debt the colored American owed the republican party
{in past years has been more than paid, but what the ‘republican
party owes the colored American it is beginning to look like it
‘will never be paid.
Heretofore the republican-party' has herded the colored voters
like a bunch of eattle and because of the black man’s voting soli
arity the party leaders have concluded that they own the race’
votes and that they ean treat the race as they please and yet the
race will swallow it all down and stomach it at the same time.
‘Since the administration of Abraham Lincoln, down through
William Howard Taft's, excepting a few federal positions held by
colored Americans here and there, the republican party has stead-
fastly and religiously avoided doing anything tangible for the col
‘ored brother, but on the other hand the party has catered to and
‘played into the hands of the anti-republican, anti-Negro and anti-
‘American element of the country, all of whom do not reside in the
South.
‘On November 2, 1920, the electors of this country will vote for
f chief executive for another four years: Senator Warren G.
Harding of Ohio and Governor Calvin Coolidge of Massachusetts,
for president and vice president, respectively, on the republican
ticket; Governor James M. Cox of Ohio and Franklin D. Roosevelt
‘of New York, for president and vice president, respectively, on
‘the democratic ticket.
‘ust how the colored brother will east his ballot in the socalled
doubtful, debatable and pivotal states The Informer will not essay
‘to say just here; but if rumors and rumblings are any indications,
‘the colored voters are not hog-tied to the republican party any
longer in these states nor even in the Southern states, and some
strange political things are likely to happen.
Excepting Abraham Lincoln's administration, the second term
‘of Woodrow Wilson's administration did more for the colored
‘American than any preced/ng republican administration,
'No republican president ever denounced lynching and mob-law,
not even the lamented Theodore Roosevelt, who never spoke
fagainst such lawlessness and anarchy until the Bast. St. Louis|
Flot; yet Woodrow Wilson sent an appeal broadcast over the coun-
try decrying mobocracy and urging the American people to blot
‘out lynch law.
‘Under a democratic administration a colored American was pro-
‘moted to assistant secretary of war; colored officers were inducted
into the American army; colored railroad employes receive the
same pay as other men when engaged in the same class of work;
‘while the race generally received more recognition than ever ac
‘corded it by either a republican or democratic administration since
the days of Lincoln.
“The republican party was in power for 44 years and during that
time lynch law went on a rampage, aided and abetted by their
condolence of silence and pussyfooting tactics; disfranchisement
became the order of the day and millions of American eitizens were
denied their rights of suffrage in the South, while the republican
‘party stood supinely by and winked at and'slyly encouraged the
damnable and diabolical practice.
While laying such great claims to « humanitarian and altruistic
spirit, the republican party has been too cowardly to even attempt
{40 put an end to the un-republican, un-American and un-Christian
‘practices of the South and thus today jim-crowism, segregation,
fPeonage (human slavery) and injustice are stalking’ unchallenged
‘and unchecked over the Southland and the life of « colored Ameri-
‘ean is not worth a tinker’s damn.
As lightly as one might consider it, the plight of the colored
‘American in the South is due largely to the: indifference and
‘apathy of the republican party, which only wants and desires the
‘Votes of the colored Americans, but offers them no protection; in
Judging by their actions and general attitude, the republi-|

"Heavenly Houston
Offers unexcelled industrial opportunities to the colored man.
Greatest cotton center in the South, the fleecy staple being exported via the Houston Ship Channel, being handled by colored longshoremen and screwmen.
Largest inland port cotton market in the world.
Oil center of the Southwest, being near the producing wells of Texas and Louisiana, employing hundreds of colored men.
Cottonseed center of the Southwest, all plants employing a large number of colored laborers.
Large outpairy area north of the city, with a 25-foot depth; minimum width 160 feet, made possible at a cost of $50,000 per mile.
Has a ship channel 50 miles long, reaching to the sea with a 25-foot depth; minimum width 160 feet, made possible at a cost of $50,000 per mile.
Government recently appropriated money and county recently voted additional bonds to deepen the channel, which is our greatest natural asset, thereby making it (when the job is completed) without a parallel in the South and destinating the city as the premier municipality of the South.
Wharf and terminal facilities owned by the city, constructed of reinforced concrete, late style rat-proof buildings, costing $3,000,000. Free wharfage maintained. Two modern suction dredges, costing $200,000 each.
Has one of the best water systems in America. Those who drink this excellent water are never anxious about leaving this city for any other, either of this world or of the world to come.
Convention center of the Southwest, possessing a City Auditorium built by the municipality at the cost of $400,000 without issuing a single bond. It has a seating capacity of 6000 and can accommodate 10,000. It is fire-proof throughout and is often employed by colored churches, schools and other special occasions.
Has a Colored Carnegie library, being one of the few in the country or world. Colored citizens purchased the land for $1500; Andrew Carnegie furnished $15,000 for the building and city contributes annually for its upkeep.
Has one of the best educational systems in the South for colored children, operating 16 elementary schools and the high school, employing about 150 teachers and super-numeraries. The Houston graduates take front rank in the leading colleges of the country.
Has more churches than any other city its size in America, practically all of the denominations being represented.
Gives all kinds of employment to colored men and women and has one of the greatest colored citizenry to be found anywhere in the world. More colored people own their homes, or are buying them, than in any other American city.
Has progressive psychiatric desks and professional men. Has two colored hospitals, three secular newspapers and two religious publications.
Colored people are engaged in all avenues of business and some have made a very creditable showing.
Two colored fraternities own three large brick buildings in the business area of the city, in a block adjacent to the City Hall.
Has the finest colored motion picture house in the South.
Only city in the South that has a park maintained and supported by the city for the race; it is known as Emancipation Park, located in the residential section of the Third Ward.
One of the few Southern cities operating a home for delinquent girls of the race, as well as one for the boys. Maintains both male and female officers for incorrigible youths. Also plays colored social games. Possesses a Young Women's Christian Association Recreational Center, settlement house and Young Men's Christian Association Center for returned soldiers and sailors.

Will Open Its Fortieth Annual Session Tuesday, September 21,
1920, and Continue Thirty-six Weeks.
In spite of the increase in cost of many food supplies and other
school necessities, we have made only small advancement in our
rates this school year. The fees will be as follows:
Books are charged extra and will cost about $6.00, according to classification of student. About $40.00 will be required for the first month's charges, and $20.00 for regular fees each month after. All fees are payable in advance, and should be sent directly to the President. A penalty of 10% will be added to fees remaining unpaid for more than ten days after pay day, and class privileges may be denied.
We regret the delay in publishing our catalogue for this session on account of shortage of labor at printing office, but we trust it will soon be ready to mail to our patrons and students.
