TO REDUCE SOUTH'S REPRESENTATION? Black-and-Tans To Wage Hard Campaign Black-and-Tan Republicans Spring Startling Surprise; Put Out Full County Ticket Quite a surprise has been created in political circles by the action of the "Black and Tan" republicans of Harris County putting a full ticket in the field to contest against the "illy-white" in the county races. In mentioning the action, the Houston Chronicle in its Sunday issue announced: "The 'regulars' were surprised at the action and political observers were keenly interested in this development in local politics." The eighth congressional sixteenth senatorial and fifteenth representative district conventions were also held Saturday and candidates placed in the field. Delegates were present from all states and forming Harris County, and enthusiastic meetings were held. An adjourned session of the county convention was held, at which time the report of the committee on nomination made its report, which was unanimously adopted. This is said to be the first time in the history of Harris County that such a ticket has been nominated. The leaders expect to poll a heavy vote and to that end will continue opposing it. Everybody must attend and formally opposed to "illy-whiteism" is requested to boost the "black and tan" ticket and aid in rolling up a big vote Tuesday, November 2, 1920. VOL. II. Republicans Cry Out Against Crime of Disfranchisement As Source of Nation's Troubles Representative Isaac Siegel, Chairman of the reappointment committee of the house of representatives, has received a number of letters advocating the reduction of Southern representation in the electoral college, since he announced in the New York Times that his committee would take up seriously at the coming session of congress the representation in states where Negroes are disfranchised. According to Representative Siegel the question will be responded by his committee in response to an increasing sentiment in the North on the subject. Six of the nine members of the Negroes represent republicans and one of them, Representative Barbour of California, is a leader in the propaganda in favor of abolishing representation in Congress based on Negro population, which represents the representative Siegel pointed out any reduction of Southern representation would also reduce the Southern vote in the electoral college, each state having one elector for each of its representatives and two for its two senators. Letter From George B. Lockwood. In a letter to Representative Siegel, George B. Lockwood of Washington, D.C., editor of the National Republi How It Works in Virginia. "This is not a race question at all in fact, if these Southern democrats are to be elected, they would question, they would readily consent to a reduction in representation which would amount to a recognition of the existence of a race question, however, would put a premium on the expansion, rather than on the conformance of the state to the constitution, safely be assumed that, as a result of an honest apportionment, these states would be as many as it believed could safely be entrusted with the ballot. "Many Republican leaders and new members of the party have come into a lather about the horrors of robust borough representation in the United States, and have been given the task of white giving their tacit approval to the same system of representation in the congress of the United States and the state of New York, in the necessary detriment of every state in which representative government is in place." "Republican leadership had permitted democrats in and out of congress to make loud noises about expenditures and priorities in the primaries and elections in republican states, while keeping an absolute silence in the states of the solid South, which prized merely the name of the honourable president of the convention of President Wilson and his associate leaders that they actually stood for democracy." Even while the world that he was in favor of the domination of Mexico by the political party was not called to the fact that the peon of Mexico has vastly greater power in the world than the peon of Mississippi. Urges Next Congress to Act. "It is about time for the republican to demonstrate a matter matter to voters or jelly backbone. In the face of bourbon spooning of the intelligence of the executive, republican leadership has long been plant and yielding. This leader is a leader." OLD RESIDENT PASSES AWAY. Ever since the exposure of disfranchisement methods in the South, and particularly in Georgia, by Colonel Henry Lincoln Johnson, before the Senate investigation committee, threats of many kinds, instinations and inuences have been made against the life and life of the colonel. A representative of the Associated Negro Press took the matter in with him and sought to learn his feelings on the subject. He said: "Do you wish a news story. Well, you can tell the truth. You can tell an address on the campus of Morris Brown College, Atlanta, before the greatest throng of people ever assembled in Georgia. I am going to tell them the truth as I see it, and I will send an invitation to every newspaper in Georgia, including the daily, and I am going to invite the members of the Georgia legislature, and all persons who have had anything to say about the situation, and them to be present to hear me." NO MAN IS ENTITLED TO MORE AND NO MAN SHOULD RECEIVE LESS. —ROOEVEULT. HOUSTON, TEXAS. SATURDAY. SEPTEMBER 4, 1920. INTIMIDATION OF NEWSPAPERMEN. The attempted midnapping of Editor G. V. Sanders of the Houston Press by the military forces of Galveston, which militaristic stunt was staged at the local Country Club Monday night, shows to what extent men will go who are clothed with a degree of unusual authority, especially when they are mentally unprepared to cope with the situations that arise. That actuates the mob to take the law into its hand and summarily mute out punishment to those who are in bad with its members. Because he protested, Editor M. E. Foster of the Houston Chronicle was also threatened, as well as City Attorney Kenneth Krahl. It seems that the military authorities, who have supreme power in Galveston, had issued a warrant for the arrest of Editor Sanders for publication of certain articles in his paper considered "incendary" by the military powers-that-be. Such order could only be executed within the zone of martial law and attempt to forcely arrest and lapse Editor Sanders in the city show the pernicious changes in delegating some men with plenary power and the menace of martial law under conditions as prevail in the Island City. There seems to be a widespread effort to stifle and intimidate the press, simply because some newspapers publish the facts and play no favorites. The newspaperman that tries to please everybody in the conduct and operation of his paper, in the end will please nobody and his paper will succumb because of a lack of a definite policy and so necessary to secure and retain subscribers and advertisers. Nobody wants to subscribe for nor advertise in a newspaper without a journalistic backbone; that is wishy-washy and nambly-pamby; that refuses to print all real news and have some editorial opinion on the questions of the day. That it does not stand to reason that it is "incendious, radical and dangerous"; nor should the brand be enmarched as an "agitator", "fierd", and such rot. The suppression of the facts concerning offenses against society, the refusal to indict and punish the violators of the laws, and infringement of the rights of the people in a democratic republic by intimidation, duress, innuendoes and threats from those serving in unusual positions do more to kindle a flame of insurrection than to suppress them. Foreseeing this with a prophetic eye and being divinely inspired, the founders of this country, who came hither hunting for a land for freedom of speech and worship, laid the foundation for the execution of this principle in the constitution of this republic and of the several states in the union, and who endeavor to divest editors and publishers of its constitutional right prove themselves enemies to their country. That it does not stand to such procedure, as well as the spirit underlying cause in the Sanders incident, either from military authority or any other body or organization. ORGANIZE HARDING-CAPERS CLUBS. The Informer wants it distinctly understood among our people, since they constitute the bone and sine of the republican party in Texas, that the "black and tan" republicans of Texas will support and vote for Harding and Coolidge as the national standard-basement but under no circumstances must true and tried republicans vote for any county or state officer placed on the ticket by the "illy-white's. Where the "black and tan" do not put out a county ticket and the "illy-white's" do, let every colored voter run a line through all their candidates. In every community where colored republicans reside, let them organize Harding-Capers clubs and interest every voter in their district to vote for the "black and tan" republican candidates and presidential electors. Don't hesitate in perfecting an organization of these Harding-Capers clubs and write immediately to Harry Beck, 524 Linz Building, Dallas, Texas, for all information. ORGANIZE YOUR HARDING-CAPERS CLUBS NOW! THE HOUSTON INFORMER. SATURDAY. SEPT. 4. 1920 PAUL'S MESSAGE STIRRED EPHESUS. PAUL'S MESSAGE STIRRED EPHESUS. When the Apostle Paul preached such a powerful gospel and proclaimed the time ripe for a new order of things in Ephesus during his series of missionary itineraries, it caused a great excitement and uprue in the city of the Greeks and the "old timers" worked themselves into a frenzy. It seems that Paul's message on the risen Christ had struck a sympathetic chord in the hearts of some of his hearers, while on the other hand it struck terror in the hearts of wrong-doers and those who profited by the manufacture and sale of trinkets and other metallic idols to Diana, whom the Ephesians revered and worshipped as a gift from Jupiter buried from Mount Olympus. They admitted that Paul was a brainy man, but the thing that gave the "old timers" much concern was the fact that he was gaining adherents in the proclamation of his "strange" gospel and their popularity would wane and their income fall off as a consequence of his preaching. Demetrius, the silversmith magnate and boss, and his union, saw the shekels slipping from them, for belief in the message proclaimed by Paul meant no more miniature idols of Diana and exploitation of the hoi poli. Paul's message had the right ring to it and his scholarly presentation of his new gospel and expose of the "old timers" made the corporate heads and those serving as their tools, sore, and, thus by browbeting, intimidation and the mob spirit, they sought to drive him from their midst and destroy his growing popularity and counteract his great work for religious democracy. These "old timers" could not stand the idea of a "new comer" drawing the people unto him with his preachments and thus he at once became persqna non grata. These "old timers" called Paul a radical, agitator, malcontent, fiend and trouble-maker; as one trying to incite a riot and array one group against another. His short resilience in their city gave him no right or liberty to preach any gospel or doctrine that was not first censored and reviewed by the "old timers" and henchmen of the silvermens' corporation. These "old timers" were not interested in the city so much as they in proving their faithfulness and loyalty to a big corporation, which virtually controlled the city and had such a hold upon affairs that even the city fathers strove to do nothing that met the disapproval of this greedy and avaricious octopus. Paul was not swayed one whit from his course of argument by their opposition and by proving himself loyal to his cause and faithful to his Leader, the cause of Christianity triumphed ultimately. Any man that swerves from the path of right and rectitude because of opposition and sulks away to his tent at the least disturbance, always ready to apologize and make amends for his position, is unfit for leadership and will work untold harm upon and injury to the cause he professes to represent. If you are right, pay no answer, threatens, plots, insults and pummeled intimidations even of the big corporations and their jumping jacks and hair-bouled bullets, for righteous principles will prevail finally and permanently. Men may delay, but they cannot stay, the inevitable. Their every attempt to thwart the onward march of the forces of right serves as an impetus rather than an impediment and all their bluffs are in reactionary effect. "Be what you are, right and then go ahead." Motorman Not Losing Any Time SENATOR HARDING ON RACE'S RIGHTS "I don't think anyone ever suffered more from stomach trouble and bleaching than I have. I had to lay on my bed and get help from the doctor, not help from prescriptions or medicine. One of my friends advised using Maya's wonderful Remedy, which is supposed to ever put on the earth. I have not lost a day since taking it. It is worth keeping it on. I have not harmed the harmless preparation that removes the catarrhal mucus from the intestinal tract and allays the inflammation in the colon. I have also ach. Liver and intestinal aliments, including appendicitis. One dose will convince or money refunded. Pursue your doctor's advice." "Much of a high sounding nature, much of a democratic democracy, but no one can pretend we are making any progress in establishing a democratic government in the United States. It will be the greatest political injustice that we have ever faced. We plate a situation under which the brave colored men of the South took such valuable liberty as to return to dittions under which they are denied the freedom of franchise as citizens of the United States. Senator Warren G. Harding to Hon. Joseph C. Manning, June 11th. And this: "I believe the Negro citizens of America should be guaranteed the enjoyment of all their rights, that they will be protected by the citizenship bestowed, that their sacrifices of blood on the battlefields of the republic have entitled them to all of freedom and opportunity, all sympathy and aid to the victims of fairness and justice demand." Cleanliness was her hobby and orderliness her living principle. Half of her time was spent in certain guardianship over her grown-up charges as if the care had been left to her as a heritage. Almost unconscious nieces and husbands and children were in her care, the ways of the exacting and at times mandatory severe taskmaster. She had made herself a blessing to the disrupted household, however, and they were very strict discipline as to meal hours and those of rising and rearing. "An Aunt Lavinia is good as gold" observed her sister, and her sister, but it is really a relief to get a change of atmosphere during our month at the seashore. "Yes, but she may wish to go with "I hope not," said Estelle, but the very next day Aunt Lavinia announced that she had decided to close up the house during July and keep it warm. "I don't know of the three children." if she would be welcome. "You are going to Portland Beach, Essex, or New York. Well, I don't like the strong sun air. You told me you were going to spend two weeks at Clear lake, Cyril. That was the best part of the trip. The sisters were filled with secret joy. Cyril Dowe looked dumfounded. The charge of his old relative was that he was not at all welcome. Her constant presence would involve a devotion to whims and wishes that he would be present to ment his face face and his eyes were clouded. Then with a brave smile he conquered his fear of the unknown and self-sacrifice of this sterling, worthy woman entered his soul. "He said gently, "I shall feel it a proud honor to give you the time of your life. You deserve the earth on earth and shall deserve the sun on sun." "You delightful big boy" enthusiased Miss Merton, with tears in her eyes. "No wonder I love you as if you were Cyril did not tell his relatives, but he had an object in selecting Clear bake as a vacation spot. The season came and he was mainly among a group a Miss Vera Blake. He had never before been so impressed and a memory of her fair face had been taken. That she came to the lake annually and hoped the opportunity would materialize to renew the acquaintance relationship. It is that Aunt Lavina was surrounded by every comfort at the resort hotel. Miss Blake had not arrived, but Cyril heard, was expectant, and was ready. His favorite recognition was cunning. Aunt Lavina accompanied him several times, and one afternoon had come as far as the beach and had come as a wrap, when she said: "I am so tired of the water in a storm, Cyril, and I think we are going to be here." Not before we have first-come a trip," declared Cyril, and as a lady invariably set in her epitaphs. Miss Lavina returned to the hotel and Miss Lavinia's prediction came true an hour later. The wind blew and the rain fell, and Cyril was making a carriage of a canoe nearly half a mile off shore contending vainly with the rising elements of the tectonic earth, apparently in a whirling craft. Then it captured outright and the imperiled being, who she was clung desperately to, Cyril could make no progress against the baffling whirl, but a quick suggestion came to him. He was impressed, and the captain opened it, and with this unique sail was home through the water straight toward the spot where the accident occurred. He was delighted, and entrancing lady of his choice, as he decided before his delightful vacation had come to an end, for the unexpected preceance and beloved in the eyes of the peerless Vera. He kissed Lavinia with a smile, and the day he became Vera Blake's fance, and she thrilled and quivered when Cyril told her that but for her umbrella he never must have won his life's hap-p THE HOUSTON INFORMER, SATURDAY, SEPT. 4, 1920 L.
