"BLACK AND TANS" BEGIN CAMPAIGN
Circuit Judge "Fired" Grand Jury
ARKANSAS JUDGE SERVED IN STRANGE AND PECULIAR ROLE. AFTER GRAND JURY BALKED
Lewisville, Ark.—A special grand jury returned an indictment charging Clark Burns (white) of Stamps with first degree murder for having caused the death of Haytice Brazwell, colored, last spring.
The regular grand jury which filed its report reported that it had no indictment against Burns. Circuit Judge C. R. Hawnie then demanded the documents in the case. The foreman of the grand jury replied that the papers had been stolen. Judge Hawnie promptly ordered the jury discharged and a special one empaneled. The special grand jury after three hours of deliberation returned the indictment.
According to the evidence, Burns and Brazwell were working together in a mill at Stamps and guarded. They had a fistic fight in which Brazwell decisively whipped the white man. Several other employees of the mill testified that after the fight Burns tried to borrow a revolver from them and finally succeeded in borrowing a knife. It was testified that he then summoned the constable and caused Brazwell's arrest. While Brazwell was in charge of the constable who was taking his prisoner to court it was testified that Burns attacked him with a knife, inflicting wounds that caused Brazwell's death.
NEW RATES EFFECTIVE TO AGENTS AND SUBSCRIBERS BEGINNING OCT.1,1920
Owing to the scarcity and high price of newsprint, the management of the Houston informer will be forced to sell newspapers to the sales prices, effective the week embracing October 2, 1920.
Starting the week of September 27, both city and foreign agents will pay 4 per copy for papers, where they are paying 2.50 now. To illustrate: Agents handling 30 papers will pay $1.20 for same, where they are only paying $0.60.
Subscription rates will be advanced as follows from the same period: One year, $2.50; nine months, $2.00; six months, $1.50. No papers will be mail subscribers either in or out of the city for less than six months.
News dealers and greet agents will sell The Informer for 70 per copy. This increase is made imperfect by the unsettled price of newspapers, the present outrageous price on print paper.

Candidate H. Capers Enlightens Political Foes on Republicanism; To Push Relentless Campaign
"Black and Tans" Appoint Committees To Collect Funds and Push Campaign; Opening Rally Wednesday Night
"Black and Tan To Collect O
That the "black and tan" republican faction does not mean to simply four-flush and stage a comedy skit, was demonstrated at a recent meeting of the various chairmen and candidates, when plans were mapped out for the fall campaign.
Already much interest is being evinced in the ticket, and reports from leaders in the various parts of the districts and county bespeak a healthy vote for the ticket.
The leaders plan a campaign of protest and education, but will not resort to muck-raising and mud-slinging. Issues and not individual's principles and not men's measures and not men will constitute the major question in this campaign.

er; without their votes. Mr Harding can not be elected.
Maybe that the speaker does not know that Judge Hughes got 2,600 votes in Dallas and 2,200 in Chicago, but the speaker's mother had taught him the Bible, he might have learried that Moses, the greatest lawgiver on earth, married a colored woman. I am confident she looked to Moses, and that Brother Peter was a "black and tan" republican, for Peter said, "I perceive of a truth that God is no respecter of persons, but in every nation he that worketh righteousness is accepted with Him." Peter further said, "I should not call any man mon or unclean." (Acts 10. 1) God doesn't judge people by the color of their skin, but by their deeds. If the speaker would take a paper and read, he would learn that the American Negro had no right of him about fifty years ago by the republican party. Then they were penniless and helpless and homeless; not one of them in ten thousand could read; they were the prey of greed and grafters, that they have stemmed the tide of despair against them; and the census 10 years ago showed that they

The collections and expenditures will be published after the campaign ends, as was done after the May campaign. No contribution will be considered too small or too large to aid and assist in pushing the cause of OUR CANDI-DATES. This fight will be waged for principle and not for peril, and the cause rests with the people, who can be counted upon in every crisis and undertaking for the race's

owned 350,000 homes. They have built churches, schools and colleges all over the country, which would be creditable to any nation. Out of these have come thousands of preachers, teachers, merchants and all kinds of craftsmen, who would do honor to any nation.
A shrewd Texas magazine written, after hearing Rossee Simmons speak to 3000 people at a craftsmen's convention, any of the candidates for governor could make such a classic, eloquent speech, he would be elected easily." Those "illy-whites" may think that they are republicans, but I want to tell them that no man is a republican. He is a leader of the 14th and 15th amendments to the constitution; he may be a Hittite, a Pazarite or hermophrodite, but he is not a republican, because the republican party was conceived and born to write these amendments of the republican party. "A illy-white" republican is like a Baptist who never has been baptized; he is NOT a Baptist.

FLOGS MAN WHO INSULTED HIS COLORED COOK ON FISHING TRIP; VICTOR PRAISED, LOSER FINED
Sault St. Marie—The employer of a colored cook here came off victorious in a rough and tumble fight last week. The victor won the compliments of the crowd and the loser got a fine from the judge.
Two white men were out in a fishing party, when one of them, who thought the colored cook was not moving fast enough, began to abuse her. The employer took up for his cook, and threshed his guest before a crowd of admiring onlookers. The cook went on about her duties as if nothing had happened.

With Splendid Program
Editor C. F. Richardson was the principal speaker at the "National Drive for Justice" program, held on the lawn of Boynton Chapel's new playgrounds, Lila and Lamar, Wednesdays night. He used as a theme "Justice for the Basic Principle of Democracy." Music was furnished by the Y. M. C. A. band, and Pastor S. W. Johnson served as master of ceremonies. A judge and appreciative audience was present.
Meetings of this nature were held all over the country Wednesday, being a unified drive for justice for colored Americans.

There will be special band music and the various church choirs are invited to be present and render a selection. All qualified voters, male and female, are urged to be present and filing.

THE WOMEN VOTERS NOT EASILY BLUFFED; WILL VOTE OR ELSE
That colored women in the South enfranchised by the woman suffrage amendment, will be less easy to intimidate out of voting than men, is the result of the national association for the Advancement of Colored People. "Colored women are not going to be enfranchised," the nation, "nor are they going to submit to disfranchise as readily as colored women, nor are they going to test against prejudice during our years is proof of that fact." Frustration is urging its branches throughout the country to form classes for the training of more enfranchised women in the dues system.

LESSON FOR SEPTEMBER 26
REVIEW: SAUL, DAVID AND SOLOMON COMPARED.
BELIEF FOR READING: Pamela T. Hunt, "The Lord Looked Upward appearance," and the Lord looked upward appearance, and the Lord looked upward appearance.
PRIMARY TOPIC: SCIENCE: Abident David, JUNIOR TOPIC: THREE WINGS and How

INTERMEDIATE AND SENIOR TOPIC
—Three Kings and Their Attitude Toward
the Lord.
YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULT TACTICS — Truths and Excellences of David K. David
It was the lesson committee's thought that the three kings of the united kingdom should be compared, but that would necessitate going back to the ancient quarters, and since the time for review is so short, it would hardly be wine for any but the adult classes to go to. The lesson committee should confine the review should be rapid and confined to: the character of the king.
2. The chief events of his reign.
3. His success or failure, as the case may be, and the reason therefor.
The better method for most teachers and classes will be to let the lessons center in the two outstanding leaders, and as a mental discipline and as a spiritual message. A good way is to get the punk to grasp the main facts of each lesson and then state its lead-up.
**Lesson for July 4.** David's zeal for God and Faith in God made him courageous to meet Goliath. His good sense and courage arm and his own gifts. He went forth in the name of the Lord of hosts that all 'the world might know that there was a God in Israel. His friendship between Jonathan and David was based on genuine love. Because of this love Jonathan waived his personal rights to David, as a token of which he had been given equipment. "Truly 'Love seeketh not her own.'"
**Lesson for July 4.** David's regard for Saul was due to the fact that he had been upon him. The one upon whom God has placed his Spirit should be reverenced, not because of what he is himself, but because of God's gift upon him.
**Lesson for July 28.** David's behavior through the period of civil war between the houses of Saul and David won the confidence of all the tribes, and he helped to Heaven and made him his king.
**Lesson for August 1.** The great lesson needed to be learned by all men is God's holiness. His name and power of innocence or thoughtlessness will not save a man from the penalty of violating God's laws.
**Lesson for August 8.** Justice and judgment were executed unto all the people when David was established king. This is typical of the time when Christ, David's Son, shall reign in his kingdom. David was occasioned by his sins. "Whatsoever a man sown that shall be also reap."
**Lesson for August 22.** Despite the awfulness of our sins, true penance and confession will bring pardon.
**Lesson for August 29.** Because Solomon first, God gave him honor and riches in abundance. "Him that honoreth me, I will honor."
**Lesson for September 5.** A house is made sacred only as God's presence sanctifies it. It was not Solomon's words or his prayer that dedicated the temple; it was the manifestation of a love for him.
**Lesson for September 12.** God's gifts to Solomon made him to be great before the world. His fame gave him an unique opportunity to witness the glory of God.
**Lesson for September 19.** Those who heed the advice of a father will escape all the sorrows and miseries of a drunkard.
The Hardest Labor.
Ceasing from labor, as labor, is not the point of Sunday observances; it is ceasing from the labor of the world, which we work in. We work which is the highest labor and the hardest labor; giving God a title of the work, the first fruits of our time, a mark of respect and allegiance which we owe in him.—W. C. E. Newman.
True Gentleness.
True gentleness is founded on a sense of what we owe to him who made us, and to the common nature which we all share. It arises from reflections on our own fallings and wants, and from just views of the condition and the common nature of our heightened and improved by principle. —Blair.
Politeness. Politeness has been well defined as benevolence in small things. Macau

ARKANSAS POINTS THE WAY!
ARKANSAS POINTS THE WAY!
The decision of the secretary of state and attorney general of Arkansas to place the name of a colored American, Prof. J. H. Blount, on the ticket to be voted upon as a candidate for governor of that state, should have a sobering effect upon the louth-mouthed Africans in Texas who have life membership in both the "I-told you-so" and "Amalgamated Order of Knockers" clubs.
In a democratic republic or in a republican democracy, men's only political redress lies in the formation of parties that are expressive of the will of the majority of the constituents of said party and the full exercise of the elective franchise rights.
When the republican bison-bearer drove the will of the people and maneuvered their steam-boiler over the late Theodore Roosevelt in 1912, their action sounded the death-knell of the party for at least eight years.
Mr Roosevelt and his followers knew that with a divided house they could not defeat the democrats, but the bosses were intoxicated with years of power and drunken men never listen to reason; they are not susceptible to logic until they have become sober again.
The republicans in several of the Southern states are "lit up," politically; and like Roosevelt and his warriors, it is up to the citizens that denied and robbed of their partisan rights to protest in a manner that will attract the attention of the country and lay bars the infamy and high-handedness of the "illy-white" leaders in Dixie.
In Texas, just like in Arkansas, the colored republicans have been freed from the G. O. P. fold, with this exception, that their members have been augmented by a large number of white republicans who are opposed to drawing the color line in the party of Lincoln. Grant and Roosevelt.
These "illy-white" bosses have wilfully and maliciously disregarded the expressed will of the people and have become inoculated with an anti-republican and anti-American virus. They would prescribe and prescribe certain limitations for republicans of color and would build up a white man's party, hoping by so doing to attract the disgruntled, dissatisfied and discontented audience. They, themselves, have drawn the line of battle and in putting out state, district and county tickets, their opponents, better known as the "black and tans", have done the manly and proper thing under the circumstances.
The black man constitutes fully 85 per cent of the republican party in Texas and the usurpation of power by these enemies to republicanism and Americanism left him no alternative save an independent ticket, which is legal and provided for by the statutes of the state of Texas.
The charge has been made that such a movement will affect our national status; but this assertion is base and false, and is merely employed overtime to delude the colored voters who is anxious to cast a ballot for Harding and Coolidge.
Both factions will vote for its own presidential electors for Harding and Coolidge, the only difference being in state, district and county tickets.
The "illy-white" bosses have stated that they represent and control the majority of the voters in Texas and the placing of two tickets in the field will prove to the country and national leaders the fact that the voting strength and may bring to a termination the strife and schism among republicans and pseudo-republicans of Texas.
From past and present performances and utterances, the colored republicans of Texas can hope for absolutely nothing from the present "illy-white" regime and their path of manifest duty lies straight ahead in the course they are already pursuing. The current Republican republican can support such an autonomic political oligarchy; it will not justify his manhood and sell his birthright for a mess of porridge.
The national republican platform spoke out against lynchings yet the platform of the Texas "regulars" was as silent on this grave and momentous question as the sphinx.
Candidates Harding and Coolidge have committed themselves for justice for colored Americans, while the "illies" are dishing out the truth of the crimes that are nothing but "sounding brass and tinkling cymbals."
The national candidates would make America safe for Americans, while the Texas regime would make the republican party

in this state a white man's political habitat, with this placard posted conspicuously on the door: "NIGGERS AND DOGS NOT ALLOWED!" The colored man's political and economic emancipation can not be secured and safeguarded by swallowing the platform, program and policy of the "illy-white" dynasty in the Lone Star State. It is calculated to give him political and economic indignation, with direful after-effects. The Arkansas gubernatorial republicans have shown the way and it is the republicans of color in Texas, and those of other races who believe in a republican party for all republicans, to go to the pola Tuesday, November 2, and vote for Harding and Coolidge and the "black and tan" ticket.

ANARCHY IN TEXAS AND NEW YORK.
ANARCHY IN TEXAS AND NEW YORK.
Well, the expected happened, and while it is to be deplored and condemned (as was to be expected), the name of Texas has been stained and besmirched by the demonstration of savagery and brutality at Angleton last week. The guards offender, who had murdered the sheriff of Brazoria County and wounded the authorities to the authorities—despite the severity of his crime—deserved a fair and impartial trial and if the death penalty had been assessed (as was almost certain) he should have atoned for his crime at the hands of those whose duty it is to execute the court's edicts.
But since lynching has become an American pastime and sport, the authorities knew full well that the life of the colored criminal was not worth a tinker's dam in the little shacky prison at Angleton. The court's decision to acquit and permit the courts to function, they could have easily brought the accused man to Houston for safe keeping.
When I got true wid my surmign, drempt I got, 'biteter or thin dime; dat darkey won't make no mo' coftie remark bake me to kill him kumshenu. I bethee he don't oppose enny mo' project's puta forward. If he do Im' is gwinter use my hi callin, es shepherd er de flock ter gin em — well tat wgain
But what is the life of a "nigger criminal?" some will ask and pass the incident by as a mere happenment not out of the ordinary. It is not the color or racial affiliation of the victim that should concern the case, but the suspect for law and order and due processes of the courts of justice.

With mob-law law running rampant and with the various communities infected with lynchocratic hydrophobia, the life of no American citizen will be safe and anarchy and arson will supplant orderly government. The underlying cause of the bomb plot and explosion in New York's financial district, which exacted its toll in loss of life, maimed bodies and destruction of physical property?

NEW WOMEN'S STORE
OPENS IN FIFTH WARD
IS BEAUTIFUL PLACE
These foreigners (who, by the way, are accorded more universal rights than the native colored American) are not foolies; they are cool and deliberate calculators and lay all their plans with wonderful precision, being close students of human psychology. They are mobsbred burned and otherwise tortured and inhumanly treated and have seen how the perpetrators go unpunished. They have watched how this country has come to regard its oaths and obligations towards its own citizens and have noticed the cringing and cowardly policy and attitude of those custodians of the law-enforcing department of the government when lynch-law supercedes orderly government and when trial and execution the mob supplant trial by jury and its resultant punishment.
On all sides in the Fifth Ward new businesses are springing up—marked evidence of progress, growth and—in some cases, the unique appearance of ropellan appearances. The new home of the Booker T. Ward business—the latest structure to grace this celebrated Fifth Ward business-residential street and its modern appointments clamp it as a centerpiece of the city.
The Wall Street disaster and the Angleton lynching are effects of the same cause, and while the former shocked and stirred the country, its death list does not exceed those put to death in America this year by the mob.
The latest - business venture on Odnin is Eibel's Shop, an exclusive woman's and misuses' emporium, which is officially opened Saturday, September 25.
Anarchy, whether by the red terrorists of foreign extraction or by the native disciples of force and lynch law, is political tuberculosis; yea, it is a cancer eating away the very vitals of our government.
This store will specialize in ready-made products for the needs of the species, and already has a swell line of goods direct from Paris, France. The place is neat and attractive, and the staff is friendly and helpful.
Soviet Russia and its worst type of bolshevism; the unspeakable Turk with his unspeakable atrocities; the brutal and barbarous Hun with his Hunnish "kultur"—all these exponents of vioce and violence are as angels of mercy compared with the American mobster.
The proprietress, Miss Ethel Jacobs,
wished to provide a year of experience along this line,
and assures her prospective patrons
that she will provide courteous treatment, fair prices, and
courteous treatment.
To show the brazen audacity and unmitigated gall and affrontery of the Texas and New York anarchists, both stunts were staged in broad daylight. One's victim was a defenseless black man, while the other's was captains of finance and industry. Blot out mob law and bomb throwing will be reduced to a minimum.
The store is located in the Bookke

floor, 220 West 42nd Street,
opening is for the general public; so
calls are inspected and inspect the season's

We should have no place in our American civilization for either the foreigner employing the bomb and other infernal machines of destruction or the native born resorting to lynch law and arson in wreaking his hellish and heathenly meanness upon American

GREAT TEACHER GONE TO HER REWARD
The informer has received the sad intelligence of the death of Miss Marien D. Barker, which occurred in California on the 8th st. Mary's College, Baltimore, Maryland. In the English department of Bishop College, Mary's College, Texas she was recognized as one of the most efficient English teachers engaged in schools for exclusive education of the colored youth. Her list of well-known in Ohio, her father being one of the pioneer Bapist preachers in the Buckeye state.
Her brother, Dr. C. E. Barker, former health advisor to President William H. Taft, has delivered several lectures in this city on how to retain good health, etc., and is regarded as an authority of no mean ability along this line.
The deceased was a friend to the colored race, particularly, and spent the best years of her life in contributing her "bht" toward the anilization of the race. She was a more than a mankind, generally speaking, and she always strove to emulate the Great Teacher in rendering an unselfish service unto her fellowness.
She never believed in the capabilities and possibilities of the colored race and always gave the best that she possessed to her pupils, who with the Informer, deplore her untimely denise.
Bishop College has lost an efficient and able teacher and a strong Christian character, one who stamped herself infinitely upon those who were her students.
"Mamma, I want a pair of school shoes." Mary said. "I bought Mary at the Boston Shoe Store. They sure do look good and she says they are made of Alhoney leather you shall have a pair."
Measured by the Divine plumb line, Miss Barker fulfilled the requirements in a most stridest manner and in her passing the race has lost a true and tried to continue.

Only One Thing Now
Lacking—Money
"I have doctored nine years for stomach and liver trouble and spent thousands of dollars, but instead of becoming cured of these alliments, my bloating and pains and attacks became worse. I was persuaded a year ago to have never suffered since taking the first dose. I wish I had the money back I spent for other medicine." It is a simple, hardless preparation that removes the catarrhal mucus from the intestinal tract and aids the inflammation which causes practically all stomach, liver and intestinal allergies. "The dose will convince or money refunded. For sale by all druggists. (10.)"

Madame Franklin's work is a blessing to the race, in that it offers opportunities to the great masses of our women with a limited education, as well as those with a higher education, to engage in a pleasurable activity. It would be a splendid idea for every community to have a Franklin operator. The madame is now organizing her fall and winter classes, and has a special proposition to offer those desiring to take up the work, provided they are or call us at 805 Prine Ave, Houston, Texas, at once.
