Editor: Assuring you that I shall not enter into controversy, for there can be no disputing axioms, I have but two or three simple little questions to ask imperial Wizard Simmons of the Ku Klux Klan, and his melodramatic organization in projecting itself before the public, the public is not害怕 the hear questions: By what authority does any clan, Ku Klux or otherwise, arrogate political duties to itself? Is it loyalty to the government to deliberately flout the authority of the government by creating regulative or punitive force independent of the government. The con- Nobody can have any objection whatever-to the Ku Klux Klan while it contents itself with comparatively harmless nightgown riding—atfough, this sort of prank on the part of adults might argue an epidemic of imbecility. It is when the Klan intimidates, when the Klan claims to be an "invisible empire," organized to effect its end, that ordinary visible American city zens, owing only one civic allegiance, must regard the Klan as a mischievous nuisance. For the rest Colonel Simmons must be politely informed that Catholics—the few that have heard of his Klan outside the column of newspapers—know that its numbers are few, unimportant, and irresponsible; worthy of notice only as a sociological study, and principally because the Klan impresses observers as being nothing more than a picturesque clique of middle-aged asses with a saper-time penchant for rowdyism. As for the colonel's brave promise that members of the Klan would die for a persecuted Catholic church, the Catholice have full confidence in the armed force of the American government protecting their rights in America. We have before us the writing of this article the "Search Light" the official newspaper of the K. K. K. This paper seethes with nothing but contempt, intimidation and humiliation for the colored people of the nation. We have not been able to find a paragraph that was kindly disposed or a word of sympathy for the efforts of a race trying to progress and keep America as the vanguard of civilization. From what we could glean from its editorials the Negro must be kept in his place. The 20th century Negro seems to be the bone of contention. They are willing to encourage the Negro who knows where his place is and how to stay in it. What that place is we have never been able to discover. We can't throw these girls out of our group, they are human beings and of our own blood. We can't afford to let them disintegrate our group by vitiating We've got to reclaim and reform them. (By the Associated Negro Press.) Washington.—The subject of minister to Liberia is being considered with a degree of interest that is unusual. Dr. J. L. Johnson of Columbus, Ohio, is the present Wilson appointee to the African post. Liberia is being hailed as a new field of opportunity, and there is a desire that the American representative shall be truly statesmanlike in proportions. Dr. Earnest Lyon of Baltimore, a minister to Liberia under a former administration, is said to be an active candidate for the position. It is stated on high authority, however, that while he is a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church, his appointment would not be received with enthusiasm by Bishop Matthew W. Clair, of the same church, who is, also, a statement broadcast, that there are certain records on file in Washington which, if unearthed, would not help Dr. Lyon's candidacy. Walter Maranville's *Priate contract* is said to call for $10,000 for next summer's work. No wonder the "Rabbit" soon got used to the shift. Urban Shocker, the Brown's spitball star, is keeping himself in good condition this winter as floorwalker for a department store in St. Louis. Jake Daubert was high man in a trap shot at Harbury, Pa., with 98 out of 100. They say the wind was high and it was a cold day, to boot. Official statistics show that Grover Alexander was the leading hitter of the National league last season. But he didn't need any statistics to prove it. Outfield Dick Lottus and Pitcher Frank Wolfram have been released by the Chicago Cubs under an optional agreement. Earl Sheedley, White Sox first base recruit, is lame. He snapped one of his legs at the ankle several years ago. But Earl is rangy and a swell hitter. Hack Miller, Oakland outfielder, who was mentioned last season as a possible addition to the Cub machines, made 286 hits in the 1920 Coast league campaign. Henry Buser, an infielder, and Fred Miller, a pitcher, have been released by the Western association by the St. Louis Nationals. Now that the Pittsburgh Pirates have disposed of two outfielders—Southworth and Nicholson—there is a promise that Bill Hinchman will be retained as utility and pinch hitter. Jack Dunn of Baltimore pulled a new one when he signed a pitcher named Harry Frank. Dunn promised him a bonus for the Orioles failed to cop the pennant and the pitcher promptly signed. The 1621 schedule of the Texas league calls for 154 games. The season will be opened on April 15 and will close-on September 18. MISDIRECTED ENERGY. Did you ever see a person who was kept busy from early morn till late at night trying to do a piece of work and then when exhausted from strenuous activities, the work was not only unfinished but the party was all excited and tired out? So many people spend practically their entire time looking after other people's business and permitting their own to go to the devil. If they would take the time to devote their strength and energy to their own affairs, how much better off they would be. You have probably seen children who devoted the major portion of their time doing what they ought not to do, while leaving undone the things they ought to do and which, often, their parents have instructed them to do. This is nothing more or less than misdirected energy and unless turned into the right channel and made usable constructively, such energy goes to waste and society is the loser as a consequence. We spend entirely too much time trying to run the other fellow's business and then having spent ourselves in trying to run his affairs, we fall down miserably and shamefully with our own. Misdirected energy can prove detrimental to an individual just like a flood wreaks havoc upon the section of the country in which it does its destructive work. If that same amount of flood water were properly and equally distributive would tend to the soil require fertile and productive and the material surroundings lie more subluxious. The danger does not necessarily lie in the amount of energy a person possesses, but in the manner in which he exercises it: whether for good or for evil, for weal or for woe. Really, some individuals remind one of a ripping and snorting horse, who cavorts and runs all over the lot before being hitched to a vehicle, and then when pressed into service to pull a load the old horse soon tires out; he used his energy in doing the unnecessary and spectacular and hence was unable to do the necessary and serviceable task. Some are various in which energy can be misdirected. Some people their tongues so much overtime in harangue, gossipy, mourns, lies and other filth, that when bedtime they are so fatigued from such conversational extravagance that they have not sufficient strength to say their prayers. Such persons generally have the Lord's prayer posted in some conspicuous place in their home and they simply point to it and silently and sighfully say: "Lord, them's my sentiments!" Some use up too much brain energy in fretting and worrying about real and imaginary things and then when their brains should be functioning quickly and actively they are on the "blink," missing on several cylinders and sometimes, missing on all inders. In baseball it is possible for a team or player to "warm up" too much and then when the game begins the evil effects of up too much ("energy) in practice is readily apparent and the brains are lost in the process and holds us back. Some folks are like the old steamboat that used all its steam in blowing its whistle and whose speed compared favorably with a snail as a consequence. The old Latin admonition, "Be firm and preserve yourself for brighter days," should be the motto of countless thousands in our day and generation; for they are spending their energy and strength in doing the inconsequential and trivial things and thereby incapacitating themselves for the larger and more beneficial diseases. Why, some people are so interested in their neighbor's affairs that they will crawl on their stomachs under said neighbor's house and remain there all night, wallowing in mud and dirt, in order to hear or see something that will serve as a gossip convention theme and discussion. Did you ever see the person who was always full of free advice, instructing people how to run their affairs in a somewhat "holier-thou-that" attitude, while these gratis advisers always make a terrible mess of running their own affairs? Some of our friends—otherurers, too) spend both their energy and visit "fellow members," handlers, "fellow doctors," "conjurers," etc., making themselves more susceptible to ignorance and superstition and thereby weakening their moral, spiritual and intellectual fiber. Let us learn to do the right thing at the right time and leave undone both the right and wrong things at the wrong time. Reunited By the Stage Frederick Stone had gone into the theater quite accidentally; he had been dined with a friend who was a friend of his, and homeward he had stopped and found himself gacing with passing interest at the poster representing Victoria Green in "The Housance," the book he and went in, in bitter mood, in order to swerve. He had devoted five years of his life to play writing, and every effort he made to be formally of a reply. So he had abandoned that field to reap a fair success as a story writer. Victoria Green came on and captivated the attention of the audience, when the plain, sham story gradually began to make its way into the hearts of the audience, when soaked with the story, he himself gripped, enthralled, by the writer's power, but it was not until the second act was half over that he could be fully absorbed, very white, very determined, and sick with the sudden upwelling of memory. For this was his play, and in it he had told the story of his own It was a common enough story—that of the separation of the lovers. It was a common enough story, for when his fiance, Julia Arnold, and he had had their quarrel. But both were proud and both were young; and so the lovers had to fight, and finally he had left her in anger, to find when he was ready to ask forgiveness that she had gone away. He had found no trust of her and so the lovers had to fight, and completely from the knowledge of all who had known her. He watched the development of the memory in her in some of the set forth word by word, line by line, an indelible picture that revived each single memory and seared him to the heart. In this ten lines and offered it to a manager the year before, hoping that in the final stage reconciliation Julia would read his own hopes and dreams; that he would love and come back to him. And the play, replayed everywhere, had yet been long enough to enable some of his love to be it. It and steel it and have it produced. There was no unstaking that. Skillfully as it had been changed and rewritten, though every word had been written. He was the kind of a gentleman's mind, yet the play had emerged the same. It was his plot! It was his play!
