Prominent Southerner For Dyer Bill Henry A. Boyd Heads Publishing House BOLTON SMITH, PROMINENT WHITE LEADER, ENDORSES DYER BILL; SAYS SOUTH IS NOT ATTACKED The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, New York, has no role in public a statement from Bolton Smith, of Memphis, Tennessee, president in 1919 of the local Rotary Club, and a trustee of the University of Tennessee, endorsing the Dyer antitruncation bill, which is to come to a vote in the senate during the next session of congress. The statement of Mr. Smith was said to be especially significant by James Weldon Johnson, secretary of the Advancement Association, in that Mr. Smith declared the bill contained no special attack upon the South. The people of the entire state or district, and one is assured of a more impartial jury—one not terrorized by that local sentiment which usually is so blaunt after any mob action. Pew officers have the courage to take action against the people. There is no special attack on the South in such a measure. It is required by the progress of the country, North as well as South. As common Negro labor has moved into the North, Negroes have been lynched by white men." "That some Southern men who sincerely oppose lynchings should not favor the Dyer bill is due to a mispreparation of its effect and purpose. There is no part of the United States in which those favoring the due process are not in favor of the punishment of lynchers by federal courts, whenever local officials fail to do their duty." "4. The lynching of Negroes by white mobs is bad enough, but there is no reason why lynchings should be faced with an even more dangerous character of lynching, namely." Reinforcing the many eloquent and stirring speeches, the conference adopted a number of vigorous pronouncements on prohibition, law enforcement, juvenile delinquency, education, vice, crime, health and social morality, and on the relation of the church, the home and the press to these several subjects. These reports were formulated by carefully chosen commissions and were referred to a committee on findings to be correlated into a single statement and given to the public. In view of this fact and in view of the peculiar situation that obtains politically in Texas in the race for United States senator, we cannot afford to shirk from our duty or slave slackers and cowards in the impending conflict and menacing crisis. It is beginning to appear that the day is about to arrive in this state for which "we long have sought and mourned because we found it not," and it is up to us as full-fledged, genuine, unadulterated, unhypenated and undefined American citizens to vote for the best interests of our common country, state and race. There are two candidates in the race for the United States senate—Earle B. Mayfield, reputed klan candidate, and George Peddy, avowed anti-klan candidate and fusion choice of the independent democrats and republicans of Texas who are opposed to "invisible empires" and their emissaries representing Texas in the highest branch of our national government at Washington. On Tuesday, November 7, 1922, the election will be held and every American citizen, otherwise qualified by having paid the poll tax or secured an exemption certificate, will be afforded an opportunity to go to the polls and cast a ballot for the senatorial candidates. A vote for George Peddy for United States senator from Texas is a protest against existing political conditions in the Lone Star State and will show to the outside world that Texas, despite her record of ignominy and shame, can be counted upon to stand by constitutional government and law and order when the supreme test comes. This election will be under federal supervision and operating under national jurisdiction, no citizen need have any fear of voting his honest and conscientious convictions on election day. Personally, we are not concerned about nor interested in the other candidates in the race and our main strength should be mustered and centered on the senatorial race, to the end that Candidate Peddy will poll sufficient votes to land him in Washington for the next six years. How sanely, sensibly and patriotically we act and acquit ourselves on this occasion will largely determine our future political status in Texas, and our action will either make friends or lose friends. As chairman of the Black-Tan Republican party of Harris County, I am taking this method of informing the members of our party regarding the present political situation, to the end that we can organize our forces in any manner desired and wag a relentless and effective campaign for the candidacy of George Peddy. Peddy's election is imperative, because of the peculiar issue involved. You fought a good fight in the memorable campaign of 1920, and while we were defeated, the cause was not lost and just what we complained about and strove for then is the battle of today, only the participants are of another party. The principle is largely the same—whether democracy shall reign or autocracy (klanocracy) shall become the ruling political passion of the state and nation? Where stand you, brave and noble patriots, in this battle against the haughty and arrogant giant of repression, oppression, lawlessness, ruthlessness, intolerance, mistrust, bigotry and prejudice? Are you willing to take up little David's sling shot (the ballot) and go forth to engage this mammoth monster and tyrant in the battle of Armageddon? Since our party has no candidate in the field, and since the democratic party at its San Antonio convention pledged itself to a "white man's party," and since the republican party has broken faith with the colored voters and is no longer worthy nor entitled to receive our unqualified and unstinted support, we should all go to the polls Tuesday, November 7, 1922, and vote for GEORGE PEDY for United States senator. If his name is not printed on the ballot, it can be easily inserted with a lead pencil. I would suggest that you take up writing lessons at once, so as to become quite proficient in writing in the name of GEORGE PEDY in the event legal technicalities and political machinations keep his name off the official ballot. Finally, fellow-constituents and compatriots, I see no manly course to pursue other than to support George Peddy for the United States senate and to this end I suggest that you bend your energies, exert your efforts and cast your ballots. Legal litigation and court proceedings, at this angle of the game, seem to warrant the assertion that neither the name of Earle B. Mayfield, klan nominee for United States senator from Texas, nor George Peddy, independent democratic and anti-klan candidate, will appear on the official ballot at the general election Tuesday, November 7. It is virtually a conceded fact that the name of George Peddy will not be printed on the official ballot. Yet this contingency has not dampened the ardor of the fusion candidate nor put a crimp upon the activities of his supporters. Candidate George Peddy is addressing large and enthusiastic audiences throughout Texas and his cause (which is the people's cause) goes merrily on. Legal opinions and court decisions can keep Candidate Peddy's name off the official ballot, but the election laws of Texas permit every voter the right and prerogative to write in his or her choice for any position on the official ballot, and thus the patriotic and liberty-loving citizens of the Lone Star State are asked to go to the polls on Tuesday, November 7, 1922, and WRITE IN the name of GEORGE PEDDY for United States senator on the independent ticket. Ordinarily, the official ballot for general elections has one blank column, in which voters can write in their choice for certain positions, provided they scratch the name of the candidate or candidates occupying the same position or running for the same office as the one or ones said citizens desire to vote for and support. By writing in the name of GEORGE PEDDY in the blank column and scratching both the democratic and republican tickets, the colored voters can extricate themselves from an embarrassing situation. Moreover, they can scratch every name on both the democratic and republican tickets and write in the name of George Peddy on either the democratic or republican ticket under the title of 'For United States Senator." The Informer is not supporting either the democratic or republican ticket, but this paper does favor the candidacy of George Peddy for United States senator as an independent candidate, and it is possible for colored citizens to vote for him (as suggested and outlined hereinbefore) without stultifying their manhood or womanhood by swallowing the brand of political moonshine distilled by the professed democrats and pseudo-republicans. Democratic form of government is on trial and recent disclosures should convince the otherwise lukewarm and unconcerned citizen that lethargy and indifference are twin evils inimicable to the best interests of a democratic republic. As between the democratic and republican parties, there is little for colored voters to choose, the former excluding us by practice and preachment, and the latter eliminating us by its policy of "illy-whiteism." But just like America can no longer hold herself aloof from world problems and programs, neither can the colored voter hope to isolate himself nor straddle the fence when such an issue arises as now confronts the entire electorate of Texas. The issue has resolved itself into visible government, law and order on one side and "invisible empire," anarchy and disorder on the other. Candidate GEORGE PEDDY stands for constitutional government and its time-tested institutions and ideals. Practice writing the name of GEORGE PEDDY (leave off all other initials) and go to the polls on Tuesday, November 7, and write the independent senatorial candidate right into the United States senate. Selah! THAT THIRD WARD RENDEZVOUS. Several of the colored residents of a certain section of the Third Ward are complaining loud and long and engaging in much conversation regarding the operation of a certain house in that section by a bunch of so-called ministers of the gospel. It seems that a certain bunch of elders have decided to forsake Milam Street and the Market Square for this bawdy house and bootleg joint, where they not only drink and often get as a souse the proverbial stewed owl, but that they even meet clandestinely the wives, daughters and sisters of their parishioners and even those who are not their parishioners nor related to them. These residents further assert that one can smell the odor of liquor even when passing the premises and that upon entering this celebrated rendezvous the very smell of booze is of sufficient strength to intoxicate the average man. It is not the intention of the Informer to continually upbraid and expose our supposed leaders who wear the clergy's garb and are supposed to walk the straight and narrow path; but such unbecoming acts and degrading deeds must be stopped and that at once. When the Informer discussed certain immoral and lewd practices among certain local preachers in a former editorial, quite a number of the brethren got hot in the collar and breathed out threats against the editor; yet the ones that the previous article hit are the main springs and ring leaders in this damnable and disgraceful den in the Third Ward, according to eye-witnesses. We know one local minister of color, who sent out circular letters to several leading white citizens upon the pretext that his congregation was going to remodel the church edifice, yet all the money remitted to this ministerial leader has been spent by him personally and most of the money was spent for liquor, on women and for automobile rides after the shades of evening had fallen and darkness had fallen. Many of these charges are true and if these rascales do not clean up and mend their ways, some shocking and revolting revelations are going to be made in the old burge. Colored congregations raise more money, proportionately, than white churches for the operation and maintenance of the church and the majority of 'ue local race pastors receive handsome salaries, and, in most instances, handle practically all of the church funds; yet these whiskey-heads and women chasers would rather die and go on to hell, where they are headed, than pay an honest obligation and justly incurred bill. They pay neither God nor man, but they can spend every red cent they can beg, borrow and steal for moonshine, "white lightning" and all brands and makes of liquor and would be booze and for having "good times" with the women folk. We have known of instances where a certain local colored pastor has repeatedly entered his punishment in an indictment condition and to prove the truth of the truism, "Like priest, like people" some of the officers of the church have been known to come to church all "lit up", and in their "tea." This is a crying shame unto high heaven and it is time for the laity to call a halt, and if these booze boys and whore-mongers will not resist in their infamous and nefarious practices, a few pulpits ought to be declared vacant and the dirty droomrels turned out in the street. On local church performed such a signal service to the community and society some months ago and if a few more would repeat the dose, ere long Houston could boast of an increasingly large number of clean and upright ministers, devout and consecrated servants of God and true and tried leaders of the people. By all means, let this Third Ward rendezvous and bawdy house ministers be called to the church. The Informer suggests that the residents and neighbors report same to police department and prohibition enforcement officers. RACE LEADERS EMPLOY TERM "NIGGER." One of the most disgusting features connected with the recent session of the General Baptist Convention, held in this city at Emancipation Park, was the promiscuous employment of the term "nigger" by the majority of the ministers. It was nothing strange nor unusual to hear some religious leader allude to the members of his race as "little niggers" and the very air was polluted and defiled by the constant use of this approbrious appellation. The charge has often been made that the bootlacks and others of the race serving in menial capacities around white people were largely responsible for the constant use of the word "nigger"; but some of our supposed leaders and big guns are more guilty of this breech than the so-called hoi poli and masses. The word "nigger" is objectionable to our race, whether employed by members of our race by members of other races; for what people call themselves generally determines what other people call them. Let a man continue to refer to and mention his wife as "Annie.' or "Mary," and soon every other person will call her that name without any handle attached. We cannot force other races to cease calling us "niggers," "coons" "darkies," etc., but we certainly can stop the habit ourselves and then be pleased to note that we do not use such terms any more; they will ultimately desist. Until we learn to respect ourselves and refrain from calling each other by terms that we disdain other races using, we can never hope for other races to respect us. But for the sake of the race, let our leaders stop referring to the members of our race as "niggers," and the man who persists in employing such terms is not worthy of the high place he occupies among our people. Sirs, let's cut it out! SOUTH'S GREATEST WEEKLY NEWSPAPER AUDITOR PIERSON GIVES ACCOUNT OF HIS STEWARDSHIP AND ISSUES FINANCIAL STATEMENT ON STATE WORK Having the Unique Distinction of Filling the Most Responsible Position in the World Accorded to a Baptist Layman. The subject of this sketch is not only jeopardy and treasures of the Antoch Baptist Church here as well as supervisor of its chair, secretary of the State B. Y. P. U. Convention and press president of the Forested Teacher's State Association, but he is master of another field hereotrofers almost unexplored by anyone to say nothing about his unqualified service as director of the science department of the Horton College High School, that new field endeavor is the Science of Accounts, popularly known as auditing. While he is a member of the National Baptist Convention, U. S. A., the National B. Y. P. U. and Sunday School Congress, U. S. A., he is also auditor of the Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention of Texas. It is his report of the B. M. and E. Convention of Texas affairs, made before that body at its annual sitting in Texarkana last week, with which this article has to do. We are told by eyewitnesses that never before in the history of Texas Baptists there has been such a great collection of facts, assemblies in such a systematic and concrete form and delivered in such a simple and convincing way as was done in this case. The above change was the result of Dr. L. K. Williams. of Chicago, former president of the convention; Dr. J. E. Knox, president State S. C. Convention; Rev. E. M. Griggs, president Chizens Bank; Rev. P. W. Weekey, number of employees; U. S. K. Keeghs and many others which lack of space present mentioning. SENATOR GEORGE PEDDY FOR U. S. SENATOR The Informer has been interrogated by quite a number of our citizens regarding the wisdom of the colored voters taking sides in the senatorial race between George E. B. Peldy and Earle Mayfield. Some contend that, since it is a fight between two factions of democrats, colored voters should be neutral it present and await developments. The Informer, while supporting the independent senatorial candidate, cannot subscribe to the idea that we should pursue a pussy-footing, watchful waiting policy in a campain of such momentus and far-reaching magnitude. If there is one thing wrong with this country today, it is the proneness and policy of dodging issues and waiting to see which way the political wind is going to blow, with the result that we are developing a bunch of politicians instead of statesmen at an alarming rate. Real Americans admire and have the unrest respect for men who come out clearly and uncompromisingly in issues, who do not beat around the bush or straddle the fence. Two of our lamented presidents, the immortal Abraham Lincoln and illustrious Theodore Roosevelt, were outstanding characters of manliness, backbone, stamina, political fortitude and moral courage. They believed in American ideals and institutions and opposed with all the strength at their command all acts and movements calculated to play havoc with their native land. Candidate Peddy has come out openly and unreservedly for constitutional government as against "invisible empire," and this platform is broad enough for all American citizens to stand on until Shiloh comes. His opponent says nothing on THE burning issue of the day and his very silence condemns him before the bar of public opinion and places him in a very embarrassing and compromising position. It is impossible to run with the hounds and the hare, neither can a person go in two opposite directions at the same time. A centipede is supposed to possess one hundred legs, yet this feat is impossible of accomplishment by this reptile. George Peddy is a typical American and comes from that section of Texas that has produced some of the foremost characters in the history of the state. He does not believe in temporizing with wrong nor trying to palliate unwholesome conditions by merely closing one's eyes and refusing to see things as they really are. Whatever may be his shortcomings, he certainly appeals to The Informer in his ringing denunciation and bitter arraignment of those who have arrogated unto themselves certain super-legal authority and would overthrow constituted authorities by both preaching and practicing the doctrine that "might makes right." Peddy stands for the constitution against confusion; for law and order against anarchy and disorder; for the enforcement and administration of the law through orderly processes of legal tribunals rather than by the lash, tar, feathers and emasculations; for principles rather than parties; for issues over and above individuals; for the ballot rather than bullets; for the freedom of American citizens to worship God according to their own dictates and not at the behest of religious zealots and fanatical bigots; for the free and untrammeled exercise of the ballot by American citizens without blindly voting the passions and prejudices of a coterie of self-styled purveyors of morals who have commercialized patriotism, seduced Americanism and raped democracy. That he consented to lead this protest movement against existing evils in the erstwhile and professed democratic party in Texas adds to his credit and stamps him as a man with convictions and the courage of said convictions, who would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of constitutional government than occupy a high place in the ranks of the exponents and devotees of the "invisible empire." Captain George Peddy, world war veteran, is The Informer's choice for United States senator from Texas and the cause he represents and the evils he challenges should commend him to every colored voter in Texas. THE ISSUES OF THIS CAMPAIGN (By GEORGE PEDDY.) The issue in this campaign is constitutional government against invisible government. Before the democratic primaries were held a Ku Klux Klan primary was held. Earle B. Mayfield came out of that primary the nominee of the Ku Klux Klan. The Ku Klux Klan then entered the democratic primary, not like the other democrats, as a solid block vote. This process is known as "boring from within." It is sometimes referred to in the rural districts as: "if you can't beat them join them." Words of the Ku Klux Klan came into the democratic party in a block and took hold of it and took charge of it and trotted out their man, disguised as a democrat. Now, there are a lot of us old-fashioned democrats who don't like that sort of thing and we don't like the Ku Klux Klan. We have a man in trial by jury; we believe a man has right to confront his accusers and that he should have an opportunity to present his witnesses. We see no good to come out of capitalizing prejudices, stirring religious intolerance or trying to assert, at this late date, that a man who is foreign-born is a citizen. The REAL democrat have to be known as the "independent democrat." When we took our position and spoke principles of Americanism, the republicans of Texas joined us and I have their nomination alone. On such propositions as these—which constitute the very bedrock of our form of government—no party is evident. Evidently, this great movement frightened the opposition and by the use of a technicality my name was barred from the ballot. It may or may not be a good technicality, but it wasn't just. It wasn't equitable. That matter is now before the federal court. Some other citizen citizens decided that since the Mayfield crowd wanted to be so excited about the letter of the law, they believed they could prove that Mayfield committed illegal acts in his campaign expenses and they filed suit and gathered testimony. This late date, Mr. Mayfield magnanimously sent him in a request to the attorney general to reverse himself. Mayfield had previously said he had nothing to do with the attorney general's original decision in keeping my name off the ballet. He thought he might that any request from him would cause the attorney general to put my name back on the ballot. Would it be any more legal to put it back because Mr. Mayfield agreed to it?
