The recent resignation of Mr. James B. Grigsby from the presidency of the board of directors and trustees of Union Hospital, has been the subject of much discussion on the streets, and, while he attributed his resignation to stress of business, many are of the opinion that there are other reasons which he did not care to express. It was and is very unfortunate for the hospital movement to lose the executive services of such an able and successful business man as Mr. Grigsby, who has been done has been done. His successor, Prof. W. L. Davis, while he does not suffer by comparison, is likely to find it a little more difficult now to harness and marshal the forces under existing conditions. Let us state right here that the Informer is not endeavoring to knock nor discourage the hospital movement, but we might as well face the issue now and get over with the spasm and solidify our forces for the successful culmination of this needed and worthy institution. The colored people of this city, like all cities where any number of our people reside, certainly need a hospital, and it is a reflection of our being haunted numerically strong in financial accumulation and intellectual attainments and qualifications that heretofore we have not possessed such an institution in Houston—one that is a real credit to our group and city, where our people can secure the best in medical service and surgery. But for a hospital movement to succeed in Houston or any other town, the doctors, themselves, must lead out in the movement—not with a rule or ruin" policy, but motivated by an earnest and desired desire to achieve financial accumulation, wants and needs of suffering humanity in a more efficient, thorough, painstaking, proficient and scientific method. Expressed in the language of the streets, the doctors must get together, discard all little petty jealousies, quit knocking and panning each other, inject a little more ethics in their profession and join forces for one common end—to serve their fellowman, in a way that is known to man, in the most intelligent and efficient manner. Take the local situation: In this city, with less than twenty colored physicians, they are divided, almost hopelessly and beyond redemption, into at least three factions or maybe clans is a better word. It can be said to the credit of a few of the local physicians of color that they take no particular interest nor part in factional fights and differences; yet entirely too many of them do and their families are involved, and the human family are sufferers as a consequence of this chen design, unengaging, unethical and really disgraceful policy. The average layman knows nothing about the needs and advantages of a hospital and is totally unfit and unprepared to even give the matter much worth-while consideration. The hospital movement is just not in his line. Suppose a movement was launched for the advancement and promotion of the teaching profession or any other vocation, do your research on the profession or any other course you would suit supinely by and trust other people to push and put over propositions that meant much in training, experience and financial remuneration to them and their cause? Yet that is just what the vast majority of the colored doctors of Houston are doing; their motto seems to be, "Let George and Bill do it!" While on this of the doctors and their relation and responsibility to the public, permit us to make this digressive observation. JAMES BOND Secretary Kentucky Interracial Commission. Like most movements of its kind, the Interracial Movement had its birth in a great crisis. During the war the white and colored people of the South, in a very remarkable way, forgotten their differences and united in a supreme effort to win the war. Promises of better things were made to all of our boys, black and white. The Negro soldier accepted these promises at face value. He played well his part in the war. When upon his return to his home-land these promises were not realized, his heart was filled with bitterness. The lines were more tightly drawn and barriers to his progress seemed more stubborn and relentless than ever. THE HOUSTON INFORMER, SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 1923 ticipating in no movement for the public real and welfare, unless said participation means dollars and cents to them. The public real and welfare must be the highest priority, local church or attend any civic or commercial meeting and you will note that our doctors are conspicuous by their absence, and yet they are always harping on the race employing colored physicians. The race should use colored doctors (and we have some splendid ones in Houston), but these doctors must not be like the Dead Sea Scrolls and take on the role of medical dcharter. There is a hospital movement under way in Washington, D.C. and the colored doctors of that city led in a financial drive with donations and pledges, several pledging as high as $1000 and none less than $250. Those doctors know that the success of a colored hospital in this city will take much to them in medical and surgical experience and perhaps more in money and power. Instead of investing all their surplus money in rent houses and real estate and living in a little shell of exclusiveness and self-compliance, they are wise enough to visualize the future and even make sacrifices to establish and make possible an institution that will cater visualize and expression and racial contingent in latter years and even right now. The South Secreta Like most move its birth in a great people of the South, differences and usages of better things. The Negro solidly played well his home-land there with bitterness to his progress since Adr race resists breed. As race riots broke out and fear of a general race conflict gripped the country, a group of white men, confident that the good will and cooperation secured between the races during the war could be perpetuated, called into conference a number of representative colored men in the spirit of prayer and supplication, and adopted a platform upon which all could stand. The planks of this platform included justice before the law, the prevention of lynching, and the correction of other injustices to the Negro. Some of the most widely known people of the South accepted places on the commission, among whom were ministers, college presidents, bishops and capitalists. As a later development, many of the South's leading women have become associated with the movement. In Houston about nine colored doctors presented the new Union Hospital with equipment worth about $1500, perhaps, which was transferred from the old hospital, and some of them seem to think that they have done more than their duty already. This was a commendable act, and, while these particular physician duties that they have done the one deed will not suffice for the success of the hospital undertaking. It requires real, honest-to-goodness money to put over any kind of a meritorious action and a hospital movement is no exception to the general rule. If the Union Hospital is to become a real institution and function as such plants do among other races and even among our race in other localities, the Houston colored doctors will be forced to work in the hospital and public and the hospital movement and unite their forces and even contribute of their means to make this movement go over big. The commission does not pretend to have discovered a short cut to the problem, but it has an existence a perfect organization, nor an existence a perfect solution to the race problem that can be worked out in a day. It recognizes the need for a new Martin, that provides students an opportunity not to a task for limited sympathies and petty interests; that it is not a task for the more organized and more organized; that it is a spiritual task, a task to be carried out in the face of the realities of the Man of Gallile. These principles emphasize first the truth that the race problem is a problem of the Man of Gallile. This editorial is not intended as a tribute upon the colored physicians per se, but we merely wish to call attention to certain impediments and hindrances to the hospital movement, which must be overcome in order to be successful and have any degree of permanency and stability to it. The colored people need a hospital in Houston badly and on this point all agree, but under the existing conditions its realization will be difficult of attainment. The colored people need a knock, tell "how it ought to be done," or "can't be done" and then refuse or fail to contribute one thought or penny where it can accomplish something tangible and concrete, may show the smartness of the knocker and know-all, but it nets the hospital movement and the race no appreciable results. The colored people are not the ones that than they are according either and the sooner they pay this debt, the better it will be for all concerned. If the physicians show little faith in or manifest hardly passing interest in the movement and fail to lead out in putting over the colored people, the public will expect the public to become interested and concerned in the project. That the colored brother is no longer hog-tied to the republican party was very convincingly and thoroughly demonstrated in the 1970s. Bommer, 156 Tama Mrs. Martinez for Monday, Waco and Mrs. The black vote has, for the last eight or ten years, been the balance of power in the political campaigns waged in the Windy City, ex-Mayor Thompson winning repeatedly with the heavy colored vote in that city. Candidate Dever is a Catholic, and, while supported by the democratic party, his record and attitude towards the colored citizen won him a place in the hearts of the black voters and the unexpected occurred. Mrs. M. A. Moore, Gildings, paid her daughters, M. G. R. M. Newman and Miss A. L. Moore, 2715 Center Street a visit last week. The Second and Third Wards, always republican strongholds, with large colored population, gave Dever a handsome majority over Lueder, and thus Chicago has its first democratic mayor in nearly a decade. Mr. J. J. ("Jeff") McIlroy, 1112 Crook Street, had his leg broken in two places while at work at the Turning Bain Inn last Saturday. Perhaps these distinguished solons, who were made extinguished, speaking politically, by these colored voters who were dissatisfied with the program and policy of the "grand old party" and who were not convinced that the conditions have many time that the president, had spoken a distinct subject." Miss Florence Curtley Holiday returned hiss this week, reporting in school term in Chambers County. Mr. Nav Sayov, manager of the shilling parlor at 411 Mt. Street, who has been quite ill with pneumonia, is going to see her. But past blessings will not suffice and the colored brother is concerned more in what those in office and power TODAY are doing and going to do for their group than in office and power YESTERDAY did for them or their hears. Dr. C. A. George, local dentist, attended the funeral of Dr. N. T. Walla, Fl. Worth dentist, who passed away I am last city week. This sweeping democratic victory in Chicago should serve notice to the republicans of the nation that "times that used to be are now not." Mrs. Geo. W. Whether the colored Chicagoans acted wisely in accepting Dever and rejecting Lueder, time alone will prove; but it certainly demonstrated one patent and pertinent fact, viz: intelligent and upstanding colored citizens of the country are more concerned in the past than in party name, shibboleth, stereotyped campaign slogans, and sternly bournish bum and bumble connected with political campaigns. PAGE Teacher of Biblical Studies, Moody School of theology TEXT-God forbid that I should glory ave in the crown of our Lord Jesus Christ-Galatians 4:16 The battle for the Christian faith in some form or other, has to be fought has to be fought in each moun- tion. The cross of Christ is the object of attack and the Constant effort is put forth to reduce it to a mere business, but going over the top and all that sort of thing, whether coarse or out in each succession. The cross of Christ is the object of obeying by the enemy. Constant effort is the purpose, but it does it to a more example of heroism, a going over the obstacle, to accomplish that sort of thing. Human nature, with beholdenness, has no objection to this, for it gives occasion for self praise and acknowledgment that being destroyed all its. Its message is not of something to be done, but of something on which the soul of man may rest, because it meets both his guilt and desire. There are three outstanding reasons why the believer engages in the cross of Christ. First, as meets the penalty involved in the sin, the in-transgression of the law. The penalty involved in the benefit of law can never be restricted. That would be an unrighteous act. The glory of the cross is due in part to the fact that the penalty involved in transgressions was met and paid in the death of Christ. "God set forth Christ to be a propitiation"—that offering for an which righteousness requires. In scripture this offering is referred to as the one act of righteousness, because it met every righteousness requirement involved. Until this is believed there can never be peace with God. After this is believed there can never be anything else but peace with God. He made peace through the blood of His cross, a righteous peace. Believe it and answer it. Say with the apostle: "Belgo now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him." The first was the progression worketh with wrath," but, standing on the cross and looking in faith at the one who died for our sins, we can repeat the words of I Thessalonians 1:10—"Jesus, who delivered us from the wrath to come." When the requirements of law are satisfied then and only then can conscience be satisfied. Inasmuch as every claim of the righteous law has been met, conscience is at rest and the heart is at peace. In the second place, the cross is jo be glorified in as the basta for the building of a true Christian character. The first place of the man is the first place of the man of the gospel, the good news of God concerning His Son, he is not only justified by faith, but by the Word of Christ, who is a man and vitalizing unison, that he can say, with the writer of our text, "I have been crucified with Christ; never etheliens I live, yet not I but Christ, and I am the man of the great man, and all our goodness. There is no true Christian character apart from it. By nature we belong to a fallen race; we have called for the "Our Lord's God" which he is decried but that "the heart proceed evil things," and the great apostle testified: "In me dwell with no good thing. The problem of the power of the man is the power of this life, and the power of this man is solved at Calvary. Not only did Christ take our stins to the cross, but He took us in there too. Our man was crucified with God. Our unis in His death. The purpose of this is to destroy the power of sin in us, though the power of sin is not to be lost, but not to regain; it may operate, but not control. The command to Christians la, "Let not sin reign in your mortal bodies. The cross makes all down through the age there has been from it a stream of spirituality, and the power of the man is the power of the man, and the power of the man is still the death under the cross strives that old Adam life and destroys its dismalion. On the other side—the reunion—reaction side—it provides new life and the power to the end of the true Christian character. In other words, goodness is the result of union with Christ in death and resurrection. The Word of God is the Word of the church and in the world is that of trying to make this old fallen nature of ours fit for the presence of God. For better to adopt God's way and, in the same way as the first to help us to solve "Vood indeed unto sin, and alive unto God in Christ Jesus." Furthermore, we glory in the cross on the place where Satan was overjoyed everywhere among Christian people. We cried with the same spirit when he blotted out the handwriting of ordination to His cross, but he also apolied the principality and powers of darkness, and the victory was complete: the Prince of Darkness was utterly defeated, and he was brightly and without obstruction from the cross of Calvary.
