SCHOOL TRUSTEE ELECTION.
"Can the colored people vote for trustees for the Houston Independent School district on June 9, 1923?" This query has been propounded to us so often that we deem it wise to collect this information before election. The election for selecting three members of the board of education, which will be held Saturday, June 9, 1923, is in a free-for-all affair and every member of the board (who has either paid his or her poll tax or excused certification certificate before expiration of constitutional time limit) is eligible to vote in this election.
In other words, the colored voters can call a ballot in every election held in Houston, excluding the democratic minority. Similarly, the colored voters should become more interested in these special elections, for they very visually and directly affect our group, and our apparent interest in them must prove our undying or act as a boosterism.
Some good men and women aspiring for positions on the school board and it is up to us to men and women on election day.
It is quite relevant and important that we serve the civic community of Houston in view of the position the public must be exercised to the end that the local, district, or national schools shall be elected to serve in this capacity.
Colored citizens can vote and should vote in this special election; for its results will determine, in a large measure, the future of the Houston
THE JITNEY SITUATION.
This is the last call for that hiccock diamond classic, between the colored business and professional men of the Houston Colored Commercial Club. This game, as stated previously, will be staged at Wearmouth Bay at 8:00 p.m. while it is not expected that one will witness a big loafer game, yet a businessman will be proclaimed all who attend this game. Colored Voters Worry Republican Politicians
(By the Associated Negro Press.)
Washington, D. C. There is something myriad future political attitude of colored America. Polit are silent. There seems nothing to do at present to think. All of the old time political dope having upset during the last two years, everyone is q prophesy. "We don't know where we are going our way." It is all due to the fact that the children of Aumviding their votes in places where the division mean victory for others not accustomed, heretofore, to r of the sundown ballots.
Do you know that the democrats of the big North already begin a definite organized program look the colored votes up to the importance, or necesshing a "conservative for president?" This is true Chicago and other centers. A heretofore republical reputation said recently: "I have come to I am willing to go out and work for a democrat they nominate the right man." All of the old time political dope having been miserably upset during the last two years, everyone is quite afraid to prophesy. "We don't know where we are going but we are on our way." It is all due to the fact that the children of Aunt Hagar are dividing their votes in places where the division means addition, and victory for others not accustomed, heretofore, to reap the benefit of the sundown ballots.
Do you know that the democrats of the big Northern states have already begun a definite organized program looking to educate the colored voters up to the importance, or necessity, of supporting a "conservative for president?" This is true in New York, Chicago and other centers. a heretofore republican leader of national reputation said recently: "I have come to the place where I am willing to go out and work for a democrat for president if they nominate the right man." This man has the power to influence thousands of votes.
If there are those who are bold "sitting on the lid." They are telling enough to come forth advocating the policy of "Stick to the republican party," this wing of colored America also "wins" the president to become a prominent leader. Harding, in his famous Birmingham address, in which the executive adviser vided colored America to divide their votes. Notwithstanding this disappointment, the club staff a well-acquainted and logical talks by Rev. E. O. Woolok, C. N. Love and T. "Tom" J. WINNING LAURELS
(By the Associated Negro Press.)
Ann Arbor, Mich.-Colored athletes of late seem to be leaning toward the bread jump. Debart Hibbard of the college team shattered to shatter the big ten record and come close to breaking the world's mark in the running bread jump at the annual track and field game of basketball. June 1 and 2, the third colored athlete of recent years to break into the athletic spotlight in this feature. So Butler of Dabuque College, Jamaica, won the most consistent broad jumpers of a few years ago and seldom failed to clear 22 feet on every effort. Butler, however, was a sprinter and low hurdler to go in three events instead of one.
Salw was followed by E. O. Gourlain of Solw, the present holder of the world's record in the running broad jump at 15 feet 8 inches. The Olympian was a fair high harder and sprier until Trainer Poch Donovan, the old time professional foot racer, saw the possibilities of a record break at 15 feet 8 inches. Now the eyes of the athletic world are focused on Habbard, who should smash the record if favorable conditions exist on June 2, Philadelphia. This spring rapt applied his chances at the big games as indolentians are ign and Illinois for the honors.

furnished music, and, in keeping with their reputation, brought down the home. Several new members were enrolled, of the local pastors being in the number, while Mr. Ferguson refused an honorary membership and paid does for one year, stating that "I want to pay my way." The crowd of men ever gathered under one roof in Houston in such a meeting in the history of our race in the city, which shows that the Colored Commercial Club must be functioning and filling a long time vacancy. The avaravans and their aroma punctuate the air and all spirit a delightful evening. Next Monday night, June 4, H. H. Haines, vice president and general manager of the Houston Chamber of Commerce, will be the home of the American Mutual. H. Haines is a veritable wire and those who fail to hear him on this occasion will miss a rare treat. The program will begin at 8 p.m. and the friends and friends be present and on time.
Colored Woman Victim Of Louisiana's Slavery
A report made public by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, 70 Fifth Avenue, New York City, gives details of the recent Louisiana peonage case exposed through the investigation undertaken by the New Orleans Branch of the N. A. A. C. P.
The victims of the peonage were Mrs. Emma Johnson and her two nine-year-old daughters, of Piayune, Miss., who were enticed to Tangipahua Parish in Louisiana, with the promise of transportation and board and pay of 1 cent for every box of strawberries picked. A labor agent and a colored woman enticed them.
When they had arrived at Tickfaw, La., they were carried to the strawberry farm of Benjamin Kineon, nine miles from the station, and held in a state of slavery, with no sleeping accommodations and poor food, chiefly of corn bread and syrup, and were forced to work from sunrise until sundown. Hezie Pringle, the woman's brother, found his way to the farm and offered to whatever debt his sister and her children owned Kineon he would release them. Mr. Kineon beat Pringle with a club and would have shot him if his wife had not begged him to spare Pringle. The wife hid the revolver, enabling Pringle to escape to New Orleans where he reported the case to

The association presented the facts to United States Attorney Burns, who ordered Federal agents to bring the berry pickers on the Kincheon farm to New Orleans for questioning and to arrest the colored woman who had enticed them. These orders were carried out and Mr. Emma Johnson, her two nine-year-old daughters, and several other people were brought before the Federal courts in New Orleans. This case was handled by Dr. G. W. Jeremiah's Service to His Nation.
Jeremiah was one of the last prophets of Judah. He saw the nation go into the Babylonian Captivity and Jeremiah went into Egypt. He was a lonely, misunderstood and unpopular prophet and then thrown into a horrible battle with his life. His own countrymen tried against him. He was placed in stocks and then thrown into a horrible battle with his life. The teacher should give a little sketch of his life. The following is taken from his Call (12:9-19).
His Call (12:9-19).
His Sympathetic Heart (4:19).
His Great Sorrows (10:15-21).
His Divine Power (10:21).
His Command and Sustained Him (10:7-9).
Because he was called upon to serve at the command of God urged him to surrender to the Babylonians, he was regarded as a traitor guilty of treason.
God declared that He would bring judgment upon them according to what He had said. Judgment is said against him, who disbelieves and阻拒 against God.
V. R. Weward of the Rechabites for Their Loyalty (rv. 18, 19).
Because they had been true to the command of Joadebah, they should have been a good God. God has such a regard for filial obedience that He lets no act go unpardonable. So the Bury of Hippophae. HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, JUNE 2, 1923.
ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS.
No organization nor institution can ever hope to succeed or make the proper impression upon the general public, whose members willfully refuse to carry out its tenets, principles, doctrines and dogmas.
If the members are sincere about selling their organization to the other man and making and maintaining his club or concern a real potent factor in the community, he must practice what he preaches.
A leading Houstonian of color, who has been solicited several times to join the Houston Colored Commercial Club, gave as one of the main reasons for not joining the fact that one of the biggest men in this local organization can often be seen coming from stores operated by other races with large supplies of groceries, despite the fact that several members of the club operate stores and the second oldest grocery store in Houston is operated by a C. C. C. member on Milam Street.
Without trying to dabble or meddle into any man's private affair, this ought not to obtain; and every professional and business man of the race arresting his money from his own people, should take one of his way to spend that money with another member of his own race.
No race has ever amounted to a row of pins that was not cleanliness at least to this extent; for as long as we trade with other people to the exclusion of our own, we are only giving them strength to ultimately crush and exploit it.
You can not fool the people these days; and the colored man who advocates patronizing race enterprises and then practices an altogether different policy, not only harm himself, but injures any organization with which he is connected that endeavors to promote and foster the commercial and business life of the race.
Really, friends, it is certainly time that we were becoming serious in this race building program and stop being penny wise and foolish.
Even granted that some articles are priced a little higher at some race concerns at at stores operated by other people, what can we ever hope to gain from the stores of other races?
How many of these stores will supplant boys and girls of their race with boys and girls of our race?

THE HOUSTON INFORMER, SATURDAY, JUNE 2, 1922
How many of our children will ever marry into the wealth we are building up for other races?
How many of our children will occupy clerical and administrative positions in these places of business owned and operated by other races?
Our children must intermarry and whenever and wherever we make a colored man wealthy and affluent, we have a chance of getting some of that money back into the family through these hymenal relations and connections.
Remember, when we patronize and trade with members of our own race we are not "helping them out" nearly as much as we are "helping ourselves" for in proportion as we strengthen and solidify our business and professional men, we are merely making it possible for the race to later enjoy the fruits of their labor.
We are too darn afraid that we are going to make some colored man rich; yet we delight in telling how our patronage has helped to make Mr. George rich; how he was a person when we started trading with him and what he owns now, etc.
We take undue and unusual pride in showing his beautiful home to visitors and delight in seeing him and his family breezes by us in some high-priced automobile, throwing dust in our faces and virtually exclaiming: "Get out of the way, nigger, and let me pass!"
But just let us spend 15 cents with some race man and then let him come into possession of a home a little better than the ordinary and later purchase him a medium-priced car, and then we will have conitions and issue an ultimatum that we are not going to trade with that fellow any more; we are not going to make him rich to live in his "fine" house and ride by us in his "swell car," and such tommyr and poppycock.
We are perfectly willing to make the other man rich and powerful, but when it comes to members of our own race and household, it is a horse of another color.
When it comes to consistency and common sense, so many of our people lead the league upside down.
The Informer has the names of several professional men, who are earning all their money from members of the colored race, yet spending practically all of it with men of other races for so many commodities that colored men can furnish them, and often at the same price, with better service.
If we can not sell the idea of racial co-operation and group action to ourselves, how in the name of high heaven do we ever hope or expect to sell it to the general public?
Come on, brothers, and let us practice what we preach along this line, for our actions speak louder than our words. Selah!

Please allow me space in your most worthy paper to thank my many guests. I will be turning out Sunday, May 27, to an honorable occasion.
We the number Two Second Piece and the number Three Church, have been for several years attending, praying thinking, and collecting money to assemblies on the day mentioned.
If we let our minds run back a few times, we might think of things with hopes for briefer days to come, things looked dark; but to day you find us in our new church building for the up-building of God's kingdom through God and our noble people. We feel that our pastor has done his work and that our pastor has some Sometimes mounted hills he out of success and our pastor punched us. And we, as his followers, are amply fit to follow behind such a noble Strive to we strived to our uttermost to reach the goal we are today. We are the co-operation of the public. We are the co-operation of the public. We are the gratitude to us in our efforts to climb the hill. We can say that there are many ways to come to our church and the gates of hell shall be opened.
Thanking you for allowing us space in your most noble and worthy paper for you. **REV. W. E. SMITH, Pastor,** **W. B. SOUNDS GREATEST WEEKLY NEWSPAPER
MOVIE TALKS No. 2
By Q. P. DeWALT.
We have a notion asking our heavy hitting divorce judge, who has just broken our own long distance relationship by dishing out 200 divorces the other day while the clock was marking off this same period of time. We believe that we have to be careful when we say that nearly all of our customers are husbands and wife who have ceased to be sweetheart. Hobby thinks that the beginning of a marriage is when you say the little nice things he used to say, and doing the little nice things he used to do. Naturally, staging sets in and somebody gets to set up the scene. Hobby's spirit, and a broken spirit is "the devil's workshop." Keep wife's spirit burned up by the divorce, and three or three times a week. She'll have something worth while to think about and talk about the root of the week, to say nothing about having a whole family to look forward to and speculate on.

A Healer of Great Power
Every man and woman ought to consult this wonderful lady. She can tell you many things that will put you to wondering. Madam Jefferson can bring tangled brains to the light of hopeful sensibility. Her medicine can reach any disease that you were not born with, and, in fact, she can locate any disease in the human body, and tell your complaints by your writing when others have failed. Write her and she will give you details of your disease. Madam Jefferson possesses a natural gift from birth, and is one of the greatest licensed preachers of the age. She has a supernatural gift. God has given her great power to heal and lead her people. Her indigestion medicine is excellent. She has discovered a wonderful hair vigor that prevents dandruff, stops falling hair, and gives new life and growth. Her pressing oil is wonderful. Her face black removes black heads, sunburn and gives a beautiful complexion. Her pills salve reaches the worst cases. Her illment is good for stiff joints, toothache and all pain. Agents wanted. Send 10 cents stamps with all letters. Orders promptly filled.
