Smith, who recently opened a suite of offices at 419% Millam Street, won his first criminal case a few days ago. It being a case that was not a case for the lawyer, the lawyer has conducted since locating in our city. The case was against Joe Lewis, who was charged with four counts; two for burglary and two for felony theft, and his supposed accomplice was a谋杀. He had the blind残障. For receiving the stolen goods that Lewis was charged with pifterin, an Italian merchant had already been tried and convicted and even the prosecuting attorney's office had advised Lewis to be guilty. He could be dismissed, adding that this accused race man did not have a possible chance to miss a free trip to the penal institution at Huntsville. He was tried before Judge C. W. Robinson of the criminal district court on May 16 and Lawyer Smith was opposed by Assistant District Attorney Johnson. The jury was composed of 12 white men, yet when this case was decided, he was not the only one and concluded his argument, the jury quickly returned a verdict of "not guilty." It seems that the state's main witness was a previous prison word and Attorney Smith had him disqualified. This cooked the prosecution's goose. The original charge had the two men charged jointly with the offenses, but here the race lawyer scored another hit. He was not a man who went to the bat in the Lewis case. Lewis had all along maintained his innocence and all attempts to force a confession from him, like is done in many cases, especially where cold-hearted persons are involved, met with failure. The Informer mentions this case and colored attorney's victory in the face of overwhelming odds to show that ability will often win a victory where one is not the other; but this race however under-diminished, as one of --- THE HOUSTON INFORMER the most able and statute barristers in the country, having practiced before the bar of New York City for a number of years. He has won many notable victories and his first victory in a local case shows that he is still in fine fettle and well qualified to represent his client before the bar of this county and state. The Texas Workman's Compensation Law, amended by the 1925 state legislature, from compensation to the injury pay, is the only law of peod and not more than $30 per week, instead of not less than $5 per week and more than $15 per week, under the old law. The Grand Lodge of the Colossal Knights of Pythons Ind the Grand Court of Calanthe of North America, South America Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia have taken full and complete control of Dallas this week. CHAMBER COMMERCE HE A D ADDRESSES RACE ORGANIZATION The Houston Colored Commercial Club enjoyed a rare and rich treat Monday night, when H. M. H. Hainese vice president and general manager of the Houston Colored Commercial Club, that body at the American Mutual Bank, 74% Prairie Avenue. The failure of Mayor Oscar F. Barring a couple of bad innings, the second and seventh, when the carriers scored all of their runs, it was as good and exciting a game as the spectators could have witnessed from professional clubs. The C. C. C. Club scored the first run in the first game, the carriers scored six tallies in the second on one hit, several playing miseries being responsible for this galaxy of markers. The C. C. C. team scored two more runs in the third spasm and knotted their defensive works to fall to pieces in the seventh frame and donate five runs to the carriers' cause. Willis Washington pitched for the curling-baller, and assumed furling duties for C. C. C. Both hurled good ball, S McNell later relieving the former and Watson Lewis the latter. Some of this stars of the game were positive: Gardner, Courtney Waller, J. M. Burr, H. Middleton, for the carriers; Dr. G. A. Allen, Dr. L. M. Mitchell, Sam Stevenson, C. C. Stuart. The hitting of C. P. Richardson, who covered right field, was the day's sense of the game. The other was Clally at bat, but once; being the only C. C. The voters of Houston will be called upon to pass judgment on two propositions Saturday, June 9, while the citizens of the city and independent school district will be afforded an opportunity to elect three members of the board of directors. The voters of Houston will be asked the question of the retention or abolition of the jitneys is one issue, and the issuance of bonds to the amount of $1,750,000 for a nineteen-story municipal building is the other proposition. The Informer is not particularly committed to the candidacy of any aspirants for positions on the school board, yet this paper believes that Captain J. Lewis Thompson, R. H. Fonville and James G. Donovan are as good material for school board members as can be found in the city. The information provided by the Informer, experience with city school management, and handling of big problems, youth, a vision of and grasp on educational problems and questions that will be of unfortune. We believe that these three candidates measure up to the requirements along this line and therefore favor their candidacy for the three elective municipal positions. The jitneys question, while the decision of the voters will not be binding, should be settled once for all, and since there is no colored lines nor line carrying colored passengers, the Informer is not particularly concerned in the proposition from that angle. This paper, in view of the information presented, favors the abolition of the jitneys for the grevious attitude of the white jitney operators towards the San Felipe line, when said attitude of the official dictum, these white operators forfeited all claims that they may have had one or more. It is a question of the white jitney operators on one hand and the street car company on the other; and since the traction company is a real asset for the city, it is worth more to the city than fifty jitney lines as now operated. Why should colored voters favor the retention of the jitneys, when we can not afford it?
