Even Southern newspapers of known standing claim a mistake has been made. Says the Mobile (Ala.) Coming at the moment when a conference is about to be held in the hope of bringing about an agreement between the government and the people of Tuskegee, the display of the fiery cross must be pronounced inupporture, and, though designed to support the protest of the people of Tuskegee, may have the opposite effect." This was never taken away. At the lay convention held at Conroe some weeks ago Mr. Smith was presented with a delegate. At the conclave conference of the A. M. E. HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, JULY 21, 1923 HOUSTON COLORED POSTAL EMPLOYES HEARD MASTERLY DISCOURSE AT ANTIOCH SUNDAY The above photograph of the Houston colored postal employee was anapped by Photographer Harris on the steps of the Colored Carnegie Library last Sunday before the sermon and service at Antioch Baptist Church. This group does not represent nor show all of the local colored carriers, as some were on duty, some indisposed, some on vacation, and some "A. W. O. L." Two or three of the "old times" are very conspicuous by their absence in this picture, which causes us to wonder where were they on such an auspicious and epocal occasion. Taking his text from II Chronicles 30:6, and using as a subject "An Ancient Postal Delivery," Rev. E. L. Hartson delivered what is reputed to have been one of the ablest sermons heard in the city of Houston last Sunday at Antioch Baptist Church. the occasion having been well adverised previously. "What can he say to letter carriers?" was heard from all quarters, and interest was at fever when he announced his text. In four well defined divisions of the discourse Rev. Hartson showed that it a scorned invitation and its reception. Throughout the discourse he admonished the men to get together, unite their forces and forget differences, as did the children of Israel when called upon to meet at the house of the Lord. The occasion was the first annual thanksgiving sermon of the Colored Post Employee's Mutual Benefit Association appointed hour thoughts of people were crowding their way into the auditorium of the church in an effort to show appreciation. His Interference of Irregular Services (Luke 9:40, 50) in his intolerance of this displease. There seems to have been no question but what the man was really casting out deity, even though he did not possess the Christian character of a disciple. There seems to have been no question as to the reality of the truth which this disciple taught or the work he did. There is a fact that he lived all through the Christian centuries. Whoever witnesses truly of Christ and does His work has God's witness and does His work has God's witness and the tolerance and declared that "he that is not against us is for us." May we always show the same consideration to work even though they are not members of our particular church. H. John's Righteous Indignation 1. Jesus Face Set toward Jerusalem (v. 51-53). He knew what was before Him. He knew the awake fate that would come through the dark shadow of the cross hung across his path. He resolutely nerved Himself for the ordeal. If the federal government ever demonstrated any backbone or "guts" (pardon our commonplace vernacular), this situation at Tuskegee certainly calls it forth and the more the issue is tempered with and compromised the more acute, serious and menacing it will become. With Tuskegee Institute under a veritable reign of terror; with hooded figures and exponents of mobocracy staging a demonstration of protest alone on the grave of the lamented Booker T. But what is the real milk in the cocoanut? What is the genuine bone of contention? Is it fear of the Southern bugaboo, "social equality" or is the objection based on the ground that intelligent colored men and women, in such good paying and lucrative positions, will have a "bad effect" upon the colored youth of that state and section? Where is the likelihood of more so-called "social equality" among colored nurses waiting on and served colored inmates of the government hospital or with white nurses serving and administering unto the wants of these black warriors, maimed and disabled in democracy's mighty military confession? It does not require much brains to see that the greatest menace to Southern "white supremacy" and most insidious ally to "social equality" will be for white women to serve as nurses in this colored Is it fear of the Southern bugaboo, "social equality" or is the objection based on the ground that intelligent colored men and women, in such good paying and lucrative positions, will have a "bad effect" upon the colored youths of that state and section? Where is the likelihood of more so-called "social equality"—with colored nurses waiting on and serving colored male inmates of the government hospital or with white nurses serving and administering unto the wants of these black warriors, maimed and disabled in democracy's mighty military conflagration? It does not require much brains to see that the greatest menace to Southern "white supremacy" and most insidious ally to "social equality" will be for white women to serve as nurses in this colored hospital. Are we to infer, then, that these peanut politicians and pseudografters are perfectly willing to subject and force their women to mix, mingle, and come in direct contact with these colored ex-soldiers and stand the danger of being "contaminated" and "polluted" just for a few measly shekels? Why are these white Alabamians so anxious to man the hospital with a white personnel and so determined to see the colored American fill only the most menial positions? Why will these Dixie axisistocrats, plutocrats, democrats and "hellocrats" add additional impetus to the exodus of the Southern blacks to the North and East by such an infamous, inconsistent and informal policy and program? What do they hope to gain by such unwarranted, uncalled for and unapproved actions and anties? What are our "good white folks" going to do in the premises? What can they do? If politics makes strange bed-fellows, then money, which the apothecary termed as the "root of all evil," makes some persons cut some of the government will spend about $1,250,000 per annum at the Tuskegee Hospital for its operation and maintenance, and, since THE HOUSTON INFORMER, SATURDAY, JULY 21, 1923 d times will make a monkey eat red pepper and the sight of the green will intoxicate and drive mad many a man, the action of Alabama mob should not be so surprising after all. The mob's demonstration and attempted intimidation of both the government and the colored attaches of the hospital have not only her disgraced and humiliated the South, but such acts are the arguments available to show just cause for the government to give this institution to some other section of the country and concretely why colored people are leaving the South. There should be no delay and dillying dalying in this respect, because the House of Arkansas has not only unpleasant and unwise for a colored personnel at the pal, but jeopardize the lives of the disabled veterans for whom elemenosnyrinary institution was established. Constit The wheel of act races are bound to turn in placing the times he was seen in the mountains and uphill journey and with herdles and much in that to maintain and doctorise our young men of intelligent The United States department of interior has recently published some interesting and startling facts regarding the colored ministry of America, which reveal the fact that prepared and trained ministers are sorely and badly needed in our race. According to this statement, "the demand for colored ministers of the gospel in the United States is 1,500 a year" according to reliable and authentic statistics. During 1922, the statement continues, "less than 100 colored men graduated from any kind of training school in the country for preachers and of this number less than 10 were college graduates. The average training of the other 90 for the colored ministry was about one and one-half years of grade school work." With fully 50,000 colored churches of all denominations in the United States and with millions of communicants and constituents, whose average intelligence far surpasses and exceeds that of the average minister, this shortage of ministerial timber should cause our race to think seriously along this line. The church is the greatest force extant for the alleviation of human woes and ills and for rendering and maintaining the social safe family and secure, but no people can make real religious progress with unprepared and untrained spiritual leaders; for no man can teach or impart that which he does not know and he can not know unless he is taught, and, going still further, he can not be taught because he bounds the institutions specializing in this particular form of education of education and training. There is no other calling or profession among our people where a man knows such little and yet occupies such a high place as in the pulpit; where ministers are preaching and expounding the gospel to men and women in all walks of life. Before a man can become a physician and attend to the wants and lills of the physical man he must complete a prescribed course in an accredited medical college and then pass an examination before the medical board of the state in which he desires to practice. This also applies to dentistry, pharmacy, law and practically all other vocations of life. No person can teach in public schools, colleges nor universities until he has completed a prescribed course, secured a certificate and otherwise qualified as a teacher. Yet we permit any and all sorts of men to fill our pulpits and try to supply our spiritual needs without the least semblance of preparation and training. We must have the highest earthly calling and the office of the preacher is not only to teach men how to live better lives in the terrestrial realm, but to so indoctrinate and teach them that they will also live eternally in the celestial abode. The minister is God's prophet, who stands between the Creator and the creature and inspires, informs and improves mankind with his messages and department; standing as the watchman on the terrestrial realm, marking at the sight of danger, while serving as the connecting link between God and man. His (the minister's) office is both high and holy and his preconceived idea that all the preacher has to do is to open his mouth and the Lord will fill it, is both fallacious, erroneous, misleading and tantamount to saying that God is ignorant, dense, unlettered, and inseparable from infections in a slip-shody, happy-guilty and unintelligent manner. We must emphasize the necessity and importance of our religious leaders being not only divinely called and consecrated men, but prepared and well-trained men as well; for the times in which we live demand intelligent as well as religious men to occupy our If our churches would stop calling to the pastorate so many lazily good-for-nothing, ignorant and unprepared (and often uncalled) men and place some value and premium upon both spiritual qualification and spiritual intellectual attainments, a new day would soon dawn in our churches. No failure nor misfit can successfully fill the pulpit of any church; yet so many of our ministers, after failing in everything else that they tried to do, take up the ministry as the last resort, their chief stock consisting of a pair of healthy lungs and healthier heart, and they are not able to perform the same work. Then, too, so many of our prepared and educated ministers, as soon as they get a good charge, receive a fair salary and are called "doctor" by the members and public, stop studying and simply rehash their sermons, giving their members the same sermon with painful regularity, occasionally taking a little time to at least read the sermon, and the discourse, if they do employ the same text and subject matter. This criticism does not only apply to our ministers exclusively, for most of the colored professionals reach the period too soon and early in their careers where they conclude that they do not need to study any more, apparently satisfied with their meagre accompaniments, but they do not have attained the acme of perfection and that "ne plus ultra" is inscribed on the apex of their achievements and attainments. More of our capable young men should enter the ministry, but they should be certain of the call and then prepare themselves for their life's career; while our congregations should insist upon and accept the appropriate ministry, but an educated and intelligent ministry as well. --- Ethiopia's Place In the World's History Our last article dealt with the glory of Tyre; its unmatchable purple dye, of Tyre, into the hands of Alexander the first part of the Curse of Noah. We saw in the fall of Tyre, into the hands of Alexander the first part of the Curse of Noah. Today we consider Carthage, another city of Tyre, and Negroes and destined to equal in size of arms the greatest empire of antiquity, carthage. Location. Carthage was located on the north coast of Africa, situated in about half a mile of the coast, 295 east, the modern Tunisia, on a peninsula extending into a small bay of the Mediterranean Sea. Recent studies of Carthage know how to plan a city in a commandable manner, the street regiment crossing each other at right angles, apart, spiritful to the guays. Virgil, with others, makes much of the story that Dido, the queen whom the founder of Carthage. The number of inhabitants in 149 B.C. just before the third Punic war, is unknown. The connected history of Carthage begins with the fifth century, a period of wars between Carthaginians and Carthaginians. The subjugation of Southern Italy began in 121 B.C. by conquering nations into collision. Then came the first Punic war, in 119 B.C., against Carthaginians in a great naval battle, the Carthaginians in 121 B.C. were conquered in 241 B.C. Bald Everywhere Tobacco or Alcohol HEALTH TALKS The brain, that wonderful mechanism that controls the workings of the body, is the most concentrated of water. The liver, the important digestive organ that manufactures nutrients, is the most complex complete digestion of our foods, containing 75 percent of water. The saliva, the mucous that changes many of our foods into a form easily digested, in almost all water, which are the framework upon which the other tissues are superimposed, and whose strength is one and one hundred times that of the composed of 40 percent water. This will demonstrate beyond any doubt the concentrated water in the human system. Water increases the muscular movements of the intestines and thus avoids the risk of diarrhea. It is found to be so after years of experience and scientific research, it is sufficient amount of water to avoid disease. Rather, a physiological investigator, such as Dr. Robert Hather, a physiological investigator, all its sugar and fat, and also one-half of its protein food and still live; but it is not sufficient amount of diet. We are continually living water from our bodies through the lungs, kidneys, and bowels. Thus it is essential to make up for this continual amount of water. Water is taken into the system through our food, such as milk, juice, and butlery largely by pure, unglazed glasses of water. We have often heard the statement that water should not be taken with milk, because it contains a juice in the stomach. This statement has been found to be false and without much recent establishment, the fact that water taken with the meals still flows a flow of gastric juice. The time to drink water then, in with the meals, is three to four times every day. FOOT NOTES TO AFRICAN HISTORY (By The Hamill League.) .... In inevitable Africa. Jones would not say the word that means "they are gone," nor answered creatively. "Nothing of that sort on these islands." "Then what are they hoping to keep?" Oh, ransom, I guess, regulated the kids. "I don't believe the ransom custom ever got to this archchapetage," and his friends, "and his syllized eyes" did not. "Why, that's their staple diet." But that knew it that was not so. They captured the only two survivors of the schocker, wrecked on the South Side of Chicago, for a purpose which they dared not admit even to each other. They contained in a small hot, closely guarded by warriors with spikes. They had been grazed and had in their thirty had to have recourse to the thin, oil fluid constantly. They were blown on that food. Each had put on pounds of weight in that short time. Outside the city, they were visitors from other villages. Among them was a copper-colored chief, and an opal hat on the palm of a braun and an opal hat on the "That's the follow up to, if you want to walk to Walton. "How the gang hops to him. Know when he reminds us of, Bordirbios, that third child of Bordirbios, that third child of Walton. The elementary education at Harvard. Remember old Bordirbios, Waltner? Remember old Bordirbios, Waltner? Remember old squirrel whisky and he gave a wardsance for us on the restaurant table! He was a kid, old Bordirbios, they played them, biology and biology." But that's not Bordirbios, answered Walter. "Bordirbios never went home. He got a job with a life insurance firm as a salesman. "I win it wham!" sighed his friend. "Oh, my God, look, look!" made its appearance over one that had been kindled, and a succession of native women was coming up from the river. They were giving them into it. And around the fire a fantastic war-dance was in evidence. Round and round went the line of wards, welding their spears and uttering shrieks. More and more, given the tumbon, bounced in the jungle, bounced out their dull instrument, to boll nurl whipped Jones to Walton. "I always knew that." "So did L." The most fierce cannibal of the South Sea. Oh, if only we knew some way of appealing to that manschief's heart! There must be an end. Look! The dance is ended. The dance certainly was ended, and a couple of native women were pushed into the chair, into which the plump chef depicted himself, his war club in his hand and his opera hat tipped over his head. He made a sign and instantly two warriors danced into the hat, insulted Jones and Walters, and dragged them out of the room. The chef raised his club meditatively. "Bong walla walla," he remarked, "a completeation at the pot, and the salt." "Say, we're-know kind of soup." babbled Jones hopefully. "My friend had hardened of the classes hat me—the Doc and was petious." The chief smiled, a meditative smile, he answered, and belling takes all the bad qualities out of them. And he raised the club on high. "I am bortoloch," he uttered. "I, it is Bortoloch! Say, don't you know me, old man! Don't you remember the舞衣 in the dance end." The chief let the club fail. "Jones of Harvard!" he yelled. "And Walters!" "You won't eat us now, chief?" "Eat you? Why. I guess not! If I realized you were Harvard men, you would not take to this little unpleasantness, for which I offer a thousand apologies. You must be my guests instead. I'm going to pick out the tenderest, fittest man in the room, for tonight's banquet instead."
