Nashville, Tenn.—Tennessee continues to make fine progress toward better race relations and improved conditions for its colored population, according to the reports of J. D. Burton, and R. E. Clay, white and colored secretaries of the State interracial Commission. Bristol has recently opened Mercy Hospital, a modern, well-equipped institution for colored people, and in charge of a colored personnel. The interracial committee was behind the project and Mr. Clay was especially active in promoting it. The Knoxville committee is working for better housing and health conditions. The city attorney has drafted a bill which makes it unlawful to rent out unsanitary houses. In Chattanooga another park has been secured for colored children and three colored play ground supervisors have been employed. Howard High School was aided in securing a library, and a movement is well under way for a colored orphanage, for which the city and county have voted a substantial amount. In Memphis the Chamber of Commerce has a committee on race relations and many of the clubs are co-operating. A conference was held with the chief of police relative to the treatment of colored prisoners, and the street car management was asked to put a ban on discounty toward colored passengers. Decided improvement is reported in both regards. The Memphis committee is now planning a campaign for a colored orphanage. Excellent work is reported from Jackson, where the committee is well organized. Definite results have been achieved, also, in seventeen rural counties. More than a score of good school buildings have been erected. Three significant meetings of the state committee were recently held, in Chattanooga, Nashville and Memphis. All were well attended and messages of good will and co-operation were delivered by representative leaders of both races. Among the distinguished speakers were P. L. Harned, state commissioner of education; J. B. Brown, state rural school inspector; Judge John H. DeWitt, Jr., state commissioner of education; Judge P. Last week's Informer carried a news item concerning the judicial ticket of Cook County, of which Chicago is the principal part, having a colored citizen for one of the elective positions as judge for the superior court of that county. This distinguished colored citizen is the Honorable Edward H Morris, one of the most eminent lawyers of the country and national grand master of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows of America. Not only is Mr. Morris conceded to be possessed of judicial calibre and temperament, but he is one of the Windy City's most substantial citizens and his elevation to the bench would be a deserving tribute to a worthy citizen and able barrister. This is the first time in Chicago's history that a colored man has been nominated for a position on the judicial ticket of any party and political wivescapes see in Morris' nomination a clever political stroke by the republicans of Chicago and Cook County. It will be borne in mind that colored voters in Chicago are becoming more independent in their votes (somewhat like their racial brothers in New York City, where colored electors vote for measures rather than men and principles rather than parties) and as a result the publican candidate for mayor went down in inglorious defeat in the spring mayoralty election before his democratic opponent. The so-called "black belt" of the Windy City, in the spring election, forsook the "grand old party" (called "greedy old pirate" by some) and supported Mayor Dever in preference to Candidate Lueder, Chicago postmaster. In according to the request of the colored delegation of leading citizens and political leaders for a colored man on the judicial ticket, the republican slate makers of Cook County, apparently, had not forgotten the defection of the colored brother from the G. O. P. during last city election. But aside from its political significance and ramifications, the fact remains that the color of the skin should play no part in the selection and elevation of men to positions of trust, authority and power. The only determining factors should be character, ability and peculiar fitness for the office. Other things should not enter in—not in a democratic republic such as ours—for they are incessant and of relatively no importance; at least, they should be. If there is one failing and weak point in our present elective system, it is the act and practice of men voting their popular prejudices instead of their sober judgment. As a usual thing, the man who can arouse more prejudice and fan the fires of hatred and animosity more, stands the best chance of being freed and elected to some office that he is inherently and fundamentally unfit and disqualified he occupy. Such officers and officials as these have brought shame and disrepute upon the offices they hold and are largely responsible for the present reign of lawlessness and disrespect for constituted authority, supervised by moral cowardice, so prevalent in this country. We should aspire for public offices just like other races and in due season, if we faint not, we shall arrive and when we arrive, verily we are going to remain. Some of our people have been taught that it is both crime, treason, sedition, espionage and grand larceny, as well as first degree murder, for a colored man to announce himself as a candidate for some elective position; and, when some colored brother becomes THE HOUSTON INFORMER, SATURDAY, OCT. 28, 1923 bold enough to aspire for such an office, his own people take cold renounce his candidacy, denounce the candidate and refuse to go to the polls on election day and cast a ballot for said aspirant. Of course, this does not obtain in Chicago and Cook County where colored citizens have long since discovered the potency of the ballot and never refuse to employ it where they have every reason to believe that it will mean much to their group and the social fabric. The Informer would like to see Mr. Morris becomes Judge Morris, and, if the citizens of Chicago and Cook County will not vote their popular prejudices, but support and vote for the candidates on their merits and fitness, this colored candidate will stand an excellent chance of being returned winner on election day. The black man gets a recognition and consideration from the "powers that be" in Chicago, because the dark-skinned brother, a political factor that must be reckoned with; which should cause colored citizens, even in the South, to labor for the acquisition and retention of their suffrage rights—for the voteless man is voiceless—and the voiceless man is helpless and the helpless man is at the mercy of his oppressors—between Scylla and Charybdis. Here's honoring Mister Morris becomes Judge Morris! Selah! WHAT SMALL THINGS CAN ACCOMPLISH Did you notice that large amount of space the colored business and professional men of the Houston Colored Commercial Club employed in last week's Informer? Well, if you did not, then there is something radically wrong with you, or your eyesight is faulty; for it is the first time in the history of the race in Houston, if not in Texas, that such a gigantic business program has even been attempted, to say nothing of being put over as the Negro Trade Week was placed before the public in the present campaign. But what made its peculiar impression upon us was the manner in which this advertising program was engineered and operated on such a co-operative plan that the cost to each employer of space was virtually nominal. With a small outlay of cash, the several advertisers who boosted this Negro Trade Week showed the power of co-operation and coordination of forces and demonstrated what can be accomplished if we all put our small mites together and work to one given end. When their bills were submitted to them by the business agent of the organization for space in The Informer and other advertising matter the club had printed for boosting this special week, some of the advertisers were dumbfounded and forthwith inquired how the organization could afford to do so much with such a small charge for space, etc. When it was shown them that this was only possible through the co-operation and support of the business and professional men sponsoring the trade week, they readily saw the advantages and benefits of concerted action and team-work. If we would only learn the lesson of co-operation and group action in our every-day relations and business intercourse with each other, we would soon reach new heights in the commercial and business realm and prove to the world that we can really "cut it." In this day of fierce, keen and bitter competition, successful races and men have ceased the individualistic efforts and have long since adopted the policy and program of co-operation and concerted action; with the results that we have big companies and corporations that make it miserable for the small business man. In all lines of human endeavor men are forming combines and uniting their forces and subordinating their individual wills and opinions for the best interests of the whole and their progress and accumulators, in numerous instances, are staggering and stumped. The members of the Houston Colored Commercial Club, who joined forces and contributed of their means to boost and make successful one of first Negro Trade Week, have shown the way and the shadow of a reasonable doubt or conjecture what small things can accomplish. It is not a matter of how much but how well, that counts; for the race is not always to the swift nor the battle to the strong, but to him that holdout out (endureth) to the end. No man nor race should despise the day of small or little things, for there must be a beginning. The mighty oak springs from the little acorn and the mustard plant grows from a tiny seed. The fable of the old man with 7 sons, who took 7 sticks and gave them a practical demonstration of concerted action versus individualistic effort, is worthy of our consideration; for it teaches a great lesson and one that we need to learn and put into execution both in our every-day and commercial life. One race man expressed it very wisely last Saturday, when he exclaimed, "O, what a power we could be, if we would only learn and practice the lesson of co-operation and teamwork, as evidenced in the campaign for sponsoring and promoting this Negro Trade Week!" The colored business and professional men of Houston have made a nice start in the right direction, but if they stop with this effort all their energies and contributions will go for naught and they will have fed pearls to swine. EDUCATIONAL PROGRESS IN TEXAS The various institutions of learning throughout the country, and especially those for colored youths in the South, report large enrolments and many of them are crowded to capacity with students eager for knowledge and striving to prepare themselves for a life's work of service and benefaction. In Texas our schools and colleges are already crowded, in the main, and the several heads of the Lone Star institutions of learning are practically unanimous in their opinion that this bids fair to be the greatest year in the schools' history. Let us make a few comparisons with a view of showing the progress and advancement our race has made in Texas in educational circles. Dr. M. W. Dogan, president of Wiley College, Marshall, Texas, states that when he came to Wiley 27 years ago, out of an enrollment of 386, 350 of that number were classified in the grammar department. The enrollment at this school for the 1923-24 session is around the 500 mark at present and less than 50 of these are in the gram- mar department, and this department is only maintained now to serve as a clinic for those who are preparing themselves to take up the normal and college preparatory courses. At Bishop College, Prof. C. H. Maxson, president, also at Marshall, a similar situation obtains; for 20 years ago fully 75 per cent of all the students were in the grammar grades, but today this college maintains no grammar department and its enrollment is the best in the history of the school at this time of the year. The same condition exists at virtually all of our Texas institutions of higher learning and this augurs much for the future of our race along educational lines. And yet there are any number of children who should and could be in school drinking at the fountain of knowledge, who are growing up in dense ignorance and wasting their lives on the desert air, as it were. Ignorance is the greatest ally crime has and to be ignorant in this day and time is a sin and crime unto high heaven. Statistics disclose the fact that very few criminals are educated people, but a distinction must be drawn here between educated people and book-laden people. To merely become well versed in the languages, be a genius in mathematics and the sciences, employ flawless English and to be able to write a lengthy treatise on important and unimportant subjects, are not true indications of education; but that man or woman is best educated who renders the best service to humanity. Knowledge acquired is good, but knowledge applied is better. People are not so much concerned in what one knows as in what one does for the good of all. We once read of a man roaming the streets of an American city who could speak seven different languages fluently, yet he was begging bread and had no place to lay his head. Education prepares and enables a man (generically speaking) to adjust himself to any and all situations, and, if no place is made for him, he makes his place—makes his own sunshine and then stands in it. There is not another Southern state that can boast of greater educational progress than Texas, both in the public schools and private institutions of learning; and the fact that so many of her bronze sons and daughters are taking advantage of these wonderful opportunities, speaks well for our race and refutes the argument advanced by our enemies, that colored people are satisfied with their present, ignorant status and illiteracy. It also demonstrates the fact that our race has reached or is reaching the place in its racial career where we are beginning to practice more and more the doctrine of self-help; for he that would rise must himself first make the effort. PERISCOPE (Bill Wyliam Pickens for A. N. P.) "ONE-HUNDRED-PERCENTIMENT" IN THE NORTH. In the North, East and West, Mr. Colored Man, they are not coming after you (yes) with tread and feathers or whip and rope. They are coming before you and come and get away with it—after your job, after your child's seat in the unsegregated school, after your half equal accommodations in public places after your elective or appointment of a teacher. The status lowered in these ways, then the tar and feathers, the rope and the convenient limb will be not only probable but inevitable. It is a only degraded people that can be so treated, and the people that can be so treated and instinctively be deprived. O, they will not think this all out. Some of them, most of them, have not got that much power of thought. Some few of them will even think and protest honestly that they do not intend any such thing. But this is the natural and instinctive procession of acts and events on the road to utter oppression. These things lead in one direction. The one oppression, if "got away with," becomes the reason and the inspiration for the next, each step in oppression makes the next step necessary. Even those members of the oppressing group, who may be opposed to the first step, will become advocated of the second, because the first will have changed both the conditions and their psychology in the matter. Some of them who were opposed to school segregation at all at first will be in favor of high school and college segregation after the gram-mar schools are all fully segregated. The whites who are at present opposed to Jim Crow cars will be in favor of it or tolerant to the idea, after every other public privilege has Jim Crow. This “one hundred per cent” nuisance and Ku Klux menace is working designed at the outside of Oklahoma, Texas, and others of its strong holds. It must have a period of “mining and sapping” in the more civilized parts of the country. After this work is thoroughly done—and it won't be long, if it is not vigorously opposed and checked—the next step will be open defiance to the right of "those who are 'alien' to the invisible power." Here in an Indiana city, this bastard breed of "Americanism" is raising sand because a German painter, who is now an American citizen, perhaps, has won the contract to paint a public building. They say: "Of course the war is over, but—," and then they proceed to show that it is not over. If they would starve the Tenton descendant, they would starve the descendants of Africa. As it is, the Germans whom the brown boys shot at in 1918, and happened to miss, can come over now and have much more freedom anywhere in Indiana than those Brown boys can have. Do not fool yourself, Mr. Colored Man: Ku-Kinhin has you at the very hot line of its scheme of things. Ask them to take "white supremacy" off their list, and always "YES, WE HAVE NO PITCHERS!" The utter collapse of the pitching ace of the New York Giants, Artie Nehf, in the sixth game of the recent world's series, and his inability to locate the plate in that fatal and fateful eighth inning, caused Manager John McGraw of the Giants to paraphrase the late song hit, "Yes, We Have No Pitchers!" For once the dopesters spun out the right dope on the outcome of the series; for lack of pitching caused the downfall and defeat of the McGraw clan, while Miller Huggins' Yankees had plenty of good pitchers and big bats. But there is a serious and philosophical side to the Giants' fall, Nehf's failure at the wrong moment and the Yankees' rise and victory. It is the law of fate, yes of nature, that the hero of yesterday becomes the goat of tomorrow. Nehf had only allowed two hits up to the eighth frame, when suddenly he blew up and could not locate the plate. With victory almost in his grasp, he faltered and having faltered, failed and left the mound with tears in his eyes. No man nor team can hope to hold the championship in any line of sport forever, and the Giants were no exception to the general rule. Neh's collapse should serve as a warning; as men should be extremely careful, for when they almost be standed, they are in imminent danger of falling. Finally, brethren, the game is not to the hurrier that can throw the most buffling curves in the early rounds of the content, neither is the race to the swift nor battle to the strong, but to a man that can go the full route and hold out to the end. YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULT TOPIC—The Strategic Position of Palestine. 1. Israel's Geographical Position (Josh. 1:1-4, cf. Ezek. 5:6). Israel, God's chosen and most favored nation, the nation to whom He came nearest and gave most in order that it might pass on His goodness to the other nations of the world, was given a most strategic position in the earth. "Palestine was adapted as no other country for God's great purpose of preparing a pure religion and sending it to all the world. To this end a single nation was selected, trained and placed in the center of the world, so that when the time came to publish the true religion all lands could be reached. Palestine was central and isolated, yet accessible, for when the time came for the apostles to go from Palestine by the Mediterranean sea to the lands round about it, and from there to other lands, their way was open." Their Leader (Josh. 1:1). Joshua was Moses' assistant. He led the relationship to victory over the Amalekites soon after their escape from Egypt. He was with Moses in the Mounting the law was given. All jealousies are now taken from nations, and with good will to each other they are moving to Jerusalem, the world's capital. They are going there to be taught of God the right way to walk. The go to be structured out of His holy Word. There is but one way to peace in the world, that is back to God through His holy Scriptures. (3) Peace in the earth (v. 4). When Israel shall be in her God-appointed place with Jesus Christ as king, then war will be over. The implements of war will then be destroyed. (4) Friendly communication (18:19-23-25). As soon as wickedness is taken from men's hearts they will establish means of friendly communication. Good Tidinga.
