TRADE WEEK'S SUCCESS.
Leroy Byrd of the Byrd Sign Company, the only one of the large placements in the trade was that fostering and supporting the trade week. G. W. DeWait of the Lincoln Theatre boosted the week with big streamer, slides and 6 coupon with R. T. Andrew put on a special reduction on a line of well-known goods, with others employed various roles. We visited this occasion.
The manner in which the business co-operated in putting over the trade program is a healthy and organized co-operative in direct possibilities and potentialities; if we will only unite our teams and direct up and support any movement or undertaking that means for the race's advancement, bettlement and solidarity.
Let's have more Negro Trade Weeks and are long, having caught the spirit of the trade week and our week and our week and our business and profession all men will enjoy and share a greater
LOVELY LETTER CASE.
The head of this department is indeed grateful to Edgar B. McMullen of the Poe College, St. Louis, Mo, for a beautiful tan leather case recently presented us, as compliment of the executive institution.
This is one of the race's most substantial and enterprising business concerns and the departmental heads are very alert and always on the job with new and novel methods for the development and expansion of their business.

Kalamazoo, Mich.—Knocked down eight, times in less than six minutes of fighting, Homer Smith, the slugger from this village of the far west, proved a mere stepping stone for Harry Wills, the bronze panther of New Orleans, last Thursday night, in his campaign to force Jack Dempsey into the ring with him, when he curled up before the most terrific body beating ever administered a heavyweight fighter.
Smith was knocked out in exactly five minutes and six seconds of fighting, in which the white fighter was so completely overwhelmed that he never had a chance to lay a glove on Wills. In super condition and with the Smith went down. Then came the acceleration of the former "narrator" and round.
characteristics of that famous "prince" of the forest from whom he devised his nackname, Wills proved more than a panther in action here Thursday night. He leaped from his corner with the ferocity of a tiger as the bell brought the battles to the middle of the ring. Unleashing all of the thunder in him for more than a year, and poor Homer Smith, realizing the vital force against him was pitted, simply went into his shell and stayed there.
In Wonderful Form.
Weighting 211 pounds, his real fighting weight, and with his muscles rippling under the bronze skin, Wills rocked the ring at the Queenensburg Stadium here, eager and restless. Said conference did not settle much. But when the first blow delivered in the fight, his mind was suddenly made. Wills had claimed, before the fight, that there was no man living who had lasted the distance of ten rounds with the Argentinian.
Wills' Body Blows.
Wills was in wonderful form and he turned a flipped of blows that folded up in the very first round. Without landing a blow to the head, Wills rocked his opponent with short, sceptical eyes and lasted 45 seconds of flipping him to the canvas for the count of nine, without having hit on the jaw. It was these murderous, terrific actions that the body doubled up him.
Those body blows were enough.
Each time that Wills drove in, a raw red bruise showed the spot where these powerful shocks had landed. Five times in the first round Wills, whose speed proved a revelation to those who watched him in action, complete the attack and landed those decisive, strength-asphalt punches. And each time he landed.
In Wonderful Form.

five minutes and six seconds fighter was so completely overance to lay a glove on Wills. Smith went down. Then came the sec and round.
The Knockout Punch.
The first blow of the bout, launted by Wills, had been a terrific right under the heart, and Smith (hearing the birds), decided that his tough bite was up against the that it could cause. He still groggy from the effects of the body punishment he had received in the first round and with nothing to carry him forth but the idea that Wills might let up, Smith advanced, once more, to the slaughter. For Wills, Smith as soon as he could catch him, clouched him a couple of blows and down he went. Rising at the count of nine, with arms hanging limply to his elbow, he attempted to rush into a clutch, but then again short arm-jetting, he again went down. Once more he rose, tottering, and Wills, with delicateness, intent shot the haymaker, spelling K. O. Smith simply collapsed for the last time. As he was helped to his corner he was cared for the birds, that bore the imprint of Wills gloves.
10,000 Acclaim Willa Winner
As Wills leaped from the ring, accompanied by his manager, Paddy Millen, the plunders of the 10,000 fans, ran through the crowd, and this battle of giants, joined in giving Wills a nightly acclaim. As they arose and throughout the dun could be heard the calls of "Bring on Jack". There was not a fan in the place but who knew that Wills was the logical choice for the replay of Inzo in action against Smith. They had seen Smith step the gate, who, with Batting Sirt and others, was an onlooker at the ringside, shook their heads as they witnessed Wills.

Inter-Racial Committees Very Active All Over State—Leading Citizens of Both Races Enlisted—Results Achieved Include Hospital, Library, Parks, Schools, Correction of Grievances—What Has Become of Texas Commission on Inter-Racial Co-operation?
Nashville, Tenn.—Tennessee continues to make fine progress toward better race relations and improved conditions for its colored population, according to the reports of J. D. Burton, and R. E. Clay, white and colored secretaries of the State interracial Commission.
Bristol has recently opened Mercy Hospital, a modern, well-equipped institution for colored people, and in charge of a colored personnel. The interracial committee was behind the project and Mr. Clay was especially active in promoting it.
The Knoxville committee is working for better housing and health conditions. The city attorney has drafted a bill which makes it unlawful to rent out unsanitary houses.
In Chattanooga another park has been secured for colored children and three colored play ground supervisors have been employed. Howard High School was aided in securing a library, and a movement is well under way for a colored orphanage, for which the city and county have voted a substantial amount.
In Memphis the Chamber of Commerce has a committee on race relations and many of the clubs are co-operating. A conference was held with the chief of police relative to the treatment of colored prisoners, and the street car management was asked to put a ban on discounty toward colored passengers.
Decided improvement is reported in both regards. The Memphis committee is now planning a campaign for a colored orphanage.
Excellent work is reported from Jackson, where the committee is well organized. Definite results have been achieved, also, in seventeen rural counties. More than a score of good school buildings have been erected.
Three significant meetings of the state committee were recently held, in Chattanooga, Nashville and Memphis. All were well attended and messages of good will and co-operation were delivered by representative leaders of both races. Among the distinguished speakers were P. L. Harned, state commissioner of education; J. B. Brown, state rural school inspector; Judge John H. DeWitt, Jr., state commissioner of education; Judge P. Paline and City Health Officer Durrett of Memphis; Bernard Cochran, president of the News-Scrimitary company, ex-Mayor Thompson of Chattanooga, and, for the colored group, J. C. Napier, veteran banker and business man; Dr. T. O. Fuller of Memphis; C. C. Allister of Howard High School; President W. J. Hale of the State, J. I. Normal; Dr. L. S. Patton; Rev. J. C. judge for the superior court of that county.
This distinguished colored citizen is the Honorable Edward H.
Morris, one of the most eminent lawyers of the country and na-|
‘tional grand master of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows of|
America.
‘Not only is Mr. Morris conceded to be possessed of judicial cali
‘bre and temperament, but he is one of the Windy City's most sub-|
stantial citizens and his elevation to the bench would be a deserv-|
ing tribute to a worthy citizen and able barrister.
‘This is the first time in Chicago's history that a colored man has
‘been nominated for a postion on the judicial ticket of any party’
‘and political wiseacres see in Morris’ nomination a clever political
stroke by the republicans of Chicago and Cook County.
It will be borne in mind that colored voters in Chicago are be-
coming more independent in their votes (somewhat like their
racial brothers in New York City, where colored electors vote for
‘measures rather than men and prineiples rather than parties) and
‘as a result the republican candidate for mayor went down in in-
lorions defeat in the spring mayoralty election before his demo-
cratic opponent.
‘The so-called “black belt” of the Windy City, in the spring elec-
ton, forsook the “grand old party” (called “greedy old pirate”
bby some) and supported Mayor Dever in preference to Candidate
Laeder, Chicago postmaster.
In acceding to the request of the colored delegation of leading
<itizens and political leaders for a colored man on the judicial
ticket, the republican slate makers of Cook County, apparently,
hhad not forgotten the defection of the colored brother from the
G0. P. during last city election.
‘Bat aside from its political significance and ramifications, the
fact remains that the color of the skin should play no part in the
selection and elevation of men to positions of trust, authority and
power.
‘The only determining factors should be character, ability and pe-
culiar fitness for the office. Other things should not enter in—
not in a democratic republic such as ours—for they are inconse-
‘qvential and of relatively no importance; at least, they should
be
If there is one failing and weak point in our present elective aye:
tem, it is the act and practice of men voting their popular preju-
dices instead of their sober judgment,
‘As a usual thing, the man who can arouse more prejudice and
fan the fires of hatred and animosity more, stands the best chance
‘of being elevated and elected to some office that he is inherently
‘and fundamentally unfit and disqualified to occupy.
‘Such officers and officials as these have brought shame and
Gisrepate upon the offices they hold and are largely responsible
for the present reign of lawlessness and disrespect for conatitut-
‘ed authority, superinduced by moral cowardice, so prevalent in
‘this country.
‘We should aspire for public offices just like other races and in
éue season, if we faint not, we shall arrive and when we arrive,
‘verily we are going to remain.
‘Some of au people have been taught that itis both erime,trea-
® aon, sedition, espionage and grand larceny, an well as first degere
for a colored man to announce himself ax & candidate for

thelr merits and fitness, this colored candidate will stand an ex
cellent chance of being returned winner on election day.
The black man gels a deal of recognition and consideration from
the “powers that be” in Chicago, beause the dark-skinned broth
ris polteal factor that must be reckoned with; which shoul
cause colored etizens, even in the South, to labor for the soqu
‘ition and retention of their suffrage rights for the voteless man

Here's hoping Mister Morris becomes Judge Morris! Selah!
Did you notice that large amount of space the colored busi-
ness and professional men of the Houston Colored Commercial
‘Club employed in last week's Informer? a
Well, if you did not, then there is something radically wrong
with you, or your eyesight is faulty ; for it is the first time in the
history of the race in Houston, if not in Texas, that such a gigantic
‘business program has even been attempted, te say nothing of being
ut over as the Negro Trade Week was placed before the public in
the present campaign.
But what made its peculiar impression upon us was the manner
in which this advertising program was engineered and operated
‘on such a co-operative plan that the cost to each employer of space
was virtually nominal.
With a small outlay of cash, the several advertisers who boosted
this Negro Trade Week showed the power of co-operation and co-
ordination of forces and demonstrated what ean be accomplished
if we will all put our small mites together and work to.one given
end,
When their bills were submitted to them by the business agent
of the organization for space in The Informer and other advertis-
ing matter the club had printed for boosting this special week,
‘some of the advertisers were dumbfounded and forthwith inquired
how the organization could afford to do so much with such a small
charge for space, ete.
‘When it was shown them that this was only possible through
the co-operation and support of the business atid professinoal men
‘sponsoring the trade week, they readily saw the advantages and
‘benefits of concerted action and team-work.
If we would only learn the lesson of co-operation and group ac-
tion in our every-day relations and business intercourse with each
other, we would soon reach new heights in the emmercial and busi-
ness realm and prove to the world that we can feally “ut it.”
In this day of fierce, keen and bitter competition, successful
races and men have ceased the individualistic efforts and have long
since adopted the policy and program of co-operation and concerted
faction ; with the results that we have big companies and corpora-
tions that make it miserable for the small business man.
In all lines of human endeavor men are forming combines and
uniting their forces and“Subordinating their fpdividual wills and
opinions for the best interests of the whole and their progress and
‘accumulatons, in numerous instances, are staggering and stupend-
ous,
‘The members of the Houston Colored Commercial Club, who
joined forees and contributed of their means to boost and make
‘successful our first Negro Trade Week, have shown the way and
proven beyond the shadow of a reasonable doubt or conjecture
‘what small things ean accomplish.
It is not a matter of how much but how well, that counts; for
the race is not always to the swift nor the battle to the strong, but
to him that holdeth out (endureth) to the end.
| Noman nor race should despise the day of small or little things,
for there must be a beginning. ‘The mighty oak springs from the
little acorn and the mustard plant grows from a tiny seed.
‘The fable of the old man with 7 sons, who took 7 sticks and
gave them a practical demonstration of concerted action versus
individualistic effort, is worthy of our consideration; for it teaches
‘4 great lesson and one that we need to learn and put into execu-
tion both in our every-day and commercial life.
‘One race man expressed it very wisely last Saturday, when he
‘exclaimed, “O, what a power we could be, if we would only learn
and practice the lesson of co-operation and teamwork, as evidenced
in the campaign for sponsoring and promoting this’ Negro Trade
Week!”
‘The colored business and professional men of Houston have
‘made a nice start in the right direction, but if they stop with this
effort all their energies and contributions will go for naught and
‘they will have fed pearls to swine.
‘The various institutions of learning throughout the country, and
especially those for colored youths in the South, report large en-
rollments and many of them are crowded to capacity with stu-
dents eager for knowledge and striving to prepare themselves for
1 life's work of service and benefaction.
In Texas our schools and colleges are already crowded, in the
‘main, and the several heads of the Lone Star institutions of learn-
{ng are practically unanimnous in their opinion that this bids fair
to be the greatest year in the schools’ history.
Let us make:a few comparisons with a view of showing the
progress and advancement our race has made in Texas in educa-
tional circles.
Dr. M. W, Dogan, president of Wiley College, Marshall, Texas,
states that when he came to Wiley 27 years ago, out of an enroll-
ment of $86, 350 of that number were classified in the grammar
department. =
‘The enrollment at this school for the 1923-24 session is around
thie 600 mark at present and less tharr 50 of thebe’Are’in the gram-
maar depestment, and this department is cnly smisteined now te
serve as a clinic for those who are preparing themselves to take
‘up the normal and college preparatory courses.
‘At Bishop College, Prof. C. H. Maxson, president, aloo at Mar
shall a similar situation obtains; for 20 years ago fully 75 par cent
of all the students were in the grammar grades, but today this
college maintains no grammar department and its enrollment is
the best in the history of the school at this time of the year.
‘The same condition exists at virtually all of our Texas institu
Lions of higher learning and this augurs much for the future of
our race along educational lines.
‘And yet there are any number of chiliren who should and coul
be in school drinking at the fountain of knowledge, who are grow-
ing up in dense ignorance and wasting their lives on the desert
si, a it were.
Ignorance is the greatest ally crime has and to be ignorant in
this day and time isa sin and crime unto high heaven.
Statistics disclose the fact that very few criminals are educat
ed people, but a distinction must be drawn here between educated
people and book-learned people.
‘To merely become well versed in the languages, be » genius in
mathematics and the sciences, employ flawless English and to be
fable to write a lengthy treatise on important and unimportant
subjects, are not true indications of education; but that man of
‘woman is best edueated who renders the best service to human-
ity.
‘Knowledge acquired is good, but knowledge applied is better.
People are not so much concerned in what one knows asin what
one does for the good of all.
We once read of a man roaming the streets of an American city,
‘who could speak seven different languages fluently, yet he was
begting bread and had no place to lay his head.
Education prepares and enables a man (generically speaking) tc
adjust himself to any and all situations, and, if no place is made
for him, he makes his place,—makes his own sunshine and then
stands init.
| ‘There is not another Southern state that can boast of greater
‘educational progress than Texas, both in the public schools and
private institutions of learning; and the fact that so many of her
bronze sons and daughters are taking advantage of these wonder.
fal opportunities, speaks well for our race and refutes the argu
ment advanced by our enemies, that colored people are satisfied
‘with their present, ignorant status and illiteracy.
It also demonstrates the fact that our race has reached or is
reaching the place in its racial career where we are beginning te
practice more and more the doctrine of self-help; for he tha
‘would rise must himeclf first make the effort.

The main thing an advertiser wants to do is to tell you plainly how and why his goods are worthy of your money. He wants you to believe, because many things you see advertised are the things you buy and use in your regular daily life. By reading the advertisements, you can learn the names and read descriptions of the things that are best and most unfamiliar.
But advertising teaches more than that. All advertisers try to make their advertisements themselves valuable to you.
A good many people have learned a whole lot absof, good advice. They have learned about healthy, ways to live comfortably, how to keep the home and ground looking well—they have learned all these things and many other things just by reading advertisements.
Read the advertisements right along, and you will learn a lot that will be helpful and valuable to you as you go through life.
