Aher, formerly a practicing physician of Austin and native of Marshall, who succeeded the late C. M. White as head of the American Medical Association, made several days, making his first official visit to the state and city since his promotion and elevation to the supreme commander of Austin this great organization. Dr. E. W. D. Aher, son of the lamented David Aher, Sr. who now sleeps beneath the pinyen trees of Harrison County, has entered upon his new work with both vim and vision, both which are needed to assist him in his work. He is going to make good as the directing head of this "giant of Negro fraternals," of Denver, Colo. The names Daven, Kes, Rober T., nummous, Kelsa, Roberts and others waiting to be their children should be a major force for good. if their parents had only done to their children of those who have left. Let's pay more attention to our children. We贮存 so much of this child reside in and encompass—whose holdover duty to society—the social family and a little child shall lead them! This statement is fraught with much significance and is capable of more parents, look well and wish to your children (and those of you who have grown up with courage, for as long as there is hope), for they are the future parents. (Special).—Editors of leading daily papers in six of the Southern states have united in a signed statement asking for mutual helpfulness and co-operation between the white and colored races in the South, for adequate educational advantages for colored people, for equality before the law, and for the abatement of racial discrimination. The Southern Virginia editors and has since been signed personally by more than fifty other editors of leading dailys in North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana. Practically every man to whom it was presented readily attached his name. It is believed that the Southern press has a high degree of the Southern press as a whole. The statement follows: Methodists Hold Two Annual Sessions Here; Many Seek High Honor Wesley Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Dowling and Webster, and Boynton Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church, Dallas and Paige, are hooks this week to the annual conferences of their respective denominations; and Pastors G. Rev. J. R. Burrell, R.D., serves on Sunday night, November 6 at 8 o'clock. Rev. E. L. Harrison, popular pastor of Anchorage, has been selected to preach at the church. The pastor always has a burning message and is generally heard by large audiences. There will be special music, by Bethel's choir and celebrated male all. It was declared by Prof. Nathan B. Young for the past twenty-two years, during which time he consistently stood out for higher education against unofficial. Recently, as was told in the Crisis for September, he was forced out. His successor was W. H. A. Howard, a man who he himself had been a teacher two years ago, and whom the colored people believed in his removal. Studenta Strike. BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH AWARDED PRIZES TO LEADING CLUB WORKERS; ENTERED NEW CHURCH HOME SUNDAY the congregation of Bother Baptist Church, of which the Reverend J. R. Burdett is pastor, entered the church and crusade streets, Fourth ward, Sunday. The president has seen to it that he is not the second one, a fuss. The president is not the second one, national leaders have been declaring for Coolidge for president. Starting in with the powerful backlash will be a noise like a real pillow of governmental influence, a keen interest in political vision and a generous national group of influential friends, the president can be a guilty base. This can hardly be guessed. CHARLES BANKS, MOUND BAYOU BUSINESS LEADER, PASSES AWAY (By Associated Negro Press.) (By Associated Negro Press.) Clarksdale, Miss. — A maging illness which had troubled him for three years, proved fatal to Charles Bank, financial wizard, merchant, and town builder. Mr. Banks succumbed at the J. T. Wilson hospital in Memphis, Tenn. His funeral was conducted here this week from the Friendship A. M. E. Church. His death takes from the ranks of Negro leaders in Mississippi and the South one of the leading thinkers of the day. On all hands, by both races, he was regarded as a genius. Party leaders and all lines of strife were forgotten by the mourners of every class who flocked to his funeral. Mr. Banks was born in this city in 1873. His burial here gives him the unique distinction of being born in Mississippi and was born and where he had labored most. As a boy, his predilection for business was shown in the establishment of a merchant in 1889. This cancerc business was continued until 1903 when Mr. Banks founded Mound Bayou, in the town of the same name founded by Isaiah Montgomery. In politics, Mr. Banks was a republican. In 1904 and 1908 he was a republican of the republican national convention, and in 1912 he was a delegate at large. Judging from the evidence, charges, accusations and wholesale allegations made by the klan factions in the Atlanta, Georgia hearing during the week, things are not so calm, serene and harmonious in the "invisible empire." "Brother Bill" charges that "Brother Hiram" and his accomplices have virtually bankrupted the exchequer of the organization by acquiring and wielding the Chikara class last spring and an additional huge sum for supporting and practically underwriting a certain "organ" of the "imperial order." Charges of graft, malfeasance, criminal extravagance, blackmail, violation of the "fraternity"s constitution and other high warring factions and it is beginning to appear that the half has not been told. All of which reminds of the adage, "When thieves fall out, honest men get their just dues." We hate to see the leaders of this great "100 per cent American" organization fighting and contending sensuously, and the greatest foe to any organization or movement is internal rather than external. No order with such high and noble objects and as the klan professes to espouse (and on which Imperial Wizard Evans had fought) to resist the attack at the Dallas fair, last week), should permit a few hungry money-grabbers and designing politicians and grafters to create dissension and strife in the ranks, making it necessary to resort to the courts (tribunals the klan does not believe in when trying some person who has incurred its wrath and displeasure) for redress Also the workers of iniquity who do dirty deeds in the day can be off; they are taught and taught soon be cut off; lo, just a little while more, weave with us no more. THAT INIQUITOUS FEE SYSTEM Much has been said and written about and against the inquisitive and infamous fee system of Texas, yet, with all its evils, ills and injustices, it is necessary to abolish the system and consign it to the scrap-pile with other age- and obsolete methods of dealing with crimes and criminals. We read an interesting and illuminating article in one of our daily newspapers, lately, regarding the operations and activities of certain fee-grabbing officers in this county; who make promiscuous raids, with colored people as their chief victims, and then get the justice of the peace out of his bed and compel these often more humiliated and defenseless persons to plead guilty to various and sundry crimes. This system of colored people pleading "gulity" to charges is no uncommon practice in the South, whose section is blighted and dwarfed by the high-handed, unscrupulous and unprincipled actions and deeds of so many of its peace and constabulary officers, who else out a bare existence or grow wealthy and fat, fleecing and massacre, innocent and defenseless colored citizens out of their meagre means on finable charges and accusations. Next to lynch-law, the iniquitous fey system has done more to stimulate the exodus of the colored brother to the North and East and cause dissatisfaction among those remaining here than any other form of Southern injustice and inequality; for it is nothing more than the legalized lynchery. It matters not whether the accused is guilty of some crime or not, if the arresting officer or officers say that the black man or woman (as the case may be, as they raid and arrest nearly as many women of the race as they do men) is guilty of some crime, he or she is guilty and all the witnesses under high heaven can not inflame that equity vertict to the contrary. One justice of the peace said that a colored man during the last week of his tenure of office, "Boy, we know you are not guilty, but we need the money!" The idea seems to prevail in these circles that some persons must serve as goats or sources of revenue for these hungry officers, and the black people can be led like sheep to the shaughter, circumstances, and virtually robbed of their little and meagre finances. We once heard a presiding officer of a court in a Texas city say: "John, you had a right to do so and so, but I fine you $ and cost." Catch that "cost"? Well, that little "cost" is what makes a small fine assume mammoth proportions. To illustrate: We know a colored man who was arrested on a trivial offense and after fighting his case, was fine "$1 and cost"; but when he got through paying the "cost," it had passed him. Practically every county officer got his out of that "cost," and, because this is their chief and main method of earning a salary, they often "frame" persons, arrest them at night, try them at night and get their out of the "cost" between suns. If the fee system were abolished, officers would not arrest persons with some money for fat, juicy steaks," as we heard one fee-grabbing officer for the court, where the court held that the colored brother, though not guilty by the evidence, would pay "$1 and cost." Talk about your graft and crookedness, but the fee system is a prolific source of such procedure, entirely out of keeping with the law. It outrages justice, makes mokey mockery of honesty and decency, prostitutes and debases supposed minions and guardians of the ages, renders and maintains our Southern species of civilization a huge joke and is fundamentally at variance with and in relation to the basic principles of criminal law and court procedure. Like mob-law, if unrestrained and licensed to run its course without let or hindrance, the iniquitous and infernal fee system will ultimately engulf the South in a mighty maelstrom and wreak havoc. Let's abish the damnable and diabolical system in Texas, or it will eventually prove a cancer and consume our very vital! WELCOME. METHODISTS! Houston is host this week to two branches of Methodists: The African Methodists holding their annual conference at Wesley Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Rev. G. B. Young pastor, while the Methodists are staging their yearly meet at Boynton Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church, Rev. S. W. Johnson pastor. Since both churches will elect delegates to their respective quadrennial conferences, which hold forth during 1924, an unusually large number of delegates are in attendance. The delegates are joined into the ring as delegates to their general conferences of their churches; but, as usual, many are called but few will be chosen. But these messengers and religious workers are not merely meeting to push their candidacy or the candidacy of some other aspirant for honor or office, but to advance the Master's kingdom among the sons of men and contribute their bit, through oration, to honor and reclamation of lost man through human instrumentalities. The church, as we have often stated, is the greatest living force for the uplift and humanizing of mankind; and, the man who professes a hope in Christ and calls himself a follower of the Lowly Nazarene and yet hates his fellowman of any race, tribe or kind; a liar and the truth is not in him," so declares the Holy Writ. These devotees and adherents of the Christian religion believe in the "fatherhood of God and brotherhood of man" and that God is no respecter of persons, but out of one blood make all nations that dwell upon the face of mater terra. They not only believe in Christianity and its tenets, dogmas, practices and ancient teachings, but they are also firm believers in Christianity and in employing business in God's earthly institution—the church. They do not subscribe to the idea that "you can take all this world but give me Jesus;" but rather embrace the idea that Jesus and some of the world's goods do more to place Christianity in a world of its rightful place than "all Jesus" and utter poverty and want. They assemble here (these Christian workers: ministers and laymen) to outline and execute a program of far-reaching importance, which has as its object more prepared ministers, more efficient teachers, better institutions of learning and eleemosynary schools, more churches buildings and a concert of action and solidarity of forces necessary and imperative in the church militant. For all that delegates to these two annual conferences represent for advancing the Master's cause, for racial uplift and so on, with participation they hope to accomplish while here or set in motion, we wish to thank them and extend a most cordial welcome to them to enjoy and share the hospitality of "Heavenly Houston." Christian friends, you are guests of the greatest and fastest-growing city in all the Southland—a city that Nature has smiled upon and loved. We are grateful to those whose colored population, besides being the largest of any city in the state, is thrifty, law-abiding and withal a credit to the municipality; a city famed for its multiplicity of churches and multiplicity of preschools, and its exceedingly large number of colored homes. The school's annual fair was the educational exhibit of the Bastrop Colored High School, of which Prof. L. J. Leyen is principal. The display of domestic art work compared very favorably with the same type of work shown by the white cakes. The school's special points excelled those of the other schools. Examples of the girls handwork in plains sewing, embroidery, and knitting were also specimens of their cultural art. It is truly a temptation to tease upon the dainty cakes and pies exhibited.
