(By the Associated Negro Press.)—Helena, Hamp- Hamp Martin, warden of the Arkansas penitentiary, has been adjudged in content of court and has been sentenced to death except prisoners brought to the jail by the sheriff of Lee County. These prisoners numbered six, and were the last of those implicated in the senatorial Ehline riot. They had been tried for the murder of a woman awaiting trial, delayed by legal obstacles. GEORGIA JAILS AMONG WORST IN CIVILIZED WORLD
(By the Associated Negro Press.)
Atlanta, GA. — A survey of 99 Georgia county prisons reveals the fact that inmates are more likely to report this. This report is found in a bulletin released by the state department of public safety in Georgia, it is disclosed in the report where men and women prisoners of the county are being pelled to live night and day in the compartment. Committees reporting on the conditions of women prisoners living in the same cells with men prisoners in the compartment have unnately no facilities for the segregation of prisoners, either by age, sex or race. No recreation, any kind of activity is permitted in, as 41 per cent of these jails, and in 46 per cent of all are compiled in 46 per cent.

Washington, D. C.—President Coolidge wrote on the occasion of the recent dedication of the bibd dore Roosevelt in New York. The letter has the honored patriotism, and the president had the course of it, to have it understood that when he spoke of of law, justice and a square deal, he meant that he be applied, without regard to "race, color or creed in so many words. The country has not been accured years to definitely know just whether the fine of presidents were inclusive or exclusive of a tentional population.
In his silent, quiet way, the president is going a chief executive, dropping a little suggestion here having rather interesting effect on the program racial salvation in the good old U. S. New York, Nov. 2—The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, 89 Fifth Avenue, Sunday published a report from the Georgia Bankers' Association, showing that the jobs to the state of Georgia through the northward migration of her colored citizens was greater than had been inflicted by General Shannon on the march to the sea in the civil war.
For the year, the state is threatened with 46,674 vacant farm houses, 55,526ilope and a labor shortage of 70,545person, according to the report. According to the Advancement Association, the migration is giving the southern border to its own hand, that ill treating Negro citizens does not pay.

To the local Lodges and Households of Ruth of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, Jurisdiction of Texas, Greetings:
The Odd Fellows are going to build this Temple. They are going to build it in Houston. They are going to build it soon. The plans and specifications have been approved by the Executive Committee, and bids will be submitted within the next thirty days. It is going to be such a building as will arouse the pride and excite the admiration of every Negro in the State. It is going to be the best building owned and occupied by colored people in the state at this time.
As an investment, it is going to pay a handsome profit in dollars and cents, but it is in sentiment that it is going to pay most. What good has the Washington monument done? It has made every youth in America have more love and reverence for his country. This temple, when built, will be

CONSTRUCTING ODD FELLOWS' TEMPLE.
Since it now appears certain that Houston will be the home of the state temple of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows and Household of Ruth of the Texas jurisdiction, and, since the architect, a race man, will complete his drawings of plans and specifications next week and submit same to the grand master and building committee of the order. The Informer deems it wise to make its position known regarding the erection and construction of this imposing structure.
If the Odd Fellows were not in a shape to finance this job or the greater portion of it, perhaps our position might not be tenable; the architect, a race man, will provide special shape this paper believes that the grand master of the order and the building committee should award the job of building this edifice to some reliable and competent colored construction company—such big concerns as Windham Brothers of Birmingham, Alabama, or the Service Construction Company of Atlanta, Georgia, and others.
These and other colored construction concerns have demonstrated their ability, not only to build mammoth buildings of steel, concrete and brick, but to finance them as well.
Most of these building companies are located in a section of the country where colored artisans, tradesmen and mechanics virtually all work. These colored construction companies in other sections of the South, particularly, are concrete and tangible evidences and proofs of the race's ability to deliver the goods along this line.
Understand that The Informer is not contending for the job to be awarded to some colored construction company just because of the race's ability to deliver the goods along this line, their ability to do the job according to plans and specifications.
The Odd Fellows building, as proposed, will be one of the most gigantic, imposing and inspiring structures owned by the race in this country, and it will be a still greater inspiration and more important document if colored artisans can be found and employed on this job.
There has been some talk or rumor to the effect that colored artisans might find it difficult or embarrassing to work on the proposed building in this city; but there is not one scintilla of truth in that statement, which is about as base and malicious as another false and groundless rumor or falsehood placed in circularity around the building the artisans paid off all the outstanding obligations on the local property.
Among the big buildings erected by colored artisans in the South are the Pythian Temple at New Orleans, Pythian bath house at Hot Springs, Odd Fellows temple at Atlanta, Court of Calantha temple at Shreveport, Paul Quinn College dormitory at Waco, St. Joseph's College, the College of Arts Temple at Dallas, Colored High School at Atlanta, and any number of commercial, fraternal and college buildings in various parts of the South.
It should be the policy of all colored fraternities and organizations—built, supported and maintained by our people—to give our artisans the opportunity to participate in programs and wherever practicable, award them these real jobs.
We must admit that Texas possesses few, if any, artisans capable of building and constructing such an edifice as the Odd Fellows contemplate erecting here, but there are plenty of these men and women trademakers to be found in Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Virginia.
It will tremendously advance the cause of the Odd Fellows fraternity in particular and our race in general, if colored men are used to build the state temple in Houston, and every care should be exercised and every means exerted in a real and genuine effort to locate a race construction company that can give bond, that is reputable, reliable and competent and whose artisans will put up a "brown skin" job.
There are more reasons than one why this contract should be awarded to a colored building concern and The Informer hopes that such will be done; for to do otherwise, all things being equal or merely a suggestion of the very purpose for which such orders and fraternities are organized and the principles on which they are built.
This is no editorial plea for any particular colored construction company, as The Informer's interest is more racial than individual; but is merely a suggestion that the grand lodge officers and building committee of the order do what others colored lodges and organizations have done in awarding contracts for the creations of such buildings to race artisans and builders.
THE HOUSTON INFORMER, SATURDAY, NOV. 10, 1923
ARMISTICE DAY AND US.
Do you remember the morn of November 11, 1918, when the news of the Huns' capitulation and cessation of martial conflict on the shot-ridden and sanguinary battlefields of France was flashed throughout the civilized world?
Can your mind recall how colored and white mothers and fathers, brothers, sisters and whatnots, paraded the streets together, even in "Heavenly Houston" and other Southern communities, celebrating the greatest and most far-reaching martial victory in annals of warfare?
Didn't your heart beat with inexpressible pride and did not a peculiar fire of patriotism and uncontrollable enthusiasm or joy find lodgment in your breast, as color line and social caste were forgotten and swept aside on that memorable day as all rejoiced over the allies' victory and the entente's debacle?
Do you remember the first Armistice Day thereafter, the one of 1919, when many battle-scarred veterans of the world war, of both races, took part in the first official celebration of the day that meant so much to the cause of "worldwide democracy, human liberty and universal freedom"?
Can your mind go back to November 11, 1920, when the colored citizenry and former black soldiers in a victorious cause for all mankind, were not even invited nor asked to participate in the celebration and observance of this epocal and historic day?
How many times since then have the colored soldiers and citizens been extended an invitation to take part in the various Armistice Day celebrations?
Not only have our black heroes been slighted in the observance of a historic day that their sacrifices and sufferings helped to make possible, but they have even been denied membership in the organization of world war veterans, known as the American Legion.
But why exclude colored citizens from participating in the celebration and observance of Armistice Day, since they played no role in the war? There is something fundamentally wrong with our American sense of appreciation and gratitude; for we are too prone to forget today the favors and kindnesses done us yesterday.
Colored Americans, especially in the South, are not considered even good enough to vote and enjoy the rights and guarantees of the state and federal constitutions; but just as soon as Mars holds the moon, the sun and the moon, we are scribed, disfranchised, segregated, jim-crowed and otherwise maltreated "boys" become "men" overnight and are immediately inducted into the armed service of their country—a country which, though pressing them into service during war, denies them the manliness and constitutional rights both during peace and war.
Armistice Day should mean as much to us as to any other American citizen; for the vast majority of us were born here, while a large percentage of others came here.
That the white people should exclude and fail or refuse to allow our race to participate in these annual celebrations, is a disgrace to the nation, since it represents the reputed sense of fairness and justice of the American republic.
The Informer has been reliably informed that colored citizens are invited to attend the Armistice Day program at the City Museum. The Informer will speak at the Dannenbaum will be the principal speaker; that colored singers will appear on the program and that a number of leading colored people will occupy seats on the platform; that special seats have been made for them; that the group have made it known The Informer that this is THE PEOLE'S celebration, and not A PEOPLE'S affair.
This being true, The Informer would like to see a large number of our people present at the Auditorium Saturday night; for the purpose of making them as much as to us as any other group in our polygot population.
HIGH-PRICED COLORED ADDITIONS
Far be it from The Informer to knock any such undertaking not impugn or question the motive of these real white realty firms who are selling these lots to our people on the installment plan; but their real estate companies are not so willing to winked and fooled so much by slick-tongued salesmen and glittering promises of certain improvements which never materialize in these colored additions, let these realty firms do like Embry and Investment Company, owners of Pine Crest, who added most of these improvements before attempting to sell the lots to our people.
To merely assume the position that there are plenty colored people in Houston who can afford to pay a fabulous price for an unimproved lot, halfway between this city and Calgary, in the land and improper attitude for any realty firm or land salesman to take.
It looks like somebody is merely trying to flick and fleece some of our people out of their hard-earned cash, and The Informer opposes their program and hereby warns our people to think several years ahead of their suburban lot, that at its best, is only worth around $750 to $900.
SMITH'S GREATEST WEEKLY NEWSPAPER
SUNDAY IS UNION HOSPITAL DAY.
Sunday, November 11 (Aristice Day) has been designated as Union Hospital Day in the local churches of the city, and all churches and their auxiliaries are urgently requested to make a healthy contribution to this much-needed elemenary institution.
The Union Hospital is not a privately owned institution, but belongs to all the colored people of Houston and Harris County, and it is our indispensable and holdy duty to contribute of our means for liquidating the obligations incurred in purchasing the property.
Already this hospital has been an angel of mercy to any number of our people in this community, and at the same time it affords our surgeons an opportunity for real hospital experience and work that could not be incurred in any other similar institution in the city.
Recently the hospital board was able to induce Professor L. M. Terrell, well-known Tennessean educator and social worker, to assume charge as superintendent and financial agent, and he hopes to realize sufficient funds in the present drive to meet some pressing debts on the building.
This is one cause that our posters and churches should not and must not overlook, for it is our institution; it looks after the physical needs of our people; its doors are open to our doctors, and it is our duty to make possible its maintenance.
If every colored man, woman and child in Houston would give 10c or if the amount contributed by the race would average 10c per person, fully $4,000 to $5,000 would be realized in this present drive and the race would hardly feel or miss the amount.
Big propositions are put over by the combined efforts, small though they may be, of the many or group—concerted action and co-ordination of forces.
Pastors, heads of church auxiliaries, hymen and citizens, this is your opportunity to practice the doctrine of sacrifice with this joy you may think of it, our race is on trial in this spiritual battle.
Let's do our duty Sunday, November 11, for our own Union Hospital and make Union Hospital Day a real success.

The department of vocational agriculture is making great strides throughout the State of Texas at the hands of teachers, who have handled by a lack of trained teachers along agricultural lines, according to Ferdinand P. Dickerson of P. W. University. "In many instances, he says, 'there are teachers who do not do the right jobs, but they do not reclaim the great opportunity that awaits them for service to humanity and self-adventure.' In this work are employed twelve teachers who are tendering salary, and can always have the satisfaction that they are tendering "it is desirable that vocational teachers have some college training in agricultural lines. But due to the scarcity of good material in the past these years have been waived to some extent." Anyone who is interested in pursuing vocational training to place a vocational department in their school, may accept the success of H. G. Dickerson, Prairie View, Texas.
UNUSUAL OCCUPATIONS FOR COLORED
(Lincoln Service).
There are seven colored police-women in the United States. Twenty-four colored women in the military mail-carriers and 19 are "newborns." You will be surprised to know that the 116 colored postmasters under Purdue University, that 40 of these are colored women. Preferring personal service as a nurse, 80 women have found employment as hawkers, hairdressers and manicurists. While only 11 white females are enrolled in the study, 22 colored women are thus employed throughout the United States. Many should not like the free women, but they applied to her last boot, she may engraged in the work of the country, to make her next pair. The 35,442 colored persons who work in the public schools in the United States, 23,185 are women, and 94 of these women are the age of 65 years and over.

LOCAL PYTHIANS HEARD
KINCHEON LAST SUNDAY
Several of the chancellors and deputy chancellors of the local lodge of the university meet Sunday afternoon. The two propositions submitted were unanimous. First, as executives of the local lodge, they were in heavy accord with the university's color and plied themselves to institute every feasible effort to perfect the same in Houston. Second, for some reasons, each C. C. was made chairman of the committee of his local lodge, and each C. C. was made chairman of the many members to associate with him, from his lodge, on the committee to their report in the next meeting.
The executive session adjourned and immediately assembled in a general meeting, the executive committee Brawley introduced the grand vip event, which included brief discussions briefly the past present and future greatness of the order. His remarks were punctuated with humor, vignettes and a meet at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 11, at the auditorium of the Pyrian temple. HOUSES FOR RENT OR SALE

Atlanta, Ga. — A new feature of the effort of Southern white business men in the city has been taken in the announcement that several large industrial concerns of Southern states are preparing to erect a new industrial complex colored laborers. The announcement is found in the Manufacturer's Record of the City of Atlanta. The first cities of the South to try the new plan is said to be Suffolk, Va., where the plan is being made near future, under the supervision of the Industrial Housing Corporation. This building scheme is admittedly in the best interest of the men behind it declaring that one of the things the Negro likes best in the city is the great array of good houses.

Keen Says Texas Is Hot
"Talk about heat! Pitcher Vic Keen of the Chicago Nationals. "Those nine or ten weeks I was in the Texas Jaguars last summer, with Pitcher Taill Falls it averaged better than a hundred.
"I pitched a game one after noon when it was 120 out there on the field, and it went 16 innings. Between rounds I stuck my feet, almost all in a bucket of water to keep the spikes from blistering my feet."
GEORGE SISLER MAY
NEVER PLAY AGAIN
Will Quit If Winter's Rest Fails to Restore Sight.
Despite optimistic statements to the contrary which recently found their youth, before he really had pushed George Slipper will never play ball again.
He is down right in the primes of youth, before he really had pushed his top form, a bitter stroke for Slipper. And not only Slipper, the St. Louis Brown, the American league, the Nets, the Slipper, through his remarkable playing, had become the game's idol. He was Tyrus' Cobbys successor, probably the most successful Tyrus, owing to his winning personality, and he was considered more valuable than Babe Ruth. The Slipper is as much of a mystery as when winter he was unable to respond to the call for spring training. The manager as manager of the St. Louis Brown recently, it has been taken for granted that Slipper will be the manager of the club in the future. Perhaps the former, but the latter is not assured, although it has been eight months since he was strenched

All adverts make their advertisements themselves value
The main thing an advertiser wants to do is to tell you plainly just how and why his goods are worthy of your attention, because many things you see advertised, the things you buy and use in your regular daily life. By reading the advertisements, you can learn the names and read descriptions of the things that are best and most attractive.
But advertising teachers more than that. All advertisers try to make their advertisements themselves valuable to you.
A good many people have learned a whole lot about, good things to buy, healthy, ways to live comfortably, how to keep the house and grounds looking well—they've learned all these things and many other things just by reading advertisements.
A great deal that will be helpful and valuable to you as you go through life.

For Raw Sore Throa
At the first sign of a raw, no-earr throat rub on a little MUSTEROLLE with your tongue. It goes right to the spot with a gentle tingle, loosens congestion, draws out swollen and pus, and paints the MUSTEROLLE in a clam, white paintment made with oil of musterolle. It has all the same properties of the old musterolled mustard plaster without the blister. Nothing like MUSTEROLLE for croupy children. Keep it handy for instant use. What Life Consists Of
"A man's life consisteth not in the abundance of things which he possesseth." In these words Jesus strikes out against belief that life consists in things. For nothing are we under deeper obligation to Christianity than for this, that we are not to believe that the first man started heartward, there have been two conflicting ideals of life: one teaches that life's value is what we get from life; the other teaches that chief end of man is to develop his highest powers, to live in fear of that which is benthic and in its rewareness. Christ is not聂-her, K. C. Albertson, D. D.
