The manager, who was partially covered by insurance, Mr. McCoy was in it. The Houston business is surpassing their most angstive expectations; while the Houston office showed a marked increase in the number of that they will see to it, that none of their Texas and Southern customers in the least. HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1924 HOWARD APPROPRIATION GETS SUPPORT OF UPPER HOUSE AFTER BEING SLASHED BY DIXIE SOLONS Washington, D. C.—Carrying a total appropriation of $665,000 for Howard University, an increase of $707,500 over the amount as passed by the House of Representatives, the interior department appropriation bill was reported favorably to the Senate Saturday, February 9th, from the U. S. senate committee on appropriations. The additions made in the bill for Howard University cover the $207,500 for maintenance and equipment stricken from the bill in the house on a point of order and also $500,000 for additions to the medical school in the medical school on the medical school. Senator Phipps of Colorado, a member of the subcommittee which handled the bill and also chairman of the subcommittee which handles the district appropriation bill, was largely instrumental in bringing about the inclusion in the bill of the $500,000 for the medical school. ITEM IS RESTORED. He also supported the restoration to the bill of the $207,500 for the maintenance and equipment of the university, which had been stricken out of the bill in the house on a point of raised by Representative Byrnes of South Carolina. The president of the university, Dr. J. Stanley Durkee, and Dr. Emmett J. Scott, secretary-treasurer, declared that the work of the University would be seriously handicapped if these appropriations are not allowed. Howard University is one of the two universities for colored students in the medical school. The great need of more and better trained colored practitioners was pointed out to the committee as an argument for the $500,000 to be used for additions to the medical school. Of this amount $370,000 is to be used for additional buildings and $138,000 for equipment. The Senate added $3,000 to the items for Freedom for subordinates. The total recommended for Freedom's Hospital is $174,700. HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1924 MEETING OBJECTIONS WITH SERVICE In a previous issue of The Informer we discussed how so many of our people are enriching foreigners and members of other races, all the while permitting any number of the business and professional members of our own race to suffer and make it best they can under try conditions and vexing ordeals. Now we wish to say a word or two to the business and professional men of our race, particularly those of Houston. The business or professional man that places color above and before service, is building his business on a faulty foundation and when he begins to lose his trade, patients or clients, he should blame one but himself. We heard a number of race men in a discussion a few nights ago, and apropos their talk about a foreigner opening a barbershop for our people in the downtown district, one of the men remarked that there was not a single colored place of business on Milam Street nor Prairie Avenue, where a colored patron of those race men was located; one of the men remarked station; while the foreigners, operating places of business on these same streets, maintain free telephone places for everybody. This might appear as a small matter, but it is merely a part of the service that our people have a right to expect from the business men of this city and particularly those of their own racial household. As long as men of other races, catering to our people, can afford to maintain free telephone service, our business men must do the same thing or suffer the consequences. A race man enters a colored house to make a purchase for his wife and the article that she wants or told him to get, is not carried in stock by said concern. Unless the proprietor grants this article to the race man, he must purchase it at most 5c to ring his spouse and ascertain what he must purchase at this same colored business institution. Other causes arise that often make it imperative for a patron to ring his or her home or place of employment from many of these colored business houses, and, many of these men and women are unwilling to pay the 5c toll every time they wish to make such a what happens? Many of them will go to the places operated by the foreigners and use their telephone without money and without price, often resulting in a new customer for the foreigner and another customer gone from the race man! Aside from meeting competition in quality of goods, prices, equipment, etc., our business men must learn that the man will get and retain the business who delivers the goods from all angles. It is perfectly right and proper to patronize our own people in business, trades and professions, but these people must expect this trade and patronage on the grounds of fitness, efficiency, service and not because of their racial connection or fraternal relation. It is necessary to beautify your premises (and every business man should do this without being forced to do so) to compare favorably with and compete with the other fellow, then beautify them! If you must maintain free telephone service to hold our patrons and gain new ones, by all means install the telephone! If you must have quick delivery to offset the inroads the other firm has made, you must suggest that you inaugurate and maintain such delivery service! Service counts, men; for when people enter your place to make a purchase, they are not willing, as a general proposition, to pay for excuses and alibis and to be penalized for your shortcomings, inability and unwillingness to meet competition and render the business that they can often get at the next door or right around the corner. Another thing, no man should engage in business nor enter the professions unless he is well prepared and thoroughly versed in the business he enters, or the profession he follows. Too many of our people embark in a certain line of business because So-and-so is engaged in the same business and seems to be doing business in the same way than taking in consideration the fitness and peculiar training for the business they essay to promote and operate. We fear that as long as we are satisfied with running and conducting our businesses on the individual scale rather than collectively, we are going to find it both difficult and embarrassing to work with some of these seemingly insuperable and insurmountable barriers. But there is hardly a colored man in business in Houston, especially in the downtown area, who is not able to meet these usual injuries raised to and criticisms hurled at our business men, and, sirs, it is your job to remove the causes for such complaints, criticisms and objections. The analysis and stripped of all rheoretical verbiage, service counts! The Houston Colored Commercial Club offers the colored business and professional men of Houston a splendid chance and golden opportunity for a discussion and solution of the problems that are common to all engaged in these lines among us; for only through enlightenment, education, co-operation and organization can we achieve other races in the business and professional spheres of activity. The business and professional men of other races find it necessary and imperative to organize their forces and protect and THE HOUSTON INFORMER, SATURDAY, FEB. 16, 1924 safeguard their interests; so why should ours conclude that they can get business, retain it, meet competition and expand their partaking in the business and rigidly by the other successful races of our day and time? As in other things and lines, we are too prone to imitate the other races in their superficials and not given enough to emulating them. You may make excuses, apologize, offer alibis and cite numerous reasons why we do not get our share of the business from our own people, but the fault is in ourselves, sirs, and not in the rank and file of our people, neither in the stars, that we are underlings and not getting our just share of the race's business and patronage. The TWENTY-NINE HUNDRED TO TWENTY-NINE One of our leading colored ministers told us the other day that there are around 2900 young white men in the various colleges of the state, preparing themselves for the ministry and field of religious endeavor. Among our group, particularly in Texas, we doubt if there are 29 young colored men pursuing a theological course in anybody's college; yet our pulpits are being filled with and occupied by enlightened students, a hostel, and "pawing-in-the-value spark busters," who know as much about grammar as a hog does about hip pockets or as much about theology and the Holy Writ as an ane does about constructing a radio outfit. We have often discussed the need of educated, conserved and divinely called young men for the ministry among our people, for we are woefully and sadly deficient and lacking in this respect. If the white people of Texas can see the need and necessity, with all their years of freedom, training, education and superior advantages, of sending their young men to colleges and seminaries for the greatest and holy work, how much more necessary and imperative is it that we place a premium upon intelligence in the pulpit and encourage our young men to go to school and prepare themselves for this work? The old idea that all the preacher had to do is open his mouth and the Lord will fill it, a fallacy; unless the advocates of theology for the greatest and holy work He will fill their mouths with candle bugs, mosquitoes, etc. God has no place in His great scope and plan of redemption for any ignorant and blind person, and the statement that Christ called only the simple and unlearned men of Galilee as His immei- sure and erroneous and not substantiated by either sacred or secular history. The generally accepted ministerial definition of heaven—that it is a prepared place for a prepared people—leads us to wonder how can people be prepared for an ultimate residence in this “prepared place,” and how can leaders who can properly teach and inductate (prepare) them? As we have often charged (and truthfully, too), so many of our preachers resort to the ministry after they have failed in everything else they have attempted to do; and, since the colored ministers are so much more likely to learn little about the he is supposed to preach and teach, the field is crowded with jack-legs, bootleggers, mendicants and whot-nuts, while our people are being consumed for lack of knowledge and proper interpreting of the Scriptures. No man, who he does not know, and no man can know unless he has been taught, and no man can be taught unless he to school or some capable tutor. There is an alarming dearth of prepared young ministers and the number of people who must great stress upon their theological departments, have almost removed the course from their curricula; while the majority of our young men are willing to enter any field except the ministry. Then, too, so many of the older ministers have made it so unpleasant that they are not prepared young minister that even some of these are disgusted and exasperated with the pulpit. In Texas, these older ministers (at least in one denomination) have built up a “ring” and only ministers can get good charges for their services. In the United States, the “ring leader” or his confederates, associates and manikins. We need to encourage more of our young men to concurate and dedicate their lives to the ministry, but they also must remember that he serves best who is best prepared and knows thor People are not going to church and listen at hatched-up or plagiarized sermons, nor to rehash discourses labeled with new subjects. Many of our ministers think that, after they have been called to the pastorate of some good or substantial church, they do not need to study any more, and thus they become lazy and refuse to prepare sermons for their parishioners. Some ratio: 2900 to 29. When one considers the extremely large number of colored sermons and the fact that we are turning out few, if any, able and well-prepared young men to serve these charges, it is alarming to say the least and bodies ill for our future religious welfare and Christian development and growth. We need to raise the standard in the pulpit among our race, or else we are going to roam in the wilderness for years, to come be forced to slee out our spirits耻辱 and crumbs. Y. W. C. A. NOTES.
