HOUSTON, TEXAS, SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 1924 CRIMES IN HOUSTON AND LUEKIN CONTRASTED. In Luffin, a colored youth, who was accused of slaying a white commissary manager, was only saved from the mobs' wrath by the courage, determination, stamina and backbone of Sheriff Watts of Angelina County, and when his trial was held the colored boy was found guilty and given the death penalty in nine minutes! The Informer is not qualified to either prove or disprove this colored boy's guilt, for a jury has already determined that; but, in the case of Elaine Hine, it appears that any court which can assess the extreme penalty in such a short space of time, is influenced and dominated by the mob spirit. Much credit is due Sheriff Watts, the veteran peace officer of Angelina County, for his bold and brave stand for law and order and respect for constituted authority, when he repelled the attack of the East Texas mobsters that sought to wreak its vengeance on the helpless and defenseless race youth. The credit is not due him so much because he saved the life of a colored youth, nor should a man or public servant be landed and coerced into a criminal act. It was such an unusual and extraordinary act for either an elective or appointee public official in the South, that the Informer thinks that this sheriff deserves the praise and thanks of all citizens who believe in the supremacy of the law. The Luffin trial and record-breaking conviction of this colored youth for slaying a white man in cold blood should be contrasted with an incident that transpired in this city. Several white youths stoned a colored girl to death when she was found guilty of the guilty culpits were turned loose under a nominal bond; and there has not even been a wave of protest from any source. The Lukkin youth, Booker T. Williams, is it alleged, killed the white man in an attempted hold-up; while the white youths of Houston slew the colored girl because she got off the street car "ahead of white people." In both instances we have cold-blooded murder, and any persons guilty of such acts would expiate for their crime according to the laws of the land; but neither the color of their skin nor the texture of their hair should influence the wheels of justice in meting out punishment for their crimes. Our laws are too flexible and pliant, particularly in the South, for most cases are decided by the "pull," "color" or "standing" of the accused. Apparently, all criminal laws were written specifically to condemn convict and punish colored violators, and to exonerate and acquit all white violators. Especially is this condition true where the black man's victim is white and the white man's victim is black. Such procedure is causing many of our people to lose faith in the courts of the land, where decisions are rendered on the grounds of racial connection and political expediency. In the South, the white youth, yet we deplore and regret the underlying causes for his boy's delinquency; how ever, he is only one of the many in our racial group who is a liability to his race and society and for which race and society are to blame. As we said in a previous editorial against the infliction of the death penalty upon criminals, punishment per se does not decrease crime nor deter criminals, but our work should begin in the hope that the criminals will—and then our criminal colony, will decrease quite perceptibly. Falling down on the job in the home, school and church, and then trying to make up the deficit through the instrumentality of the courts will not get as very far in reducing criminality and making it safer. If it is wrong for a colored boy to kill a white man, and if he must pay the extreme penalty for his crime, by what course of reasoning or criminal procedure can we hope to exonerate, acquit or assess a mild punishment upon white youths who mob and stone a girl to death on one of our leading suburban residential streets? The performance will be followed by If our courts are to remain as temples of justice both in name, deed and truth; if they are to be real pillars of safety and protection; if they are to continue as bulwarks against despotic and mobocratic demonstrations and attacks; if this country is to be protected and protected more than the doctrine of right makes might, rather than might makes right—then justice must be color-blind, judges must render decisions according to the law and juries must arrive at verdicts from the facts adduced and introduced in the presentation of the cases. Finally, what our section needs is more sheerls like Sheriff Willem of Angela County, strict enforcement of and rigid adherence to the laws without regard to race, creed or previous condition of servitude. NOTES Despite this opposition and defeat of the previous school bond issue, The Informer is firm in its opinion that the colored citizens of Houston should get some definite and concrete assurances from the school board before supporting or opposing this proposed bond issue. The activities center furnished the setting for a pretty lunch on the floor of the "Y" committees were guests of the young farm workers, and the real branch. Each committee was responsible for the decoration of their table, the idea being to create a table with real decorations. The finance committee realized real money as their main "decoration." The schools of this city are in a deplorable shape and a real disgrace to and reproach upon the community; particularly the buildings and physical surroundings of colored schools. The colored citizens need a new site for a high school and a modern school; the students need the present needs, but with such appointments and features that the future needs of the race will be taken care of amply and creditably. There is a crying need for a modern building at Gregory School in the Fourth Ward, the largest ward school in Texas in point of attendance; but about the worst structure and most disgraceful school building, not only in the local system, but in the entire state. There is Douglass School, located on McGown Avenue in Third Ward, another large ward school, which stands in dire need of a modern structure; to say nothing of Dunbar, Washington and other inadequate and dilapidated school buildings for colored chil JUST US CLUB. There seems to be a prevalent idea among our people here that the colored principals and teachers should take the lead and initiative in trying to get better buildings and facilities for colored students. This is a common practice among teachers, but of the patrons of the schools, citizens and tax payers. It may be that such course can best be pursued through some regularly organized body, which is now functioning in this community for the best interests of our people and city; but by all means we must be aware that "where we come in" on this proposed $3,000,000 school bond issue. Pred Douglas Chapter No. 23, Royal Arch Mission, will stage a musical at Wesley Chapel, Friday night, March 16. The mission promotes musical stars in the city. Mrs. H. H. A.'s BIG PROGRAM At last the colored branch of the Young Men's Christian Association has been established. The organization leased a three-story brick building at Prairie Hill and Smith Hall. It remains to be seen whether our people will subscribe to this movement and support the organization in its efforts and activism. VITAL-DODSON WEDDING BRILLIANT OCCASION On Thursday evening, February 21, the home of Mr. N.
